Back in the late 70s my parents installed a wood burning, free stannding fireplace in our home. Dad took all the precautions and fire proofed the wall behind it, put up bricks and built a raised heart, Nearly every time we lite the darn thing it would burn the creasote out of the chimney that ran through our attic to the roof cap and we had to call out the firedepartment to come and put it out before it burned down the house. They finally bought some sort of cleaner that you threw on the fire while it burned to keep it from happening. I can still see it sitting there looking like Darth Vader squating in the corner of our living room.

My father did that also. They came and blocked the opening so the fire had no oxygen and it went out fairly quickly.

Anyone with a coal fire knows that chimneys catch fire about twice a year. You just don't put any more coal on and they burn themselves out then you call the sweep to come round in the morning. What a dull none story
