What's Wrong With My Clutch Cable? - Early Porsche 911

My clutch cable installation didn't go as smoothly as planned. It seems there's a mismatch between the cable and clutch arm at the transaxle.
Which lever system is best? Should I get a new cable or new arm?

Tom, almost seems like you can modify the arm to make it fit/connect properly. Let me know when you're ready to install a great condition 3.2 engine w/brand new Patrick Motorsports lightweight clutch/flywheel and starter setup. Mines for sale...ha ha ha! Keep up the great work/content!

Tom, I think you can swap the pivot arm for a straight thru cable accutation. That arm that makes the cable bend 90 dgrees is notorious for breaking the cable at the bend. Happens at the most inopportune times. I haad the bendy arm and i remember cables breaking. I now have a retrofitted arm and no more worries.

Thanks Christopher that is the real world feedback I need. I'm working out the fulcrum ratios now. Did you notice a difference in pedal pressure or clutch engagement when going to the later arm?

With all the fabrication skills you have, I would go the route of modifying the arm. Seems to be the easier, and potentially stronger solution. I’ll be interested to see what you come up with. 👍

Ha ha, that thought did cross my mind. I have a bit of time so I'd rather sell the one I have and order another. I'm thinking the 1974 arm might have more adjustment range on that end and less stress on the cable. So I'm leaning towards a replacing the clutch arm

Just hooked up the clutch on my 912e I’m just missing a 7mm 1 pitch nut 🤪

Change the cable. The spring assist interferes with SSI which you might run later.
@GarageTimeAutoResto
@GarageTimeAutoResto 3 года назад
Are you talking about the Omega spring thingy?
@WiksGarage
@WiksGarage 3 года назад
@@GarageTimeAutoResto yeah the clutch assist spring can make mounting SSI a bit more challenging. I think you have to hammer it in a little to clear. Not sure if you are running headers or SSI on your 911 engine. This is your 356 engine? missed a few episodes...
@GarageTimeAutoResto
@GarageTimeAutoResto 3 года назад
I'm considering the 70 arm versus the 74 arm. Neither use that omega, so I should be good for SSI later if needed. That engine is an extra 912 engine I had. It's temporary while I build a big 6

I don't know about these cars, but could you change the arm out for the other arm.
@GarageTimeAutoResto
@GarageTimeAutoResto 3 года назад
I think you are right to look for another arm.

Buy the correct cable, and resell the one you have.
@GarageTimeAutoResto
@GarageTimeAutoResto 3 года назад
Exactly, I want to get the best parts that fit. The feedback I'm getting is the later arm and cable are less prone to breaking. So maybe I should sell the arm and get another? Same idea.
