What the Death of Iran's President Means for the Middle East and the World

On May 19, 2024, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi's helicopter crashed during a return flight from Azerbaijan. Although it seems that all of the political power in Iran is concentrated in the Ayatollah, that is not quite right. The president has a fair bit of leeway, and the fact that an election will have to be held soon matters for regime security regardless. This video explores the deeper consequences of the accident and what might happen next in Iran.

Sanctions may not make helicopters crash in zero visibility conditions, but if anything crashes due to spare parts, you can squarely put the blame on USA. Then again, given that the victims likely voted for the anti-American leader or were part of a revolution that toppled a pro=American leader, maybe we shouldn't shed any tears when that inevitably happens.

every dictator knows their demise is soon to be, the only task for them is to steal as much money from the regime as possible and move to another country (dude is probably faking his own death, no way he could live this long and still believe that Islam is a legit religion). For a similar dictator example the president of Sri Lanka left with tons of money and lives a free man while Sri Lanka is completely broken and being bailed out by communists, which is the whole point of "green policy".

i would not call this "bad piloting". In many cases these accidents happen because of power dynamics, where the pilots are forced to fly in unsafe conditions by leaders, celebrities or billionaires. Remember the plane with Polish leaders, or the one with Russian generals and admirals, or Cobe Briant, and many more such examples where the pilots were forced to fly in unsafe weather just because those in change don't accept no for an answer.

And who murdered tens of thousands people in defiance of the Islamic law and was called for this crime by the great ayatollah Montazeri. I am from the west and I cannot say I would want to live in an Islamic country lead by someone like mentioned Montazeri. But I respect different cultures and social norms/preferences of people. Leadership of someone like Raise is nothing cultural/social, it is just a pure evil rightfully denounced by real religious figures. By the report I saw, the fog was localized along the ground ( as it typically does) and the clouds were few.The conditions that make fog do not also create lots of clouds, so relatively clear skies often take place with fog also present. The 3 helicopters traveling together (the government entourage) flew around the clouds and over the fog as was common behavior for that. It is still not clear why they crashed, they say. The other pilots report that they did not see the final moments of the crash and after landing safely went back to look for it. Who to believe, right? IMO , we will never really know why it crashed.

I’ve lived in Teheran from 1972 to 1978. I know that if you helicopter crash in the mountains North of Teheran you would not survive overnight as there are lions and tigers in the mountains as well as typical 30 degree nighttime mountain temperatures. Additionally, the mountains are an exceptionally difficult terrain to survive in. Many people have driven cars right off the road & have plummeted 1,000 to 2,000 feet to their death. Their death is no less than the hand of God.

Atom bombs are almost a century old technology now, helicopters are not. While "died in an aviation accident" has historically been code for "covert assassination", my hunch is that it's unlikely in this case, *because* of the weather. The logic/assumptions are as follows: 1. If it was an assassination carried out by anyone *other* than someone within the Iranian government, the fact that the weather *just happened* to be perfect for an accident is extraordinarily lucky. 2. The only way for "the right weather for an assassination" to happen by anything other than chance is A) if he was sent to a place with bad weather on purpose (this is impossible because the visit was scheduled long in advance), or B) if whatever device caused the "accident" was on every helicopter the President got on. Since the odds of such a plot being found by security during routine checks are extremely high and the consequences for getting caught would be dire, this would only be realistically possible if carried out by someone within the Iranian government. 3. If you're the Ayatollah, given how many political challenges Iran is dealing with these days, if you're gonna assassinate your President, you'd be an idiot to choose something that looks accidental. You would pick a gunman, bomber, or drone, so that you could capitalize on the subsequent rally-round-the-flag effect. So, yeah, if it can't be anyone *other* than the Iranian government, and since it would be very weird for the Iranian government to choose this method, the balance of probabilities lies on "genuine accident", as weird as that seems.

Not to mention how many checkpoints are visible - during the night - on the other side of river Aras from Nakhchivan part before arriving in Norduz/Nordooz. Russia produces the msot advanced helis in the world, including the only ejection seat capable heli Khamov-50,which rpoved its usefullness in ukraine. The reasons are logical. Old heli-> jamming wont work, also old analogues equipments are preferable compared to modern systems which can be hacked. Their army uses better helicopters,it was a strategic decision making. Also it wasnt the heli that had the problem,it was the thick mountain fog. Remember kobe bryant death?
