Explore what we know- and still don’t know- about puberty and its effects on the body and brain.
--
While we often talk about puberty’s effect on the body, what gets overlooked are the fascinating changes that happen in the brain. Puberty, in fact, begins in the brain, and lasts as long as five years. And during this extended process, the brain undergoes its own transformation, thanks to estrogen and testosterone. Shannon Odell details what we know- and still don’t know- about puberty.
Lesson by Shannon Odell, directed by Biljana Labović.

I am getting a psychologist next month beacause i want my life to get better but I don't know to myself i have been feeling like this ever since my body and my thinking changed i have always been shy and not good at socialising. As a young teen, I appreciate when people post informational videos about ourselves to help us understand more about what were going through. I struggle alot understanding what happens in my brain, and i feel some sort of guilt for not knowing why I am like this. But nobody ever tells us that it's a part of growing and maturing, and its ok to look, feel, and act specific ways during our teen years.
@AkshayKumarX
@AkshayKumarX Год назад
Remember not to beat yourself up too much for knowing exactly about how your brain sometimes actively works against you and still not being able to do anything about it. Lots of people suffer from all kinds mental disorders, some more severely than others. Most of the world is still backwards towards being understanding and dealing with mental disabilities in a healthy manner. Quite a lot of people in your life won't be able to help you during times of distress, they won't be as understanding of your difficulties in life because they will likely be going through hardships in their own life with nobody helping them. You're also going to make a lot of mistakes too, you will not be able to help everyone, keep in touch with all your friends who might be troubled like you. Keep close to good teachers, healthy minded adults and share your issues with them instead of your peers to get better help, remember that young minds are rarely ever in a healthy state, advice your friends to do the same. 25 years of age is a good milestone in life generally, when a person's mind matures and they've most probably learnt how to deal with illness, loss, addictions, depression, etc. You didn't ask and I'm writing this more for myself than for you or anyone else reading this. Made the biggest mistake in my life that I am unable to take back. Minor ocd, perfectionism, sever adhd, depression, executive dysfunction. All these issues I've found that I've been living with in my life but never managed to do anything about them being the smart and intelligent person I thought I once was. It only hurts more being better than most people at an early age, not in intelligence alone but rather in empathy, understanding, mental strength and then failing hard because of things out of your control in life. Don't be afraid to wear your heart on your sleever unlike most people you're going to meet. Read good books, always value education, participate in healthy discussions, start earning money and work experience as soon as you can, even if you're 13. Help yourself first and then move onto helping others in this life.

I do wish that psychology and mental health was focused on so much more in middle and high schools. There are still things I'm learning in my mid to late 20s about what changes I went through at that point in life. Sure we'll always be learning new things, but it'd be so nice to be able to focus on something when it's a current part of your life.

I swear, puberty has done nothing to me. So many people talk about how horrible it is, and how different they all feel, but honestly I feel no different. The whole hormones thing, I don’t think I’ve ever noticed before. I feel the same way I did when I was 12. Did I miss out on the whole “universal experience” everyone else seems to have gotten?
@rolandxb3581
@rolandxb3581 Год назад
Good question. Horrible is a judgment, but it's definitely supposed to feel different. How old are you? Some people have very high emotional stability and don't experience as much negative emotions. People with autism also have different experiences, as do asexual people. A lot of variety and for some people puberty is pretty mild. I do think for most people it is a very intense period of change but that doesn't mean it has to be like that for everyone.

As someone who is currently going through puberty. It sucks. And even though I got used to the Idea that this is just how everyone’s body functions, I still feel as if my problems are powered from a bigger outside source. I do think that puberty adds a little spice however. I find myself having a lot of fun being just…happy. Those rare moments just hit me harder because my brain is actively searching for that feeling. I think of puberty as a test. Our brain is making life seem harder, those who manage to take ahold of the strong emotions felt during this fase have passed the test, but on the opposite, those who live in the hatred fed by our brains and those who loose their grasp of humanity to an illusion are thought a valuable lesson. Life isn’t always how it seems.

@nishabeniwal4360
@nishabeniwal4360 Год назад
It's also the fact that as you grow each year becomes a smaller fraction of your life. For example a year for a kid who's 5 would only be 1/5th of their entire life but a year for someone who's 20 would be 1/20 th part of their life.

@@hassanbirbir6363 when you compare fractions 1/5 is definitely bigger than 1/20 right? Most of what was said in this video I appear to be experiencing the second time around rather than the first. The first time around I did notice differences in emotions, but far more so the second time. I also think only having to deal with work, and not school really helps with being able to form an identity and build social connections. Neither of which became well developed in the first puberty.

Maybe people around you teach you puberty is something bad or negative, but we must remain that it's part of the human cycle, and it's a great opportunity to determine "who are you" in many fields. Puberty is the opportunity to learn what you want for your future and how to deal with people that are older and younger than you, it could be hard to feel alone but once it happens never comes back.

I used to think that being a teenager would be fun, because I thought I would be able to live my life to the fullest, be free, be beautiful, be happy with my youth, study well, do a lot of sports, extracurricular activities and having a healthy body, good society, everything will be like a dream... but no, things are not like what I thought when I watched high school musicals and saw my brother going to school. Age 12-16 is the worst, I hate thinking too much, crying, no friends, lost, unhappy, tired, trouble with friends, being bullied, bad grades, bad teachers... really? Now I feel bad, I failed high school and have to retake the exam. There's not even sports, gym time is boring when everyone in my class is lazy and not serious, the teacher doesn't care, everyone else is all gathered to talk, everyone just focuses on grades numbers and envy others, horrible. No one told me how horrible middle school was. And the phone too, all just glued to the phone, forgetting about life, I wish I could go back to my childhood. Even people only care about their goals, I know that's good but jokingly people are too concerned with the future, losing time in their youth. For me youth is really about being goal-focused in a healthy way and not forgetting to take care of yourself at home and at school. I prefer people to be sociable like in the 1990s-2016s. Although I was born in 2007 :]]]

It does. I’m AuDHD (autistic and ADHDer) Let me put it this way….imagine the emotional and mental struggles of puberty but instead of just during puberty….it’s your whole entire life and it never ends. You can manage it with some techniques (I haven’t found anything that works though) but it NEVER ends. I have a mood swing (or 3 or 4) every single day and have since I was 5 years old. I’m 25 now and every day is just random intense panic, happiness, sadness, confusion, brain fog, and I cannot make a non impulsive decision no matter how much I try. But on the bright side, I’m one of the most creative people anyone’s ever met so the Autism and ADHD does have some benefits. It makes sense since there’s a strong correlation between strong emotions and creativity.
