Great video. I like the idea of the modern $5 commemoratives. But I really prefer the classics. I don’t own either at the moment. Some of the commemorative designs are not exciting to me, BUT the lower premium makes up for it.
APMex has them pretty cheap in "random" sales. They also sell a few select years individually like the 1987 "bicentennial" constitution $5 gold coin. That's listed individually. There may be other years too but these are the ones that I saw
With gold a little over $2,400/oz. now I really like the size of the $5 and $10 gold commemorative coins since many people are unable to purchase a full ounce gold coin. I’ve only purchased two $10 commemorative gold coins and would like to buy a few more but some people say to avoid this type of gold coin while others are enthusiastic about them. Quite frankly I don’t know who to believe.
It's a good idea to be cautious. The long and short is that these pieces tend to be overlooked, and overlooked tends to equal low premiums when you buy...but also low demand when you sell. That said, I've never seen a dealer pass up the opportunity to buy them. And low demand also leads to them being melted down. And that can (possibly) lead to them being more rare in the future.
