Quickly cast your mind back to the start of 2023. Before Red Bull won all but one race, before Verstappen’s dominance tanked F1 viewership numbers more than any scandal ever could, before any hope of a title battle had been ripped from our hearts. I’m talking about when Aston Martin turned up to race one in Bahrain and looked like potential race winners. It was a heady three and a half months as Fernando Alonso looked within touching distance of a race win, finding regular podiums in a way that had eluded him since his time at Ferrari a decade ago. Then the upgrades came, the car declined, and it’s become the same old story for Fernando Alonso. Aston Martin for those eight short races looked like they could become a new power within Formula One but everything fell apart. 16 points in the last five races which includes a sprint race, losing out to the likes of Haas and Alpine, it’s a collapse that has been far greater than Alpines, but far less public. So what on earth has happened to Aston Martin? And why is it so embarrassing for the team?
