The allowance of Hooker's development as a non-starter may make him a better QB in the long run. Mahomes spent a year on the bench at KC. And Aaron Rodgers spent 2 or 3 years backing up Fauvre before he became the full time starter. Learning the NFL ropes at a more deliberate pace may be just what the doctor ordered for HH.

It truly would be tough to see Hooker flourish elsewhere. Especially if the ultimate prize doesn’t happen with Goff.

You are not wrong here. Cap looks good next year but they are going to have to make some tough decisions to make this work after next year especially. They are betting on themselves continuing to hit in the draft. There will be cap casualties but the hope is they continue to fill with young talent. We shall see! Give us a Super Bowl in the next 2 years and all of this is GRAVY!

Agreed. If he proves to be everything in the backup role then he either takes over for Goff or has HUGE value!

The issue is contract cost. As a third round pick hooker has a 4 year contract. He's already in 1 year. Goff has this year plus 4 more. And remember hooker is 26. Hookers contract will be up when Goff has 2 more years under contract. Green Bay at least had the 5th year option to leverage and get love to a one year contract for his 5th year and save green bay some money. So love sat 4 years and is 25. Hooker would sit 6 years and be 30 if Goff plays the whole contract

Ideally I agree this is best case scenario. Build him to add value!

Also, Hooker may be forced into regular season duty because of an injury to Goff. And if he impresses there, his value on the trading market will vastly improve. But the Lions keeping Hooker, if he develops into a starter type of QB, particularly given how many of them at this position go down every season to injury, may make the most sense.

I like the idea of him being out in the right spot but he still has to prove the talent correlates to the NFL.

That pedigree certainly tends to lead to athletic success. I am just not sure he will get enough of a chance here with Goff now being extended. It's not a bad problem to have and I am hoping they get the best out of him for the Lions sake and his own!

Heard rumblings of this a few weeks ago. Not sure if the Lions will trade him. Word from camp is he still needs seasoning.

If he truly is the real deal I think the Lions have to find a way to showcase that. If they do that than they can decide if he is worth keping around or trading for bigger value. Right now his value is as low as it could be!

@johnnygazsports Goff has been extended, and they have Hooker for three more years... right , right. The lions have not had any kind of soild backup QB since Shawn Hill.. This is what good GMs do... top quality QB and solid backup with top ten O-line. So, what is there to question?

Sounds like you do not believe Goff can win a Super Bowl. That's okay, yet to be seen. The Lions clearly feel differently with the HUGE deal. I agree they need to keep HH and cultivate him into the backup or worst case if Goff truly regresses or gets hurt they still have the option. They will have to make the tough decision in 3 years unless Goff wins them the BIG one!

@@johnnygazsports When Goff wins a SB then I'll believe it but I'm looking at the totality of the division and the league in general. Pure pocket QBs are a thing of the past. Detroit is taking a huge risk by bucking the trend of the mobile QB not to be confused with a Running QB. Mobile meaning just being able to move to either keep defenses off balance, make throws off platform, or at least be mobile in the pocket to extend plays a little longer for WRs to get open. Love the Lions it doesn't mean I have to agree with every contract or like every player. Goff to me is good not great QB and I see the limitations in his game that could cost Detroit ultimately. Goff is atrocious under pressure (not against the blitz to different things) and he is very inefficient when he has to move off his spot. He will not many plays off of platform and that's the difference in the game sometimes. Goff had the better statistical game in the NFCC but Purdy made all the plays that needed to be made in that game. Goff didn't. Blame the defense or the drops but if Goff doesn't leave 2 TDs on the board (one to La Porta and the other to Gibbs in the end zone) or maybe convert on 3rd down instead of having to go for it on 4th down then the story maybe different. He missed those plays because of pressure and having to move off his spot. It wasn't like the 49ers D was playing all that well. Which no one seems to remember. It was a shoot out in the second half and Goff didn't answer. In my opinion. So I like the idea of Hooker with all his tools behind an elite line. Most mobile QBs don't have this type of line around them to excel. Hooker is just a more talent QB but Goff has proven he can win and until that changes people will side with Goff even if there's clear evidence that shows this may not be the best longterm investment.

Sir was their anything I said about Goff skills that were untrue? Was there anything I said about the division or the league trend going against the Lions choice of QB? Not at all! I think they use him over the next several (he signed for 4) seasons to add to the offense and ultimately add value to Hendon. They can then decide if he is the man or if they want to trade him.

I guess the ultimate question is if Hendon Hooker is just a running QB or a full package QB more like Mahomes. I am not saying he can be Mahomes but more of a mobile QB than a running QB.

Yeah he is not progressing as quickly as most expected but it’s still legit his rookie season and he should be given much more time.

That was an option the Lions have but I go on to say that I would NOT pursue this option as he has no real value at this point and I believe HH can still be something for the Lions. I gave over 4 options and that just happened to be the first one I went over. not my ideal scenario at all.
