Nice observations. Yeah, _all_ of the play-calling screams of coaches trying to try something special while being so insecure about getting fired that they end up doing something meh. It being the TE instead of the RB going wide doesn't require changing anything on D. Week 1 was a perfect example of how their D is being ordered around by someone worried about losing their job. They stuck to a soft zone that leaves me wondering how Geno Smith threw for three as opposed to no incompletions. Look at the replays. Every Seattle receiver is standing stock still, waiting for the ball (& Geno wasn't firing any cannons in week 1) not a Bronco in the camera frame the entire time they're standing there. You'd think Fluorescent Yellow was the greatest camouflage. (Dissly got wide open because they didn't play man coverage & everyone left him alone downfield *on what was a **_busted play_** for SEATTLE!* _HUGE_ eff up). Except the coaches can't be blamed entirely for that. Certainly the Denver defenders didn't _forget_ he was there. Kurt Warner was more of a thinking QB than people realize. He has a channel & is showing other areas where the young Broncos, combined with rookie coaching make casual mistakes that affect Wilson like running behind instead of in front of defenders on routes. The Broncos have the most dropped passes in the league. But when all is said & done, Wilson himself doesn't seem to be adjusting or care to be adjusting. His eyes _are_ locked on Cortland. To whose benefit? Certainly he knows by now how to look off protection. So I'd say a _LOT_ of things aren't gelling in Denver. I've gone from being sure it was the bad coaching (you can't _possibly_ blame Wilson for the ineffective D) especially letting the clock run out in week 1, to thinking one can only blame the coaches so much, to thinking it's all Wilson. Now, it looks like everything. If his rumored complaints in Seattle were true, then leaving this to fix itself makes no sense for his career. He looks spaced out & unconcerned as even his teammates are starting to glare at him in contempt & I have no idea why he's taking *his own career tanking* so damned calmly unless that guaranteed-$ contract has changed him & he himself hasn't realized it yet. All in all it's looking very dysfunctional.
yeah, american football is like a turn based combat game. at the macro level, it's very strategic and challenging. not that i would know though, i just like seeing big hits and back shoulder fades because i'm a dumbass who played baseball.
yeah its so complex not even me or this guy fully understand it to the level it actually is. I recommend checking out Tim Jenkins videos if your still interested.
The thinking in football is a lot greater then people originally think. So much strategy. This is why Head Coaches are the most important aspect of a team
What is mind boggling is that the Broncos didn't need to give him an extension so early, he still had 2 years left in his contract. They could've just waited to see how well he would play before giving him a 245M contract. Now they have a 33yo (soon to be 34) QB who seems to be declining already and, considering his dead cap, they can only cut him in 2026 at the earliest. And they lost 2 firsts and 2 second round picks on top of that.
This has always been russ's problem, he never makes reads in zones. He always wants the deep shot even if its a harder pass and always telegraphs it. Seattle did a good job hiding his flaws while he was in their offense
@@loganmattoon5284 elaborate, i believe that pete surrounded russ with everything to help him succeed and when the team was in its worst spot ever russ left and geno his backup showed up playing at a pro bowl level and leading the team in the middle of a rebuild with the second worst defense in the league russ's tenue in the broncos just showed how he was a product of the enviroment he was surrounded by
As a Hawks fan, I always believed Russ had concussion issues. In 2020 he was killing it until an arizona game where he got sacked hard af over and over again. For the rest of the season it looked like he was playing conked. It happened in previous seasons as well
It's crazy how the entire personality and demeanor of Wilson has changed as he became more successful. It's not weird to see until it happens to someone like Russ who seemed like the most genuine down to earth guy for years.
I think that's what left such a bad taste in the mouth of Seahawks fans. Early on the guy was such a lovable, humble, and goofy guy, but after a while he became hard to like when he started chasing money and fame like a mad man. He still is goofy though, in the most cringe way possible.
I think near the end of the Broncos season, we saw some great change in his play, as well as his attitude. Against the Chiefs he was playing his best game before getting out with a concussion, which was sad since he was finally finding himself again
These have been Russel Wilson's struggles in Seattle the last few years just to a way worse extent. Seattle's offense struggled on 3rd down last few years at least, and the middle of the field stuff has always been a issue. As a Seattle fan it's just shocking to see what's going on.
As a Seattle fan I’m not shocked. Through the offseason I had an inkling that a lot of our problems were on Russ instead of Pete. Our OC changed 4 times and our offense looked the same every year with the same problems
Pete Carroll pulled off one of the greatest trades in NFL history. He played little Russ, the Wal-Mart owned Denver donkeys and the sports gossip world. Seattle got 3 players, 4 high draft picks and have a qb that is out playing Wilson for 1/10th the cost..... For $125 million guaranteed......Denver got ......" let's ride, weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee" Oh and he has their 1&2 pick this next draft.....too fn funny. Well done Coach, well done!
5 games dude chill.😂 Seattle might draft 4 busts because they always draft terrible. It also took manning 6 games to get going in Denver so it’s far from being over
Broncos are at best desperate, at worse stupid. Who changes the entire coaching staff, including a never before head coach, and then trades the farm for a QB who is unproven in offensive design, giving the QB control, knowing the new offensive minded HC will not be able to overrule the QB. Imagine what Fangio could of done with a QB like Wilson who is a defensive minded coaches dream QB but an offensive minded coaches nightmare.
@@CasusFortuitus I mean, they watched Seahawks Russell, and they saw our guys receiving his throws. Even though Russell said he wanted to go to a city that wants to win, I guess he didn't actually bring that desire.... Sorry, Denver! Highway robbery, this is😶
@@thejman5552 I agree, but the main reason he is in Denver is the result of his conflicts with his coaches. Its a big question of how coachable he really is.
I feel sorry for Russ. He's a great quarterback but he needs a really good coach that will play to his strengths. Because heaven forbid he has a lot of weaknesses. And deciding who to throw the ball to is one of them.
This is how he played the last two years in Seattle, bronco‘s staff should’ve watched the last two years of tape. It’s almost like they were only watching tape from years before that. Great channel great video.
@Ravens Guy That really is the only way to make sense of the pairing of an inexperienced Hackett as HC with Wilson, an QB who is forcing his way out of his current team for control over the offense despite having no experience in scheme design or even an acknowledgement of his own strengths and weaknesses. I feel for Hackett, he was doomed to fail from the start; Wilson will get what he wants and Hackett can't even overrule him in most areas.
@Slywerk yeah, you just CANNOT be a garbage pocket passer and make it in the NFL today. It kinda baffles me tbh because Denver’s running game isn’t THAT bad… so you would think Russ would be able to capitalize off of that...
I remember reading sports illustrated in 2012, about the new breed of mobile QBs across the league. That was what made him special, extending plays combined with deadly accurate deep balls. I give Pete Carroll a lot of credit...plus having Lynch with you? Rus had a lot going for him early on. Now it's coaching amateur hour. Lately they're saying he's playing through an injury, but i dunno if that explains what we're seeing the last few games. It all just feels wrong in Denver. The money they spent. My God. Damn great video here. Really really well done.
It's like people have forgotten that the Read-Option QB run was a huge part of the Seattle offense during Russell's first 3 years in the NFL, including 2 Super Bowl appearances. There is no more read option being run with Russell. Also, teams had to account for his scrambling by assigning a spy defender to shadow him. That means since the read option went away he is passing against 11 defenders, not 10 defenders plus a spy assigned to Russell.
A lot of this is stuff that I've watched from Russ as a Seahawks fan the last season and a half. He's always had trouble with the middle of the field and locking on to one receiver. Worse, over the last two seasons, his ability to scramble behind the line to extend plays has really deteriorated, and his entire game was predicated on that ability. He doesn't know how to be a pure drop-back, pocket passer, which I think explains some of his bizarre check-down decisions. As Steven Ruiz of the Ringer pointed out, it's like he asks himself, what would Drew Brees or Tom Brady do here, and thinks the answer is to immediately dump it off to the back. He's thinking too much.
I seriously don’t know how Tom was able to gain so much success by just dinking and dunking to the RB most of the time😭 it’s like no defense was allowed to stop that as he slowly made his old ass way down the field into the end zone😭😭
@@nelsonalexanderjimenez8120 Brady wasn't really a dink and dunk QB, contrary to popular opinion. Unlike Russ, he knew when and why to check down, and when to let it rip. He was also great at getting to his second and third receiver down the field (his post-snap processing was the best ever). Russ's checkdowns are just performative. He doesn't seem to know why he's supposed to do them, just that the great pocket passers check down so that must be the thing to do.
As someone who likes watching football but never played past flag level due to conflicts with other sports, these videos provide incredible context and information I never would have thought of.
This type of commentary is so much better than what you see on ESPN. They are insightful and tangible to explain what is actually going on. KEEP IT UP !!!
Wow. I've not seen your channel / analysis before. I've been a football fan all my life, but the details you point out bring an extra layer of appreciation for the game. Really nice! Thanks.
Dude, this is first time that I have come across your channel and I absolutely lurrrrrve it! Your insights are amazing. Getting some quantitative back-up with figures would be awesome-sauce on top of already excellent commentary! Looking forward to more great stuff!
As a bears fan, I was really bummed when we didn't trade for russ last year but now... I'm just glad. We would be getting the same kind of production as we are now with fields....just not with 100+ million dollar contract
It’s so sad to see, man, as a broncos fan. Another loss and I think they gotta fire Hackett. Won’t fix the fix the whole problem but it’ll be a start. We’ll see what happens Monday. Thanks for the great video btw!
Remember, Wilson wanted out of Seattle for offensive control and even Hackett admitted that he let Wilson run the offense. Removing Hackett won't really fix most of the problem without bringing in a coach who can tell Wilson no without threat of being fired.
@@CasusFortuitus we need a experienced couch who is man enough to say no then. Hackett is doing poorly and if he can’t get them together we need to fire him
I think something happened in 2020 that changed Russ and his vision. The Hawks were on an offensive tear for the first half of the season and then Russ started missing guys and getting sacked a bunch. He hasn't been right since.
I was excited to see Russ leave Seattle. Seahawks needed a fresh start as Russ has been slowing down for years and getting more expensive at the same time. I live in Broncos country and have been thoroughly enjoying rocking my Hawks gear in their faces. GINO GINO GINO
I clicked on this vid just because of the title. Hilarious! The play that sums up Wilson's entire season was when he temporarily forgot he doesn't play for the hawks anymore and threw directly to the all-alone Seattle defender in the end zone. Just like old times, but wrong team Russ! LOL!!!
Russell Wilson's game was left in Seattle with Geno. You guys get Geno Smith from years ago. The trade is looking GREAT for us so far. We might even make the playoffs next year 😁
Russ can't see the middle of the field because of his lack of height. He can't see over his O-line and misses plays. This is why he used to scramble so much so that he could get out of the pocket and see down field.
there is truth in your words. see Drew Brees and how Sean Payton schemed to get him a pocket he could throw from. Russ has probably (i don’t know for sure, just an anectodal guess by my watching him for 10 years) thrown more picks or incompletes over the middle than to the sidelines or deep. He has a hard time throwing a receiver open unlike Tom Brady, Aaron Rodges, et all other better QB’s. I will give him a pass as he won our only Superb Owl, however I acknowledge (just like Eric Dickerson) said. That Defense is gonna win it. We got so used to 3 and out the fan’s would cry when the opposing offense got a first down……
@@johnkruton9708 and drew Brees is almost the opposite of Wilson, he may be one of the best ever at stepping into pressure where Wilson won't do it to save his life
Drew Brees was only 1 inch higher than Russell and he made a lot of throws over the middle of the field. His height isn’t the reason or more isn’t an excuse. He just makes really bad reads.
The easy way to put it is that the broncos play calling is absolutely awful, and now that they’ve lost javonte there’s a fold of their offensive game that’s lost. Russ also isn’t playing the same way as he used to, and that injury has to be getting to him. Just so many question marks about denver. There’s a chance these guys could be 2-5 by week 7
Great video overall. My only criticism about the video is that you didn't really emphasize how problematic the drops have been. Not only are the Broncos top 2 or 3 in dropped passes there has been multiple dropped TDs
As a broncos fan, thank you for bringing up ALL of the issues. National media is blaming it all on Russ. Both Russ and Hackett have a part in what we’ve seen so far as well as the poor play by offensive line and receivers not catching the mf ball.
Remember, Wilson wanted out of Seattle for offensive control and even Hackett admitted that he let Wilson run the offense. Removing Hackett won't really fix most of the problem without bringing in a coach who can tell Wilson no without the threat of being fired and once you do that your lose Wilson who will become a cancer behind the scenes.
Russ was thinking that Pete Carroll was holding him back from greatness when in actuality Pete was saving Wilson from himself. People in the media are shocked at what’s going on because they never watched Seahawk football. Aside from prime time games where Wilson was always able to pull out the magic. He had DK and Lockett to bail him out. Doug Baldwin and Co. before that. Carson and BeastMode before him. He’s never really thrown over the middle or to short/intermediate passes. Defenses are playing way more Cover 2 now which is taking away his bread and butter: The Moon Ball! Russ never took responsibility for his mistakes or shortcomings in Seattle and when speaking to the media only speaks in platitudes and seemingly carefully contrived “Russ’isms”. I think that’s what Sherman and other former teammates disliked the most but they explain it as Russ getting treated differently than the rest of the team. Which of COURSE HE DID! All qbs that are above average or better are. In recent seasons Russ really threw his OL under the bus. In the pre-season, his new coach proclaimed that Russ won’t get touched in Denver. Now he’s being sacked even more in DEN. Wilson has always been responsible for so many of the sacks but never took accountability or even tried to better that issue. While the same issues SOMEHOW followed him and persist in DEN that he claimed SEA never fixed, back in SEA GENO fucking SMITH is looking like a Second Team All-Pro candidate! Defenses don’t have to worry about Wilson’s legs anymore. He can’t see over the line, he seems incapable of audibling or even reading defenses. He locks eyes on a single receiver and never goes through his progressions, he just stares a single receiver down and throws it there regardless of his receiver being locked down. Teams have found out how to take away his go-to and it had proven to be his kryptonite. He has zero run game at the moment too which allows defenses to not respect him and play WAAAY more aggressive, add to that he has no rapport with his receiving corp. Lockett and Baldwin had a sort of mystical connection with Russ. They knew how to get open after the play broke down. And the final nail in the coffin… his pride is hurt… BAD! He’s in a new city and everything that can go wrong has gone wrong and his teams own fans have already Boo’d him more in a single half than his entire career combined with the Hawks. He HAS to be thinking the grass isn’t always greener. Wondering what the fuck he did. You can see it by the look on his face in the post-game talks with the media. There’s this distant gaze.. made perfect with him giving the saddest “Broncos country, let’s……… ride….” I’ve ever heard.
one thing I've realized is that he is the absolute hardest quarterback to pass block for in the league, and he's still shit at steeping up in the pocket always has been
This seems to be a situation where the quarterback hates the offensive scheme or the coach. Even a rookie would see some of these open receivers. And I agree with others posters about this video. Send it to the Broncos please!
Broncos schedule is tough to end the year. Ravens, Chiefs x2, Rams, Chargers. Time is ticking for the Broncos to ride and if they don’t fix it quickly, the Seahawks are gonna wind up with 4 picks inside the top 50.
I'm curious and excuse me if this sounds ridiculous, but could it be part of the scheme to be locked into the wr1.for years Rodgers and davante would play catch for what seemed long chunks of plays(repeatedly)and Rodgers would hit a guy for 40 yards that saw like 3 targets a game.maybe Sutton isn't that guy. Just digging for a theory
I'd be shocked if Russ didn't rebound next season. As a seahawks fan, it was odd to see him struggle so much, so it's probably due to the playbook and not having the players around him on offense that suit his skills. Payton knows what he is doing and has a history of teambuilding and success.
Watching javonte Jones jump up and down like a kid in a pick up game in basketball at 5:53 showing how absolutely open he is not only comical but also shows Russ gotta go YIKES
Russell Wilson requires a specific formula to win because he is not a complete passer. Yes in practice with no lines clashing and his vision lanes clear, he can physically make every throw out there. In a game with bodies in the way and relying on reads, routes, timing, progressions, etc, is very hard for him with so much visual clutter. He's at his best when he is a run threat and can roll out. He's not the guy that's going to carve up a defense and take every single thing they're giving up with their schemes. People like Brady and Brees could pick defenses apart with surgical precision, Russ cannot do that. From watching every seahawks game when Russ was there I'm pretty sure his issues are that he cannot go through progressions and evaluate them as quickly as the elite qbs can, and I also believe as a shorter QB he never learned to fill in the blanks like Brees can. Brees might not see his receiver for a moment, but he can use seeing around receivers, and his knowledge of the routes, timings, etc and make a snap decision to throw even if his vision isn't completely clear. Russ can't do that, he'll hesitate. Russ put up some HOF type numbers, broke some records, etc, and will probably easily get into the HOF, but in reality he has some serious deficiencies that scheme helped mask while he was in seattle.
I've never said the word ''yep'' so many times in a row before in my life. Along with a bunch of '' you got that rights'' in the mix Rapid fire '''hit the nail on the head'' moments in this video. Plus you have the deep toned voice i can hear. Keep on it brother , you have IT. For those of you who don't know what ''IT'' is . Watch and listen again. peace out.
I'm a Chiefs fan so I follow the things they do in Denver. And I had NO CLUE how anyone thought this wasn't about to happen.. Firstly because this is our division. Clearly. Nothing was gonna change that. And ESPECIALLY not Wilson coming to Denver to save a franchise with the absolute WORST COACHING STAFF IN THE NFL. They really thought he was about to come in and be the next coming of Payton Manning 😅😅😅 And then paying him everything before he even played a snap? As soon as he got paid I said he better produce immediately because they will start to dismantle that great defense to pay him before next season. And what do you know, that's already begun If everyone outside of KC would stop discrediting the greatness that Andy's been building since 2013 than understanding the progression of this division would be clear as day. We're not going anywhere anytime soon so the leaders of the AFC will be fighting to reach The Arrowhead Invitational for the foreseeable future. But Denver. . . They was going to be fighting the Raiders for 4th place in the West no matter what.
