I really don't get why people feel Sonic driving cars needs to be "explained". People seem to think Sonic drives out of necessity, not just for the fun of it. Also, there WAS a full-on reference to Heroes in the first story, when Heavy King proclaimed himself to be a 'Metal Overlord', and then Eggman turns to Metal and tells him to 'not get any ideas' XD
I love this special! Great seeing so many continuity nods, cute character interactions and surprises galore. Out of everything in the special, oddly enough Bark was the major standout. Taking note from his Fighters Megamix profile, he's now much different than his Archie self, now being more akin to his game self as being a kind hearted guy who just so happens to have some bad friends. His friendship with Amy is absolutely adorable and I need more of it. Happy birthday Sonic and Eggman! Here's to 30 more years of kicking the rock!
Well from what I’ve gathered, the classic universe is less of retcon and more following the time travel logic that the time eater scheme created an alternate timeline because of the characters pulled from that point becoming aware of the possible future, more accurately classic egg man now knows which schemes will fail and/or backfire if he tries them himself. Thus, causing him to come up with different schemes. Butterfly effect and all.
That's a much better explanation than the "another dimension" retcon. I initially believed that the timelines split after Sonic Generations. But you took things a step further with Classic Eggman becoming aware of his future schemes failing and him changing up his tactics. Nice work!

As soon as I saw the Tails Doll, I knew it Megabeatman was gonna freak out. In case, he was freaked out by this character it's appearance during the Sonic Archie Comics both Pre-Super Genesis Wave and Post-Super Genesis Wave
The IDW Team went crazy with this comic, and I love it! Hats off to everyone who worked on it. They all put their skills to the true test with 80 pages of enjoyment. The art is as always amazing. Even the covers look amazing. The only nitpick I have is Sonic speaking as he doesn't say a single word in Generations or Forces (but I guess you could say he does speak in CD, but that only if specific stuff is done for example getting a extra life or standing still for 3 minutes). Now we just wait until Free Comic Book Day for another Classic Sonic Issue, and because of that it means I'll have to wait for October to get the "Deluxe Set" (hopefully it won't take long).
Glad Mighty, Ray, Nack/Fang, Bark, and Bean (and a cameo by Fulke Wolf of the Witcarters) made IDW Sonic finally; though I still Sally Acorn and her Freedom Fighters (Bunnie, Anotine, Rotor) still came to IDW Sonic.
Sonic really doesn't have any reasons to get a driver's license. He runs faster than mess vehicles and if he really needed a vehicle he got those extreme gears. It's close to the ground and can technically fly so can avoid both road and air laws Edit. The Extreme Gears don't even use gas it's powered by AIR! It is the perfect vehicle if may be dangerous if it really exists. Imagine falling off a flying skateboard going 250 MPH

I just know that CrystalMaiden77 is going to Hate this Comic once she reviews it, She's going to complain that she Hate the Writers, the Artist, and the References, and that going to take a long time for her to review it.
seasons of chaos. my favorite story out of the bunch, i like how well all the characters are incorporated into the plot by having them collect the chaos emerald, even if the story isn't anything that special, and i love the personalities of almost everyone here, especially knuckles, i like how he's not an idiot, hothead, or hotheaded idiot like he's usually depicted here, and while seeing classic sonic talk is cursed at first, i actually quite like the personality he has here. and by far, the BEST part of this story is the humor! so much to point out here, sonic's "NO!" response to bean, fang casually shooting the emerald out of sonic's hands, sonic's confusion over metal sonic's refusal to fight, metal sonic keeping fang from running away like a cartoon, eggman telling metal 'don't you get any ideas! go attack!" in response to heavy king saying he wants to become a metallic overlord, another knuckles meme face, ect, it's great. the decision to bring back the heavy king is interesting i'll say, him and the rest of the heavies were arguably one of the best additions in mania, and i love how he got distracted by sonic, specifically i felt sonic's dialogue was pretty neat. about the worst aspect of this story in my opinion is amy actually, first off i feel her drawings aren't as consistently good as the rest of the characters, and second, i'm not too fond of her personality here, i feel she's a bit too shy i guess, don't get me wrong, i'd take this over "please marry me sonic!" amy any day, but, there _can_ be a balance ya know, and i don't like how useless she is in this story after joining mighty and ray, especially after i had a discussion with someone and they pointed out how she didn't seem to be _that_ useless at the start of the story, which makes my problem here even worse, i also don't like the dynamic she has with bark, it's just sorta, eh? about the nicest thing i can say about amy in this is that we get more screen time with mighty, who _is_ neat, so, yea. sonic learns to drive. i, unfortunately do not like this story at all, first of all, i don't find the premise of explaining why sonic wants to drive a car to be that great, and this comic literally has, two jokes, "sonic is dumb and knows less about cars than a toddler." and "sonic likes chili-dogs.", i don't find the first joke funny, and i find the second joke BEYOND overused, and unfortunately, that's about it for this comic, so, i didn't get much enjoyment out of it, was more so just waiting for it to end, about the only note-worthy thing here is that the comic features A LOT of references to sonic stuff, some pretty obscure, so, i guess that's one positive i can give these comics. eggman's birthday. my second favorite story here, it's short but sweet.......yea that's it, not much to say other than that.
Sonic could always talk from the very beginning. Can't have that 90's attitude without having the ability to say a few quips. It was generations that decided to take away his voice and personality.
The yellow emerald getting tossed close to Metal Knuckles by Bean's bomb is a good explanation as any though showing Metal Knuckles hiding somewhere in the back ground while the fight was going on probably would've helped fill that plot hole too.
Surprised you didn't mention the call forward to Metal Overlord in Sonic Heroes referenced in the story itself since you made the Heroes comparison. After Heavy King details his plans and intends to rule the planet as its Metal Overlord, Eggman looks at Metal Sonic and tells him not to get any ideas.
I bought this when it came out at the comic store. And I loved it. It really took me back to my childhood and reminded me of the era O grew up with as a kid. So many old characters and callbacks to the old games. This was the best Sonic Comic ever! I loved it.
happy 30th anniversary sonic!!!(hope we get a sega all stars comic from idw at some point,especially with sonic being together with bayonetta in that smt mobile game.:3) love the references to sonic's ride games(police car,the popcorn shop,schoolhouse,early sonic and the space patrol car which make sense with how many references it's writers have done for their works having seen here there be goblin's) and think it's funnier than the dragonball z episode(which compared to sonic can be summed up as "just teach chi chi to fly"). love seeing metal knuckles alongside the hooligans return(especially great to see bean again and bark's cute scenes with amy.) with amy getting some love(pretty much how i'd imagine a mania 2 would go.) along with the fun interactions(actually reminds me of @imbeciletom's silly and cute art of sonic & shantae's characters meeting with holly being the leader of team hooligan/risky boots being a companion to eggman & ray befriending twitch and vinegar.) and thought it was a funny heartwarming reminder it's eggmans birthday as well. for classic sonic they should stick with this as it's a better way of handling it than forcing him into recent games.(do still wish we got a conclusion to megadrive/at least see what it would've looked like.)
The emerald radar could also be a reference to either the OVA, or the emerald radar Tails uses at the start of Sonic Riders. But let's be fair both of those were probably based on DBZ.
I think that the Hooligans are an amalgam of the Archie Sonic Versions and the Original Game Versions of the characters in this comic? Part of their personality I think comes from the Archie Comics (specifically Bean the Dynamite, I seen comic dubs of these characters, he still is crazy as his Archie Comic counterpart, and just like that comics, sonic dislikes bean). Ironically for his game inspiration (from what I looked up) is based off of two duck video game characters (Bin and Pin; Dynamite Dux), but his species is woodpecker, at this point I kind of think he’s a hybrid between the two! The only thing that I’m annoyed about is Nack’s Name! They could’ve at least kept both names, I hope he’s a Wolf/Weasel/Jeroba in this continuity!
Having a NIGHTS Into Dreams reference smack dab at the start of the comic and I was not expecting Sonic's Schoolhouse and Waku Waku Sonic Patrol Car references.

I tired of people believing Forces reckoned Generations. Forces didn't reckon Generations. Classic Sonic in Forces and Mania is from another dimension, that doesn't mean the one from Generations is too. Since no-one knew that the time eater was going to attack in Generations before hand, it means that they didn't experience it. The adventure both Classic Sonic and Modern Sonic went on in Generations must of caused a timeline split creating the timeline or "dimension" we seen in Mania. Classic Sonic in Generations was the past version of sonic before the time eater attack, but as soon as it did he was no longer Modern Sonic's past self. Hopefully I explained it clearly enough. Also, this isn't specifically directed at you, it is directed to the fanbase at large, since this seems to be a pretty common misconception.
No. There is writing inconsistency. Iizuka said Sonic Generations is not canon in 2016. Inconsistencies happen due to multiple writers not on the same page
modern city escape in generations prioves that fang, bean, bark, mighty and ray do exist in the modern universe but are either at large and hiding from the law or just missing
I hope that with the inclusion of Mighty, Ray and Team Hooligan in the IDW Sonic-universe, SEGA may have changed their minds about not having classic characters reappear. I definitely wouldn't mind them or other characters from that era like the Battle Kukku Army returning.
The Tails Doll is really creepy to a lot of people. I mean Megabeatman reviewed the Archie comics, even most of those issues with the Tails Doll in them. Look at his reviews of issues 236, 241, 247, 252, 265, and 267. You'll get the idea. (I know I mentioned six issues at one. I wasn't saying you have to see all of them at once. I'm just letting you know how to get the story.)
That's a looooong story... Let's just say it has something to do with its design, a creepypasta, and a character quirk in Archie Comics inspired *by* said creepypasta.
So while really late this time so do I still want to give my general thoughts on this issue. Most of my comment this time was copied from a discussion I already hate about the issue but I slightly edited it to make it not only work as a standalone comment but also to add in additional thoughts I didn't had at the time including ones I got through watching this review. Seasons of chaos: While its properly the best story in the book is it still not all that great. Sure as the comedy is great, It has tones of references for those that love them and I like how it feels like a game but this is also kind of were the first big issue comes in. As like in the review mentioned did 5 years ago did Archie Sonic publish a Comic called "Sonic Mega Drive" and its sequel "Sonic Mega Drive the next level" which were suppose to get a finishing issue to complete its story but because Archie lost the IP did that never happen. This comic did pretty much the same thing (being a game as a comic) and despite its own issues does it do so many things better that it makes it hard to overlook the problems I'm about to name here. For one Amy. I actually got into quite the heated debate when the preview pages came out and I questioned sonic wanting Amy to help him in a fight as this is Classic Amy a Amy Sonic should not thing very much off (him allowing Amy to just tag along in general at the start was already a stretch) and this it especially bad for 2 reasons beside Classic Sonic Logic. Because additionally for one does it introduce a inconsistency into the story as Amy is shown as more accepted and powerful in the first 5 pages than she is for the rest of the story (especially her being able to launch Sonic with a big heart effect but not being able to do anything about Bark) and for a second because the fact that Classic Sonic should not be okay with Classic Amy being around was something that Sonic Megadrive 5 years ago actually addressed and gave us an explanation why she is now stronger and why Sonic let her tag along. So its not just strange its a direct downgrade from Mega Drive. Pretty much everything about Metal Sonic is also really dumb as in the way the Heavy King took control as Metal Sonic is a unique enough entity that Eggman literally had to salvage and reuse Metal's original main board for Metal Sonic Kai (which this one has to be the original CD unit is ether still on little plant or destroyed for good in Mania) so its highly contrived that he could just hack Metal Like this. And its even worse how there actually get them back by having the Tails Doll that was so far doing a great job staying hidden just randomly show up in Tails and Eggman's faces to give Eggman and Tails the Deus Ex machnia to get his machines back because apparently could Eggman with his massive IQ not build a signal Emitter with more than 1 meter range despite the Heroes leaving brocken Robot that were all remotely hacked by Heavy King laying around by the Dosens. (also speaking about the Tails doll why is it actually doll sized in case people forgot only Archie made the Tails Doll a small spy Robot its game counterpart as another challenge racing Eggman created in Sonic R was always the same height as Tails him self) And for how fun Bark, Bean and Fang are so i'm not a fan of how Ian just expect us to except them as a team since forever as this was never a thing before anywhere outside of his Archie Comics run. And that Eggman put no safety measurements in place against Heavy King betraying him AGAIN after Maina's finally is kind of strange. Than again having this Mania element in it opens quite a few questions anyway like "wasn't it the Phantom Ruby to change the Egg Robo's, wasn't heavy king in the true ending of Mania plus A Okay and nice or does this take place after Mania Adventure OR its this yet another disconnected Post Mania story? And Megabeatman even show me another plot hole I didn't even noted when first reading it with the Yellow Chaos Emerald. characterization All of this properly sound overall harsh on a fun story but this just ones again reeks of editors that aren't doing there job and an author so focused on referencing obscure things and having fun him self to the point of not double checking his own writing. And it's such a down great from an unfinished story written by the same guy 5 years earlier. I feel like I should make it clear that I don't thing its bad. There are a lot of things to love about this story but its for me a death by a thousand cuts as all of its small issues just add up to something to big for me to ignore. Sonic learns to drive: I suppose its an celebration of all things Classic Sonic so I guess having an early Archie, Adventure of Sonic the hedgehog like comedy story makes a fair amount of sense. But its just not really my kind of comedy and so not all that enjoyable to me. The most fun I had was pointing out all of the dozens of references. Like the City Design as well as Sonic's expectation of how car's work comes from Waku Waku Sonic Police car while the little spaceship on the mirror is actually Sonic's space ship from SegaSonic Cosmic Fighter. And boy was the loop section stuffed from Nite having an action figure of the scraped Sonic 1 hand goblins, the Sonic School house to the left or the loop, the SegaSonic Popcorn machine reference to the right of the loop, the posters on the loop it self all referencing things like scraped sonic 1 concept art, the Flicky's from Sonic 3D Blast flying around and so much more. And on the back of the care in one panel can you even find book versions of Sonic Eraser a scraped Arcade game, Tails and the Music maker and Sonic World both Sega Pico games aimed at really really young children (and all make sense to be books as Sonic erasers opening had it shown as a book and both Sega Pico games like call Sega Pico games came bundled like a book with many different pages to interact with). Eggman’s birthday: Being honest here I don't like this story. For one the fact that even Eggman's basic badniks do this is kind of silly. Anything requiring more thought than basic attacks is something that prior to Egg pawn's was always reserved for the Super Badniks like Egg Robo's or Metal Duplicates. There is also the implication that is happens before despite that Eggman canon wise hasn't done anything majorly Evil prior to Sonic 1 which happened like in the same year as everything else as Sega doesn't allow these characters to age. And finally WHY WOULD EGGMAN NOT WANT TO BE PRAISED! The explanation that its stops productivity is just silly he is the guy that spends time making a huge show out of announcing to his elite Robots to go look for a Frog with a tail and builds theme parks all the time (even in the classics did he turn the entirety of Isolated island into a giant amusement park in Knuckles Chaotix.) And I also have issues with Sonic's actions please keep in mind that all normal grunt badniks have here in the classic era a living breathing and sentient animal inside of them being used as a living battery to power the machine. Sonic just letting Eggman's troupes go when there show up with such regular Badniks puts a really really bad light on Sonic . So sorry if you were expecting positivity but that last story doesn't even have the shield of being a pure comedy like the second story this is just bad. Maybe if Eggman was a different character (like maybe his SatAm version being stuck with such machines) or if it was just a thing the heavy's tried to do to impress him without any of the complaining form Eggman about being worshiped but as it stands do I not like it. Overall on the book would I say its first story is good but flawed, the second one is a okay comedy just not my kind of comedy and the last one is just plain dumb.

Well its kind of hard to believe that Eggman has issues with resources when the Heroes rip other Robots apart left and right and Amy has a Chaos emerald detector from Tails with her. Hooligans Now listen man I wouldn't have to break my head apart about these things if these writers and directors could all just there there heads out of there assess and make something actually sensible. I was mostly mentioning it in context of Bark as its slightly less creepy when bark blushes over a 12 than an 8 year old given that he is I believe suppose to be a late teenager. (also just because I can here random SA2 trivia: Apparent was the Biolizards roar made by combining Sonic and Shadow's Japanese death screens and adding a few filters/distortion effects over it) Eggman's birthday: And if he obviously doesn't want his creations to celebrate his birthday than WHY DID HE PUT THIS ADVANCE INTELIGENTS IN THEM FOR HIS BIRTHDAYS! I guess the Metal thing is alright its just also another one of the things Ian just does way to often just look at all of his stories and than think in how many of them there is a sudden betray or Brainwashing element in it? You will quickly realize that its one of the story elements Ian just completely over uses. Oh come one how hard can it be to get the doll under control this one isn't even live sized like in Cd or Adventure its a regular plush for Eggman to have in his bed (why he want to cuddle a Tails plush is anyone's guess) But he is also an 300 IQ genus and he effectively can make a super remote just out of tails doll (never mind that he could just give Sonic the device and have him go in close enough unless Eggman fear that Sonic will pull a Krillin on him. Yes I know which series that is and I know that the same damn writer use to be able to make something sensible so I have standards. Don't worry this is the kind of super obscure ship that it will never take of to something major. I would never put it past Iizuka that he one of these days will name drop a date with a year not realizing the consequences of his actions until its already to late. Well than why does he keep putting it in his Robot given that Sonic destroys them so fast that he can't possible have many of the same ones stick around for at least a year. (never mind that he literally threaten them all with a complete hard-drive wipe) Sure he was a terrorist before but now he is a proper super Villain that from an In-universe perspective does monthly more damage to the world than 10 9/11s would be`I know its in bad taste to compare real live tragedy to fiction but I do it only to highly how much damage Eggman actually causes I mean in SA1 alone did his actions end up in the complete destruction of Station Square, in SA 2 did half the moon have to die, In heroes and Shadow was he preparing to go to proper war with the world, In battle did his antics nearly end up destroying the planet, in Advance 3 and Unleashed did he cause impossible amounts of destruction and carnage by ripping the planted into 7 peaces, In forces did he literally take over the world and make everyone's live miserable and cause the resistance to lose hundreds of man every day if not more given how Operation Big wave ended. its only slander it it isn't true and we talk about a guy that put his face on his death Star and his Gundam that seams pretty definitive to me. You maybe remember how I still was complaining about Sonic letting Eggman just run off the last issue we talked about right? Its already bad that Sonic let Eggman be on the lose but letting him kill innocent animals by draining them of there live and doing nothing about it while it happens makes what is already bad so much worse.

"(why he want to cuddle a Tails plush is anyone's guess)" he saw those cute fanarts of tails being a mini-robotnik/adopted son that you sent me awhile ago and now he wants to make it kinda happen. i mean, with how sonic talks about metal sonic in the idw comics, i'd be worried about him pulling a krillin too. wait now, i thought we were exclusively talking about sonic team (or christian whitehead) since they're the ones who introduced the hooligans to mania without explanation. ah, so like the metalXamy ship from sonic mania adventures 6, where everyone went wild about it for like 2 weeks and then everything went back to normal like nothing happened (that was certainly a weird 2 weeks). *snicker* what if he instead ends up confirming that a year in sonic's world is 730 (or 1095) days instead of 365, so the characters do age, but it's on a much slower rate than in the real world. he just copy pastes the programming of the broken badniks into the new ones to save on time. yes, but that doesn't mean his actions at the time didn't make him a big threat to sonic the hedgecop. well gerald also put his face on the eclipse cannon and we still consider him a good man...before he went insane from grief, heck, tails puts his face and tails on everything, so is he a bad guy too? now shuddap and stop slandering the great doctor ivo eggman robotnik. well you see, if the animals die inside the robots, that's gonna be some needless cleaning to do, so eggman would release them before they die, which would leave sonic with enough time to find them and save them from their deaths via starvation or whatever, trust me, that's totally how it works. i would've loved to go on a longer tangent about classic sonic, but the next issue's coming out soon, and i don't want you writing for two threads at once, but, i will say this. remember awhile ago, we were having an argument about how sonic is boring because he's never gonna get any character development or even backstory to substitute for said development and you said "well, sega did prevent sanzaru games from using the name 'sonic origins' because they wanted to tackle sonic's origin themselves, so maybe there's that"? well, now we DO have a sonic origins!.....and it's a collection!.......yea fucc this character.

Properly You know the funny thing is I would lovingly take this as an explanation as to why the character ages don't change (beside Sonic because he still had a birthday in a canon game) Well in that case its really on him for never removing that line despite knowing it will annoy him the moment his birthday hits. The Issues suggest that all of the worlds problems are the fault of Eggman and all anthros are just happy peace loving good men like the entire world is populated by Cream the Rabbit clones. And its stats this as we including the by IDW Comics published Sonic Comic's have gotten 13 evil Anthros in the last 4 years (all 5 members of Jackal Squat, Rough and Tumble, Mimic, Starline, Fang, Bean, Bark and Clutch) by which at least 2 faction of (Jackal Squat and Clutch) requires a larger criminal underworld in society to exist. Never mind that just recently in Bad Guys did we see that there are enough criminals in this world to justify the construction of high-security prisons.
