The Seahawks recently traded for a young quarterback in Sam Howell. In this film room episode, I aim to find what he brings to the Seahawks and why they targeted him.
Commanders fan here. I was hurt how Sam was treated here but The Seahawks have always been my sleeper team. I’m definitely glad he’s there. Our system was nothing to prepare for because everyone knew we’d throw 95% of the game.
& we have had the same problem. Thats why last 2 years we started like 4 & 2 an then lose 4 straight end up 9 & 8. Our rb walker is a playmaker but never finishes wit 20 plus carries. We throw an use the shotgun formatioon way to much.
@@mbloom253 The name change comes with the nature of the business, I guess. We’re living in a PC society. I can see you guys turning some things around with the coaching staff.
Redskins fan here.. not too happy about this one. Y’all got a dawg with Sam. our line was beyond garbage and EB’s play calling and balance was horrific. He has a lot of potential. I’m rooting for him!
Absolutely. I think that is the biggest upside to trading for Howell over just drafting one. He knows what being an NFL starter is like so that is a big plus. Thanks for watching!
@@littlebilly8747They definitely did. His Int% was 3.4%, Josh Allen was 3.1%, Mahomes was 2.3%. He can definitely improve his % and with less attempts this last years total Ints will be an obviously inflated number.
Yep, I am definitely excited about getting this young man to Seattle. I reaply feel like Grubb can tap into his full repertoire of skills and really help Sam reach the best version of himself. It was definitely a low cost low risk, high reward trade. John was playing 4D chess with this move, which in this particular draft and year was big time for us. Bravo to John for getting him and I look forward to watching him grow into the player he's going to be. A year behind Geno will do wonders for him.
Sam's highlights from last year will blow your mind. A lot of the passes that he completed are some of the best passes you'll ever see. Great ball placement, accurate, zip on the ball when needed, and beautiful touch when needed. You can see the traits this kid has that should lead you to believe he's going to be a great quarterback. The only thing I didn't agree with this breakdown was his pocket awareness and his ability to move in the pocket. It's hard to say if he can do that or not. When your o-line is as bad as his was last year and you have no confidence that there is an actual pocket to step up in or move around in, it's hard to do so. Before the bye week last year, this dude was looking like one of the better quarterbacks in the NFL. After the bye week, I felt people gave up, but Howell kept pushing. He's going to be a great QB for years to come.
I agree with you that it was a good trade: the trade itself didn’t cost much, his salary won’t cost much over the next two years, and he is young enough that he could develop over time.
He's younger than Nix, Milton and Rattler and has been in the league 2 years. The adjusted swap is like a 5th? This is a slam dunk. Anyone complaining about compensation is outside of their mind.
Congrats on getting The Howellitzer. His best quality imo was shaking off bad series. Throws an interception, no sweat, goes back and tries to figure it out. Treat him good.
@dokedoker3340 Bro I've seen you in like 5 different comment threads. Stop hating and get off the internet for a bit. Like wtf does Sam Howell bother you so much?
Two seconds or less is all the man had on almost all passing plays! Give the man the same amount of time as all his opponents had to throw along with a running game and he will tear the league up! His abilities to go through the read progression is a lot better than you gave him in your critique but I will give you credit for showing the bonehead play with four receivers running the same route. That was what he was up against the whole season ! As soon as the other defenses got to see EB's offense with no running game they just laid back their ears and came after him on every play. I will never forgive EB or Ron Rivera for what they did to Sam. Seattle will learn soon enough what they have in Sam, He will know the entire playbook before training camp starts and will back it up with stellar performances! Seattle fans will be in for a treat! Somehow us east coast fans are going to have to figure out how to get Seattle games out here cause we believe in Sam and want to see him rise through the turmoil that he has had to endure! Seattle fans get ready for some excitement and a barn burner of QB competition ! POMO
I’ve never seen Rob Staton break down film like this or talk about Xs and Os, dude is clueless a lot of times. I really like Howell in Seattle. Just cause you watch someone’s college tape doesn’t mean you’re some type of expert, and I hate when reporters gatekeep fans of doing the same thing. Thanks a lot for this video!
I think his style of play is a comp to something like a mix of Baker Mayfield & Josh Allen. He definitely needs development, but he has some positive traits to work with.
If you really want to know how good Sam Howell is get on U-Tube and pull up all his games from last year. It won't take long for you to figure out what went wrong. He beat the crap out of Dallas in his first NFL start the year before with another OC. He is a hell of a lot better than most people think he is and if he can recover from from the beating he took last year he will be better than Geno ever was. Count on it! Can't wait to see him in preseason! He will know the entire playbook before training camp starts and will only get better as he gets to know his new receivers. I hope the receivers like the ball in their chest because that is where he will put it! He is very accurate and can make every throw there is! He is an excellent scrambler and will lead by example. There is no quit in him! POMO
You know what. This might be a solid pick up. Especially being soo young.....we might have found a qb for the next 5 plus years. & sittin behind geno for a year will be good for him
Another Commanders fan here.. Love Sam Howell and thought that the Commander's new regime were monumentally stupid to give up on a QB with that much potential still on his rookie contract ! Have no problem with them drafting Jayden but Sam would have been an excellent back-up .. much better than the back up QB we have now !!! The OC Eric Beiniemy did the worst possible job of developing a young QB, add to that a lousy offensive line and you wind up with garbage .. Sam was getting beat to a pulp and that's when the interception issue went down hill ...Major incompetence that caused Sam's play to go down.. He started off great and most Commander fans know that what happened wasn't Sam's fault !!! Y'all gotta diamond in tha rough ...smh
As a Washington fan, I attribute a lot of Sam Howell's struggles to Eric Bieniemy (aka extra buns). Way too many to list here, but let's just say that this past season proved why EB has never received a HC offer, and is now not even coaching in the NFL. If you guys can have patience and develop Sam well, then I think he can be your franchise QB for years to come.
Alright! I think that'll be my next video (assuming the contract details get released soon because I want to know those before i make it). Thanks for watching!
So not going to miss Jamal Adam's missed tackles like this, was like a human pin ball that over pursued and always going for a arm tackle that doesn't work. Definitely was playing not to get hurt😔
Glad to see Sam in Seattle with a fresh start. They got an excellent QB. Nice to see someone recognizes his outstanding potential and he is out of that Washington quagmire.
Legion - wow dude, i didn't even know you existed. just found you, finally a Seahawks guy that knows how to break down tape, and a humble one at that. you mentioned LSU, how'd you know the name of their concepts? i like you. -barbie:)
Thanks for watching! To be completely honest i remembered that was in a Brett Kollman video so I went and tried to find the playbook. Thanks for watching!
I like both of those ideas! Probably later in the offseason but I definitely want to dive into the film of both of those guys. Added to my (ever growing) list. :) Thanks for watching!
"What would you do?" Playing QB in the NFL against he 49ers?! I'm panicking and trying not to die. I would have no effin clue what to do! And that's why i'm just a fan
Sam Howell is a baller and can play QB well but without a OL he was lucky to survive to play again ! I grew up a Redskins fan , can they ever become a great ball team again ?
JS has drafted 2 QBs since he's been in Seattle. I think this approach--acquiring QBs with upside that offer acceptable production while remaining cheap--is a smart approach, although it doesn't lead to finding an elite QB. If Howell can develop into at least 80% of what Geno can produce, his contract makes it a no-brainer that he should get a crack at starting in 2025. Big if, but IF Howell develops, he saves almost $38M against the cap. Sam had similar bad team play as Seattle--a bottom 5 pass pro OLine and bottom 5 defense, plus playcalling that seemed to ignore the running game. Geno was able to be much more efficient under similar circumstances because he's been in the league for a decade and doesn't make the same mistakes Howell made (65 sacks and 21 INTs is pretty damn bad). Howell also padded his stats playing from behind and passing in a lot of garbage time. But he has talent and can improve. And at $1M/year, Howell Could offer Seattle some flexibility while they build the roster and keep looking for the opportunity to draft or sign the next guy.
I agree that Howell makes it far more likely that the hawks wil cut Geno. The hawks would only save $25M ($13M in Dead money) but that is enough for it to be an option. Howell has a long shot of being an elite level qb (I think his highest upside would be something like 90% of Josh Allen) but giving him a chance in 2025 would make sense.
Me too. At first I was confused but the more I think about it, the more it makes sense and I think he could quite easily be the starter in 2025 if Geno doesn't ball out.
For sure. Fields has a bunch of highlight plays for sure, but he is just so bad at reading the field that it is difficult to say he will ever be an NFL level passer.
I agree but the guy threw the ball more than any other player in the NFL this year and his offense was objectively terrible. I don't see a reckless (Drew Lock) gunslinger that will throw picks a ton but more a guy that just didn't know where to go with the ball. Thanks for watching!
Almost looks like Tom Brady stats, with a better o-line coaches receivers ect. Sam had none of that and could turn out to be the future QB for you guys, he is tuff as nails, I will be rooting for ya.@@The_Legion_of_12s
I think Howell could certainly be as good or better than Purdy but they are VERY different players stylistically. Purdy wins with his processing and anticipation while for Howell those are weaknesses. Howell instead wins with his arm strength and accuracy down the field, which I would say are Purdy's weaknesses. They are pretty much opposite players but I think that if Howell develops he could absolutely play on Purdy's level - just in a different way.
@@The_Legion_of_12s I disagree. Purdy wins like that because Shannahan and the player personal sets it up for him that way. He can throw to Deebo, CMC, Kittle, or Aijuk. Plus best rushing team in the league. I believe Howell could possibly thrive just as much as Purdy on that team.
@@johncatalano7101sorry for the late reply this some how slipped through. I don’t disagree that Howell can be as good as Purdy and I agree Purdy is wildly overrated. But they have very different play styles so Howell would win differently.
Not everything. Howell definitely has some major weaknesses but i was stunned by how incompetent the offensive design was. I'm telling you that is unlike any NFL offense (other than Matt Canada's Steelers) that I have ever watched. Definitely a major part of the problem and the Commanders should be glad that he is gone.
@@teslamodelxdaniel8260 I don't disagree. I first of all think Brissett is a pretty good quarterback (not a franchise guy but definitely a top 32 player) and also a better fit. I will say, I have watched more Howell film and there were certainly games earlier in the year where the playcalling was much better, or even good. I don't really know what happened to make them shift to all of this quick game nonsense but it seemed to coincide with Howell playing poorly. End of the day, I think the offense towards the end of the year didn't use any of Howell's strengths and instead asked him to play like an NFL vet. Thanks for the comment and I wish I answered this in the video :)
@@The_Legion_of_12swould like to see a video on JSN. I think he is doomed with Lockett back this year. I don't see him putting up 1st round value unless Dk or Lockett goes out for an extended period of time. Very disappointing
His INT rate is the same as Allen for the Bills. 3%. Howell just threw it more. Of course, the bad side is Allen is a turnover machine so take the 3% rate with a grain of salt.
I think he is a little better but I'm working on a big Geno video (or probably video series) and still need to watch a bunch more film. Geno is definitely not as good as Howell outside of the pocket because Sam can really pull away but they are rather similar.
A 4-man pattern that wasn't going to work. He should have thrown the pick. You throw it away you don't throw it into the coverage. That's the problem. It wasn't the bad play it was the bad pass he shouldn't have thrown. That's been a Josh Allen problem with the Bills. Not every play is going to work. Don't try and make it work.
I agree. End of the day, even if he is in a more competent offense, he needs to know when he should just throw it away. I think the Josh Allen comparison is correct, he has a lot of that same unhinged aggressiveness.
WELCOME TO SEATTLE SAM. GOOD LUCK. MAKE US PROUD IF YOU START. . FINGERS CROSSED. . GO HAWKS. SEATTLE NATION. . SEATTLE ALL THE WAY. . 💙💚💙💚💙💚💙💚💙💚💙💚💙💚💙💚💙💚💙💚💙💚💙💚💙💚💙💚💙💚💙💚💙💚💙
Sorry can’t sell me on acquiring a quarterback with 21tds to 21 interceptions with blaming the OC when they got rid of a quarterback who played better and the excuse to get rid of him was to many turnovers. You need to give a more honest assessment… GO HAWKS
Thanks for your comment. I agree the TD to INT ratio is bad but I think that he is a young player who could turn into more than that. Josh Allen and Peyton Manning had terrible stats too. That's by no means a comp but I'm just saying your first year doesn't define you and you can't deny that he has so crazy highlights (and lowlights to be fair). :) Thanks for watching. I'll probably make a follow up video where I take a deep dive into even more games.
Commanders fan here. Don’t let our fans gas you. Sam Howell is trash. Most of our fan base is delusional. To see we got 3rd round value trade for him we fleeced you guys
I've heard a lot of commanders fans think he's bad so I'm not surprised. I will say that the more accurate trade charts have this value closer to a late day 3 pick, so as a hawks fan I don't feel that bad about the trade if you're right and he's trash. He'll just be a cheap backup QB for the next two years and then moves on. Thanks for watching! I always love seeing fans from other teams and I appreciate your perspective.
I think at this point, that is the smart move. The 49ers are at the height of their powers and the Rams are still a powerhouse. With a first year coaching staff, going all in to try to match the division doesn't make sense. The best thing the hawks can do right now is build towards 2025 and 2026 while trying to get a wild card birth for the time being.
