What's Wrong With These Triple Holley Carbs? Fixing A Common Problem On Our 1970 Plymouth Roadrunner

Replacement parts, am I right? I don't know why, exactly, but I have found that the needle and seat assemblies included in a Holley carb overhaul kit are sometimes shorter than the originals I removed, leading to this float adjustment issue. A high float level in your Holley carburetor can do some strange things - and on this car, we had three high float levels, causing it to be absolutely horrible at all times. Here's what to look for, and how to adjust the float levels on your externally adjustable Holley. And here's one more reason why I really don't like Holley carburetors. The good news? This barn find 1970 Plymouth Roadrunner V code car actually kinda runs ok now. So let's go ahead and fix the horrible exhaust problem, and then it's finally time for burnouts. Everybody loves burnouts!

There’s a reason why when the cars were about 10 years old, so many of those six barrel cars wound up wth four barrels installed, and the cars had that retained theirs, it’s likely because they were never driven. So I feel for all those friends of mine that have had to hunt down all the pieces they needed to restore their cars, only to discover a world of driveability issues and diagnostic nightmares now torment them. But I do absolutely love them.

I am also not a Holley carb fan, and 3 Holleys is just 3 times the pain. I like Carters and Edelbrocks, and the Thermoquad is my favorite. I have a mildy modded 318, and first I had a 600 Holley, and I just could never get it to work right. Then one day I attempted to drive home from work, and there was gas all over the top of the engine. Not a fun time. Then, someone said "hey, I'll sell you a Thermoquad off a 77 Cordoba with a 400 for $20". SOLD! I put that T-Quad on without doing anything to it, other than adjusting the idle mixture screws and it worked like magic. I had to put an adaptor on it for the spread-bore to fit a square-bore manifold, which only seemed to help it because it raised the carb up about an inch.

Nice! I also love the Thermoquad - when it is behaving and not leaking gas from the well plugs or a warped main body, anyway - and I plan to do a big Thermoquad video in the not-so-distant future.

When I was a teen in the 80's I had a 72 Rallye Charger 440 auto as my daily driver, original 440 magnum car. I had an older friend of mine who had a 1970 Road Runner that was a factory 440 6 pack, 4 speed, super track pack 4.10 gear dana car. The Road Runner was at the time a non runner and super rusty. The 6 pack intake and carbs were in the trunk. He lent them to me to try them out and I fell in love with the 6 pack setup. I rebuilt the carbs and put the cast iron intake (weighs a ton) and carbs on my 440 Charger. Even though the system looks complicated with the 3 carbs, it is extremely simple to work on. The center carb does all the work, in effect you have a 440 2 barrel engine until you punch it and the 2 outer carbs open by vacuum. The 2 outer carbs are super simple, they have no idle circuits and no metering blocks (they have internal metering plates). As long as the outer carbs are clean, you have a good needle and seat in them, and the vacuum diaphragms are good, you are good to go. Car runs 99% of the time on the center Holley 2 bbl that is super easy to service, only time the outer carbs work is when you floor it. The linkage on the drivers side that ties all 3 carbs together was also easy to adjust, and once adjusted by the instructions on the service manual you never need to touch it again.
@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage 9 месяцев назад
That is actually not true. There are idle screws on the outer carbs, but they are preset and capped from the factory. The center carb is doing the heavy lifting, but the outer carbs *do* contribute idle fuel. This is a good thing, because on systems that idle only on the primary carb (like the dual quad progressive Hemi factory setups,) no fuel flows through the extra carb(s) unless you’re giving it the beans, and the fuel sits in the bowls and goes to crap. I learned this when I opened a front hemi carb and found what looked like the bottom of the ocean. Depending on what documentation you consult, you either will or will not be told that the outer carbs have functional idle circuits. Otherwise, awesome!
@72442conv
@72442conv 9 месяцев назад
@@DeadDodgeGarage Never figured out that the outer carbs had idle circuits back then. There was no adjustment to be made, so I figured that the only carb with and idle circuit was the center one. Good to know.

Had a ongoing argument with a buddy years ago. Me Carter, he Holly 'cause muhjustable. I always hated all major gaskets trying to contain megapuddles of gas. Give me rods, pistons and plungers over diaphragms, plates and power valves any time. As for 6 barrels or 8? 8 if theyre contained within Carter AVS's. But alas 6 barrel, 6 pack or even tri-power (gag) looks way cool.

Good video. I just rebuilt my 6 barrel set up for my 440. There are idle mixture screws in the base of the outboard carbs. They are filled in with soft metal. When the metal is removed you can adjust the idle on the outboards. Use a solvent to get them unstuck. I used longer needles on the rear carb to make it easier to adjust. Mine run smooth as a 484 cam will allow😂. Good luck.

Yes - the plugs have been removed on these. I didn’t have the time or desire to pull the rear carb and balance between all six, but they appeared to be set about where I put the front two - so I think it’s close enough.

Super Amazing Me is a Holley hater, but an insane six pack lover. Here's what has worked for me in the past. Replace the power valve with the Holley screw-in block-off piece if they still sell them. Usually, I have to install main jets 2-3 sizes larger. Note that in my cases, the engines all had slightly larger cams with 471-484 lift. The last six pack I built consisted of 3 Weber IDF40 carbs, on a modified Offenhauser intake. The entire system cost me around $1000. The 3 Webers were brand new Chinese copies at $71 a piece off of eBay. I figured that if it didn't work, I didn't lose a ton of money. Well, it runs way better than a Mopar Holley system on top of a 383 with an Erson 462 lift cam, since I finished it in 2018. I had to do a lot of research and trial and error, because the Weber carbs have a set of wet jets, and a set of dry jets, and 6 mixture screws. They are basically racing carbs with a lot of adjustability. They start mixing air and fuel inside a tube inside the carb. Very cool! Nobody thought that I could make it work, but I did! That was super amazing! I won a plaque for it in my '73 Charger with a Tremec TKO 5-speed. The first burn-out with it scared the crap out of me, but now I use it to scare my growing list of friends. Hah!

My thoughts have always been use a Holley for Performance and tuneability; use an Edelbrock for daily drivers and reliability. I've found on all my junk I've had to richen everything up because recently here in Canuckistan; they've switched to ethanol in ALL fuels now. Even the Premium has alcohol in it now. This means less fuel concentration and less MPG for sure. But it's that lack of pure gasoline I believe is what's messing up our idle mixtures. Instead of 100% gasoline; we're now getting 90% gasoline. So, we must make mixtures richer to compensate. Not sure what fuel y'all can get in Washingtown.... but I'd imagine you're in the same canoe.

Pop quiz...Why are there so many aftermarket parts available for Holley carburetors? Because they need them.😂
@briang4470
@briang4470 9 месяцев назад
The biggest problem with Holley carbs is they have waaaay too many "soft parts" or rubber components that do not last very long especially with today's fuel. Pretty much if you have a Holley carb that sits for any longer than a few months, then be prepared for leaking gaskets/accelerator pumps/power valves/ seals. I do like Holley's for a high performance "racing" applications but for a street car or daily driver I prefer quadrajets(I'm into mainly GM cars) and Edelbrocks because they can sit for many many years and will usually work perfectly with almost no issues besides maybe the accelerator pump to stop working but is a very simple and cheap fix. Also the cost of Holley products and parts have gotten crazy expensive over the past few years and their quality really seems to be dropping off.
@DeadDodgeGarage

I completely agree. I’m a diehard Carter / Edelbrock guy at this point. I’ve got Holleys for go fast purposes, but they definitely aren’t my preference for something that needs to continue to run.

Bit of an odd question, but would you happen to know how interchangeable are the column shifters on 1970 chrysler cars? Seeing a Charger dashboard in a Roadrunner is giving me some hope of interchangeability between the models.
@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage 9 месяцев назад
As far as the column itself, ‘70 B body would all work. If you mean the shifter arm, I don’t actually know the year and model spread on that, but I can tell you that many, many columns across the various Chrysler lines use the same basic setup. That dash is the “rallye dash,” which was standard in Chargers, Super Bees, and other models. I think it first appeared in the Roadrunner for ‘70, but could have been optional in ‘69. Not sure there.

@@DeadDodgeGarage I'm inclined to agree. Anything that came with FI factory is fair to keep it but I like carbs on old cars. If I wanted the experience of a new car I'd buy a new car.

Now i remember why i call them six pacs butcause you need a 6 pack to tune them. When you think you nailed it start it again and repeat. Everyone i have had sucked to keep tuned. But when they work right its party all the time and all night long. Last one i did was a T/A chally. I came up with new way to use the word fuck before i was done. Power values do not live forever even if they are new. Just sayin. Cant wait for the 70 charger tune.

Yep… I learned that on the Monaco engine and Holley I rebuilt. A brand new (40-50 year old) power valve failed right out of the kit. No back fire. Just immediately dumping fuel. That was not good…

I know you must have heard this before, but this car will do soooo much better with a good 800 com AFB, yes the Carter carb, jet it, set it and forget it! I went through my holley stage, had 4 of them before I learned my lesson, and the one 750 cfm AFB I used to drive home with beat all 4 of the holleys I had with me at the time, I was at LACR, now closed, and that AFB beat all 4 of those other carbs, better ET, better MPH along with improved 60 ft times. Sell that Restomod pile of leakers, get a good hi rise dual plane adorn with an 800 AFB and never look back. You would probably make a nice profit from the sale of that problematic 6 pack and have alot left over after getting your new manifold and carb!!

It’s so funny you should say that. I realize you probably haven’t seen my channel before this so you wouldn’t know - but I am a big Carter/Edelbrock guy. I advise them to people all the time! They are just the best for a simple carb that works and doesn’t piss fuel everywhere all the time. For a car that actually gets driven, there is no competition. I strongly believe that the AVS2 will go down in history as one of mankind’s crowning achievements. I am going to be running dual AFBs in my Barracuda drag car. Having said that… this is an original V-code 440 six barrel car. We got it up and running with the single quad manifold that was on it (probably for the reasons you just said) and then swapped back to the six barrel setup (with borrowed carbs) because it just has to have it. The carbs were missing, but the original intake and air cleaner lid were there. We couldn’t not put them back on. The triple Holleys are overly complicated, annoying to deal with, leaky, and expensive… and they’re also the single greatest thing about the car. It just went to MCACN and was shown in the barn finds section, proudly wearing the six barrel setup - and unlike the other six barrel cars in the barn find section, this one drove in and out under its own power.

Well thats cool, yes Im very new to your channel, but yes I guess if you have everything needed to light it off go for it but they never resolved their reliability, right up till today! Too bad Carter AFB's cant be cut in half, and used as a 6 pack themselves, then they would run right!@@DeadDodgeGarage

You have a leaking power valve
@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage 9 месяцев назад
Absolutely a possibility, but I find it odd that it got happier the more idle fuel I added. Main carb idle screws ended up much further out than I would expect it to want with six active idle circuits. One would think it would have needed much less idle fuel if it was guzzling fuel through the power valve. It doesn’t puke black smoke, either, and once I got the tune to a workable state it seemed alright. In any case… it went on a transport truck for a big adventure today. I won’t be able to check the power valve for a while.

Right. I definitely don’t know anything about setting float levels correctly, power valve tuning, squirter sizes, the pump cam chart, vacuum secondary spring tuning… I’m a clueless moron! I don’t like them because of everything about them. Fuel leaks aren’t my favorite thing - inside the engine or outside. And that’s all these Holleys seem to want to do.

I still have an original set of these carbs that I took apart to have cleaned and re-plated afterwhich I rebuilt them. I already had a six pack set up on my car and was going to use them for another project that never materialized. If you know what you're doing this setup works great. The biggest problem this setup had was people working on them that didn't know how they worked messing them up. If you had room under the hood and put spacers under these carbs the response was dramatic.
@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage 9 месяцев назад
Nice. I’m kind of playing stupid here - I have a good understanding of the basics of their operation. Fine tuning the secondary opening point is something I haven’t gotten into (and don’t want to.)
