Last week we were hit with another east coast low which brought hundreds of mm of rain to the region! It's about the 3rd or 4th one we've had in a few months and it's been making gardening extremely difficult. This time, we had torrential rain for at least 24 hrs which resulted in quite a bit of flooding in the garden! Luckily, we did have too much damage and I'm sure the garden will bounce back over the coming weeks. It's amazing to see how much water went through the property and I'm slowly learning how to manage this for future years! Join me today for a walk through my backyard flower farm and permaculture gardens to see what they look like after all that rain!

Hey there!
Welcome to my channel, The Nature Patch where I like to share all things gardening, cooking, environmental science and flower farming in my Australian bushland backyard in south coast NSW.
My name is Robyn, an environmental scientist, and flower farmer. I have recently completed my PhD in understanding how people's wellbeing and their connection to nature is impacted by land use change but now I'm taking a break from research to pursue a dream of owning a flower farm. I've always loved gardening and nature and lately have been interested in growing my own organic food!
On this channel you'll find videos relating to garden tours, 'how to' videos, composting, soil health and how to start a flower farm.
I try to upload twice a week and I hope you enjoy!!
🤎 Filmed and edited on Yuin country. I acknowledge and pay respects to Traditional Owners of the land past, present and emerging. Always was, always will be Aboriginal land.

I’ve loved watching you grow Ooma’s garden while I start my own homestead. I’m a little sad that you are going to move, so I hope you are going to another amazing place and that you’ll continue to develop whatever land you’ll steward. I’ve learned so much from you on my own journey, thank you!

As a gardener in a high rainfall area with lots of clay I do two things. I raise everything I plant. I only dig the hole for the tree or shrub that is half the size needed and then build up soil into a mini raised bed. I then mulch it really well. I've not lost a shrub to being waterlogged since I started doing that. I have also dug a drainage trench to the edge of the block and it runs the water off to the drain next door.

Yep, I feel for you. I think Husky, and the Basin got more than Nowra or Berry. Moss Vale really looked waterlogged Friday

That was so much water! Eeep! You've done so well with how you've arranged things in a way that it doesn't all get swept away. Kudos. I was wanting to ask if you have any fruit trees and if so, how they're faring after this most recent deluge. We have heavy clay soil too and I hadn't realized that where I want to plant all the fruit trees used to be a creek bed. The local council diverted the water into pipes under ground several years back, but there's still a lot of water that collects in that area. I'm hoping to build up hugelkultur style garden beds to plant the trees in, hoping that this will be sufficient to prevent them from getting too waterlogged. Do you have any experience with this? I'm worried that all the trees will die from being too wet. So glad you're feeling so much better and the nausea is subsiding. Second trimester can be fantastic.
