--------------------------------------------
Welcome to today's video! The topic of string gauge has gained some popularity in the RU-vid guitar community, with creators like Rick Beato and Rhett Shull recently uploading videos to do with the difference in tone and feel between multiple gauges.
This is not a response to those videos, however 'what string gauge do you use?' is a question I'm often asked online and I figured now's as good a time as any to finally give an answer.
In this video I talk through my experiences of using different gauges on different guitars over the years, and explain why I now use 11's on all of my guitars.
The deciding factor for me is note tone... it's tension. I own multiple guitars with differing scale length's, and because scale length affects string tension, this means that a set of 10's will feel different on a Les Paul compared to a Strat.
Most Fender electrics including Strat's and Tele's have a long, 25.5" scale length, where as most Gibson electrics - like my Les Paul Standard - come in at a shorter, 24.75".
Then you have some electrics - like my D'Angelico Premier DC - that will fit somewhere in between the two, at 25" exactly.
I wanted to get another guitar players perspective on this topic and so I visited my friend Rhys Gilchrist to get his thoughts. Rhys is a fellow guitar teacher based in Edinburgh and I was pleasantly surprised to find out we share the same opinion on the subject.
I mentioned in my recent video about noodling - bit.ly/StopNoodling - that I've started taking private lessons once again. Rhys is the teacher I've been going to. You can find his website linked above - I would highly recommend hitting him up for a lesson. He has a great knowledge of jazz improvisation and is really good at teaching you new information in an easy-to-digest way.

When it comes to string gauges the best advice I ever heard was told to billy gibbons from BB King.... known for playing light gauges, BB played gibbons guitar and asked him , “ why would you want to work so hard?”. Now gibbons plays 7’s.... I’ve worked my way in a long process from 13’s down to 9 with no tonal difference really

Thank you for being a voice of reason in a world of click bait. String gauge is important, but the important thing is to find a set that suits your playing style and make you play the best you possibly can.

It all comes down to preference and comfort to the individual at the end of the day. I personally play 13s and they haven't let me down so far, and it's not going to be the same for everyone. Cheers for your take on the topic

I'm curious to know if you play pure 13s or yo mix it up a bit. For example, most players feel intimidated by SRV playing 13s the way he did, but few know he used a set of mostly 11s and he'd put a fatter 1st and sometimes 6th string as well in there. Also, do you bend a lot? I used to use 11 and had a blast, but ended up a bit tired so I went down to 10s and 9s.

I’ve gone from 10’s & 11’s to 9’s and I don’t know if I’m going to a lighter gauge in a few years, God willing that I’m still around. Reason: I’ve played guitar for 56 years. String gauge was more a matter of prestige; “I play 10’s because I can.” I have arthritis in my wrists and it is must noticeable in my thumbs. At times the pain can hurt almost as much as hitting my thumb with a hammer (back in my framing days). Sadly, it has reached the point that I play mostly my electric and my classical guitars. The strings on my dreadnought are more and more difficult to play with each passing year.

I've been going trough a similar experience, 10s on all my guitars and a few weeks ago I started to get pains down the back of my left hand when working on learning some material with a lot of bends, I restrung a few guitars with 9s and started doing the hand exercises that I really know I should be doing and all seems to be well - 10s feel good to me but my hands aren't getting any younger and I honestly don't know if I'm exercising them or wearing them out at times. 14s and a slide then?

I've been liking the heavy top regular bottom (purple) Power Slinky strings. I find that the extra weight on the thin strings helps me keep the fretted note in tune, and not overbend!
@mattpalmerband130

I aim for similar tension across my guitars - which means heavier gauges on shorter scale-lengths. At the moment I run 11s on Strats/Teles when tuned 1/2-step down (switching to 10s when in standard pitch). I run 11s in standard tuning on my Gretsch, which has a shorter scale-length. I have also started using "balanced tension" D'Addario strings. It just seems to make sense to me to have similar tension across the strings - although I can see why many would use a heavier low-E string in particular. Thanks for the video and discussion.. :)

Great video Ross! I enjoyed hearing your perspective as well as Rhys'. I've also got 11's on all my guitars and have used the same sets for almost all of my time playing. I started with 10's but after a couple of years, I decided to try a heavier gauge. It really suited my feel/style of playing better and I've never looked back since. I imagine that you can get used to playing any gauge if you practice with them long enough. I see Josh Smith playing with 13's and he can still do all sorts of large bends and make it look easy but he does say that he plays guitar pretty much everyday because he doesn't want to lose hand strength. As for tone, I really think the differences in sound can usually be compensated for by adjusting the EQ on your amp.

Been fun rethinking string gauge with all the guitar postings. I moved away from slinky strings along time ago. I also been dropping my tuning for the last couple of years. I was playing 10’s with a heavy bottom and then decided to move to 12’s in Eb Standard. 12’s were good, but we’re giving me a little too much fatigue when I played for a while? Transposing Eb to wasn’t easy all the time, and I was still referencing the guitar as if it was in E Standard. My singing voice still wasn’t in the sweet spot. I then was inspired again, and dropped down to D Standard. The tension and pitch seem to be working for me? I’m also relearning the notes on the guitar and chord positions, so I can transpose and play jams more easily with people in Standard tuning. Songs that I have written or have learned sit better with my vocal range. I don’t like a mushy, rubbery feel on my guitars, and I like my electrics to not go out of tune if I dig in. I want the dynamics of playing softly, and aggressively to come out. For me, this means having some tension, and mass on the string. I enjoy the fight. I still foolishly chase the magical piece of gear that will make me a guitar wizard! Or, make make tone epic...sadly, it’s still about practice, patience, and dedication. Ironically, it’s the fight of 12’s, and my desire to improve my technique that is forcing me to relax my hands and only use as much force as necessary. It also forces you to be deliberate with your technique. Now that I’ve talked myself off the ledge, I can get back to searching for the next ultimate amp, guitar, effect to buy! Or, practice??? 🙄

I started using 12s on a 25.5 scale Semi hollow for the 1st time a month ago after 8 years playing 11s. It sounds so much better! Yes there is a little battle going on with phasing/blending but I like it. I will be trying 11s beefy Slinky's on my Majesty. However after 45yrs of playing..I have been concentrating on having a softer more relaxed playing style to focus on micro phasing. A beautiful adventure that might have me back with 9s for the Majesty 25.5 scale. Funny thing I have never like 10s on any guitar.

Well, after using Elixir 10's (Optiweb) for years on my Strat and Eclipse II, I'm about to up my vibrato game by going to 9's. Elixir strings have more tension than any other strings I've tested, so the 10's are a struggle to keep vibrato on a full-bends; not impossible, but just a pain to practice. I'm gonna try and play comfortable from now on, in regards to aforementioned. This does not mean I won't be out of my learning comfort zone. If I were to go any lower than standard tunning, I would go back to a heavier gauge.

I used 11s for a long time until I had surgery on my left wrist and thumb. Now I use a 9-46 set on my solid bodies and 11-52 flatwounds on my jazz box. I don’t do much bending on my hollow body, but I play rock and blues on my solid bodies. I just wish they made 9s that sounded as good as 11s…. The closest thing I’ve found are Ernie Ball M-Steels, which are pretty high output strings. They’re pretty pricey but I find they’re worth every penny.

I have different guage setups on all 3 of my guitars as they each have different scale lengths. My Les Paul gets hybrid 10's high, and equivalent to 12's for the bottom 3. My PRS has straight 10's and BTW this one has the best feel in terms of string guage /tension. My Strat has 9.5's. I think. I honestly get a bit mixed up because every one of them has slight differences. But I am certain that A) all three are different, and B) that the PRS is straight 10's as stated.

I agree with you. its all abaut tention. I installed 0.12-0.52 elixir on my telecaster. 1. to reduce the tension of the strings I straightened the guitar neck and leveled the string height according to the radius. 2. I can get the same sound (like small guage ) by moving the pickup away from the strings. 3. and miraculously, I don't need to buy saddle compensation on my telecaster. all in tune.

I started out with 13s, flat wound, in the 60s, but with age came an assortment of hand problems, so the Fender 9s and Gibson 10s feel comfortable. I even got an LP Traditional that came hybrid and I like that--even though it feels almost too easy to play. Sometimes it is nice to not make playing a struggle--and there were certainly times when it was better (and it seems you are there). Yes, personal preference says it all--and no, it doesn't matter a lick what I or anyone else use except to me and that anyone else themselves. Stay Well.

When playing with a keyboard player, the chords need to sound in tune. 11s will sound more stable but on open chords I wonder if the higher tension variation close to the nut will have an opposite effect. BTW, my father played in a TheShadows tribute band and he always needed 12s with a wound G, on his strat, to get closer to the sound of the early records. It depends on your needs.

Great video Ross. Strings are no different than pedals or guitars. We, guitar players, are always wanting to know what each other is playing and we are influenced by that. I play in Open 90% of the time and I play 11-49 it's always been stable in the lower tuning and feels good. The sound is the sound tight loose you can adjust all that with what you're playing through.

These string videos have made me think of a question. I have two strats. One is a 1971 Fender, and the other is a 1992 Charvel strat copy. Both have .10s, same brand. Both are setup with very similar action. Both were refretted just a few months apart by the same guy who used the same fret wire. Both have the same scale length. Both trems float. Why, then, do they play so differently? The Charvel plays better. It has a slimmer neck and a rosewood fretboard and I guess that's it, but it feels like the string tension is different.

But after considering why I play heavier stings I thought; I like em! Why shouldn't I play em? I played 10's for years but I think heavier strings sound better, especially the low strings. Ross, have you ever experienced "bad strings"? I've noticed I can open tune my G string and my B string perfectly, but they sound awful together (I just adjusted all intonation but that should not effect this anyways). I have to drop tune my G string noticeably 2-3 cents to get it to sound good with the B string. It sounds fine too all the way up the neck like that. Any thoughts? I tried a different tuner as well. Odd as hell.

Deek Johnson, I have been struggling with unwound G intonation for years, and especially on a Strat dropped down a whole step with 12’s. Same fix. I often use a tuner to get all but the “G” ...for me “F” strings in tune, and then fret the forth and third strings, in a couple of spots, and tune it in by ear. This makes the guitar play in tune around the neck
@thestereoclub6735
@thestereoclub6735 2 года назад
Guitar is a tempered instrument- the fret positions are approximations. The necks from the company True Temperament are fretted to compensate. The open G is the worst offender- the fretted A is noticeably sharp and a sour 5th in the D chord, especially if you have a heavy left hand. Tuning the G string by getting the A right solves most of the problems up the fretboard. The trade off is a less offensive, slightly flat open G. Some guitars seem to avoid this problem, probably due to a happy accident of wire gauge, the nut slot and the position of the fret and how it is crowned. Some guitars are terrible. Bonamassa says getting the two As on the G right is good enough.

Od video but I will make a comment. I've read through a lot of the comments and I see a lot of people say they use 11s, 13s etc and that's fine. There is no right or wrong. It all comes down to personal preference. I've been playing for 40 years. Tried 10s for a long time on my Les Paul and strat and could never really get used to it. My strat is now tuned down a half step and I use 9s. Van Halen did the same thing. My Epiphone Les Paul Tribute 60s plus is in standard tuning with 9s. I have adapted the philosophy of players like Brian May, Billy Gibbons, B.B King, Malmsteen and many others. Don't make it too hard for yourself. I think a lot of players who use very thick string gauge will be surprised how much easier it will be when they try 009s. I recommend watching Rick Beatos and Rhett Shulls videos about string gauge. Very interesting. Keep playing your thick strings but don't be afraid to try something like 009s. You might be surprised.

Here's a story from Billy Gibbons. "Billy Gibbons reveals guitar strings advice B.B King gave him: “Early on, I’ve got the privilege of sharing a dressing room with BB King upon which he said, ‘Hey, do you mind if I have a few strums on your guitar?’ Well, at the time, I was thinking to get the big, bad, loud sounds from the blues guys. You had to have super heavy strings, and it just took one or two strums and BB looked at me kind of quizzically and he said, ‘Why are you working so hard?'”

I´m 41. Not pro. Started drumming around 13, got a bass around 25 and a guitar at 27. For me, each instrument have a personality. Strings tension, height and other stuff is related to what you´re going to play. So instead to set all my instruments similar, I started to set them to what I´ll use them for. A blues guitar has more string height and gauge. Beefier tone. A metal guitar has thinner strings, closer to the fretboard. And so goes on. To each their on.

Not having a go at you - I think all of us have at least thought those thoughts at some point, even if we don't follow through as much as others. Since I got carpal tunnel and arthritis, I have had to abandon such foolish pursuits. Look after yourself fingers and hands. They are waaay more valuable than your guitar, or guitar/gear collection.

Can u go straight from 10s to 11s without a set up? I was told u couldn't? 🤔

You can try out 11s and if you like them I would advise then getting a set up.

The truss rod will need more tension probably. You’ll get more bow in the fretboard if you don’t. Shouldn’t need anything past the truss rod. Floating bridge will need the spring screws tightened in and might need to add a spring but probably not.

Great video, man. Love your stuff. I too agree with you. It's about what you want from the guitar and how you want to get there. With that said, I go with 11-54s (across the board) and will always use ernies exclusively. Cheers, mate PS- how's the move to Nashville going?

If you go too heavy you might shorten the life of your guitar neck. I tried to talk my friend out of a heavy set for his acoustic. He put those heavy strings on like all the macho dudes. Now his action is higher and less playable ( the neck isn't adjustable to my knowledge). If you have a tremolo or short scale, you could put a heavier set of strings on (because it is easier to bend the strings). As opposed to something like a telecaster (longer scale) with a hard tail bridge. It just depends on your needs.

Some of the times that I screw up on my guitar it's because of my super bionic like strength in my hands. Sometimes with light gauge strings I even bend the side E strings off the fret board by mistake. Heavier strings could be an advantage when playing styles that don't require as much bending like Jazz. Where you just want the strings to be in perfect pitch while chording etc.

Did you watch this video? Rick's video focused on the difference in tone between four gauges when recording the same riffs through the exact same rig each time. This video has nothing to do with tone, it's about string tension.
@RossCampbellGuitarist
@RossCampbellGuitarist 4 года назад
I should add, that's talking about string tension in the context of how well the guitar feels to play for the individual. Not how it affects tone.

@@RossCampbellGuitarist As far as I remember he also talked, very briefly, about the specific impact that low tension strings have on the way we play and concluded (Rhett Shull semmed to agree) that lower string tension allows for more dynamics. Anyway, string gauge is, ultimately, a matter of personnal choice ;) P.S. Excuse the english, it's not my mothertongue...

Sure. But heavy strings and a higher action is what it took for me to become aware of my tendency to overplay, and I now play better as a result of that.

Plenty of "what string gauge to use?" videos within the last couple weeks. Try different ones, pick the ones YOU like. There's no "should" to it, unless maybe you're shooting for some bass strings on a ukelele...save yourself some video bandwagon time. I hope this concern will fizzle out, before the "what color of guitar sounds best?" videos roll out.

It's become disappointing how all these guitar youtubers are copying each other, like network TV shows. I started to really notice it after everyone copied Ola's first Metal Zone video; plugging it into the effects return. In Rick's long video all three guys played similar rock material, two in the key of A, both banging out Malcolm style, no clean sounds, no bending / vibrato demos or discussion. None of them attempted anything near Schenker/Malmsteen/Gary Moore vibratos. I didn't watch Rhett's, thought it wouldnt offer much more value for my time since he's friends with Rick and was in Rick's video as well. Nor any other vids on string guage until this one, which has my sentiment, "Use the strings that you like", and I agree tension is THE most important thing, for the techniques that you want to execute. A little EQ can make the different guages sound close enough to each other if you're really that distracted by the tonal differences. For me, in the late 70s / early 80s I switched from 9s to 10s on Gibson scale and started to experience joint pain doing wide, fast rock vibratos. I went back to 9s on Gibson and 8s on Strat scale to execute what I want to play.

Great vid Ross. Thanks! It's funny that many guitarists started with 9's and then switched to 10's for years. I did the same and only tried 11's at the beginning of this year. I switched out of curiosity after I watched Tim Lerch's vids regarding his telecaster setup and was amazed at how much more responsive my guitar was. (FWIW: Tim used D'Addario 12-54's). As Rhys mentioned, the guitar sounds more "piano-like", more separation between notes (for clean tones anyway). Tim is a great Jazz/Blues player from Seattle, WA and really seems to know his tone and tele's. I think he has great tone. It certainly inspired me to try something different and I'm glad I did. Here's the vid I watched if you're interested.: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PkA0sMHoiuw.html
