In today's video, I look at two different types of spreaders and discuss the pros and cons of both! If you enjoyed today's video or found it useful, consider subscribing! Instagram: novicegardeneryt novicegarde...
Thanks for the tests and the info. I've just started renovating my back garden after watching some of your older videos and using them as a reference. Currently I'm trying to lift and sift all the decorative stones out of the earth that were just laid on top to make the garden appear level by the previous owner. It's some job but getting there. After that I'll be copying your video with the wooden edging which will give me a frame to create a level area. Hopefully by the end of summer I'll be in a position to put down the turf. It's slow and steady work with my dodgy back but my time is free and it's good exercise.
Sounds like it's going to work out great. It's surprising sometimes how long it takes doing those kinds of jobs! Especially the decorative stones job - much more faff than you first realise! Hope all goes well with it.
Worth buying a strimmer - those long grasses look awful by the fence. The battery Flymo strimmers with a rotating head are terrific, not crazily expensive either. 👍
Got a Bosch one in the garage. I keep meaning to sort it. To be honest, main reason I haven’t is because it’s been blocking the bark getting onto the grass! Got a plan to replace the bark with a few shrubs to give it more character rather than it just being a metal fence
What fertiliser do you use? Do you have a high end one or more just something like miracle gro? I've just renovated my front garden but don't want to have to spend loads on a fertilser but atbthe same time, I don't want a cheap one
I used A1 Lawn stuff in this video. It's what I've used on the rye grass for the past few years. I've started using True Grass on the back lawns, they're bent/fescue. Using both in tandem this year to get an idea of how they both work in similar conditions. Both are fairly reasonable in terms of price. You're looking at about £15 - £32ish I think. But depending on the size of lawn, it will last you ages!
How often are you fertilizing your newly sown lawn? I have been using low nitrogen 5-6% twice so far. I'm not sure on whether to use summer fertiliser this year. its mostly fescue plus some bent but care must be taken so it doesnt grow itself to death. I'm almost thinking of using a winter fertliser instead . Applying a summer at a lower rate is too difficult as it comes out too quickly to get a good distribution through multiple passes .
I've gone on 3 times now. Just giving it a good boost until it's matured and then I'll pull back on the frequency. With so many new plants, it's tricky to get the balance right. I think you'll be ok at this early stage with fertilising heavily at this stage. Can always thin the sward in autumn or next spring if needed.
@@NoviceGardener I overseeded the communal area that joins on from mine with fescue bent and that is incredibly dense. It wasnt under a germinatiom sheet for 3 weeks so its ahead of mine by a week or two. Other than colour its as dense as it wants to get. i used pre seed twice on that to keep the green colour. I was thinking of every 2-3 weeks like you with a low nitrogen feed. The one you have been using seems pretty good to use all year. It's low nitrgen but also has other benefits other than top growth. less more often is safer and doesnt create a surge in growth that is detrimental to fine dense grasses as you end up with thatch and a lack of light to the grass as it gets too thick. I made that mistake last year.
