Ah, Tarantino. This was THE toughest video we've had to make, but the process was just so much fun! I remember watching Kill Bill as a very scared and timid child, far too young to watch an R-rated movie, but when literal _geysers_ of blood started to come out of the Crazy 88 like high pressure pumps, I stopped being scared, and started being entertained. The violence did indeed start to be fun, giving me an adrenaline rush.
For contrast, I really enjoyed that one. Everything I'd hoped for, and then some. Speaking of cinematic violence, tarintino really played this one on the edge. When it happened, it was absurd.
8:45 the accidental murder of marvin was accurate, if you shoot someone in the face point blank with a .45 or a .50 cal or even a 38 it will infact blow your head off . but i still see your point, this was just an outlier

Connections: 1- Dr. King Schultz and Paula Schultz - Dr. King Schulz is a character in the movie "Django Unchained,"wich is a German dentist turned bounty hunter. Paula Schultz is the name of the grave that Beatrix Kiddo (The bride) from the movies (Kill Bill Volume 1 and Kill Bill Volume 2) was buried. Paula Schultz was the wife of Dr. King Schultz. While searching the web for these connections I found a theory on the Miramax website that speculated about Dr. King Schultz and why he was in the bounty hunting business at all. In the beginning of the movie, Django asks him how long he has been a dentist and he answers with he had given up dentistry almost five years ago to become a bounty hunter. Dr. King Schultz never talks about family much, but it is speculated that his wife, PAULA, left him and that is why he took up the business. Later his wife realizes the terrible deed she has done and goes out seeking him, only to find he has been killed by Calvin Candie. After hearing this she is so devastated she never gets married again, and keeps Dr. King Schultz’s last name. Finally she dies in 1893, buried with the tombstone that says PAULA SCHULTZ 1823-1893. That’s the same grave that Beatrix Kiddo is buried alive in almost one hundred years later. 2Django Unchained and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood - The Western town set (Melody Ranch) is used for movie Bounty Law and can be seen during the interview with Rick & Cliff. 3-Red Apple Cigarettes - the cigarette brand created by Tarantino can be seen in the films "Django Unchained", “The Hateful Eight”, “Inglourious Basterds”, “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”, "Reservoir Dogs", "Four Rooms", "Death Proof", "Planet Terror", "From Dusk Till Dawn", "Pulp Fiction”, "Kill Bill Volume 1". PACK OF RED APPLES, keeping with our theme of Tarantino’s signature brands. 4-Gerald Nash, Marvin Nash and Gerald Nash - Gerald Nash is a member of Gang Bacall. Django Freeman and Dr. King Schultz are searching for their leader, Smitty Bacall, in the movie "Django Unchained". Marvin Nash is the tortured cop in "Reservoir Dogs". Gerald Nash is a policeman killed by the Knox couple, his death is mentioned in the TV program in "Natural Born Killers". Gerald Nash is the Great Great Grandfather of Gerald and Marvin. Marvin and Gerald are cousins. 5-Crazy Craig Koons and Captain Koons - Crazy Craig Koons is a member of Gang Bacall. Django Freeman and Dr. King Schultz are searching for their leader, Smitty Bacall, in the movie "Django Unchained". Captain Koons is a character in "Pulp Fiction", played by Christopher Walken. Crazy Craig Koons is the Great Great Grandfather of Captain Koons. 6-THE MAYNARDS - RELATIONSHIP: GREAT GREAT GREAT GRANDFATHER AND GREAT GREAT GREAT GRANDSON (ISH). While it’s never explicitly confirmed, the guy who yells out “Ain’t no ni**a gonna kill Maynard!” in Django Unchained is probably named Maynard. Assuming this is true, the rest of his family survived under the knowledge that a black man came through and killed their own kin. Further stoking the fires of what already seemed to be a racist bunch, this otherwise epic story would be the perfect indoctrination for little racist Maynards to pass down from generation to generation. Maybe even to a guy who owns his own pawn shop, complete with sex toys and a leathered gimp downstairs. At least, that what seems to be the case in Pulp Fiction. Pulling a particularly hostile attitude on Marcellus Wallace (Ving Rhames), the great-great grandson (Duane Whitaker) of Maynard is not only a racist, but a sexual deviant with law enforcement assistance (Peter Greene). 7-Oswaldo Mobray and Lieutenant Archibald Hicox - Oswaldo Mobray known as English Pete Hicox he is a gang member outlaw Jody Domergue of the moviev The Hateful Eight. Lieutenant Archibald Hicox is a British Army officer who joins up with The Basterds in Inglourious Basterds. Played by Michael Fassbender.Pete Hicox Great Great Great Grandfather of Lieutenant Archibald Hicox.English Pete & Archie Hicox. Relationship: Great Great Great Grandfather And Great Great Grandson. 8- Johnny Madrid is a dangerous outlaw who became a legend after his criminal acts, character "From Dusk Till Dawn 3: The Hangman's Daughter". In "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" the character James Stacey plays the legendary criminal on the Lancer TV show. 9-Santanico Pandemonium - is a character in the movie "From Dusk Till Dawn 3: The Hangman's Daughter" and "From Dusk Till Dawn". Santanico is a stripper in the club Titty Twister in Mexico, she is also a vampire queen. In "From Dusk Till Dawn 3: The Hangman's Daughter" is revealed that her real name was Esmeralda. 10-Titty Twister - is a vampire bar that appears in the movies "From Dusk Till Dawn 3: The Hangman's Daughter" and "From Dusk Till Dawn”. The curious fact is that in the movie "From Dusk Till Dawn" it is completely destroyed, but in the movie "From Dusk Till Dawn 2: Texas Blood Money" there's another vampire bar with the same name. 11-Razor Charlie and Razor Eddie - are the brothers working as bartender in Titty Twister, and are also vampires. Razor Charlie appears in the movies "From Dusk Till Dawn 3: The Hangman's Daughter" and "From Dusk Till Dawn". Razor Eddie in the movie "From Dusk Till Dawn 2: Texas Blood Money". 12-Lt. Aldo Raine:Character in Inglourious Basterds played by Brad Pitt.Floyd: Floyd is a character played by Brad Pitt in True Romance. Floyd is Dick Ritchie's unemployed roommate. Floyd loves to smoke weed and watch TV. In "Quentin Tarantino's Universe", the character of Lt. Aldo Raine is Floyd's - aka The pothead on the couch from True Romance - great grandfather. 13-Sergeant Donny Donowitz and filmmaker Lee Donowitz - Sergeant Donny Donowitz is a character in the movie "Inglourious Basterds", member of the Bastards, known as The Bear Jew. The filmmaker Lee Donowitz is a very successful film producer in Hollywood, character in the movie "True Romance". Lee is the son of Sergeant Donny Donowitz. 14-Adolf Hitler (historical figure) was the leader of the Nazi Party and head of state of the Third German Reich. He is featured as a character in the Inglourious Basterds, and his image appears in Natural Born Killers when Mickey Knox is watching television at the Hotel. 15-Death Proof - Tarantino’s half of the experimental double feature Grindhouse - introduces audiences to Mike McKay, a murderous stuntman portrayed by Kurt Russell. Fast forward more than a decade, and Once Upon A Time In Hollywood sees Russell cameo as another stunt performer named Randy. Is it possible that these two guys are related? We think it’s highly likely. Sure, the main thing connecting them is their matching profession and Russell’s involvement, but that’s more than enough to make them relatives in Tarantino’s shared universe. For our money, Stuntman Randy is the father of Stuntman Mike and his brother, Bob - as ol’ Randy’s a bit too long in the tooth to be anyone else. 16-Charles Manson (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Natural Born Killers) 17- El Coyote is a restaurant and also works on the US-Mexico border as a motel. It appears in the movies "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" and "From Dusk Till Dawn 2: Texas Blood Money". 18- Vega Family - Vic Vega aka Vic Palito or Mr. Blonde is a psychopathic bank robber character in the movie "Reservoir Dogs". Vincent Vega is a gangster in the movie "Pulp Fiction". Vic and Vincent are brothers. The Mexican restaurant where Rick (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Cliff (Brad Pitt) characters from Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is called Casa Vega. The owners are parents of the Vega brothers. 19-Larry Dimmick and Alabama Whitma - Larry is known as Mr. White, a bank robber, a character from the movie "Reservoir Dogs". Alabama Whitman is the main character in the movie "True Romance". Larry Dimmick has already done some criminal work in partnership with Alabama Whitman.
its simple, you just need to know when to push the right buttons and how your violence engages with the whole story of the film, style, characters. Even when Tarantino goes overboard with his violence, it never loses the context of the bigger picture and of course, I mention it is simple, but in reality, no it isn't that's why Quentin's style is entertaining to watch. Nice video.
Fucking fantastic video! That edit to close it on the QT line with the Ennio song, just like in the ending of Kill Bill Vol. 1 (which brings me to tears), is so great. Well done!!
I think you not only nailed exactly why I personally like Tarantino's films so much. But you also nailed why I think people enjoy violence on the bug screen. Gg well done.
"What I'm in this movie is that violence is everywhere. It's in our cereal boxes, man!"-QT character on Simpsons Couple years later "Kill Bill" person shoots someone with a gun hidden in cereal box. Pop culture everyone!
It has always been the question and it will never be the answer. It comes and when it goes, it's realized to a tee, dependent of how it is accepted or denied! great analysis once again peeps! Thank you!
incredible video. My most sincere compliments, sir. Do not care about those two vicious thumbs directed downwards, those are both from different accounts of tarantino's interviewer you put at the end.
This helps explain why he got wrapped up in doing a movie about Charlie Manson and the Tate murders. Now I didn't watch much of this video, but I would expect any video about the history of violence in film would include references to A Clockwork Orange, Bonny and Clyde and Catch 22.
Here are the top 10 Psychopaths in the Quentin Tarantino films: 10. Mr. Blonde - Reservoir Dogs 9. Richie - Dusk till Dawn 8. Louis - Jackie Brown 7. The Bribe - Kill Bill 6. Elle Driver - Kill Bill 5. Feminists - Death Proof 4. Calvin Candie - Django Unchained 3. Stephen - Django Unchained 2. Daisy Domergue - Hateful Eight 1. Sadie - Once Upon a Time In Hollywood
Bottomline, for me, Tarantino is entertaining as all hell, regardless of how people are attracted to, or repulsed by, the stylistic violence. Personally, I enjoy his films a great deal, and always eagerly await his next venture. Additionally, he manages to create some of the absolute best dialogue in modern film with his scripts. You guys did a great job here exploring Tarantino's fixations, and the visceral reactions to some of his filmography; well done, gentlemen, well done. _However_ I must mention again, as I did in one of your earlier videos....please, PLEASE dial back the background music. No matter if I use headphones, or my large desktop speakers, or laptop, the music is just...too much. IF it's needed at all, then it should not be at the same or similar volume as your voice. Honestly, it takes away from your intent: to engage people and have them actually hear what it is you're saying, and the import of those words. Perhaps it's just me, but if I have to struggle to discern what you are saying, the goal has been missed and I end the video more frustrated than enlightened. At any rate, this channel provides unique insight and knowledge like few others, and I always look forward to a new upload; just be aware that the issue with loud background music is something that turns away a significant number of viewers in much of media these days and can be easily fixed. Take care and may your endeavors bring you the recognition you deserve.
Hey there! Thank you for the kind words in this video and in our Scorsese video, as well. We're glad to have a new fan! And thank you very much for the constructive feedback, we'll get to solving this problem for our next video. If you notice anything like this again (in future videos), feel free to let us know so we can get better. That's what it's all about. Thank you and welcome to our channel :)
Whoa, man. See, this here is what YT and so many other places on the internet need more of. I am duly impressed. You not only quickly respond to people, but you take suggestion to heart, consider them, and then strive to address it for future videos to make your work even more pleasant. I was already a big fan, now I am a HUGE fan. You, gentlemen, are going to get your channel link emailed to everyone I know that enjoys film. Thank you again for the stellar work, intellect, and time that you put into this project.
@Ms Bliss ~ No, _you_ think it is a steaming pile. I, on the other hand, quite enjoyed Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, and liked it even more on the 2nd viewing.

Hey a matter of film! Lovely video, really enjoy your guys content. It really gives me an insight on film making!. My favorite Tarantino movie must be Django. Loads of action, interesting characters and amazing music. Oh... and speaking of music... what song do you guys use in the outro? Its amazing! :D
Primarily there are a lot of different statements and explorations of meaning. Each film has different ideas on that area it's trying to express. It's a fascinating thing to think about. It's never really condoning it even when it's supposed to be just for fun and even when that's there there's always something else going on to make it more than mindless. Never a wasted moment. They all say something even when that can also be interpretive.
Violence IS fun. The body gives you an adrenaline/dopamine/norepinephrine surge as a defense mechanism. The concurrent high is undeniable to most that have committed multiple violent acts. What’s not fun is the consequences of violence, which the movies conveniently allow you to forsake.
So crazy that i watched Pans an hour ago. Watch this video and see this comment. Holy. It was my 10th time watching it. It's near perfect in terms of thought-provoking film making.
Quentin Tarantino is one of our times greatest directors. My rankings of his movies would be: #8: Jackie brown ( not bad, but compared to his other works. Not too great. ) #7: Death Proof ( decent first half, but it lost me at the second ) #6: Kill Bill vol 1 and 2 ( Vol 1 is so fucking badass, but 2 was definitely a step down ) #5: Reservoir Dogs ( this would have come in at number 4, but the middle of this movie wasn't that interesting ) #4:Inglorious bastards ( basically the way everyone wanted this war to go. This movie just leaks genious. ) Now my top 3 are very close. So close in fact, that my number 2 and 3 spot switch almost every week. #3: Pulp Fiction ( I don't even have to say anything, it's just that good ) #2: Django Unchained ( this movie got me into Tarantino, but it wasn't until this next movie that he became my favorite director) And at number one, I give you..... Drum roll please....... #1: The hateful eight ( imo, this is Tarantino's masterpiece. It has Sam Jackson at his best, a great score by Ennio Morricone, Beautiful Cinematography And some of Tarantino's best writing ) And that's my list. Please, by all means, share your lists, cause they most definitely will be different. And please, do not send hate. This is my opinion, let's be mature about this. From one Tarantino Fan to another, I salute you.
Kill Bill Vol. 2 is a more slow and thoughtful film and I thought it was a beautiful contrast to the high energy of the first. You already saw the fun, cartoonish, high-pressure blood anime stuff, it's time to take a step back and go for realism this time, actually thinking about the implications of the violence.
Love Quentin Tarantino movies, Fair dinkum his movies have you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. And it's not only about the violence but the black comedy.
I think you just helped me to understand Tarantino a bit better. I had problems to understand why he uses so much graphic violence and why he tells his stories a certain way. I think I tried too much to find philosophical reasons for these points. I do not like it when voilence is used cheaply. Maybe I will now have more fun when I'm watching a movie by Quentin Tarantino. My favourite Tarantino was The Hateful 8 because of the brilliant story buil-up
Kill Bill Vol.1's really unorthodox fight scenes, cinematography, and choice of obscure music that highlight plot points of the movie is what really *really* intrigued me about Tarantino's film and even the processes involved in filmmaking as well. It was probably one of the most interesting experience that I've ever had watching a movie.
I know I’m years late but one of the things I love about Tarantino the most is the understanding that all of his films are set in the same universe. Follow me for a second. So inglorious basterds introduces a new time line in history where we actually succeeded in killing Hitler and obviously this became a major historical event, in part because it was so violent. This story would be taught over the years and would have a major influence on culture, inadvertently making people more violent. By the time we get to the modern movies (PF, RD, JB) society has become ultra violent. It’s become normalized. Which is where kill bill comes into play. Because kill bill is actually a fictional film SET in this universe. That’s right kill bill is a movie made in the alternate timeline, it’s something people in that universe would have been able to go see in a theater with their friends. And because society in this universe is already so violent in daily life, the movie had to be turned up to 1000 because everyone is so desensitized. It is purposely WAY over the top and exaggerated, because anything less would be too mundane for this hyper violent audience. This is such a fun little fact that I think many people don’t know or don’t realize and it completely changes the way you look at not only his filmography as a whole but kill bill in particular, it’s insane world building and ridiculously meta, but I love it.
