What should you do about the WAVES New Business Model?
In case you haven’t left your studio in a couple of weeks, there’s BIG news…
Waves has transitioned to a subscription-only model for their plugins.
This has a lot of people very upset, and I’ve been getting quite a few messages about.
Today, I want to share my thoughts, as well as a plugin tip that will make you “subscription proof” so you never have to worry about losing access to the effects you need.
Now it’s your turn! Leave me a comment below and let me know what you think and what you plan to do about this change to the Waves business model.

This is true, Dom. If one knows what the plugin is doing, there is a way to get it without Waves. That said, some Waves plugins, like RBass, Torque, RVox, Clarity VX, NS-1 will not necessarily be easy. Vintage gear models, no problem. Just shake a tree, most of the competitors sound better than Waves anyways when it comes to this.

I've used Waves since they started but really cut back since their odious update plan. Now this is the final straw as my Waves plugs now have built in obsolescence. Fortunately I only had a couple of their plugs [A reverb and a dynamic EQ]. I use a desktop as a main computer but do some remote stuff on a laptop. I stopped using them a couple years ago after transferring the licenses back and forth too often with their ridiculous, clunky, annoying Waves Central method. I think they need to seriously make it more flexible if they want to be subscription only. e/g maybe a mode that's 100bucks / year but gives you 20 plugins of your choice on top of the standard set. you can now only use cla 2a with the ultimate bundle. I would obviously switch to T-Racks then before eating my money.
@tosvus

@@virtuallifeform Waves isn't Adobe though. Adobe actually have some software that is very hard to replace. Waves, not so much. Heck, even Adobe is slowly losing customers as alternatives are starting to pop up. That said, Waves is so arrogant that they may not turn back. I predict they will lose 90% of their users, but maybe that is ok for them if they make a ton on each customer that stays.

Luckily as a hobbyist, I have never released anything so I don't have to worry about keeping a working project for possible future edits. The Waves plugins I do have can easily be replaced, so for me this is just a way to kick all of it out at the earliest convenience, i.e. when they stop working. My hope is that other music software companies take notice of the backlash to Waves, so we don't end up with companies like Native Instruments or others trying to go subscription only as well.

I have to say that for a company to change its business model after you have purchased their products in this way, is like a dealership for cars saying oh yeah by the way you don't own the car anymore you have to lease it from us. Most people don't work full time in a studio mixing all day. Subscription model works with people who record a band or song every year or so and only need access for a month or so. I agree however that both models should be available.
@svenisaksson3970
@svenisaksson3970 Год назад
I always check three things, when deciding to buy any plug-in (3 & 4 isfor any software): 1) Is it available as a vst3? 2) Is it Apple Silicon native? 3) Is it a perpetual license? If it fails on any of these points, it bye-bye. There's the door! As a matter of fact. If Steinberg were to be stupid enough to only rent Cubase (that I've been using fot 33 years), that's the only thing that could make me abandon it. I guess I won't have to tell you which body part I'd show Waves.

Thanks for another great video, Chris. I can understand the reasoning behind Waves going with a subscription model in that it makes a lot of things much easier for them. But here's why I think this is a big mistake for Waves. They have left out the needs of their current owners. As a current owner of many Waves plugins, I may want to purchase another if they come out with something new. But, the way they implemented this, by giving no credit to current owners, if I wanted a new Waves plugin, I would have to REPAY, via a subscription, for all the ones I already own. Of course, one of the the main advantages of a subscription model is that your plugins are always up to date. But so far, it seems that updates for Waves plugins on a PC have not been necessary. I am running several v10 plugins on Cubase Pro 12 and Windows 10. I have also read of people who are running v9 Waves plugins on this same configuration. Of course this may change when Steinberg drops support for VST2. Having said that, for Mac users who may need to update more often, this could probably save them a lot of money and make living with Waves plugins much easier.

As usual Chris you’re right on the money. This year will be my third with Slate. That’s a reasonable investment. I like the Slate stuff. But I’ve passed on the UADx and Waves; for reasons you’ve expressed so well. What do I need to mix? EQ. Compression. Saturation. Noise. As a drummer (like you) I’ve always thought that your sound was in your hands. Maybe for mix engineers your sound is in your head. All the best to everyone on the sound journey.

I remember when Adobe did this, and my answer is the same: "No." I still use my perpetual licences of PS CS6 and Lr 5 and will not *ever* switch to their "Creative Cloud." I was skeptical when Kiloheartz did their subscription plan, but it's a "rent-to-own" model which makes more sense (to me).

Good for you Chris. For me there are plugins that I love for the sound and would really hate having to find alternatives. I have a waves server and am happy with it, at least until the plugins won't work anymore. Native hit me hard when Cubase went 64 bit and black listed them day 1. Native just moved forward, never looked back and to this day I kick myself when investing in a Native instrument. But I think that waves did the same thing just without me. But at the same time weren't many of us doing it anyway with their maintenance update program? Now it's just forced on us loyal users

I'd be really unhappy if I'd bought more particularly if it had be recently. After the Alchemy thing and the near miss with Bitwig and having a few plugins stop working for one reason or another (like Emulator X, PPG stuff) your advice resonates, not that it doesn't hurt at the time.

It is imperative to align with the interests of the public, as the current actions of WAVEs are unjustifiable. The purchase of bundles should not necessitate monthly payments, particularly for plug-ins that are relatively low maintenance for a corporation. This approach by Waves appears to have an insatiable thirst for profit, plain and simple. While there are many alternatives available, as a company, you have the right to make decisions that suit your best interests just as consumers have the right to make their own choices. Nonetheless, we need not wait for the outcome to act. By uniting now, we can strive towards an outcome that benefits both Waves and the consumers. Let us work together to achieve a mutually beneficial solution. Just as you balance the mix, lets balance this! Just my $0.02 PS, you have a great platform, keep doing the great works

I am at the bad end of the spectrum where it can be weeks before I’m able to get back in so it’s simply a waste of subscription money. I chose a one-off fee drum teaching course rather than Drumeo subscription for the same reason, along with all your courses that I refer back to when needed but would have well unsubscribed by now. Waves will have to rely on pro studios and I imagine many of them won’t have endless profits and at some stage will decide to cut back expenses and cancel. Let’s hope waves add purchase options like you say.

It's about knowing how to use the tools you have, your experience and creativity. To many subscription models in the marketplace in general. This model only makes sense for some offerings. I think waves will loose business.

Very clear headed thinking on this man! If Waves stuff had never existed, we'd all be using something else right? There's enough choice out there to get the job done if you have the skill. Glad you left the old vids up. No sense in being butthurt childish about it lol. Cheers

This is indeed the same! Adobe and Waves just want to work with professionals who can afford to spend hundreds of dollars each year to use their stuff. They want to get rid of me, I only buy when a plugin is less than 30 dollars. Oh well.

Good advice in this video. And when company focus shifts from making good products to "how can we squeeze the most out of our customers", - like it seems Waves have been doing for a while now, - I think it's time to look somewhere else

I have a bunch of waves plugins, I had to stop and think back and realize that at some point I was able to do this without any Waves plugins. I only started amassing them when they went on sale. I'll miss the Abbey Roads plates though. SOUNDTOYS, DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT!!!

Well I don't agree with all subs that we have to use nowadays. Yesterday i saw an item on tv that car manufacturers nowadays push subscriptions on options... That are installed on the car and the subscription is to turn them on via software.

Yeah. I'm going to go down the NO route. I've gone all the way through Mercury with them. Time to walk away and keep my money in my pocket or go with someone like Plugin Boutique or Plugin Alliance. I purged them completely from all my computers.

They have just capitulated! Dear Waves community, My name is Meir Shashoua, and I’m the CTO and Co-Founder of Waves Audio. Over the past few days, many of you have expressed concerns about our decision to discontinue perpetual plugin licenses and our move to an exclusive plugin subscription model. I would like to start by apologizing for the frustration we have caused many of you, our loyal customers. We understand that our move was sudden and disruptive, and did not sufficiently take into consideration your needs, wishes, and preferences. We are genuinely sorry for the distress it has caused. After respectfully listening to your concerns, I want to share with you that we are bringing back the perpetual plugin license model, side-by-side with the new subscriptions. You will again be able to get plugins as perpetual licenses, just as before. In addition, those of you who already own perpetual licenses will once again be able to update your plugins and receive a second license via the Waves Update Plan-again, just as before. This option, too, will be available alongside and independently of the subscription program. We are currently putting all our efforts into making perpetual licenses available to you again, as quickly as possible. In the meantime, you can keep up-to-date on this news page, where we will post the latest updates on perpetual license availability. I would like you to know that we are committed to you, our users. We listened to your feedback, and we will continue to listen to you. Waves is a company filled with users and creators, just like you, and we are all as passionate about the products as you are. With this in mind, we will strive to find the way to make things right by you, and hopefully regain your trust. Thank you for your feedback and continued support-I wish you all the best, Meir Shashoua CTO and Co-Founder, Waves Audio

I purchased a few plugins until I realised you had to purchase an upgrade plan. I haven’t bought anything since and recommended that all my producer friends avoid like the plague. Really unfortunate as they produce some decent stuff.

Yeah, I’ve been thinking even before the waves thing that I’m also done upgrading cubase . I’m on the current version but each new version is like bla bla to me…so when cubase 13,14,15,16,17,18,19,20,21 etc etc comes out I’m like whatever….I’m not even making money doing this anyways…it’s just for fun.

The problem with redundancies and backs ups etc., is they are time consuming. If I have a plug-in I use all the time go off-line, I have to spend time researching and demoing till I can replace it. Seems at least a good argument for stock plugins. Though with pro tools going sub model, who knows, maybe cubase will too someday.

I quit Waves like two or three years ago. Got tired of the dumb upgrade model. Found replacements for everything Waves offered (mostly by switching to T-RackS 5 and some of native instruments plugins - like Replika). So I’m not surprised they went subscription mode, because their upgrade model was already a sub model in disguise. I’m glad everyone else can now see what Waves is: a greedy company that doesn’t care about producers and composers, or engineers. They just want to make as much money as possible. Steer clear of these guys and let’s get them out of business altogether, as warning to any other companies that try to go this route. Or else we’re going to have the equivalent of Adobe in the music business: companies so big that they can force us to subscribe.

That's a bit fatalistic. There's no way in hell I will spend $300 a month to use plugins from 5 different companies I ve already paid for. In fact, if every company follows this method I can see a pretty swift return to hardware

What do you need to mix? A channel strip (Gain, Filters, Compressor, Expander, EQ), De-esser or dynamic EQ. Distortion/Saturation, Delay, Reverb. Maybe pitch correction. And some other Plug-Ins on the Master Bus. Those effects are provided by so many Plug In manufacturers. What bugs me is that I bought the right to use these plug-ins and with such a move they restrict my options to use them in the future. I hope somebody will take legal steps against WAVES to protect the ownership rights of their customers.
