One of the best examples of a proper use of voice-over is in Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now, the visionary take on the Vietnam War and its hallucinatory states of consciousness. Today, we’ll be taking a look at Apocalypse Now’s Voice-over Narration and why it works so well.

There’s something to be said about voice-overs, though. Sometimes people criticize them, arguing that films should “show and not tell.” Fair enough. But really famous voice-overs in some great movies show that the technique can work. This leads us to ask, when is it OK to use a voice-over? One of the best examples of a proper use of voice-over is in Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now, the visionary take on the Vietnam War and its hallucinatory states of consciousness. Today, we’ll be taking a look at Apocalypse Now’s Voice-over Narration and why it works so well.

We've been wanting to do a video on Apocalypse Now for a while. We noticed, however, that there were already a considerable number of videos analyzing the film and Channel Criswell made an amazing video that covers pretty much every aspect there is to tell about the story and characters (that analysis is amazing by the way and we highly recommend it. Link in description). So, we decided to talk about Apocalypse Now's use of voice overs and expository dialogue. Much different than what we originally intended, but we liked the result. A big question for you movie lovers out there: If you could only watch one or the other (the other would cease to exist), which would you rather watch: The Godfather or Apocalypse Now? Comment below, let us know. And as always, thank you guys so much for the support! Also, a big shout-out to our supporters on Patreon! If you would like to further support our channel and get some pretty sweet benefits in return, check out our Patreon page: www.patreon.com/amatterofilm . When we reach our goal, we'll make a video on one of the best T.V. Series today (and one of our favorites): Mr. Robot!

First watching 'Apocalypse Now' at a midnight screening in the early 80's, I found it overwhelming: the sound, the visuals, the length..! It was truly a fully immersive experience. I later acquired the soundtrack album on double vinyl which included music cues, dialogue excerpts, and almost the full Michael Herr narration which successfully translated the story to an aural experience, like a million dollar radio play (not surprising as Walter Murch is a master sound designer). Which leads me to ask, what kind of genius was Coppola to have conceived and delivered such an astonishing piece of work? Yes, it's a magnificent spectacle, which retells a classic novella that is updated with some of the most damning critique of the Vietnam war up to that point, for sure, but it works in almost the same way as literature, weaving a story that is maybe all told in flashback, from a single point of narration, Willard's, accreting plot and character details just as a novelist would, 'I hardly said a word to my wife until I said yes to a divorce'. It is such an assured treatment of the material that Michael Herr's contribution should not be underestimated. 'Dispatches' is a terrific read.

I saw Apocalypse Now at the cinema in the UK when I was 17. I remembered the Vietnam War being talked about on the news when I was a child but never understood it and questions to my father produced little enlightenment. This film brought home the reality and brutality of what it was all about. I loved the film and still do. Respect to the veterans!

Actually, some of the voiceover was narrated by Martin Sheen's brother, Joe Estevez, when Sheen was recovering from his heart attack. He apparently performed body double too. Great delivery either way, I'd never guessed it isn't Sheen's voice the whole time, I'd be hard pressed to guesss who says what at what point.

I recommend reading Future Noir, the book about the troubled making of Bladerunner and how a fluke gave us the chance to watch it as originally intended years later. Because the notion of a voice over was present all throughout the films creation. And its evolution to what we heard and then ultimately excised is fascinating.

I guess the alternative to voice over could have been to have another character along that was also part of the final mission to neutralise Kurtz. It wouldn't have been the lonely journey it is now. The scenes with Killgore are wonderfully made, 'Charley don't surf', underlining the difference in culture and mindset, the guy playing on the bugle to sound the attack, (they were the cavalry of the new era), the wagner-music (my boys love it), the pristine village with cute schoolchildren, the obsession with the surfing, the fact that Killgore was actually not a total monster, by letting that woman and child be taken to the hospital in his helicopter, the fact that Killgore was a cool father figure for the people in his command, he really made sure his boys weren't missing home too much. He was relatable, acting tough under fire, but still childish and stamping his foot when the surfing didn't go through because of the napalm, and then really going out of his way to get his surfboard back after they stole it.

Great essay, for the most part. Left unmentioned is the source material, Joseph Conrad’s “Heart of Darkness,” the literacy and thematic seriousness of which Michael Herr’s narration thankfully attempts to emulate, as opposed to original screenwriter John Milius’ macho posturing. That said, I don’t think the narration reaches the heights of Herr’s own “Dispatches,” which is a masterpiece of gonzo war reporting. But that’s one mighty high bar.

In reality Blade Runner is narrated by Gaff "you've done a man's job (meaning : your work is evil - you killed your own innocent kind since Deckard was a replica himself and innocent because they were created by a corrupt decadent man kind to be slaves) ..." and if you ask yourself how he got there so quickly, the answer is that he was watching the last fight without intervening. Another small detail hard to miss, is that when Gaff meets Deckard for the first time he doesn't speak English, as if he didn't want this mission to start! Read the short story "Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep" by Philip K Dick on which the movie script was based.

The jingoistic and completely void of recognizing nuance Praeger University ad I got at 10:40 was an excellent touch to underscore why the message this film reveals is so important. Well played, RU-vid, well played. I think the narration works well here because the source material - Conrad’s “Heart of Darkness” - is based on Marlow’s narration. The story is being told to an audience after everything has occurred, slowly revealing itself but never taking liberties with providing answers. BTW, if anyone is interested “Apocalypse Now” syncs nearly flawlessly with Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon” in the same manner that “The Wizard of Oz” does.

Per Charlie Sheen on the documentary "Milus", his Dad trying to do this wasn't going very well, with Martin not getting the required nervous, just on the edge of losing it feel. Script writer (and often effectively the co-director) John Milus pulled out of his bag a 1911a1 .45, and out it on the script stand in from of Sheen, as his son says "a total pacifist". "Pick it up, Martin" Milus ordered Sheen. The actor hesitantly did so... Milus continued... "Seven .45 rounds in the magazine, one up the spout, and as you can see, cocked and locked. NOW read the lines while you hold it...." It worked, as you can hear.

Hey man, good question. Even though the narration in The Hateful Eight didn't add much to the story itself, I think it gave the film some added Tarantino style he's so famous for. @pasajerodelabrujula8261
@pasajerodelabrujula8261 6 лет назад
Nerdwriter used to go into deep analysis, introspective video essays that would dive deep into the core of the topics & subjects that he would chose. He would form his own ideas based on his own perception of what he interpreted. Now as of lately he’s been regurgitating information that’s not his own, rehashing old iconographic landmark household people & items. He uses his own stylistic rhetoric and narrative he’s known for but not on his own “detective” skills he used to amaze us with. Before we used to get video essays on Arrival, Children of Men, Logan, The Secret of Sexism and older videos like these. Now he’s been relying on lesser analytical efforts like Darth Vader, How Micheal Jackson Makes a Song, How Music was made on Super Nintendo. I feel like his videos as of lately have lacked the sting they used to.
@TheGeorgeD13
@TheGeorgeD13 6 лет назад
I would disagree on that for the most part. The part I thought I agreed with, which wasn't really what you were talking about, was that he used to focus on some very specific things that pretty much nobody else is thinking about very much. And anything that you get used to will lack the sting they used to have. You can only maintain a certain edge to your work only for so long. Look at Spielberg for example. Still great work, like Nerwriter, but perhaps lacks the sting that it used to have.

This was done after Martian had suffered a Heart Attack and was in poor health at the time also Martian and Coppola had a bit of a falling out, so his brother was called in to do it which his brother did most of it. His Brother was also a stand in for several shots as well in Martians Role. Here is Joe telling the story. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lR80zXPE5i4.html

He and his staff need rewrite third act which turn out much more upsettling and darker.
