1968 first album Jethro Tull This Was. Ian Anderson is still playing today 50 years later. Chevk out Jethro Tull live from Madison Square garden. The live performance of Thick as a Brick is excellent! The album by the same name was released in 1972. It is one continues song that covers both sides of the album and is about 42 minutes long and one hell of a piece of work! The Madison Square garden live version is about 12 minutes long and a great live performance. You won't find any other band that puts on a live show like Tull does.
@daveking9393

Ian has COPD and recently announced it publicly - which may explain why he's had trouble getting enough air to sing for awhile. I can't see him continuing to tour much longer, but he's had a far better run than most, and the vast majority of the music he composed and performed has stood the test of time. A close friend who knows Tull very well gave me the following feedback "I try to separate the art from the man, but the day he ruthlessly eliminated Martin Barre from the band, Jethro Tull died for me. It was just gone, and I've not bothered to follow what Ian has done since. I will go see Martin Barre however, wherever he plays. His shows are more like vintage Tull than IA's recent ones by far. Another interesting thing about Tull's history (which I've learned from listening to the "Talk Tull To Me" podcast) is just how much the other band members often contributed in talent and creativity to some of the band's best albums. For instance, the Hammond organ/keyboard player John Evan, often written-off by fans as a minor contributor, was a major force in making the ambitious, epic "Thick As A Brick" work. Without his creative use of the Hammond organ, the album would have been quite boring, or worse. The rapid changes in texture and driving rhythm of the organ carry the whole thing, with the rest of the band hanging flourishes on that foundation. I never realized it, but going back and listening again, it's true. People often thought (including Ian) that "Jethro Tull *is* Ian Anderson, but in retrospect on a lot of records it's really not true."
@johnhoerl7326
@johnhoerl7326 4 года назад
David King Totally agree about Ian’s callous treatment of Martin. I’ve been a huge Tull fan for many years, and I’ve seen them live several times. Great shows musically, but Ian’s voice has been declining for years. If I recall correctly he had nodules on his vocal chords, maybe? In any event, Martin has always been a vital architect of Tull’s sound, a versatile guitarist who can do everything from ballsy rock to complicated prog licks to delicate acoustic music. I’ll go to see Martin any day, but I’m done with Ian

@@herrbonk3635 cool video, but its not really "bad ass." That is typical, floaty, light flute playing. I think the reason Ian Andersons playing is so bad ass is the raw emotion behind his music. Playing a side-blow instrument like that, your body is somewhat contorted and off-balance. If you stand on one leg, it forces you to make sure that your body is correctly postured to hold the instrument and to breathe while you're doing it.

Songs from the Wood is the tenth studio album by British progressive rock band Jethro Tull, released February 1977. The album signalled a new direction for the band, who turned to celebrating British pagan folklore and the countryside life in a wide-ranging folk rock style which combined traditional instruments and melodies with hard rock drums and electric guitars. The album is considered to be the first of a trio of folk rock albums: Songs from the Wood, Heavy Horses (1978) and Stormwatch (1979). An extended title line appears on the album cover: "Jethro Tull - with kitchen prose, gutter rhymes and divers - Songs from the Wood". The title track contains two of these phrases in its lyrics. The UK music-paper adverts read: "Jethro Tull present 'Songs From The Wood'. A new album of Old Magic. Songs From The Wood. It's inspired by the thought that perhaps nature isn't as gentle as we'd like to believe. And it takes as its theme the natural and supernatural inhabitants of the woodlands of old England. Warm and friendly, harsh and bitter by turns, it includes 'Ring Out Solstice Bells' as well as Tull's new single 'The Whistler' and seven other songs. Find a quiet spot and listen to it soon."

Perplexing Metallica, Jethro Tull and just about everyone else outside the music industry. I suppose it's the same logic that gets rap/hip-hop in the R'n'R H.o.F.

@mark tamayo Then changing the name to the Pop Music Hall of Fame seems appropriate because despise what Ice Cube said, he's wrong. Rock n Roll is first and foremost a genre of music seperate from rap and hip-hop. Should Mozart be in there too because he supposedly had a rock n roll attitude? It makes no sense.

Common mistake.. The Grammy was for hard rock/heavy metal (later split off the metal category which Metallica won). It was still an odd choice. Tull's record label ran an ad after that stated "the flute is a heavy, metal instrument". The band didn't even bother to attend so poor Alice Cooper accepted for them and was booed.

@mark tamayo did you even listened the video above? Where do you hear folk rock? I mean obviously folk rock is one of the genres JT explored but hard rock too. Just thinking about Minstrel in the Gallery, For a Thousand Mothers, To Cry You a Song, Taxi Grab, Something on the Move, Beastie. They sure are hard rocking tracks

They got the band together in 1967, son! It's pronounced like dull with a T. His name is Ian Anderson, and his daughter is married to Sheriff Rick from The Walking Dead. I learned to play the flute in the late 60's because of him. They started as a blues band in England when The Blues was King. They are one of the most innovative Rock bands of all time! No one in the band is named Jethro Tull. He invented a plow several hundred years ago. Go figure!

I was 14 and 15 when I saw Jethro Tull in concert during the 70s. This band didn’t bother with an opening act and performed for 2 hours (one short break). When you first walk into the arena; the energy is felt before the concert begins. Tull fans know they’re in for an electric performance and can barely contain themselves. BTW...no cocaine in the balloons. Talcum powder is often used to keep the balloon from collapsing while it’s pumped with air 😉

I'm 59 years old. I saw Jethro Tull when I was in the 8th Grade in Junior High at the Forum in Inglewood Ca. where the Lakers used to play. My first concert. It is pronounced Jethro Tull. The Tull is almost like toll except with a U. The cat playing the flute is Ian Anderson. People call him Jethro Tull, but that's not his name. He has to be quite old now, but he can still bring it. So cool to see him again.

Jethro Tull was formed in the late 60s, the song Locomotive Breath was released in 1971, this performance is from 1982. They are still around today, although the only member from this performance still with the band is Ian Anderson, the leader, singer, flautist, acoustic guitar player, principal song writer, etc.

Their "Aqualung" album that contained this song, was released in 1971. The entire album is worth a listen. Music, specifically Rock and Roll, knows no age or color. The Rolling Stones, which has original members fast approaching their 80's, had a Summer tour planned for this year before the Covid hit. Oh yeah, Jamel said to say "Hi!" and to hit the subscribe button.

The studio version was recorded entirely by Ian Anderson...the band wasn't getting the sound he wanted so he recorded each instrument track separately himself to get it how he wanted it. Edit: I got to 'rub elbows' with Ian at a concert back in the '90's, (he doesn't shake hands), absolutely the nicest performer I've ever met. Very personable and appreciative of the fans. Edit 2: Ian taught himself to play the flute. Tull is pronounced the same as hull, as in the hull of a boat. Love your reactions, new sub here.

Huh, I actually prefer this live Version. The guitar is way louder and ruffer. The energy is unbelievable. The tempo also does add to that. Alltogether it drives you with it and at times gives you the feeling that the Train might be about to Crash, so to speak. :D But to each his own, I suppose. 🤷‍♂️✌

Jethro Tull born sometime in the 1600s was an English agricultural pioneer from Berkshire who helped bring about the British Agricultural Revolution. He perfected a horse-drawn seed drill in 1700 that economically sowed the seeds in neat rows, and he later developed a horse-drawn hoe

'Old' dude thrashing the guitar is Martin Barre. Wild man on the flute/vocals is Ian Anderson. Both of them suffered from early MPB. This looks like it came from late 80s, band dates to late 60s. They're still around now, though in semi-retirement. "Tull" is pronounced like "gull".

Hello Mr. Video! Papa Brian here. 64 years old. Retired ER RN. Some history... Jethro Tull (pronounced like 'dull') is the name of the band. Ian Anderdon is the flute/English guitar player who wrote all of Tull's music. Classically trained, switched to Prog Rock, and blew the world away!!! Early 20s...I and three others waited in my Rambler (car) all night in unheated conditions in 14 degree weather to buy tickets for Tull. That's how you purchased tickets then. We had no internet. The concert was a month later. I saw him/them twice. Aqualung is a great album, but my favorites are Thick as a Brick and Songs from the Wood. Thick as a Brick is a concept/parody album and focuses on English folklore with lots of tongue-in-cheek remarks and lessons for all. Tull had the first live concert to be broadcasted worldwide back around 1975 from Madison Square Garden. Music back then was freaking great, eclectic, and knew no bounds. Nothing against today's canned music, but nothing can touch , Pink Floyd, Elton John, Rush, Yes, Moody Blues... and the list goes on and on and on. If you get the chance, watch a few episodes Rick Beato. You'll be hooked! Best
