Im surprised no mention of dedicated winter cycling shoes - I have the fizik artica boots and they are one of the best investments I ever made...always warm and dry, no faffing with shoe covers, no decision to be made and no regrets about making the wrong one!!
True, that’s something I forgot. I haven’t used them as it’s dry a majority of the time here in Spain, but for rainier or snowier conditions, they’re a huge help and highly recommended.
Some great points. A good rain jacket saved me last week on Mallorca. Weather turned out way dodgier and windy than expected in the mountains. I underrated how nice it is to know you can rely on your gear even when the weather turns on you. Also Sepp is a sick collab dude. Great stuff 🙏🏻
Heated gloves and socks have been a game changer in terms of keeping me riding outside and commuting in winter in Chicago. The Snowdeer ones on Amazon have been fantastic over the past 2 seasons.
Fall/Winter is my absolute favorite time to ride. 30-50°F is pretty normal where I am at. Merino wool is your best friend!! Also, (shameless plug) I am a BIG fan of Attaquer's All Day winter gear 😉 Thanks Tristan!
#GCKUSS Interesting stuff. On base layers, I‘d add in: Look for a polypropylene mesh to wear directly on the skin. This absorbs almost no water and keeps you dry. Then a merino on top if that. Traps air in the mesh structure which keeps you warm and soaks away the moisture.

So generous of Sepp Kuss to share his knowledge here. I agree that tights > leg warmers, unless there are really extreme temperature changes that will happen over the course of the day. Messing around with arm warmers and leg warmers in the middle of a ride always sounds better on paper IMO.

Bought some Buffs during my first trip to Girona back in 2010. Still the best piece of cycling apparel I’ve ever purchased. During that same trip, learned the gas mitt trick (thanks, Repsol!) to add a layer under your gloves. On a separate note, loved the Bimba cameos!

#GCKUSS 😊 have a similar feeling towards shoe covers as Sepp. Down to 0 °C in dry conditions, toe covers work amazingly well for me. Toe covers are underrated!😅

Sepp mentioned he likes warm but thin gloves-- I found the Spatz gloves to be super warm for their weight because they have a long cuff that goes up the wrists. They also have a deployable lobster wind shell for descents. Highly recommend!
It's so easy in the UK as it's always cold, always windy and relentlessly pisses it down. Up north anyway, the south is so much drier/white winter over shoes/S-works 😂
Wow, you have a much different temperature range for what you call winter. Winter in my mind is anything below 32°F. Here in Vermont, 3 of the 4 categories you use are spring or fall and sometimes summer.
Yeah, in parts of the world none of this would classify as winter and in other parts (where I lived in Australia for example) it would rarely reach the bottom two categories even during the coldest months. So it’s more just about giving people an idea of what to wear if they’re new to cycling or going somewhere outside of their regular temperature range.

Chapters are great for this kind of breakdown of information and what was great - showing your choice of clothes for different temperatures. Is it possible to show you settings of garmin computer for training? It would be helpful
If you do suffer from very cold feet and fingers even with all Tristan mentioned try some high quality heated gloves and socks. Gamechanger for me living in Switzerland where it sometimes gets very cold in winter.
This is good advice. I haven’t tried them myself but concede that people ride in temperatures a lot colder than what I discuss in this video, and it definitely sounds like heated gloves and socks solve a few issues for people.
Heated socks don't work nearly as well as dedicated winter shoes. Of course, both may be required but my warmest winter shoes work quite well down to -40
Pretty easy to dress for everything over 0c. Different story when it's -20 and colder when the grease in your freehub gets so thick that the pawls won't engage.

I definitely understand this amount of kit is unattainable for most people..it ain’t cheap, that’s for sure. A few good winter pieces can make a big difference though, no matter which brand they’re from. Long sleeve base layer, tights, a good gilet, buff, winter socks and a packable rain jacket are some basics to help get one through winter rides, the rest is all nice to have. I’ve learned that cyclists are so obsessed with their body temperature. I came from soccer where you throw on a base layer and suck it up. I don’t blame cyclists for caring so much, I’ve gone on some bad weather rides, I’ve learned valuable lessons.
Soccer and cycling place two different demands on your body. Soccer doesn’t involve wind chill, altitude, freezing descends, steady efforts or even efforts sustained for longer than a few minutes at a time. The potential for hours of discomfort on end if you dress incorrectly on a long, rainy ride is why there’s a need for such a focus on what to wear on the bike in winter, not to mention the fact you can’t just duck off the side of the field and grab whatever you need to stay warm when it gets cold.
It depends on the use. Covers are more affordable and turn any shoe into a winter shoe, whereas full winter shoes will be warm and waterproof all the time, but cost more and aren’t great once the temperature warms up. If you’re riding in snow continually, they’re recommended, but for intermittent cold weather, covers will usually suffice.
Hello my friend, I am following you from Algeria, and I am wondering why I suffer from it in my races. I am excellent at training and weak at racing 😢😢😢
I’d focus on building a bigger zone 2 base in training. This will mean you’re not working as hard to keep up with the bunch in races and will be a lot fresher towards the end. A lot of people think racing is only about the really hard efforts, but it’s actually more about staying as fresh as possible for as long as possible. So strengthening your zones 2 and 3 in training (long intervals) will help your endurance, and will mean when it’s time to do the higher intensities you’re starting from a position of less fatigue.

You definitely need to be careful riding during fasted periods..it’s very easy to run low and completely exhaust yourself. If you are able to ride during the evening indoors, or ride before sunrise after eating, this is best. If you are riding many hours after last eating, only ride very easy.
do most 3/4 tights actually stay at that right below calf level while riding? i had one pair and they would always ride up the calf and bunch kinda behind the knee
The Attaquer ones have been great for me, but I can definitely see that being a problem for 3/4 tights without a proper gripper on the calf. Good quality full length tights definitely offer a better solution here, but for warm winter or spring riding I often find they’re just a touch too warm and love the 3/4 solution for those times.

@@tristantakevideo in the north the coldest was something like -47.5C this winter. I don't think that we had even -30C. I live on the south coast in Helsinki.
