In part one of this medieval history series about the Hundred Years War, Kevin Hicks offers a simplified insight into the squabbles and family feuds that sparked the Hundred Years War. Actually lasting 116 years, this long war with its battles, sieges and skirmishes devastated France and left England impoverished and in a state of civil war.
In his unique style, Kevin explores the key players and tries to track back to who and what triggered one of the longest wars in history.

Nicely done. I live in Aquitaine and am surrounded by the history of the 100 years war. There is a village just 5Km from my home called St Jean D'Angle (St John of the English). Fascinating period in history.

@@thehistorysquad I was a gunner for my sins, but the last ten years I spent in staff appointments and J2. I finished in 2003. If you have an email I can send some pictures of the German 77mm artillery battery I have just finished. I am just basing the cavalry and infantry units. There's a lot to do, but it keeps me occupied. I must focus on the old contemptibles next, they are sadly lacking in troops (much like the real event) and the poor devil's are looking somewhat embattled on my wargames table. It's good to 'chat' with another soldier. My old RAF pal passed away a couple of years ago and I miss pulling up the old sandbag and swinging the lantern, so to speak. You stay safe over there!

Hello, since you ask how "Sluys" is pronounced, I am a Flemish, my roots being in Zelzate (a Belgian frontier town and which is close to Sluis, a Netherlands or Zeeland border town). Sluys is now written Sluis: you should pronounce the ui (or uy if you prefer) like the vowel in "bird", hurt" or "nerd". It is not entirely that sound, but it is close. It is not at all pronounced like you pronounce it (Slouizz like in "Louis"zz): a Dutch needs to read it then to understand it (LOL). Thanks by the way for the lectures, enjoy them very much. Sincerely, Dirk.

Ever wonder why most staircases in medieval castles were built to be extremely narrow and spiraling in a clockwise direction? Since medieval castles were built mainly as fortifications, staircases were designed to make it extremely difficult for enemy combatants to fight their way up. Since most soldiers were right-handed, they would need to round each curve of the inner wall before attempting to strike, inevitably exposing themselves in the process. The clockwise spiral staircase also allowed the defenders to use the inner wall as a partial shield and easily allow them to swing their weapon without being hindered by the curvature of the outer wall. The stairs were also intentionally poorly lit and built to be uneven, making it even more difficult for the attackers to gain any sort of balance or momentum during their fight up to capture the castle.

Wow!! I've been learning so much about history since I was 8 and I'm 56 now and I never knew Isabella was the sister of Charles IV of France. I never never knew that!! I totally forgot about her brother being King because she was frustrated with her husband because Edward the second was a nightmare to be married to and he always hung around these guy friends of his.. he and Isabella did manage to have one heir which was Edward. THEN ISABELLA HAD IT WITH EDWARD II AND THERE WERE RUMORS HE WAS GAY AND SHE LEFT AND WENT TO FRANCE. Her brother, now I remember as Charles IV wanted to have a talk with Edward II... Ha😂 I can't believe that I forgot about this.. it's just that I never knew this had anything to do with the 100 years before!! Anyway Edward II refused to go to France and I think he was probably scared he would be killed so he sent Young Prince Edward instead...😂😂 Prince Edward grew up to be king Edward the third and here he was sent to France as a child & Isabella would never send him back to England. Isabella and this guy named Mortimer fell in love. When Henry was a teenager they went back to England with an army & undefeated Edward II and until Edward III could be old enough to be on the throne, they were essentially regents or council for him.... Oh boy when Edward reached age to rule, he was furious with his mother because of the fact that they had essentially murdered his father but there was a long story behind that and it wasn't that Isabella herself did it but a lot of the nobles in England did it because the nobles were furious with Edward II and his relationships with these two men.. Anyway Edward was mad and he sent his mom away and I think he imprisoned Rodger Mortimer and... I think that was his first name.. but anyway I just was not thinking about this being a problem and leading up to the hundred years War at all. But obviously Edward III would have been more closely related because siblings are much closer than cousins..

@@ThePdelamere the Hundred Years began in 1337, in the medieval era (aka the Middle Ages). In this video we take you back a little further to 1066 which is when William Duke of Normandy (France) invaded and became King of England. Still the medieval/middle ages period though.

What really sparked the Hundred years wars could be undefinitely discussed... However, though I'm French (and staunch monarchist, there is still some here), I must admit that the claims of Edward III were perfectly legitimate. And it's easy to understand why : his mother was no less than Isabelle of France, daughter of king Philippe IV Le Bel. Philippe had three sons, Louis, Philippe and Charles, who successivly became kings after the death of their father, but didn't have any male heir who survive long enough. When the last of these sons, Charles IV died, the choice for France was between Edward, grandson of king Philippe IV, or Philippe de Valois, nephew of Philippe IV (his father Charles was a younger brother of Philippe Le Bel) and by the same way cousin of Edward. But, as Kevin said, it was unthinkable for France to give the throne to an English king, no matter he was the closest and most legitimate heir. What solution France found ? The court's jurists exhumed an article from the so-called "Salic Law" dating from the 4-6th century and edicted by the Merovingian dynasty, that everybody had forgotten for nearly a thousand years, and which excluded women to the succession to the throne... Whether they were right or not is another problem !

@@thehistorysquad There was one mistake when you talk about Edward 3 claim to the throne. If you reject the salic law (women can't became queen whatsoever after Philipp 5 take the throne despite Louis 10 daughter in 1316), then the closest male relative who can inherit the throne after Charles 4 is not Edward 3 but Philipp of Burgundy, Philipp 5 grandson while Edward is only Philipp 4 grandson and is below any Louis 10, Philipp 5 and Charles 5 grandson in 1328 (Philipp of Burgundy was born in 1323).

The HYW started when the French decided to conquer England. Philip VI remarked to some English ambassadors that the two countries would never be at peace until they were ruled by the same man - and he didn't mean Edward III. Nor was this just idle speculation, as the French began a series of aggressive moves against Gascony, while arming and funding the Scots to attack England and planning to send a large army to Scotland to take part in a joint invasion. Eventually the English got fed up with this underhand behaviour and decided to do the honourable thing and issue a formal declaration of war. Obviously, once you're at war you devise some war aims of your own, to compensate for the losses you suffer as a result of enemy aggression - like the French in WWI who, when attacked by Germany, aimed to reoccupy Alsace-Lorraine - so Edward III revived his claim to the French throne. However, it is intellectually dishonest to see that as the root of the war: it was a result of the war breaking out and was thus an effect, not a cause. Once the war became official - instead of the rather Nazi-like tactics the French had been using - then the Scots were put on the back-burner and used merely as a distraction while the French prepared an invasion of Southern England. However, Edward III seized the strategic initiative in Flanders, and the French were forced to respond. This, combined with the destruction of the French fleet at Sluys thwarted the planned invasion, though the French revived the scheme on several occasions - in the 1380's and again in the early 1400's - but these also failed. This is why the French actually lost the HYW; trying to claim otherwise involves ignoring everything that happened prior to Edward III claiming the throne. When the French began plotting, they assumed that all the fighting would take place in England, and were totally wrong - just as when they declared war on Prussia in 1870 they imagined that the fighting would occur in Germany and proved to be equally wrong.

@dupplinmuir113 The french royalties never tried to invade england to be kings there as their only real attempt was in 1216-1217 and it was only because the nobles of england asked them. Gascony was part of france so if the kings of france judged that one of their vassal (in that case the kings of england but also dukes of gascony), then they had the right to take the land so that's why Edward who knew that fighting directly against Philippe 6 for Gascony made him a rebel decide to use his maternal lineage and claim the throne of france but he was never rightful with or without the salic law. The reason why the 100YW is the same for all the wars since 1066 as two kings will always fight each other if one of them is the other's liege. The only way to end the conflict was either for the kings of england (and also dukes/counts in region of france) to become kings of france or for the kings of france to take back all the lands in france owned by the kings of england as dukes or counts. In the end, the 100YW wasn't a war between two kingdoms but england + france loyal to the plantagenet/lancastrian dynasty against france loyal to the Valois dynasty (in the last few years of the war, many soldiers fighting for Henry 6 were gascons)

Only 100 years . not that uncommen in those days . the war for succesion of the counts of holland was over 140 years .that war started as the count willem IV of holland was killed in a battle with the frisians. but he was also brother in law of king edward III and allied him self during that conflict . With willem IV dying in 1345 and that starting the hook and cod war for succesion quite the few wars and skirmishes that lasted a verry long time.
