This is the second part of our exploration of what skills you need to learn in order to become an illustrator. If you missed EP3, be sure to check that out first to get the full list. What are the things you need to learn, and in what order? This is one of the biggest and most confounding questions for beginners. While there is no one-size-fits-all path, there are definitely some basics everyone needs as their foundation. I will tell you what I I think the most important things to learn are at first, and give you a sense of what learning these might look like. By the end of this episode, you will have a clearer picture of where to focus your efforts in the first year or so of your illustration education.

Thank you for making these videos. In all honesty I am scared and worried about my path. I am 25yo and don't know if I will ever be able to go to art school, I would love to do illustrations for children's books and middle grade. Right now my art is no where near commercial level, and I really do fear that I missed out by not being able to go to university for art. I know 25 is never too late to start something new, but the fear of failure feels crippling at times. What if I spend all this time trying to achieve a dream that was never meant to be? How can I be sure that hard work will actually get me anywhere? It's hard when you have no choice but to be self taught, and the hurdles just keep getting taller for illustrators.

I hear you! I had the exact same crisis feeling at your age. There is so much uncertainty. All you can do is know what you want and do everything in your reach to get there. At the same time, know that things always take more time than you expect. Know that you can only take smaller steps like take a class or complete a project. One thing at a time, and the picture builds up slowly and in ways you can’t see from your current perspective. Know what you want, and just pursue it in any way you can. Grow where you’re planted.

Thanks for another great video. I am trying to catch up! I am not sure whether you can put this playlist in order of when the videos were released? I’ve had a bit of a time figuring out which video to watch next. Thanks for all you do!!

Thank you, Nicki! My Thoughts on Illustration playlist is here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PWWN4_ZLM44.html - or you can listen on Spotify/wherever you listen to podcasts (and it's ad free!).

This is one of the best videos so far. Initially, I was afraid that I couldn't go to an illustration program at my age and I would never make it. By going through the curriculum taught at Sheridan and the art education recommended in this video, I came up with a full list of skills required to become a conceptual illustrator. With the help of this video, I was able to list out the gaps in my education and a studying system to fill them. I feel that a study group can foster the education of conceptual illustration and I am willing to initiate it. Let me know your thoughts and thanks to Tom for this two-part series.

the only annoying thing in this video is the amount of Ads interrupting while listening. Absolutely annoying. I was about to gave up watching the video so many times because of that.

Hi Stefania, I'm very sorry to hear how many ads are popping up while listening to this video! I'll look at my adsense settings and see if I can make some changes. How many ad breaks do you think came up while listening? If you prefer an ad free experience, you can always listen to this as a podcast! tomfroese.com/podcast Thank you for the feedback!

@@TomFroese Hi Tom! I don't remember how many Ads were as I watched the video in the morning. Maybe ten or more. Probably the best way to listen to these kind of videos is not on youtube but on the podcast. I'll try that. Btw thank you for all the advice and information you give with these videos!

Hi Mr. Tom Froese! Thanks so much for this video and for your kind response! Very much appreciated 🙏🏼. Such full of valuable content that I took Notes and now I don't know where to start commenting haha! From the fundamental learnings to the supplemental resources, this can get me busy 😁. Thanks too for additionally clarifying between Design and Illustration and that those who are more inclined to illustrate must not be intimidated with Design by taking Design classes specifically for Illustrators to gain some confidence. So appreciative of your approach to your podcast. Once again God bless you & your channels✨!

Hello Tom, hope you are well. As always, great podcast! I wish I found this type of content when I started to pursue illustration. I'm turning 28 this month and reaching 3 years as a freelance illustrator. Is really crazy that in those 3 years I got to the same list of what to learn, the one I struggled the most with was writing. Since English is not my first language, I had to take a lot of classes haha Anyways, one other skill I wish I started studying earlier is financial education. Especially focusing on the creative field. Looking forward to your next podcast.

Hi @BIBI, thank you so much! Having some business/financial education would also be amazing to have as part of our illustration education. I agree!

Good to hear you talk about the importance of art history! I'm so glad I took up art history at my university, it was a very good introduction and it's now my favourite subject to read about and learn in my own time. Learning about art history puts everything into perspective for me in terms of art 'style' and meaning. I'm so glad I took that subject.

You brought a totally different perspective to my journey. I started as a computer science person, worked many years, still do. However, the past several years, I had this pull to a more creative endeavor. I plummeted right down to the basics of creating (non-competitive) art. That is for the moment I am working with paper, do stupid stuff like creating cards that I probably will change from to a more of a creative style, yes watercolors and silly marker pens, cutting things and jumping from one material to another. It is giving me the hands-on from being totally computerized, rarely printing ever anything, to now... I feel guilty for using paper. I was expecting a hands-on from your videos and I found your story to be intriguing, for its similarity on how I started. I find your story to be a huge step towards a direction I am still a little unclear about. Thank you very much for getting out there, like seriously, I wouldn't have the patience to listen to an illustrator / artist's story, but I learned quite a bit along the way. That is the lack of confidence that comes with this new journey. Susan Doyle, wow... fellow Torontonian here (waves).
