I agree, modern commemoratives are best bought on the secondary market when the prices for silver and gold coins are near melt. I never buy direct from the mint. Way too overpriced.

People will pay 30 bucks for a Morgan cull, but shy away from a beautiful commemorative coin, with exactly the same silver content. This makes no sense to me. I have, and will continue to buy the comm coins that I enjoy.

In Australia the 2018 $2 coloured collectors pack was popular a year after it came out. Went up tripple the issue price. But most commemoratives are just granny bait.

Great video. I have a number of the older commemoratives but just may start looking at the modern ones as well. The variety of designs on theses coins is what adds to the appeal.

I've been collecting mostly silver and a few gold commemoratives since 1986. I have every silver dollar and clad half dollar issue. Never buy them from the Mint. Always buy them on the secondary market. I have them all nicely displayed in Capital Plastics holders. I collect them for their uniqueness, not for value, not for "stacking BS". I collect them because I like most of them. Lately however, they are getting too esoteric and "woke" if you will. Now that the mint took a break in 2023, I am calling it quits.

From a stacker perspective: The 90% silver modern commes that I can get cheaper than peace/Morgan’s but slightly more than junk prices : I buy them regularly and do enjoy them. The gold commemoratives are interesting, thanks for the tip.

I disagree some commemoratives will have value but you have to wait and honestly it may be during your childrens' or grandchildrens' lifetime. I like the Gold Spouse pieces but cannot afford them right now.

I am looking at these coins .24 .900 fine vs the full 1/4oz .999fine coins and are about 65.00 cheaper.....wondering about pulling the trigger...

At some point I do think the value will go up on quite a few, which is part of why I hunt for good deals on them. I'm in my mid 20s still so I can afford to wait a few decades while stockpiles get tarnished/melted down lol. Also I love the designs of course.

Mintage of 3000 coins for USA is extremely small mintage. I'm surprised to hear that is so small...

What about the mintages of the BU/MS commems, especially the clad halves?

Ben would be good to do an update on modern commemoratives as the premiums are high getting them directly from the US Mint. And Gold Spouses are doing better than in the past but still undervalued. Usually best to get gold commemoratives on the secondary market as they usually sell a little above spot. One of the reasons for these commemoratives being undervalued (at least those of the past 20 years) is a) not all designs were done well and b) they never see use as some of the older commemoratives did as the older commem's face value was close or above their bullion value. Survival rates are high for older commems are therefore usually lolwer than for modern commems. Those modern commems that are lost are due to poor storage, actually being lost, or melted by dealers. One area of US modern commems I see a decent appreciation in the future and are within the reach of many more than the gold commems --the uncirculated clad half dollars --- IF the design is attractive. As the price is far above the metal value of the coin many decide to get the silver or gold but some of the clad half dollars have mintages that are below 15,000. Those who are smart and want their bullion get the uncirculated silver dollar as mintages in recent times have been just a little higher than the unc clad half dollars Yes the $5 gold commems and $10 gold Spouses are the best dealsas you pay a much lower percentage above spot, and should have good appreciation IF your heirs hold onto them but they aren't always within reach of buyers at all times. I do think modern commems in the past 10 years may remain slightly undervalued much as as Seated Liberty Proof coinage is and for one similar reasons - Seated Liberty proofs did not see circulation usually. However storage methods were cruder compared today but then again collectors usually sought these and strove to preserve them as best they could. Still you can get a very nice one for well under $2,000 and mintages under 1,000. Not bad at all. But I digress my point is although the gold is the best "deal" the clad half dollars are more within reach. If you shop smart AND get one you LIKE (i rarely think it is a good idea to buy a coin solely for investment) as well as with a relatively low mintage you may have or your heirs, at least, procure a decent profit from them. For example the 2018, 2019 American Legion and 2020 Uncirculated clad half dollars all had mintages below 15,000 and even the popular Apollo unc half dollar of 2019 had a mintage UNDER 50,000. Starting in 2011 mintages start to stay under 50,000 except for the 2014 Baseball Hall of Fame and with 2016 the mintages for the most part stay at or well below 20,000.
