my AC experience started and ended with Black Flag. As the games became bigger and grindier I lost all interest and Black Flag offered something different from other AC games. Having said that what bothers me is that Ghost of Tsushima was tagged as "problematic" because it was a samurai game made by a western studio. even though there were all japanese characters and the games had complete japanese audio track (I doubt AC Shadows will have a japanese audio track). Articles in the washington times and other media questioned whether this was cultural appropriation. Now for assassin's creed, a game also made by a western studio is not getting the same scrutiny. So, which is it? is it ok to for western studios to make samurai games or is it not? is it cultural appropriation or is it not? It's this inconsistency and seeming lack of integrity that bothers me about the media and the mobs that react to this kind of thing.

I mean they put a TON of work into making the sites and things going on around you accurate while you fight as a DNA time traveler trying to find your alien God trinket that stops vague Mayan predicted solar flairs of doom. I miss going to a landmark and unlock the Lore and history about it that was told by Shaun in a snarky manner. I miss the cities, i miss the art that i could buy and collect in my home, i miss it all I haven't pretty much touched An ACafter the dissapointment that was Unity .

I love that that do this. In Assassins Creed Valhalla, you can walk around and see how people lived back in the day, down to farming, sewing clothing, blacksmithing, building houses and such. It's wonderful. Focuses on all the things we look over when playing a standard game.

agreed, I really liked Syndicate but the 2 character style didn't feel great. Possibly better to keep the playstyle the same for each or you can go stealth or combat on either. Then have the characters tied to different story beats. But I know a lot of people do like having different playstyles.

About the two player protag? Is it co-op or something more like Spider-Man 2?

@@SpiderMax95 it is. In Nioh you play as a white English samurai who is based off a real person. No one was mad at that game. Also in nIoh you meet Yasuke. He's called the obsidian samurai. That game is made by Japanese devs studio btw called team ninja. Hell no one said anything about Shogun the show. But Yasuke is too much for these people. Oopsy mistake. Youre right. I confused the dev diaries. They said for AC1 they used sonets and poems of the time to flesh out Richard the Lion Heart since poets are known to embelish. I got this info from Ubisoft channel. Go to playlists. Go to their AC1 playlist and checl their dev diaries. Also you can watch assassin's creed by GVMERS on RU-vid. Kinda long but they also meention some of the dev diaries.y mistake. But vivic does tell desmond almost word for word the animus knows the entire truth, hidden truth and does care what rhe victors wrote. I think it reasonable that they could argue Yasuke was samurai in this instance ​@@immortallvulture

It's a bit iffy at times, the idea of samurai being "honorable warriors" following the way of bushido was mostly a fiction concocted by later periods to whitewash the role the warrior class played in the oppression of Japan by warlords.

The fact he sticks out is the point. There’s also a Japanese woman protagonist that looks to be the traditional stealth of AC games. I wish folks like you would drop the charade, stop talking out of both sides of your mouth, and just admit you don’t want to play as a black man.

It's a safe bet that those wanting an AC game want to play as a samurai native of the land. It's also a safe bet that a Chinese martial arts expert in a Japanese AC game (dlc??) would not be criticized as woke, pandering, or agenda driven. After all, those countries are close enough and Buddhism crossed through that ocean.

There is a playable Japanese character. She's gonna be there. You can call her presence as a woman as a DEI choice (and you wouldn't be entirely wrong) but she's definitely a thing.

@@fluidthought42 The female Japanese shinobi fits the game like Kassandra did in Odyssey. A Japanese shinobi and a Greek mercenary wouldn't look out of place or jarring in their respective settings. I'm glad that Kassandra and her voice actress was in Odyssey. There was something way off the with the male character's voice acting.

I guess some strong reactions come from people's who really wanted a AC in japan but that far from what theys hoped for kinda like when you order a sandwich that look really good then you realize theys put pickles in it and you say you don't like it and the answer you get is"We made your sandwich now deal with it" kinda situation... it's bittersweet Most peoples don't understand they say stop being mad and bitching but that franchise is 17 years old lot of us were playing the first ac while those kids were still hanging out with theirs dads in a nutsacks we are invested I guess

It's not historical accuracy, it's about immersion. If people have been waiting for a Japanese AC for ages, chances are they want to play Japanese characters, not someone that sticks out like a sore thumb. It's like buying your kid a pet turtle after it's been begging for years to get a chameleon.

You wouldn't feel like a Roman legionary if you're playing some black guy. You wouldn't feel like a Mongol barbarian if you're playing some white guy. Etc, etc. Immersion matters. There was no need to rob Japanese people of their spotlight. They could've simply implemented this character as a major NPC instead.

Like if AC wanted to set a game in WWI Arabia and made one of the player characters Lawrence (of Arabia) and another player character someone indigenous to the area that seems pretty reasonable. The representation is there and you get an influential historical figure who was not indigenous to the area so that the two characters' can each offer distinct and interesting perspective on the story.

But the game having a black lead will definitely make so that they'll get some blind defense from the correct-minded people at least

@@Kyle-yn5hy yes, there is magic and Ancient Aliens, but the locations and characters have always been pretty accurate(besides the obvious world domination motivations lol). That was a selling point until Syndicate where the timeline was too modern, so they didn't want to use real people as the villains.

I've always been impressed by the lengths they go to and the people the employ to make sure the games are immersive and have some reverence for the time and culture they take place in, despite how loathsome Ubisoft is as a company. @@Samhain23 I get what you're saying, but that seems like a huge nit pick. If we are saying "historically accurate" is based 100% on what 100% happened, the only things that are accurate are the actual written accounts of the people that lived it. Even then, most likely not. No book, no movie, no biography, has ever been 100% accurate. I say historically accurate because from AC 2 to Unity, the events and people, their lives, status, and deaths, play out as they did in real life. People forget that the first like 10 games, just had the artifacts there as a thing to fight over, and for a cool scene at the end of the game. They were explained by science fiction. It wasn't until Origins that the mythology and magic became a thing. In the RPG games they went overboard with the mythological creatures and what not, but most of that is side content. The historical events happen as accurate as can be with those time being so old, with the addition of magic and hidden blade. Even then, the RPG games have a museum type thing you can explore and learn more about the locations and people and see how close the actual events are to the game. The Yusuke thing is just dumb people being dumb. They just want to be offended about whatever. I don't acknowledge it beyond the fact that he looks badass. I believe this game is going to be amazing and I'm going to learn a lot about the Shogunate and feudal Japan.

@@fluidthought42 Revalations is basically DLC in my opinion. It's Ezio's story continued. You are right about Black Flag. It's once again connected to another AC. Their main goal when making it was connecting it to AC3 while expanding on the naval combat and that's how we ended with the end product. I wouldn't have minded if they did native protagonists that work for characters connected with the original games, but they didn't for some reason. Besides, in both games the foreign characters are very period appropriate. Constantinople was a big city at the time and a lot of Europeans would be seen there, mostly traders. And during the pirating age of the Caribbean most, if not all, of the pirates were defected European military captains and crews. I'd say, it's pretty easy to wrap your head around those choices. In the case of Shadows I don't think any of those will be true. Maybe the game is so good that once it comes out people will just forget about the complaints and the inclusion of a black character will make different kind of sense in context. That's what I hope for anyway. My main point remains though. There are a lot of black and Japanese people that are against the game and the dialogue online has turned into AGAINS = racist, FOR = good. People will openly say "Well, maybe you are right, but you know, there are a lot of racists out there against the game, so if YOU are against it, then you are in the same camp as them and guilty by association" which is very disturbing to me. I feel like a lot of valid criticism for the game has been shut up like that, and only the worst of the worst are left which is rightly, easy to dismiss.
