Thanks for the information. I am about to be a cord cutter and I need to do this on my own. so I appreciate your video.

I tried the RCA flat antenna first shown. It picked up 3 channels, I found a cheaper outdoor one that picked up 10 channels in the same spot so I can't agree that it's a good one, though most any indoor antenna likely isn't going to work as well as an outdoor if your more than 25 miles from the stations. Size, height and distance from stations are king. If you're more than 25 or so miles out, then you'll really want height and size.

Replaced a Terk HDTV amplified antenna with the Walltenna. The Walltenna got me many more stations, and I don't have to aim it when I change channels. It works great.

I use the RCA flat amplified antenna they show in the video and I get very good recepition. I use an extension co ax cable to put the antenna in the place I need for best reception.

The key issues in being able to use an antenna is distance to the transmit towers and line of sight to the towers. In my case I am 24 miles from the towers and only marginal line of sight. The antennas in this video will not cut it in this situation. I ended up with a RCA 751 antenna mounted on a small "dish type" mast on the eave of my roof. Also, had to limb up a considerable amount of trees. I also added an antenna amplifier because I have one splitter to go to other tvs in the house. Splitter had to signal loss. Hope this helps.

I made my own Waltenna double bowtie with a piece of left over plexi and the copper tape for probably about 50 cents - it does work well, but it ignores the VHF band.

I fashioned a circular digital antenna using a metal coat hanger, a push-on 300Ω to 75Ω balun ($2 - $3) and a male to male F connector. If you have an old UHF loop, you can save the trouble and just try that. If this doesn't work for you, you're only out $3 bucks or so. First, I cut off the hook part of the hanger including the pigtail portion. That left a triangular shaped wire. Then I straightened out the triangle prior to bending it into a loop. It wasn't geometrically exact. On each end of the loop I bent the tip into a very small loop that would fit the diameter of the machine screw on the 300Ω to 75Ω balun. Next, I took the F connector and screwed it into a fairly long 75Ω cable. I then pushed the other side of the connected into the balun. The cable then was attached to the 75Ω connector on the back of the TV. It's best to use a relatively long cable so there is flexibility to position the loop. Your success may vary, especially if you live in a rural area. However, in my area, I got all but four stations but they were all shopping channels anyway. :)

P.S. As this is not an elegant solution, your family may not want this in the family or living room.

I've noticed that reception changes if the sun is up or down. Also, when the wind is heavy reception drecreases and the direction the antenna is pointed definately affects reception. What is the antenna that will return me to what I had as an uhf/vhf viewer?

I made my own from a do it yourself video. It picks up channels from 100 miles away and my tv collected 164 channels. I spent $7 plus scrap parts to make it.

One of the guys mentioned the new TV's having the over the air TV turner built in. He said it was good. Most of the one's I have had are crap. There are some good TV converter boxes still out there and some are very good. But not all of them. I took a new TV and ran the set up for the antenna. I got 8 channels. Used the same TV again and hooked up a TV converter box. This time got 15 channels. Using the same TV but hooked to a outside antenna. Ran through the TV 23 channels. Used the converter box got 68. Out side antenna seem to always work better. Down side is if a thunder storm pops up. It could take out everything you have. And it has happened to me. So here is a thought for you geeks everything is wireless today. Except over the air TV. Somebody needs to design a out side TV antenna that will transmit it's signal to the TV. Perhaps a antenna with a cable that runs to a amp / transmitter box. So the signal can flow wireless to the TV. If needed a small antenna on the back of the TV. That way if a storm pops up it should not be a problem. I use the surge protectors. But they do not always work.

@DecebalMihailescuG

Tony Lilich That depends on weather, station power and geography. With a good outdoor directional antenna you can commonly get decent reception for up to 45 miles if you don't have obstacles. A low noise preamplifier can add 10-20 miles to that. If the conditions are right, during the night you can get even 100 miles due to tropospheric reflection, but you can't count on that every day.

I tried several indoor antenna's as well as amplified antennas at my house in Brooklyn NY. I am located about 10 miles from the transmission tower and the reception I was getting was very poor. pictures would fade in and out and would be pixelated. I bit the bullet and had an arial antenna installed on my chimney. The difference was night and day. I pulled over 60 channels in glorious HD and even got channels from NJ. The antenna I got was the channel master 3016 ($77 at amazon) and installation was another $300. Work took about 3 hours to complete. I am very happy with the results.

Avi Pharmd I'm 30 miles from Chicagos antennas with buildings and trees blocking line of site to them from my 20 years old rooftop antenna. It takes a heavy summer rain on the trees to disturb my reception. I have a cheapo all band amp to compensate for the splitter loss of feeding the 8 wired jacks in our house. No cable TV ever. It's all moot since we are rapidly converting to IPTV for everything. (Have had VOIP phone for almost 15years)

I live in Balto md , and I live downtown. My apt is on the 1st floor and in the back. I am boxed in by hi rise buildings. . The Rca in this video did not help much, even the amplified model. I received about 8 stations and not very clearly. I tried the August brand magnetic bottom omni directional for $13.00. This pulled in 13 stations . My Rca rabbit ears pulled in the same.. these gave great reception and clear pictures. I was wondering if Walltenna will do any better? I can not receive any Pbs stations, The funny thing is with the antennas I mentioned, The reception is better away from the windows. So far the cheapest are better.. Any suggestions.? Thanks

you can still use a cheaper antenna, the signal will degrade as you route the cable to each tv and splitters. You may want to invest in a good signal amp to run that many tvs from one antenna.

In an electronics store saw an outdoor antenna hanging off the ceiling. Came with an amplifier no longer available. The salesman said the old thing is not for sale. They have others they recommend. Asked him that similar looking antennas that claimed to pick up signals 150mi away were on sale off the Internet got a the answer: the digital signals have slightly different characteristics. The company prob. has updated one for HDTV. Don't the signals broadcast over the same frequencies? Any issue?

thepianoplayer416 Antennas don't care whether the signal is analog or digital, NTSC, ATSC, PAL or Klington, French, Chinese or Arabic. Full power digital broadcast TV in the US is UHF band.

@Bound4Earth
@Bound4Earth 9 лет назад
Donna WhartonBroadcasts are continuous regardless of weather. The myth that satellite goes out when it rains is still very prevalent. Satellite users may experience a slight outage when the rain storm starts or during very high winds, but otherwise can continue to watch television on the smaller dishes. Satellite television does not have these issues when using a normal sized dish. For channels using the antennas in the videos, there will not be a disturbance because they are indoor antennas. Netflix and Amazon Prime are great compliments to an antennae like this. Amazon Prime also includes free shipping on Amazon.com. I would not recommend Hulu because it costs more then Netflix or Amazon Prime, has less content and you have to watch commercials throughout the episodes.

Fucknuts one reason is the fact they have been making antennas for nearly a century. the second reason is that you need no external power. and the third reason is they will replace it if it ever fails no questions asked. besides, none of the demonstrated antennas will pick up signals more than 50 miles or so. channel master is the only company in the us and canada that make external antennas, no matter what the brand name says. RCA, Radio Shack, etc.

DVB-T2 is in process of being developed as a terrestrial transmission system for the UK. However, as a DVB T2 has a limited in bandwidth. DVB-T2's maximal transmission bandwidth is 10 MHz, a mode that could not be used in Canada or anywhere where there are 6 MHz television channels. With an effective bandwidth increase to 12 MHz, 16 MHz, 18 MHz or 24 MHz a better television transmission system can be created. The bandwidth increases must naturally be in multiples of either 6 MHz or 8 MHz.

I see more complaints about people buying these amplified antennas, they live near an antenna farm but expect to also get a farm 50 miles away, duplicating a lot of channels. You see this especially in NYC, the whining. What happens is the local ones drop off and they get the distance ones only. You basically are getting too strong of a signal from the local stations, multiple paths, it’s the same problem of living next door or in the shadow of to an antenna farm. Try removing the amp. These amplified antennas are not designed for the above use. The amplification isn’t for receiving distance channels when they are available local, they are for use when you are at a distance of 40-50 miles, to the nearest farm. Used to live out in the sticks and our stations were 45 miles away. Now I live north of my local farm 24 miles away, across water, an amplified antenna is worst for me because the other farm, I live on a very long peninsula is 50-60 north on the mainland, exactly opposite of each other. I don’t need the amp for the local stations. Rabbit ears? You don’t need the long ears much, all of our stations moved to the UHF band off the old VHF. VHF needs those long arms you see on old roof antennas, UHF uses the really short arms at the other end. So, rabbit ears usually have two antennas, the two long ears for VHF and an enclosed antenna in the center mounted to the base, or a loop wire antenna in the center. You would be better off buying just a cheap $10 enclosed UHF antenna and lose the ears. They do nothing.

Yes, it works,but $35 buys you $5worth of materials plus $2 Chinese labor,packagng and shipping for a 50 year o!d design requiring only cutting rectangles of a non mrpetalic material, and a scissors for cutting copper tape.. An honest American company could build and sell it for less and still make a good profit.

Inches? Feet? What is this? The 1950s? I was born in 1981. I don't know what an inch is intuitively, and it's annoying to have to keep breaking out the conversion formulas. If you're going to give measurements, give them in metric or not at all.
@stclairstclair
@stclairstclair 8 лет назад
+Roxor128 If you don't know what a frigging inch or foot is, well its time for you to move on to a nice euro-trash apartment in Russia, good god. wait...one last thing...do you refer to America as "merica" just asking ;).....Also do you ask for a foot long subway sandwich as a "30.48 centimeter-er with everything?"
@Roxor128
@Roxor128 8 лет назад
+stclairstclair Russia? Nah, that'd be a step down. I'm good here with being able to see kangaroos in the evenings up the hill. I refer to it as "the US" and people from there as Yanks. I have no idea how Subway name their menu here. I can tell you this: It won't be to two decimal places if measuring in centimetres. Nearest integer is good enough for most purposes. You might hear people giving one decimal place if giving a small distance in kilometres and they know it fairly closely (eg 5.2km). Even in millimetres, it's still often to the nearest ten or fifty.

Roxor128 How many horsepower is your car engine? Sorry, Newton-meters.
@Roxor128
@Roxor128 7 лет назад
Newton-metres don't measure power. They measure torque or energy. Power is measured in watts. One watt is one joule per second, or equivalently, one newton-metre per second. As for car engines, I don't know, because I don't own a car and can't drive, so I've never had to look up the specifications. I think they're given in kilowatts, though.

Wow an indoor Omni-directional crap antenna works better without a booster, well if your just figuring this out now, it seems you don't know much about how antennas and boosters work, I came here to educate myself not watch to guys that don't seem to know all that much, maybe I need to add a few videos to my channel.

You boys who are new to tv reception - unless the laws of physics are different on your side of the atlantic - if u have the option, OUTDOORS & HIGHER is better - then GOOD QUALITY CABLE. Not sure what the output power on your towers is like but "set top " aerials /antenneas only for VHF not much use for UHF unless v close to tower/transmitter. Best wishes to you american people from the socialist republic of hampshire ( kidding ) X

These antennas are pure junk and fairy tale marketing. I should know. I built antennas for many years to use on many different frequencies for radio,tv,fm,ham,police and many other frequencies. There is a mathematical formula in wave lengths for 1/4 wave / 5/8 wave /1/2 wave and many others. What a piss poor rip off of people that don't know how to fill there cars up with gas let along any knowledge of electronics. Not everyone is an electronic expert or novice. The antennas being sold on ebay roughly 4 years ago in the beggining of the HDTV craze were some what decent. But today they are as cheap as anything i have ever seen. Pure junk that is not even electrically connected to any of the beams. You got to have a thing called a ground plane people. If the rear of the antenna is just hanging there and not wired to the rear metal back of the spread plane you have no reference to ground for any wave length or frequency to capture. Why are people so un knowledgeable about the most elementary things? Jesus! And yeah this guy knows nothing about electronics or frequencies or what make an antenna work. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A HDTV 4K ANTENNA! It is UHF or VHF Frequencies. Proof right here that if i tell you the martians are here,you are suppose to believe me. Wake up people and go back to school and start all over again!
