The string tension calculator is so fun to play around with. I had fun discovering the gauges for my Strat (25.5 scale length tuned down a half step) that have similar tension to my 335 (24.75 scale length tuned to standard). Thanks, Scott!

Great to see someone that cares about this topic. Light top / heavy bottom sets really aren't good for drop tuning in terms of the d and a string... It has been fun calculating string tension the past few months and ordering custom sets from you. I have my gauges nailed down pretty nicely. If only you guys had a 57 though, that would balance my rhythm strings out perfectly.
@Stringjoy
@Stringjoy 6 лет назад
Glad it's been helpful! We need to do a whole video about this, but the reason we don't make odd gauges (for the most part) is because of the tolerance of wire. In essence, any wire drawn anywhere will have a tolerance of at least .0003, meaning a ".009" is anywhere between a .0087 and a .0093 in actuality. Once you compound this tolerance to wound strings it's actually .0009, so in essence a .058 will be anywhere from .0571 to .0589. Gauges are more brackets than they are perfectly specific measurements, so if you had a ".057" it would overlap a ton with .056 and .058, so it'd be a bit disingenuous to call it that.
@LifeSoDetermined
@LifeSoDetermined 6 лет назад
Thanks for the information. I didn't realize they can vary that widely. Good to know. I'll either keep the 58 or go back to a 56. I like the higher tension, but the string is a little too big at 58 relative to the others. It seems to be more difficult to intonate the higher frets with a thick string too. Every other string from you is intonating just right though.

Super informative and a mega overlooked topic. Great information and great tips. Over the years I combine my own sets of strings. My favourite strings are the d'addario nyxl and ernie ball paradigm and that is not for the obvious marketing reasons (durability, strength, smoothness). But merely for there extra string tension, because of there metal combination. So you can get away with smaller gauges

Cool video, thanks for posting it. One question I need to ask you. I'm going to be sending in my wooden resonator for a setup and I want to pick a good gauge of strings while it's being adjusted. I like to play finger and slide and I usually play in open D, open G, open E, and sometimes standard. In your opinion what would be a versatile gauge that can handle these tasks? I I know that this is a lot to ask, but I'm at the learning and experimental stage of messing around with multiple styles of tuning, so I'm not ready to purchase multiple guitars until I'm past the experimental stage so optimal tone in a specific tuning is less important than the versatility of tuning to the different tunings.

Sorry if you've already found a good set by now, but if not, but similar to what Dylan said, a 10-52 is a good starting point. However, instead of the stupidly thick 30 and 42 for the D and A strings. I've found using a 28 and 38 for the D and A with a Drop Tuning really feels balanced. Its a tiny bit tight in Standard. But the 28 and 38 are super versatile and feel about the same between E standard almost down to C# standard. So ultimately. You have a set like: 10 13 17 28 38 52. Hope that helps give you a solid starting point!

In D standard, the tuning you've outlined, If you want it to feel like a set of 10's in E, I'd personally recommend 11 14 18 28 38 52. If you want to do drop D (DADGBE) just use a standard 10 and swap the low E to a 52. And for Drop C a 56 instead of the 52. Hope that helps!

For Drop D, why not simply reduce the 4th string to a .026w and the 5th string to a .034w? This comes way closer to balancing tension than anything that was shown here. The only drawback I can see is that .034w to .052w is a pretty big jump in terms of how it would feel. OK, so use a .038w instead. (I understand I can order a custom set -- I'm just trying to understand the thought process here.)

Hm, I want to use both of my Tremonti SE guitars for live use (25.5" scale) however i'm unsure how to figure out which set of strings would be beneficial to me... I'm currently using one guitar in Drop B (B/F#/B/E/G#/C# - Low to High) using the following gauges .60/.46/.34/.20p/.16/.12 (low to high respectively) however during a recent recording session I had to put a 62 on the low B because of pitch issues (probably down to me picking harder as well as the use of Jazz IIIs) and yet I liked how the .62 felt to play too! With regards to the second guitar I am looking to tune it a whole step lower, Drop A (A/E/A/D/F#/B) BUT I like the tension I get with Drop B using said gauges, so what gauge strings might you suggest for me to achieve a similar tension in the lower tuning? Many thanks!

@MrCholoPants3415
@MrCholoPants3415 4 года назад
10-52s are amazing for Drop C on a 25.5 inch scale. It seems light, and it is, but it feels nice. It's what August Burns Red uses. Alternatively, if you don't want them quite so loose an 11-54 is perfect for Drop C.. Anything higher than that feels like shit in drop C imo.. E standard is just a typical set of 10s. 9s are lame af, don't do 9s lol. But yeah, I'd buy a pack of 10-52s and 11-54s for drop C if I were you.

Is there a gauge or certain type of strings that is good for switching between all different tuning but sound equally as good. I use DR DDT strings. Or DR drop down tuning. I change tuning a lot and I don't think they get to tight for standard or to loose for drop c. Also GHS strings thin to thick are a great choice if you want to be able to drop and still do easy bends in standard on the high strings.

Im in a similar position i use a solar e2.6 it has light top medium bottom strings 9-46 I like playing around the C tunings. I re-stringed it with the same gauge recently, but for some reason it was way floppier than it was before, not that it was ideal for C to begin with. Hey there! I have a question about string gauges. I have 2 seven string guitars where I seem to have a problem with tuning stability with the low B string. When I have a set of strings with 10-56 both my guitars sound great in tune (I tune down half a step to A#....now the problem is, when I put on a set of strings with 60 or 62 or even 64. The low B string sounds very “unstable” like it’s out of tune with itself!?....all the other strings sound fine with power chords but not the low B, it sounds completely out of tune with power chords....I then put on a 0.74 on the low B and then it was stable!?!?. It’s the same problem on both my guitars! I have a schecter loomis with a new nut installed by a pro and a custom made guitar with Zero fret install and Evertune. So I don’t think that the nut is the issue. I have tried to put on new strings 3 times with a 0.64 with the same result!?....056 and 074 the tuning and power chords sounds perfect! I’m really confused! Hope you can help Cheers!
@Stringjoy
@Stringjoy 5 лет назад
Hey Claus, so you do probably need something in the 60-64 range for B/A, but you need to adjust the intonation at the saddle to get it to intonate properly, as your guitar was likely set up to intonate well with a .056, and a .074 just happens to intonate similarly.
@misanthropolist1808
@misanthropolist1808 5 лет назад
Stringjoy But I guess that intonation has something to do with 2 strings (like power chords to be in tune with each other?) When I pluk ONLY the low B it sounds like....I don’t know to describe it?...vibrations in the sound, and I guess that is what causing the power chords to sound out of tune?.

I have a PRS Mike Mushok signature guitar that has a 27.7 inch scale. I took it to my local music shop and gave them a set of Ernie Ball baritone strings (13-72) and asked them to tune it to drop F#. So the 72 gauge string would be used for the F# and the 56-13 remaining strings are used for essentially C# standard tuning. When I went to pick my guitar up, it sounded horrible. The 72 gauge string was so wobbly, and even the lightest gauge strings had so much annoying fret buzz. The guitar tech told me there was nothing else he could do and that I would need thicker gauge strings if I wanted it tighter. I told him there's no way that can be true when other people have told me they tune to F# on baritone guitars and they're using string gauges lighter than 72. And often times they're using standard 25.5 scale guitars. It makes no sense to me at all. Why should I need to use higher than a 72 on a baritone guitar, when endless other players are using 72 or lighter gauge strings on a standard length guitar? Also, this is a baritone guitar, where the longer neck naturally increases string tension. So I was absolutely in awe when he told me there was nothing more he could do. When I brought the guitar back home I fooled around with the bridge saddles a little bit and I was able to get the 72 gauge more tense and firm, but not entirely to my liking. Did my guitar tech not do his job? Or is a 72 gauge truly not thick/heavy enough for F#? And if its not heavy enough, then how are other guitarists able to tune to that note using a lighter gauge string than a 72? I own 3 other baritone guitars that have the same set of strings on them (13-72) and they are tuned to G# on the 72 string. So technically 2 frets higher than F#. The G# plays like a dream and no complaints at all. I don't understand how dropping the tuning 2 frets automatically turns my 72 string into a rubber band and all wobbly. I am hoping you can help me out with this situation. Do I need to try a 74 gauge? Or should I go straight to 80? 80 just seems overkill to me for going to F#. I would've thought you would use an 80 gauge for doing like a low E or something. The reason I specifically brought up a 74 and an 80 is because those are the only other options for Ernie Ball strings that I could find that are lower than a 72. Ernie Ball has 2 different sets of 8 string guitar strings. One of the sets comes with a 74 for the low string, and the other set comes with an 80 for the low string.
@Stringjoy
@Stringjoy Год назад
Thanks for reaching out! If you're looking to move off from Ernie Ball, our team would be happy to help you come up with a custom set that will suit your needs well! Just hit us up at support@stringjoy.com. If not, I'd hit Ernie Ball up about what they would recommend from their product line. FWIW, 72 is very light for F#, an 80 would be the most common solution.
@MrWillyWonka
@MrWillyWonka Год назад
@Stringjoy thanks for replying so quick and thanks for the response. Not to argue, but how is 72 considered light for F# when again other players are using like 68 on 25.5 scale length guitars and still having success. It's just not making any sense. If anything, I would think a baritone guitar would get away with using lighter gauge strings like a 68 for F#, not a standard length guitar. I would think the standard length guitar would be the one needing the heavier gauge strings. But from what everyone is telling me it's basically the opposite.
@Stringjoy
@Stringjoy Год назад
You're right that a standard length guitar needs a heavier string, however the fact that some players use lighter strings has no bearing on what's right for you or your guitar. A .072 in F# has roughly the tension of a set of 9s in standard, an 80 is closer to the tension of a set of 10s in standard (and still a bit lighter than that). Using your 13-56 in C, you have effectively the tension of a set of 11s in standard, but with the feel of a set of 9s in standard on your low F#, so it's just out of balance with what you have elsewhere in the set.
@MrWillyWonka
@MrWillyWonka Год назад
@Stringjoy thanks again for the response. I guess what I'm taking from what you're saying is that my 13-56 gauge strings for the first 5 strings should be more than fine for C# standard. If I add on an 80 for the F#, that should be fine then according to what you're saying? This would end up being the tuning I'd use for my baritone 6 string: F# C# F# B E G# (low to high)

also i have played with increasing tension every stiring, i personally love it cuz i can get a bendy medium-light on the highs and really bite into the ultra-heavy lows without note wobble, and i did notice that problem with volume, so i just tilted the crap out of the pickup. adjusted the high really close and the low side a little back and it sounded just fine. lil screwdriver and 5 minutes of double plunking was all. most pickups for metal are flat anyway because of the fret radius (or lack thereof, talking to you ibanez, lol) so its just a matter of tilting a flat pickup to balance the volume of a fairly flat string set. yes, you can end up with pickups like a quarter inch difference in height from one end to another but it sounds good. so that is super easy to fix and avoid volume inconsistencies. if you have multiple pickups you can even skew them differently if you want a lead sound and one flatter for a heavier rhythm. my strat bros know what i'm talking about already.

Totally-and what works for you is what matters of course! Typically the real issue with progressive tension is just on the bottom couple of strings. Going .038 - .052 - .072 is a pretty big stretch in my opinion. But again, it's all about what works for you.

Man, string gauge is a can of worms. Just for example, Barry Stock of Three Days Grace uses 13-62 for drop C and he uses a baritone guitar. I think 26.5 or 27. But typically when you use extended range guitars you can get away with using a little bit lighter strings. I use 10-52 for drop C. Just the Ernie ball skinny top heavy bottom set on a 25.5 scale guitar and I bet they would work just fine on yours as well.

Hey my man good video. I have a question. I am starting a band and want to play in drop B, drop A/A#, and in drop C. I only have one guitar (Schecter Damien Platinum 6 - Satin Black ) and would like to be able to switch between those tunings. Is that possible and if so what strings would you recommend? I was thinking gauge 12 but I'm not sure

I really disagree about multiscale. If you take a 10-56 set and a multiscale 25.5"-27", the plain strings will be ok but not the wound strings. They will be too tight, at least in comparison of a 25.5" scale. And once again the lower string (B in that case) will be too small to drop A.

I play down to B and A with 9s. Not a big deal. I rip on my guitars and they don't buzz or flop around at all whatsoever. It's an absolute bullshit myth that you NEED thicker gauge strings. All 3 of my guitars have 9s. A Tele, Strat and a Mustaine Sig Zero VMNT.

ive been playing metal far too long. lol. i think the lightest set i have is for my strat in C and i'm fairly sure its a 70-14 or something. i once tuned my strat to drop d...um, but the D in the bass range, (wanted to play some 12ft ninja covers) and i ended up with a 135 on the bottom of a standard strat. like 31 pounds of tension. it was like playing bridge cables. good fun. and hey, Stringjoy, if i like your tension calculator, i can delete Kalium from my favorites, cuz that is all that company is good for...a really good tension chart. lol.

This might be a bit too obvious as an answer for it actually be a solution, since I'm sure someone else might be doing exactly this, but the problem of the huge gauge disparity might be lesser if you made the lowest string more dense. You said that manufactures have their own "secret sauce" as far as density (I don't get how that could be secret when there's probably a scientific way of determining any string's density, but maybe that was a joke), but I'm assuming they like to keep most strings the same density. Maybe don't? Lowest string more dense, allows for a smaller gauge than it would be otherwise, while achieving similar tension to a thicker gauge that's less dense. Ya know since the mass would be the same.
@Stringjoy
@Stringjoy 3 года назад
Great question! So the issue is that with string design you are fighting stiffness-when a string gets too stiff it doesn't resonate properly (this is the issue with .026 and higher plain strings, you can see it in our All Plains video). So it's all about getting that mass while maintaining flexibility for the string to vibrate unimpeded. So you could in theory make a super high-mass .046 with a .036 core and .005 wrap, but that string would sound like absolute garbage.

7 string guitars dont have 25,5 scale, its usually something longer like 26,5 or 27 soo you should consider that
@royalcat10
@royalcat10 6 лет назад
Many 7 strings do have 25.5 scale lengths though, primarily Ibanez 7 strings will have that scale length. Not only that, but as long as the scale length is increased the same amount on all strings, say 26.5 in. on all strings rather than a 25.5 on all strings, then the percentage increase of tension of all strings should be roughly the same across the board. For example, if the scale length is 26.5 in as opposed to 25.5 increases the string tension of the bottom string by roughly 2 pounds, then the tension of the highest string will be increased by roughly 2 pounds as well. He doesn't really need to go into detail of different scale lengths because the same idea is applicable to all. The only time you would need to take scale length into consideration (When speaking of how each individual string relates to another) is when you have a guitar with fanned frets and multiscale length. But, he did address that.
@filipsak9913
@filipsak9913 6 лет назад
okay, didnt know that, but i would be interested too see video like this about multiscale guitars and fanned fret necks
@Stringjoy
@Stringjoy 6 лет назад
Yep we know, but longer scale lengths don't substantially change the balance between each string, they just increase the tension across the board. We also do talk a bit about multi-scale guitars in the video.

So I just read the recommendation and I gotta say that a heavy light set is so close but probably suitable for me. In standard or drop d (when I just bring that low string down) I play super lights (9 - 42) on a gibson. That's what I like. I'm having a guitar setup for drop c and using the heavy light pack (10 13 17 32 42 52) while the recommended set is ( 11 14 18 32 44 58). I like super slinky and hopefully what I chose works out. In the words of B.B. King about heavy strings, "Why are you working so hard?"
