A former employee for one of the biggest betting companies reveals the major flaws in the industry, from gambling addictions to money laundering. With over ten years of experience in betting, he has seen just how much the algorithms and systems are designed to encourage losers to lose more, and winners to stop winning. He describes how management has little care for customers, particularly when it comes to losing it all.
Informer is a series where we hear the anonymized confessions and insights of people on the inside of different industries, institutions and events.

I blamed anything and everything, but i kept on gambling, until one day i blamed myself and i managed to stop. it's been over 2 years now and im still free from gambling. My mother worked in a casino for 41 years. 1981-2020. She has definitely seen it all. You name It, she saw it and she never ever once even played 5 bucks on a slot machine. 41 years of stories in those casinos and how they operate. Everything this guy is saying is absolutely true. They are built to take your money. Period. The one good thing about growing up around casinos is I also have seen a lot and I also know how they operate. I never got into gambling. But I did try it one time. I remember one time I played a craps game with 300 bucks and walked out with 5k..! I remember the feeling I got. I felt on top of the world and I remember that whole week I couldn’t wait to go back and try it again . The next pay period I tried it again and I ended up losing my entire paycheck. I remember that was my car payment I lost too and man it was a shitty feeling..! That was over 15 years ago and since then I leaned my lesson. I’ve NEVER gambled again since and never will. But that addicting feeling I got I’ll never forget and I understand how that happens. My advice, stay away from the casinos. They’re built to take your money. Even the whole structure on how they’re constructed is designed to get you hooked. These days I’ll go to the restaurants and the live shows but I’ve never gambled since and never will

I gambled to make back money that I lost, manage to turn 500 bucks into 1800 making back the money I lost and then some(1000 dollars net win).I was so estatic, thinking all the things I could I do with that free money, I was waiting for my address to be validated to cash out and gambled 100 into another game. I lost the 100 and impulsively bet everything I had and lost. I'm so fucking mad at myself for not being patient and just calling it a day. idk what to do. I'm really on the fence between gambling another 2k to recup my losses or just cutting my loses before it gets out of hand.

It's why pros will go to different shops up and down the country (UK) in the hopes they get someone new who doesn't know the customer. If you think the gambling industry is honest, you're very naïve. This guy explained casinos sooo good. one of my good friends from college was a “advantage player” he counted cards, and almost never walked out of the casino in the negative..because of this he almost never got vip treatment and nothing was on the house. @FrankTaeger2021

@👑 Value At that point a smart Casino system will likely scan your cards over the video feed and calculate your odds ratio. A few statistical tests can be run every time you play a hand, increasing the accuracy of a bet whether your play style is natural or cheating. The more hands you play, the more likely your "odd" way of winning and losing will look. You would have to basically automate your losings through an RNG to beat that, which would most likely defeat the purpose of your winnings completely.

I'm a professional advantage player. I get comps. Rarely pay for rooms. But I have a team and we share rooms. We also don't stay at the same casino all the time. But I hate casinos. It's a job. I see the lives it destroys. What it does to people. Late nights you see the people sleeping on machines or the rampant drug use. I take as much out as I can and try to help people with the lucrative money outside of the casino. It's the devils house for sure. 99.99% of the players will lose in the long run and a good chunk will destroy their lives.
@nickmeyer238
@nickmeyer238 2 года назад
@👑 Value Yep yep. There are many ways to gain an edge but very few can make a living and they don't last forever. A good casino promotion if done right can be EV+. But you have to be willing to cash out and leave when the odds aren't in your favor. Some casinos have bad marketing departments and give out comps to new players that can make some easy money. Vegas used to be really good when they weren't all owned by a few big companies. Free $20 here. $20 there. Next casino. But yeah it's a job. It's not fun. It's a grind. If I'm not somewhat buzzed or don't have a podcast I don't even bother. I'd rather watch paint dry.

Gambling addiction is no joke, especially if you won a significant amount. You’re always looking for that rush, the excitement. If you have no self control you will lose it all. I met people who were betting their rent money, literally betting the last dollars and $5 they have for one more bet. You have to be in complete control when you gamble, emotion wise and impulse. Go with an amount that if you lose it, it won’t hurt you, never go to the atm, it’s a setup. I always tell people if you don’t gamble don’t start, it’s a bad habit to break.

Then, out of the blue, I was getting blocked by the gambling companies. One by one. For the time that I was able to execute my strategy I made practically nothing compared to the time I had invested in it. If you think you have a winning strategy and you’re not getting blocked, then you don’t have a winning strategy, you’ve at best been lucky.

I honestly thought I was gonna get nothing and when I took the ticket to the counter, the person gave me a weird look and asked if I planned on going back to the floor. I'm not a gambler but I do occasionally play poker locally (not in casinos or online). I'm curious to know why, in your example of that person taking mortgage out to fund his gambling addiction, you think that the problem lies with the company? Sure, I don't deny that gambling companies have their own agenda like maximizing profits and they're not angels by any means but when will people start taking personal responsibility for their actions? It baffles me when people like to divide themselves from "evil" humans while they fail to realize that they're a part of our species. Most humans try to maximize their gain, be it financial or emotional. It's incredibly selfish and ignorant to keep putting all of the blame on companies that are nothing more that a corporate gathering of people like you and I. Certainly, it's not the gambling industry that is causing the following human behaviour: - constant need of more money to fund your personal desires - constant day dreaming of a better life - unwillingness to educate oneself - lack of personal responsibility (its always someone else to blame for your misfortunes) Gambling industry must definitely be regulated to minimize money laundering and fraud but consumers also must educate themselves and take responsibility for their decisions. It's really hard to feel sorry for people that deliberately ruin their own lives just to start blaming someone else for their decision.

@xx-wp3mq
@xx-wp3mq 2 года назад
@@divx1001 The thing is, you don't know what pushes someone to make that first bet. Most people are aware of the house advantage, but it's mostly a case of chasing losses. The industry has some responsibility for its consumers, and most of the help is just a front. Online companies will target those individuals who have lost a massive amount of money and pray on the vulnerable; you probably can't empathise because I'm guessing you've not been in a position where you're having to bet more than you can afford to lose to put bread on the table - this is common with those impoverished, I don't particularly think it's okay to say they're the "blame" when the possibility of a better life is dangled in front of their face constantly through aggressive advertisement campaigns (it's more of a gray area, in my opinion). Humans are in-perfect by nature, and this emotion and desire to chase the unicorn can end up manifesting in even the most 'level-headed' individuals. In the case you pointed out - casinos should warn players that they're betting substantial amounts and take precautions to stop them from bankrupting themselves. Are you saying as a business owner the only reason you'd care about a consumer of your product committing suicide is the fact that you'd lose a customer? Yes. To some extent, people need to self-reflect on compulsive vices but this is the sort of consumer that casinos want - those who have nowhere else to turn, and they'll gut the vulnerable for all their worth. It's like putting a beer in front of an alcoholic and saying: "well, I didn't make him drink it, so it's entirely his fault".

The issue with gambling is both winners and losers turn out to lose. As a winner you never want to quite. And to be frank that's worst. Because it will cause you to believe more and engage deeper. And you can't win all the time. Matter of facts, statistics have proven no body wins upto 20% the time with Gambling. Please stop if you ever considered getting into it. Even as a hobby, I disagree. Casinos have the ability to manipulate a machine while you're playing it such as tightening up the machine where the house has a bigger advantage. You don't need to tell me that it's illegal in NV. The capability wouldn't be there of it wasn't going to be used. Another fact: The casinos are the funding source of the Gaming Commission in NV.

I work at a fairly newly opened casino in Ontario, Canada. This is literally the worst company I have ever worked for. When he said that all the staff is either indoctrinated or miserable and about working for a company that harms people, it really hit home. My job is technically "Dealer Assist" as I deal a live game at a table whilst patrons sit at machines nearby. I swear sometimes even I feel like the games I'm dealing feels like they have some sort of extra advantage for the house. And it's not even only people in my department, it's everybody from actual dealers, supervisors, housekeeping staff, food/beverage, guest services, every single department... like everyone is fucking miserable. The casino industry is so evil and morally corrupt.

I went on a trip with a family member who won the trip at work. It was paid for by a big company. Anyhow, at one point in the trip the company gave each person something like $50 to play at the hotel casino. I played slots for maybe like 20 minutes and doubled my money. I instantly cashed out, and went to my hotel room to lock the cash away in the safe. I came back and watched other people gamble and generally hung out. I'm not a gambler by any means and don't have an addictive personality. Once I won that money, I felt like I was ready to stop and use the money on better things that I could actually enjoy on the trip, like buying souvenirs to bring back. This was back in 2004. Gambling addition is a genuine struggle that is hard to kick once you're hooked. It started out from $10.00 per game session to $10.00 per spin. From $100.00 per month to $1000.00 per month. Started selling personal belongings, borrowed cash from anyone I ever came across. solely to chase the false ambition that I'd hit something big enough someday in hopes to recover the loses I have made thus far. It is so hard to break away from the clutches surrounding it. Tried everything i ever known. Been told many times before this but I chose to be bold. When I was about 12 I used to bet the neighborhood kid across the street $5 who would win the Monday Night Football game....went on a few weeks. When I lost I paid him, and when he lost he paid ...at first. After losing a couple times he decided he didn't want to pay me anymore and would rather try to intimidate and fight me over it instead of pay. My gambling career ended at 12. My other life lesson I took at a young age was working the grill at Sonic as a 16 year old making $5.15/hr and being told to work 2 hours at lunch, go home for a few hours then come back and work 2 hours at dinner tying up my whole Saturday for $20 in my pocket. Needless to say I went and got educated and take care of my $...oh and the dummy that wanted to fight me at 12 ended up in prison for much of his 20s. Personal life choices matter.

I am one of those gamblers with an elite status. Make sure I pay myself and bills 1st, use only my entertainment money to gamble. However I put myself at risk and learned the hard way as a young single before I got to this point. Even though I started out with a lack of interest in gambling, it's so easy to go a little crazy after a winning streak. Once you reach the highest tier and status you get a lot of free play, with enough luck don't need to spend your own money. All gamblers know that when you get greedy you lose, when you need the money you lose, when you look for a way out you lose or the odds are not usually in your favor. A few of us can run on luck or make big wins that usually we just break even and lose more than we win. My status is based on a lot of luck because I definitely didn't have 100,000 + to be playing with or throwing away. Once gambling becomes no fun, that's when a person should give up, the key is to not spend more than you can afford to lose. Easily at the top for life-ruining & dangerous addictions because it often remains hidden until a person is in financial ruin & debt & or their family is, I've met these people. I have experienced both sides of the spectrum, the lows and highs of what it means to be a gambler. A casino is similar to the Hotel California, ''you can check out anytime you like but you can never leave.'' When you make $4,000 in a couple of minutes and think that is nothing, you realize how the casino changes your perspective about the value of a dollar. You're winning goal goes up and up!

Couldn’t agree more about how it desensitises you to the value of money. I’m a gambling addict and only get paid £1000 a month, and recently I won £5000 on slots but wasn’t as happy as I should of been looking back now, probably because I knew all of that money would be gone by the end of the day (which it was) One of the worst things about gambling for me is winning big but then loosing all of the money you won, and just the horrible feeling of guilt and regret and thinking about what you could of done with the money and how you needed it. It’s the worst addiction
@LuxMeow
@LuxMeow 2 года назад
Yes, it's like a temporary insanity and then you do it all over again to make up for your loss but lose instead. I know what it's like to lose about 10gs at once and then win it back and lose it again. So at that point it doesn't even matter if you are lucky if you are walking away with nothing or less than you came in with. That's when you know you have to just do what you have to do to take a break and try to reset your mind from fast cash. The irony is if you put all that cash into a high interest savings account instead of the casino, you will eventually get out of debt. I guess it helps to know what drives your addiction in order to derail it. Make it as hard as possible to keep taking out money. Set a daily likit and ask that your bank work with you, you can also try self exclusion but I have literally seen people searching how to get around that. So yeah it's gotta be the most life ruining addiction to have because money is freedom and debt is a heavy weight on your shoulders but there is always a way out when you are ready. You may slip a bit before it gets better. Either way I totally get where you are coming from. It's a hell of it's own.

It’s trading one vice for another and there is absolutely a targeted customer. More importantly Gambling has been added as an addiction to the DSM.
