Hi, I have a Bachelor of mass media degree from India and MA in Journalism from UK. I've taught mass media subject in a private Indian high school for a few months, but I really want to move out of the country and as I love teaching, I was hoping to get employed by a school/college abroad after a year or so as I need to get more experience in teaching first. I saw your answer on a Quora post so just wanted to know if doing a CELTA or TESOL/TEFL course helps. I wanted to stay in England after my MA but they didn't give us a post study visa 5-6 years ago. I had contacted Asian College of Teachers yesterday and they told me that their TEFL-TESOL in-class course has a great value that can help me teach my own subject (mass media) in English language, even in the countries like the US, Canada or UK. I have to be honest that I'm really very confused how it'd work but they do ask to give exams conducted by TESOL Canada at the end of the course and after successfully completing the course, 2 certificates are given. Do you know anything about them?
The fact that you have an MA from an English speaking country is definitely a feather in your cap and something that you should refer to prominently in your application. Out of TEFL or CELTA, you're going to give yourself the best chance if you get CELTA. The difference between them is the CELTA is like a Mercedes, and most TEFL certificates are like a bicycle in comparison. There are some other decent programmes out there, but the only one I can recommend in good consciousness is the Trinity CertTESOL. Now, as for working in the US/UK/Canada, let's be honest here, you are going to face discrimination in this field. That's not saying you shouldn't try, but if you want to get there then you're probably going to need to get yourself to the UK (or other country) first and then apply and even with a CELTA that may not come off. Another option for you might be to hit the Arabic gulf first - countries like Oman or the UAE. I would guess that you could easily save enough money there in a few years to then support yourself in the UK/US/Canada. Sure, it's a longer route, but they have fantastic weather there and long holidays! I miss the long holidays! :) And certainly you're going to get more money and better job security working for a university teaching your subject than you're going to get working for a private language school - so if you can, I'd stick with that even if the opportunities are fewer.
