Do you know the difference between a Tier 1 Ranger and a Tier 2 Ranger? First and foremost, United States Army Rangers in the 75th Ranger Regiment are one of the most capable and lethal special operators in the entire world. However, deep within the 75th Ranger Regiment is the Army Ranger’s Tier One Unit: Regimental Reconnaissance Company.
But what does the Regimental Reconnaissance Company do? Is a Tier 1 Ranger better than a Tier 2 Ranger? How does one join the RRC? What about the 75th Ranger Regiment? So, This guy really has no idea what he is talking about. I was a Ranger from 2004 to 2018, 2/75 and served as a member of RRC for 4 of those years. Both are equally trained, equally equipped, and equally classified in operation. They are absolutely on the same level with the same skills, just used in a slightly different mission set MOST of the time. a 75th regiment ranger from 1st, 2nd, or 3rd will be primarily used for QRF missions, Air field, night raids, search and rescue etc, However, they will also from time to time do the job of RRC and RRC will from time to time do the job of 1st, 2nd or 3rd. Tier is NOT what training do you have, its absolutely What is your primary objective. The primary objective of one is the secondary objective of the other so they all have the exact same training.

I don’t buy your story. US Ranger RRC is an SMU of JSOC, while the 75th Ranger Regiment are only controlled by JSOC when deployed as part of a JSOC Task Force. The Ranger RRC are a permanent component of JSOC called Task Force Red (1st SFOD-D = TF Green, DEVGRU = TF Blue, 24 STS = TF White, US Army’s Intelligence Support Activity = TF Orange). While I am in no way diminishing the capabilities of my Rangers, these two units have different core missions.

As I understand it, the Tier system is "purely" a budgetary notion. The Tier One units are the top line of the JSOC budget and gets funding first (and most). Tier Two is next and etcetera etcetera. Also, the notion that going Rangers to get into JSOC is "easier" because it's quicker is hilarious. It's the same amount of pain, just doled out in less time.
@ivang1860
@ivang1860 2 года назад
You are correct. It’s purely budgetary. It has nothing to do with ranking. It’s for a narrow mission set that deals with a specific CONPLAN.
@DJ-fd4qk
@DJ-fd4qk 2 года назад
Yep, it’s all budget. JSOC has separate funding from the rest of the military. That budget is specifically set aside for counterterrorism-centered units which is what JSOC does. A Tier-1 operator gets more training because they have more money, and more money because they require more training for special missions. Are they the best operators on the planet? Absolutely. Are they that much better than tier 2 guys that everyone makes them out to be? No, as demonstrated by the fact ODAs used to have CRF’s that fulfilled the same roles for when JSOC was unavailable for missions.

@@awarenesswithchris Ive never heard them called National Mission Forces except by WA Post, and WAPO is usually wrong about this stuff lol. They’re just JSOC or SMUs. National Mission Force is a term that more applies to the intel community in conjunction with JSOC, like CYBERCOM and the Cryptologic Service Components since altogether they carry out priority-1 missions. Just finished reading “Sua Sponte” by Dick Couch. An awesome book that discusses the selection, training, and deployment work up for Army Rangers in the 75th Ranger Regiment. Couch describes interesting details of life in the Regiment such as why Rangers still need to go through Ranger School if they are to be NCOs or higher. I’m not a Ranger therefore it was very enlightening to learn so much about an awesome organization.

Why do they since they’re meant for direct action tasks?
@LtActionCam
@LtActionCam 2 года назад
@@1anre According to the book, Ranger School is a physically and mentally arduous leadership school. Each Ranger student is graded upon their performance in their assigned billets. Each student can be assigned any billet at anytime and must perform to standard. Ranger School forces all students to go through the proper repetition of troop leading steps while perfecting tactical judgement in the numerous scenarios the Ranger Cadres give them. Rangers that pass (unfortunately there are Rangers that do not. This is an incredibly hard school) go back to the Regiment as better combat leaders that are more capable of leading troops in arduous situations. The book “Sua Sponte” articulated that most Rangers that go to Ranger School are Rangers that are below E4 grade. If I remember correctly, the regiment will not retain anyone in the regiment past E4 or higher if they are not Ranger School qualified. Again, I am not a Ranger and this is all from the book. I hope a real Ranger can correct and add more detail to this topic. I highly recommend the book! And this is coming from a Marine.

Put it this way. When I was in it was- 1. Basic 2. AIT 3. Jump School 4. RIP If you made it through RIP you got your black beret and orders cut for 1 of 3 Battalions. Believe me, making it through RIP (now called RASP) is no easy chore. The guys who make it to Battalion are highly motivated. Once in Battalion it took about 3 to 6 more months of training then a slot opens for Ranger School. Usually you return to Battalion after Ranger School as an E-5 or quickly become promotable. Now here is what I found about life in Battalion. There are even greater levels of Ranger Performance Ratings. Its really unofficial but think of it this way. I was in 3rd Battalion Charley Company from 84-87. When I saw new guys come into Batt out of RIP you always wanted to recruit studs into your company/platoon and squad. All Rangers want to be immediately surrounded by the best of the best as the price you might pay for anything less could be eternal. If you think about an American football team, there are guys who make the final 53 man roster cut and are on the team, but not all of them are equal. Some guys never get off the bench or get playing time while other guys are so good they start on offense, defense, punt team, kick off team and kick off receiving team. That is probably the best analogy I can provide about being in a Ranger Battalion. RLTW

"What do we mean by that?" It means you have no idea what you are talking about. Tiers are about budget. Not how 'elite' a unit is, or their tasking. In reality, a nuclear powered aircraft carrier, its planes and crew is tier one due to budgets. CAG and DEVGRU's combined budget doesn't even come close to one aircraft carrier. DEVGRU and Delta combined also don't have the budget of the 75th. And guys in RRC don't see themselves as any better than guys in the rest of the Regiment. 99% of the come from Regiment and the new(ish) Recce Platoons. They are too busy for that childish crap. It's just a different job and a different skill set. Also, 18 year old Rangers off the street are doing some classified missions you'll never hear of and the whole Regiment now answers to JSOC as part of SOF-JTF's as and when needed. SMUs just don't have the assaulter numbers and logistics (RSTB) or intel support (RMIB) they needed and Regiment got a kick upstairs because the rest of SOCOM/JSOC needed the help. 18 year old E-2 and E-3 line Rangers today are doing multiple missions a night that only ~20 years ago were considered 'CAG only'. In the early to mid-2000's a CSM and Colonel (ex-Rangers) came back from CAG to Regiment to oversee the changes and kick things into high gear on every level and for every aspect. They reinvented how Regiment did business. New compound, better housing, better facilities, personal gear cages separate from the accommodation, our own long and short gun ranges away from Big Army, a massive gym and full time physio / nutrition support that would make any college football team jealous, completely overhauled PT program that cost millions to produce that every other SOCOM / JSOC unit ended up copying. Heightened medic / TCCC training, more integration with other SOF units, massive budget increases, we stood up an extra line company and support company at every line Batt, sniper platoons and recce platoons and their own selection programs, RRD got a new name and improved selection program, as well as RSTB and RMIB so all of our support was organic and we could better assist other SOF units and three letter agencies. Better vehicles, better training, less chest beating, in compound bars so after spending millions training Rangers they didn't get dinged for an OUI, etc. It was initially called the 'Ranger 2000' program. If you dig around, you can find PDF's of it online. I realize you need to generate ad revenue and clicks, but at least get your facts straight before posting crap like this. Ex-B/3/75

I know tiers are bullshit hence the way I was trying to tie things together to make some sense to others. You then jump on me like a nobody. I don't have a high opinion of myself, I was trying in some way to prove to you that I did serve because you didn't believe me. Now you turn it around as if I am some type of glory seeker which, I am not. So Adios and have just think next time about who you might be responding to instead of making generic statements. Any branch of the military can go to ranger school, my friend from high school went into the Air Force as a CCT, after a few deployments he attended and passed ranger school as an airmen. He said that CCT was a long tough training pipeline and that ranger school was like 50 days straight and it sucked, he lost like 20 pounds and said ranger school was tough.

Generally,Ranger School is an Army leadership course for Army personal. However, they do provide school seats for other US armed forces (Air Force and Marine Corps) and allied militaries. During the height of the GWOT, The Army went through a period where they couldn't get many combat veterans from combat arms units to go to the school. Some of the reasons were those guys had already seen combat and felt that much of the deprivations of Ranger School meant to similate the stress of combat, wasn't needed because they had learned the hard way to perform in combat and in many cases, to lead other troops in combat. In response, the Army filled many seats with larger numbers of support personal and other service branches such as the Air Force.

Great video guys!!! Couple points. Team House had a great interview with a former RRC Operator. Like a lot of JSOC guys the big thing they do differently is operating covertly meaning pseudo-espionage and tradecraft skills. That tends to set them apart from the rest of the Regiment. The other issue relates to this. Because those skills are necessary working in JSOC they are often used and work in blended teams with operators from other JSOC Units as well since they have the tradecraft and can shoot-move-communicate. I love the work and time you guys spent on this and shared it with friends. Keep up the great work, you guys are doing well!

After watching the BRC for a number of years and watching the 2 man teams run the Darby Queen, it's clear that Rangers in general are a 'type'. Whereas you might see big goony Green Berets, the Rangers in general seem to all be 5ft.11in 185lb cardio machines carved from hard wood. Is this because a Regiment Unit will be larger than say a DEVGRU or CAG Unit, where most seem to be well over the 6ft 225lb mark. Is it on purpose ? While I am sure that there is more of a mix that I am describing, generalizing none the less seems to follow what I said. The only smaller DEVGRU and CAG men that I have seen tend to be Officers. Non Coms seem to fit a mold, as well as E's in general. Thoughts ?

Good info, yes there is a Tier 1 Group that works primarily w/USSOCOM but understand its more complicated than what you present, they want the best of the Ranger SAPPERS, the guys who dominate in the Ranger Challenge, and those who were heavily cross-trained in various other disciplines such as FIST and FAC. Tier 1 guys are your true LRRP guys and fully HALO and HAHO qualified. When they are sent out they are tippiest pointiest point of the spear. Usually having surveilled an area for weeks or days undetected. So Tier 1 is more like a scalpel whilst Tier 2 is the more traditional sledgehammer that gets in quick, smashes and kills fucking everything, then GTFO just as quick. Not that I'm biased but they seem to tap 2nd Ranger more often than 3rd just say'n... All Batts are normally on the same deployment rotation as everyone else, but 3/75 gets picked for ad hoc stuff far more often because they are under the flagpole at Benning. Literally down the way and a very short walk from Regiment HQ. Just makes it easier and faster to deploy as and when required. So it makes sense. E.g. When all those SEALs went down in 2005, a platoon from C/3/75 got alerted with some guys from their assigned RRC Team (3) and deployed to go and rescue anyone still alive and then recover any bodies. And they were still at Benning and all of 2/75 was already in country and far closer. The guys from C/3/75 and RRC Team Three guys just grabbed their gear, drove down to the airfield and split. When they finally caught up with Marcus Luttrell, it was Rangers that rescued him and got him out. Then they spent the rest of their time recovering the rest of the bodies. Then sadly got home and had to deploy with the rest of 3/75 right back to the same place only a couple weeks later. But hey, that's the job. As far as the rest of your post, you clearly have no idea what you're talking about. Ex B/3/75

I stood fast , went to Sand Hill , and they told me my orders had been rescinded , and to return to Main Post for further assignment . I ran into a spoon ( cook) who stepped out of formation for an alternative assignment , get detailed to 18TH Div. Airborne (Puking Dragon ) in Italy , and I got sent to Regiment . No. They normally keep eyes on until it's all done. Intel is what radios, SAT phones, cameras and field laptops are for. They also occasionally join in on raids or call in air support. If they need a ride back, they catch one with the other guys when they leave if they aren't on their own GMV's. No point taking eyes off a target until it's all over. Intel is fluid from beginning to end. Sometimes they even stick around and see who comes to check out the damage and possibly call in another raid.

Delta Force is primarily made up of Rangers. Upwards of 70% of Delta Force Operators come from the 75th Ranger Regiment. The RRC is obviously also made up of mostly Rangers from line Ranger Battlions. Delta Force does select Operators from the 1st Special Forces Regiment but it predominantly selects from the 75th Ranger Regiment. The 1st Capabilities Integration Group (Airborne) more commonly referred to as the Intelligence Support Activity selects largely from the 1st Special Forces Regiment mainly Special Forces Intelligence Sergeants MOS 18F. That's on top of the minimum of 4 years you would likely have spent as a Ranger Assaulter attending many Special Operations courses. The 1st Special Forces Command is the force of choice when it comes to FID, SFA, CMO, PSYOP, Unconventional Warfare and Irregular Warfare. While the line Ranger Battlions are one of the 3 Primary Surgical Strike elements for JSOC. It just depends on what mission needs to be conducted. Line Battlion (not RRC) Rangers have conducted Covert Unconventional Warfare missions for the CIA in Pakistan, but that is less common. Delta and Seals are small groups with a direct mission set. Rangers “Regiment” are bigger direct action infantry units that are used to overwhelm the enemy. So of course they would be deployed more and longer. Delta and Seals go in covertly and snatch up the target or hostage before the enemy realizes what hit them. By the time they notice Delta and Devgru are gone leaving behind a few unsuspecting dead bad guys. For instance the story of a Combat Controller name John Chapmen was embedded with a small team of Seals (because that what CCTs do as fellow tier 1 guys in JSOC) was killed holding it down for what seem like days was eventually killed on a afghan mountain. So it goes: a small team of Seals was put together to retrieve the body of another operator I believe a Seal. Upon arriving on location the teams chinook went down hit by a RPG. The CCT guy engaged the enemy in knee deep snow as the seal guys were pinned down already taken a few casualties. The CCT commenced to kicking ass and taking names! He was even able to take over one of the Talibans firing points in a close quarters gun fight, all while being being hit multiple times himself. It took Rangers, who were already on standby as the quick reaction team a day or so to get to the point on the mountain due to the snow and rugged terrain. In the meantime the CCT guy was able to pull himself together and continue the fight, drawing fire to his position away from the injured Seals. Eventually the Rangers did get on scene rescuing the seal team. So yea, the Rangers eventually helped out. However, John Chapman of the USAF 24th STS, the CCT, the real hero and the initial deceased Seal was left behind sadly, do to enemy pressure. I know I probably got off topic a little bit But once I got started and mentioned Sgt. Chapman I had to tell history. As a fellow Airman, I had and will tell his story any chance I get. Especially when another branch wants to brag about how good they are ir when they like to diss and make jokes about the Air Force. Just know Mr ranger Sniper, the Air Force 24th STS: PJs/CCTs/SRR/TACPs are tier 1 for a reason!

"Especially when another branch wants to brag about how good they are ir when they like to diss and make jokes about the Air Force." The only branch that has THAT distinction, is the united states marine corps. Stop with the "making fun of the air force" crap, man. Most combat arms personnel don't talk $h1t about the air force. That's mostly pogs. REAL grunts know we all play for the same team. Let people talk smack. I wouldn't care if you had the cushy-est job in history. Without the Air Force, it'd be damn near impossible to kick as much ass as we do, as a "NATION"! Dick measuring is for people with rice dicks. REAL badasses don't NEED to brag.

3/75 RTLW edit: i mean being in regiment was like a much better funded, better equipped infantry battalion. Every ranger is skilled as a E6/E7 11B. Thats the best way i can put it. Ive seen several infantry battalions in 101st and in 506th, 501st and 509th airborne that lived up to it. Ranger can easily get bogged down with SOF tier 1 unit and have a regular infantry battalion join in the fight and work side by side overcoming an objective. Also you will be pushed to join STB in your battalion as you progress in your career at regiment.

Tier 1 means predominantly CT focused, and how they’re tasked and managed within the SOF community, it’s an incredibly misunderstood concept that gives the perception that tier 2 and 3 are much less capable forces. They have completely different functions, that said, Tier 1 receive more funding and specialized training. Though there’s a lot of great shit that non Tier 1 units do on a daily basis!
@delaseoul87
@delaseoul87 2 года назад
Not really. You’d be amazed at how many Tier 1 operators are on VIP protection details. Direct Action and Hostage Rescue are the 2 main roles of Delta and DEVGRU. CT would be a general third. Special reconnaissance/information support for ISA and RRC.

This is stupid. The RRC is for the Regiment. But, it also works with Tier 1 Units. Why? Because, the Rangers back up and support those units.
@asce9182
@asce9182 2 года назад
The RRC is a Tier 1 Special Mission Unit that happens to be housed in the Special Troops Battlion of the 75th Ranger Regiment. Initially they were used as a Regimental asset for the 75th Ranger Regiment called RRD-Regimental Reconnaissance Detachment. JSOC recognized the skill of the operators and the unit was increased to company strength and changed to the RRC to provide its Reconnaissance capabilities to JSOC. The 75th Ranger Regiment then created the Battlion Reconnaissance Platoons to take over some other the RRDs old missions. The Ranger Regiment is one of the 3 primary surgical strike assets alongside CAG and DEV.
