As a Transformers fan, IDW has done so much for the franchise. Interpreted characters in new and interesting ways, expanded representation, and wrote amazing stories. And their art direction is always so good.
I agree, the Idw comics are a perfect blend of themes. There are darker moments, but they are balanced out with comedy and lightheartedness. Also, the IDW incarnations are brimming with personality compared to the game counterparts, which hopefully they can change with the next game!!
The issue with IDW, is none of the game cast can develop or grow as a person. No-one's even allowed to be in relationships and half the game cast is butchered. Knuckles can't leave Angel Island, Shadow is a jackass and most of the villains from past games are dead, meaning only the D6, Metal Sonic and Eggman can be used. This severely limits the writing potential, outside of original characters like Tangle and Whisper.

For real though, very insightful, might even convince me to read the comics. Hope this show turns out great
Here's what I think the new Sonic series should include. - Story plot & arcs (similar to the Archie and IDW comics). - Making the characters likeable. - Adding characters from the IDW comics. Like Tangle and Whisper. - New villains (maybe). - Impressive animation and effects. - Epic action scenes. - Memorable music scores. - No segment episodes - Don't make it a all comedy series. - Needs to be a must-watch for fans old and new.
It needs the Freedom Fighters, Amy just doesnt work in Sally's place. She'd be better off being written similar to Bunny Rabbot rather than Sally Acorn. She's already got the giant hammer and everything, she should have more bravado. Like, she could be a less socially awkward Knuckles. That'd be really fun to watch.
@@four-en-tee They had Amy in Sally's place because it made more sense for Amy to be the Resistance Leader than Knuckles. Sally is better than both of them, but the kind-hearted Amy is better choice than the hermit. Either way, yes, bring back the Freedom Fighters.

@@tysteven4918 Penders sues Sega because he claimed they stole his ideas. Which in turn caused Sega to force a reboot and even drove a wedge between Sega using their other properties as references. The Sonic community are spectacular Penders will try to sue the movie studio when the 2nd Sonic is released. Because he’ll sue if it has the slightest resemblance to his work, Archie got the second lawsuit for that reason.
I’m not against the Netflix series following the IDW comics, but I would like something akin to the 2012 TMNT show where it takes the best parts of the Sonic series and creates a definitive experience that anyone could jump in and enjoy.
I'm fine with everything, what I don't want is an IDW adaptation. Don't get me wrong, I love the comics! But those stories have already been told, so why not have something new instead? Something that can get a fanbase of it's own without needing to rely on a pre-existing story. (also I feel like the movie deserves a little more respect than a "lol breastfeeding joke" comment but that's just me)
What we need is a remake on the video games of the original and the storyline of how everything came to be. In the video games from Sonic The Hedgehog(1991) to Sonic Forces(2017) with clever twists that makes it different from the original source material. The Sega Scourge coved the what if scenarios very well.

I’d love to finally see Heroes get adapted since Sonic X didn’t get that far. And honestly an 06 anime/show rewrite would be amazing. But again. Probably never going to happen because Sega just wants to forget everything existed if there was any kind of flak apparently... but an arc for each major game would be nice. Maybe with a brief (ish) backstory covering the genesis games
I understand that,maybe the story can be apart of the games? I can the issue with that but the Idw comics are there own cannon well I understand why they did that (To try and not upset people with having to read comics to get the games) but it makes things more confusing,like how dose it connect to the Sonic universe and is Idw! Sonic his own Sonic? If he’s Modern! Sonic,then why are they a “separate cannon”? I’m thinking if the show was the games aftermath,it would be at lest three (because of the movie) separate main cannons but that can make things more complex and that would add another Sonic,I’m like the idea of multiple Sonics but we have so many Sonics and some we don’t know if they are cannon but what else do we do? Yes the show can have it’s own cannon but that’s FOUR separate cannons,I guess that could work but how? For anyone,following like 4 cannons can get overwhelming,three can be too but at least it’s the games,the comics and the movie,so hopefully that works.
That's the thing, we already have too much versions of Sonic. The fanbase is already splintered as it is. Though I agree with you on not adapting IDW. Maybe adapt the Adventure games since those already feel like arcs of a shonen series.
Ah yes. Sonics roots. Shounen. Sega abandoned that with 06 sadly because of some criticism. Instead of making the next game better. Because it’s too “edgy” so they opt for goofy and kiddish instead. I have serious doubts SEGA would ever allow it at this point

I kinda wish it was traditionally 2D animated - looking something like Rise of the TMNT or Glitch Techs. 3D animated tv shows have a tendency of looking flat and lifeless. I hope they don't fall into that trap.
IDW has definitely been doing a great job when it comes to writing the characters and making some interesting stories with them. And I’m saying this as a really casual fan of the Sonic series. While a part of me hopes for the upcoming Netflix series to adapt some of the IDW stories in some form, I think taking some cues from it would be the better choice at the moment. And maybe get some help from the comic writers too. As a part of me worries about things getting a bit awkward later on due to it being a currently running comic series, which is apparently what’s happening with the One Piece and Naruto anime’s at times. Although maybe they can find a way to make adapting it work. I’ve heard that’s the case with certain other shows that adapt currently running book series. Nice job highlighting both the pros and cons of the comic series.
I heard that the Metal Virus Arc was supposed to be for Archie’s universe. Which would have been more effective since that world had more of an established world.
Since the metal virus arc was an arc that was originally going to be in Archie I wonder if it would’ve felt more impactful since that world had places we knew and cared about compared to idw’s random villages. Ian probably should’ve waited to use the idea like you said.

Im wondering if IDWs financial issues had something to do with this. Ian Flynn may have wanted to get the metal virus arc out of the way in case the comic ended prematurely.
Did a very great job, and gave a pretty good overview of the IDW series. When you mentioned something like the Metal Virus arc going too long, that is something Ian Flynn has been criticized in the past, the pacing of his stories, going back as far as his really long Archie arcs like the Iron Domain and the Shattered World Crisis. Personally I’ve always felt Flynn works better when he has more material to work with, hence thinking each of his sequential work hasn’t been as good as the last, but he no doubt is a master of character writing, and even when the story of an issue is thin he knows the characters in and out and their interactions always bring something to it. Also nice Sonic X comic deep cut lol
Still doesn’t explain the characterization inconsistency going from Forces to IDW. Why was Shadow’s characterization in Forces given the Ok, but IDW was where SEGA decided “Make him as Vegeta as possible”.
ngl I'd simp for an animated version of these comics (same 2D artstyle or the Sonic Cinematic style). It'd be a *lot* of work, but the payoff would be phenomenal!
12:19 Exactly IGN and Gamespot ran the series in the late 2000’s since they were the only few reviewers and they give Sonic and the Secret Rings a higher score than Unleashed and Black Knight, and gave Sonic 4 a higher score than Sonic Generations. And IGN gave Sonic Free Riders a good score FREE RIDERS!!!!

In my opinion, you can't debut Whisper without also putting Mimic in the game. Any time after her first appearence would be just fine to appear solo though.
This was a really great video about the potential of the Netflix show. Personally I'd want it to be in the style of IDW but not a straight adaptation. Ideally I'd want them to take aspects from all continuities of Sonic and it be the ideal Sonic media adaptation. Take Tangle and Whisper from IDW, bring back the Freedom Fighters, add characters from the cartoons like Sonia and Manic (don't have to necessarily be Sonic's siblings), bring in beta characters like Tiara the Manx, there's so much potential you can take from and repurpose into whatever you could want. There's a really great artist that I follow on Deviantart that does just that, they go by JoeAdok and I highly recommend checking them out. Of course that's just wishful thinking on my part but all in all, I just want the show to be enjoyable.
Really, I'm kind of sick of 3D sonic animation by this point, since they reuse assets a lot. I think a 2D animated show would be better direction, since 'Chao in space' and 'Team Sonic Racing Overdrive' looked fantastic, and I really just want more of that. Aaaand 2D animation is tad bit easier.

Hell fucking no. That would turn Sonic cocky, changing from the not-so-cocky Generations Sonic. But the real Sonic we wanted is the responsible Sonic from SA2.
I can't believe all these games are getting TV shows and movies. However, I still can't believe that there hasn't been any rumor of a World of Tanks or SCP streaming/TV show coming out. Active players, huge and respectable fandom, and still is a thing of today. Anyone thought about this before? Just me?
I can't deny either "Archie's Sonic comics" "IDW sonic comics" appeal for a show but perhaps the upcoming netflix show can draw its content from both Archie and Idw. Depends how long the creators want the show to run for, and how much lore from any of the(Archie or IDW) comics and past shows they can use. As well as their own creative spin to make it it's own thing. That being said I for one will keep my eyes open for more info on this new show, loved the animatic by the way your friend does good work.
I might have to check out these comics after hearing some your thoughts on them. I stopped reading the Archie comics and such a long time ago, but really enjoyed them! Like, I genuinely found them to be so interesting with the lore and characters. Plus, I absolutely LOVE science fiction. Nowadays I mainly read Alien and Predator comics lol.
IDW Shadow may realise his mistakes. But he doesn't learn from them. And it's bad enough that he's out of character! And how is he hard to write for? NUTS TO THE MANDATES!!!
I agree with this a lot All the characters and story are told well and made forgotten characters great like jet as told before but I’m here to talk about shadow the hedgehog as I think instead of idw they should use it as a way to not write him and look at the Archie comics as they really got this character right and gave us more to his character and sa2 and others games should also be used overall I think this is great to look off of
You might be right about the world building part, but what I really like about the comics is the connection between areas. For example (Spoilers for the comic) there's a pyramid base that Rouge goes to in one issue. The base is actually is, or at least based on, the pyramid base in SA2. And the cherry on top, it's located in Dusty Desert from Sonic 06. I really love the fact that they're going out of their way to connect these places. Every time we see an area that's like another area between games, we're usually left to think that they're on different sides of the Earth or something. But to actually see that these 2 desert places are in the same place is really promising to me. What if Seaside Hill is actually off the coast of Green Hill? What if White Park is actually a bit to the north of White Acropolis? What if Route 99 is only a few miles away from Station Square? The possibilities of connection are infinite. One could say.... The possibilities are never ending (I had to)
I still remember the one review I watched about the Sonic IDW comics where the guy was complaining that the tone of the comics was too dark to be "for kids" and was praising Ken Penders weirdly enough for writing comparatively tamer stories with his army of original characters that "sueded away from the SEGA status quo" as if it's a good thing.
Looking back, I think the guy was trying to be a "devil's advocate" and voice against the universal hate that Kim Penders receives from Sonic fans. I respect their opinion on that front, but their opinion on the IDW is trash.
I'll always prefer the Archie series, and I have a few criticisms of the IDW series(specifically how they handled Eggman getting back his memory) but I think that the series has improved over time.
Poor Boom Sonic doesn’t know that the Idw and Archie comics have cliffhangers but that’s not he fault. At least the Idw comics are good and I still need to read the Archie comics,I so far have watched a video about them and read the Sonic fighters arc.
1:05 Correction: Mega Man Fully Charged had one premier airing on the main Cartoon Network channel per episode, playing musical timeslots, followed by the occasional reruns on Boomerang. ... So basically it was only released on the Cartoon Network app. (Also its second season was surprisingly independent of whether or not it performed well on Cartoon Network. the story of that is super interesting, in a sad way, and something I recommend looking into.)
All I hope is that this show actually is plot driven instead of Boom/AoStH. We haven’t gotten a decent story in a Sonic show since Sonic X and even that show left something to be desired. Our closest to something like that was the SatAM series and even that is a bit dated nowadays and probably won’t continue because of.... legal issues. At most, I hope this show can act as a sort of spiritual successor to Sonic X since that show had some good ideas that still hold up even if they were executed poorly.
If they did a proper adaptation of the Archie comics, i'd die a happy man. Like, they'd have to take a new route obviously with shit like the dark legion and other shit regarding the Echidnas, but at least bring back faces like the Freedom Fighters, Scourge, what have you.
Sonic Forces should have named the rebels in the game the Freedom Fighters. Don’t tell me it wasn’t a missed opportunity. If Forces can reference “Let’s do it to it”, then they can call the rebel force the Freedom Fighters.
Would love to see shard and cyber metal sonic in the new reboot or even in a new sonic I mean why don't they adapt materials or scenarios from the archie sonic comics cause that would be an awesome thing to watch or play a sonic game that features the running through robotropolis.
