it's really easy if there is a consumption of 6 amps, for example you need to use a fuse of 7 amps etc. to find the ampere consumption you divide watts by volts and you get amps

Thanks for this video. Finally someone who knows what they are talking about ! I have a newer 1500-watt inverter, which I had been using fine for months. I accidentally shorted it out. Opened it. Found 4 x 30a fuses in there. I saw the first in line was blown. So... easy. I replaced it. But I didn't have a 30a large blade, so I replaced with a 40a large blade. No problem, it is a little bigger so won't blow as fast as a 30, but still small enough that it will blow if it needs to. BUT... it blew! right away. With only about 650 watts device on it. Put in another 40a, which also blew. Put in another 40 and using the inverter now for only charging small, low amp devices while I figure this out, which seems to be working fine, but waste of a huge inverter like this. Is something else wrong inside there that the short caused and that is why it keeps blowing? Or is the 40a blowing where a new 30a would not?? It seems the 40a would blow LAST instead of first, inline with all the other 30s... Mmmmm

@stco2426
@stco2426 7 месяцев назад
I've read the fuse margin to be 1.25x then pick the next size up. So, 5.92A X 1.25 = 7.4A, so 7.5A is fine. It might be you skip to the slightly bigger fuse than just enough but it should cope with spikes etc a bit better than just the next one up. It's better to err up just a fraction on the wiring anyway, especially on a longer run or if marginal and the fuse is there to protect the wiring, I think.

If you use 12 volts instead of 13.5, you get 6.666666 amps. You should probably use that measurement because it will give you higher amperage. Therefore, it may require, in some instances, larger wire/fuses

What wire is best to use for a 12v fuel pump?
@WiringRescue

It depends how many amps the pump draws through the circuit. The bigger the pump, the more amperage it draws, and the larger the wire you’ll need.

You would have to do your measurements based on the 16 gauge wire, because it’s the smallest in the circuit. 1.14 amps is not much though, if you look at the chart I have linked in the video description, you can see how many amps a 16 gauge can handle.

Does it matter if the fuse is installed on the positive or negative lead?
@WiringRescue
@WiringRescue Год назад
Assuming you aren’t building something really weird, the fuse should be in the power wire as close to the battery (or power source) as possible. Here is why - Imagine your car’s chassis is grounded to the battery (as it should be). Any power wire coming off the battery has the potential to touch any part of the chassis and cause a short to ground (Fire!) So if you have a power wiring coming off of your battery, going to an accessory (maybe a fuel pump for example), and then have the fuse in the ground side of the fuel pump circuit instead of the power wire, you will still have this super long power wire coming off your battery that could accidentally ground out in your chassis and cause a fire. If the fuse is on, or super close to, the battery, in the power wire, then the entire circuit is protected.
@chrisgraham2904

In your headlight scenario, the amperage load has determined that you require a 7.5 amp fuse and the minimum wire size required is 16 gauge. If I happen to have a large spool of 14 gauge or 12 gauge wire available, can I use those larger gauge wires in this scenario? If the larger wires are used, does the amperage of the fuse required change? I happen to have 7,000 ft. of 12 gauge copper stranded wire. lol.

That is a LOT of wire! You can use the thicker wire, and the fuse size will stay the same. Good luck with your project! :)

@@WiringRescue Thanks. I've had trouble finding an answer to this question. Everyone just warns against downsizing wire sizes. I know people do "The Big Three" wiring upgrade, that up-sizes the battery/starter/alternator wiring, without changing the fuse specs.

So how do you figure out how much amps is going to be pulled when the item has no description specs.

There are electrical meters that you can use to test actual amperage load. For the meters you can buy at your local auto parts store, they usually have a limit of wither 10 A or 20A that they can test. I'd get the one that tests up to 20A. If it exceeds that, then the other type of meter is a clamp on, loop ammeter. They can go much higher since the current isn't running through the device. Setup the device in a test circuit on your work bench with a car battery, 12V DC power supply or a battery charger as the power source.

I really need an assortment kit of fuses Car companies these days aren't supplying fraction value fuses😑 So its 5A and then direct 10A from the OEM spares shop😑

The variety packs of fuses are very reasonably priced. I want to guess like $10 for like 200 fuses? It’s totally worth having tucked in the back of the tool box. The only bummer is that now car companies are using regular spade fuses, along with mini, so you really need both.

Can i use 12Amps on my 10Amps fuse socket?

Nope, you’ll burn things. You should use the right size wire, fuse holder, and fuse for the load that is being powered. If you overload any part of it, you risk damaging the circuit and possibly even causing a fire.

Great video and easy to follow. I'm kind of a newbie, so I have a question. I know you shouldn't use a higher capacity fuse than what is required for any particular circuit because the increased amperage will get through the fuse and cause wire and component damage on the other side. But can we use a stronger (lower gauge) wire with the correct fuse? Or will that cause damage also. I don't mean an extreme example like using a 1 gauge when only a 16 gauge is required. I mean like using a 12 gauge when only a 16 gauge is required. Thanks. BTW...SUBBED!

You can use a larger than than necessary wire. The downsides are that larger wires are more expensive, harder to route around things, and usually require bigger terminal at the end, which are also more expensive.
