What Sounds do Electric Cars Make?

Electric Cars are incredibly quiet. It’s usually one of the first things people notice when they get a chance to drive one or get a ride in one. But they aren’t completely quiet, and actually make a decent amount of noise in some situations. Nothing that comes close to typical combustion engines, but some that might alarm you if you are new to EVs. Here’s a few I’ve noticed in the past 6 months owning a Tesla Model 3.
0:00 Intro
0:27 Parking
1:03 Pedestrian Warning
2:04 Battery Management System
3:06 Acceleration
3:53 Horn
4:00 Lock & Unlock
4:44 Road & Wind Noise

@donutdoode69 mandatory pedestrian warning sound, does not make sense, they make more noise than a quiet combustion engine. even if Tesla is an American car, they use SI-system for their measurements. 30 km/h is a perfectly rould number in SI-system, and applicable for European regulations. If you decide to display speed usin mph, you don,t get the same round number. Unless there is an local regulation saying it has to be more, I think it is perfectly reasonable to use the same number. If there are local regulations saying a specific speed, I think Tesla should use that speed.

Read this from "The Design of Everyday Things" (by Don Norman) that the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration chose a speed of 30 km/h (18mph) because "this was the speed at which sound levels of the hybrid and electric vehicles measured by the agency approximated the sound levels produced by similar internal combustion engine vehicles." Reason why it so noisy is because it’s built on the cheap. If you watch Rich Rebuilds old videos those cars don’t have any noise isolation, you can sound isolate the cabin much better if you were to strip it down completely and cover it up better. Air suspension would also help isolating the tires form the car, also stealing from Mercedes and rolls Royce and installing dual glass windshield and side windows would eliminate a lot of wind noise.

When they add the feature to change the sound, I’d be tempted to (temporarily) change it to the sound the cars made on the original Jetsons show (yes, I’m carbon dating myself). Was curious if your parents get to see your videos of you racing Corvettes…..LOL!

@@Sibs - Other noises: 1. The clunk when the main battery contactor closes (when you open the door… I think?). 2. HVAC blower running occasionally when the car is parked. Info I found somewhere said it was to dry out the AC evaporator because of odors associated with residual condensation not draining from the system. An unexpected consequence of operator error: Came home the other day and noticed that the car did not automatically lock. It was in the garage and we were busy with other stuff so I let it go. A little while later I tried locking the door with the app, heard the horn honk twice with a message something like “doors could not be locked”. Looked through the manual to see how to reboot the car. Went out to do that and discovered that the driver’s door had passed the first latch but had not completely closed. Until I closed the door, everything was operating as if the car was in use. Am wondering how long that would go if a person didn’t eventually intervene. And lastly, with sincere apologies for my comment about your parents watching your videos because it could have been humiliating to you.

I have an electric bike and I barely notice a battery temperature rise on a 2 amp charger and it might be just lukewarm at 4 amps. If I've used the bike a lot at 10-20 amps the battery is noticeably warm (as if it had been a sunny day). I imagine with a super charger, that the heat build up would become significant. The motor makes a slight whirring sound and if I am not pedaling, I can hear an additional freewheel click.

Part of the reason why I love electric vehicles, is their stealth. I hate unnecessary attention, and many times it's best to just sneak by a55holes, like cops, drunks, and punka55 teens, then have them hear my electric motorcycle coming. I would rather build my own EVs, like by converting a gas bike to electric. But if I was to buy a production EV with that feature, one of the very first changes I will do, is disabling that sound, or wiring those speakers to a switch, so I can turn it off for stealth, and turn it on for literally blind people. Maybe I will combine it to my blackout circuit, that cuts all lights off, but the drivetrain is still powered, so I sneak by undesirable people, and also jaywalkers that would freak out into my path, if they knew I was coming. Never underestimate the importance of being able to disappear. No arguments. No awkwardness. No harrasment. And I don't have to stab or kill anyone in self-defense. I'm just gone. No wasted time or energy.

I imagine the speed 18.6 mph is because the specification was probably 30 kph, and I would further guess that the 30 kph speed spec comes from the EU.

warning speed limit in standard is given as 30km/h , word standards are metric because in practice all people outside of USA are metric :)

Well I don't own an electric car, but I do own a hybrid. Of course when the battery runs low and the engine turns on it sounds like your typical gas powered car, but when it's running on battery the sounds it makes are quite interesting

Assuming that all passenger cars or the vast majority of them go electric, I wonder if it will increase the frequency of animal strikes on the road. Or will the road noise from the tires still be enough audible warning for them?

Why 18,6mp/h? Here's the answer according to a document made in 2013 by the US Department of Transportation: "The agency chose a crossover speed of 30km/h (18mp/h) because this was the speed at which the sound levels of the hybrid and electric vehicles measured by the agency approximated the sound levels produced by similar internal combustion engine vehicles."

30 kilometers per hour is 18.6 miles per hour, that's how they came up with that number. 30 kph is a widely used safetly limit in the rest of the world for these kinds of regulations, so it's only logical that the US would use that same limit.

Alex Sibila I don't know why this video was recommended for me (don't ever plan on even getting a license never mind a car) but I'm planning on going into biotech and fun fact scientists in the US use the metric system when doing labs. I never really learned how to measure fluid because I just couldn't remember the different units and stuff until I started biotech and I ended up learning how to measure fluid in mLs so it is a lot easier to just multiply by a 1000 to get from mLs to Ls and vise versa. The graduated cylinders also helped me get a grasp on how much fluid a mLs is.
@Sibs

Can they change the Pedestrian Warning Sound. The Tone searingly hearts my ears. I hope they find that this tone causes hearing damage sooner rather then latter so less people end up with hearing loss issues in the future. This sound can be very loud at times. Another thing that needs to change is the Reverse Lights. Now Reverse Lights are not Reverse Lights. They are Warning, Hazard and Reverse Lights so you do not know what is going on anymore. The person can be standing outside of the car and the Reverse Lights are still on. Also, the Horn does not need to go off when you lock the car. The Lights flashing is more then enough. This car is supposed to be efficient. So why is there so many unnecessary electrical systems running draining your efficiency and Range. .
