Dr. Glaucomflecken is a physician whose RU-vid and TikTok videos have recently been EXPLODING in popularity.
So (naturally) I decided to see for myself what all the fuss is about!
In my new video, I react to some of Dr. Glaucomflecken’s content.
Can I relate to his unique medical humor?
Have I had any similar experiences as a doctor?
How is his comedy helping to educate viewers about important medical topics?

I like how you imply that he only goes after other specialties when he goes after ophthalmologists harder than any of the others. Like, seriously, the biggest running joke is about how useless ophthalmologists are in the majority of situations (especially without their loyal scribe, Jonathan)

LMAO. I love when the specialties react to his stereotype videos. This happened on my first day of my surgery rotation. GenSurg last procedure, said this would be a quickie, 90min, 2 hr max. The nurse and anesthesiologist begrudgingly agreed to stay…… 7 hours later, turned out to be one of the most complicated cases of the (young) attending’s career 😭😭

My ortho surgeon went in to take a 1 inch bone spur off my illiac crest. Turned into a softball size heterotopic cyst that required high dose radiation treatment. It was a long surgery and a long recovery. But it's been 16 years and it never came back . Much love to the surgical team!

Mannn, I was the cause for the second one just last month. I went in to get my gallbladder removed. What was supposed to be a simple 45-minute surgery took almost 5 hours due to major complications. When I came to, I asked what time it was. As soon as they said 7pm, I started apologizing for keeping everyone late and being a hassle 🤣 Most of my family is in medicine! I've had PLENTY of family members be late to things because something kept them at the hospital longer than planned.

It infuriates me when people have salaries that are less than minimum wage. It's inhumane. Also: if a person is worried about paying their basic bills, how much does that affect their ability to focus on me!!??
@denise331

That’s absolutely truth Savannah! Not to mention your nurse probably hasn’t eaten, gone to bathroom & could possibly be sick. Your doctor (& nurse since they force OT on us) could possibly be seeing you & making decisions with zero to minimal sleep. The ONE house keeper is forced to HURRY HURRY HURRY & clean that room the person with MRSA/cdiff etc just died in so they can fill the room with another person. Are we sure they were able to REALLY clean that room?? I wish the public could really see what is going on in hospitals. It’s the only way healthcare will improve is if the greed is cut out! Look up the salaries of everyone from nursing assistants to docs then compare to administration (maybe even look at profits of insurance companies & can’t leave out BIG pharma) that is where the problem lies. During covid we were wearing same dirty masks & gowns (if we had any) while CEOs are visiting their country home splashing around in one of their pools or using their gold toilet with a seat warmer. 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮

The least we could do as a society is say that anyone to go through that much training and on the job stress to protect our health can get their education for free. Debt for medical school is absolute insanity. I have a vested interest in the kid who wants to grow up to become a heart surgeon NOT ever wondering if he can afford the education that he would potentially use to _SAVE MY LIFE_ when my genetics from both sides of my family decide it's time to start clogging my arteries. If someone wants to learn to save lives, whether that's first aid training or a doctorate, it should be free. Don't we WANT more people with those skills in society? Why would we put barriers between them and getting those skills? When you think about it, it sounds downright suicidal.

@@denise331 I think the public I'd aware, but we are at the mercy of the corporate medical machine and rarely get our needs met due to difficulty getting appointments and the cost! I caught cdiff during a hospital stay as many do. DR and nurses are given too long shifts covering too many people...you barely see your doctor in the hospital and if something goes wrong overnight it takes forever for the night doctor to respond, and when they do they often don't help or don't understand, and they move on quickly. The residents are great but the more senior doctors act arrogant to patients and nurses. The food is trash, and if you have food allergies you end up with jello and broth the whole time. We know. It's awful. If Healthcare workers push themselves until they're unwell, what does that say about the dysfunction of the system? I hope it changes too.

Wow! I definitely appreciate surgeons more after having my gallbladder removed. It was one of those things that by itself may not have been so bad, but gallstones + fibromyalgia do not work well together. It was excruciatingly painful leading up to the surgery and basically instant relief (from my perspective). I know it’s fairly routine but I still appreciate the time and care they put into removing it laparoscopically. Thank you for making the world a better place.

My dad lives in a rural community, with the nearest less rural community being in N. Idaho, so, you can imagine. I live 6 hours away, came up at the behest of his family physician. Long story shorter, I had to take him to see a specialist in the slightly less rural city in Idaho. We get there, the specialist comes in, asks why he's there. I'm thinking, "He was referred to you by his primary care person, you don't know why he's here?" So my dad explains to the best of his ability. He goes back out, comes back in a few minutes later, literally starts ranting about how these rural doctors create these messes, then send patients to him to clean it up, complete with multiple swear words. It was an eye opening (and dismaying,) few minutes.

On my general surgery rotation in PA school, we had a day packed full of laparoscopic cholecystectomies. A fast one was about 30min, but they averaged an hour or an hour and a half. Our second to last one ended up being awful. Full of adhesions, ascites, just a mess. And we were in our lead vests. We kept those on for about 4hrs before the surgeon said we weren't going to do the imaging anymore and the circulating nurse came around and took them off us. About 2.5 hrs after that we finally finished. Got home well after midnight. I already knew going in that I wanted nothing to do with surgery, and that definitely cemented it.

I’m an 30yr ICU nurse. I spend $500/month medical insurance & still have over 10G in medical bills. Our healthcare system is a disaster. Since greed & capitalism has made it into the system it’s all going to shit. No one feels supported by our facilities/hospitals. Everyone docs/NP PA nurses and ancillary we are ALL working in an unsafe work environment making it impossible to give the best care & setting us up for failure. Healthcare could possibly be the only profession that self care & work life balance is VERY frowned upon! (ie we are expected to work when injured or sick including covid & other contagions; I have been denied a vacation for 2 yrs then they threaten I will lose my vaca time if I don’t use it…. Explain that to me?!?). They take money out of my paycheck for break time even though I’ve maybe taken 10 actual breaks(eating while charting or chewing while suctioning lungs is not a break) in 30yrs. Not to even mention the countless UTIs from not going to the bathroom. I even collapsed was sent to ER with a BP 78/37. Got a couple bags of IV fluids & was expected to return to work (they did dock my pay while in ER & sent me a big fat bill for their services which included the price of iv fluid 3 times what I pay for it from my vet that I administer to my pet when he needs it). I was also made to feel guilty for being in ER for 3 hrs. & wanting to go home. (Also at the facility I’m at IF you do manage to call out sick they use your vaca time over your sick time but can’t use sick time for vaca which most likely won’t get either. All of this ultimately affects patient care. We suffer moral injury for being unable to do our jobs & give the best care possible all due to greed (from facility itself or insurance & big pharma etc). Your doctor isn’t even allowed to be a doctor. It’s your insurance company that decides what THEY think you need by denying to pay for services. DO NOT join the healthcare industry unless you enjoy sadistic torture. It hasn’t always been this way but I doubt it will ever be a safe profession again. I’m planning my escape. I don’t go to the doctor. I quit taking all my medications etc just to avoid more expenses. I think I’ve become suicidal. I want to help people but I’m human too & I get sick but it has been made very clear that I am not important. I now wear a DNR sticker on my badge & drivers license. There is even a note in my car to alert EMS that I am not to be taken to any emergency dept in case I was in a car accident. I doubt they would be able to honor that but my HCP has strict instructions to drag my ass out of the hospital as fast as they can even if they have to rip an ETT out of my mouth. I refuse to support the greed any longer. Just this week I canceled my health insurance because I am so disgusted with the situation & refuse to be a financial victim of healthcare greed. I certainly do not recommend stopping current medical treatments or seeking health care. This is just my actions to avoid medical debt. (NOPE NOT BITTER AT ALL😂)

We made $6/hr cleaning dorm rooms at our university in 2006 and one of my co-workers was definitely always high on something or other. He really liked mescalin. @katydid5088 Год назад
@@LorianandLothric No work life balance. Long skills training high debt ratios and therefore no freedom to move whenever or wherever you want until AFTER 12 years of school. Family medicine puts in huge hours charting without pay and in rural communities you're on call even if you have volunteer EMS services. That's not to mention fighting the bureaucracy of Gov't and big business forcing people to get care 100's of miles away in a large city or constantly fighting insurance for things you are absolutely sure the patient needs. If they thought the minor medical care that insurance would cover was going to work (preapproved treatment paths as dictated by insurance) they would have used it already. Even if the kids are academically successful already, all of that work minus even the potential of realizing how much debt they will carry, means I can see why they didn't do it. I bounced around medical staff jobs before deciding healthcare in any capacity other than volunteering on my schedule was not worth it. Nursing still has the best ROI considering the amount of time you spend in school but the interpersonal and management criteria made my time as a peon seem hellish. I didn't see the attitude change when nurses or doctors were more senior and far more educated than the sales reps and business majors dictating patient treatment. My thoughts now are that the nationalized NHS system doesn't really work and something like a single payer Swedish/Norwegian model (or Japan) would work best. That's to say nothing of farming,school, and transportation infrastructure reforms that would make chronic health conditions go down. It would require good leadership willing to commit to all aspects of legislation.

There are empirical methodologies to help form a really strong estimation of time and resource costs, but most of us just seriously 'wing it' instead.

@PhrontDoor, now you made me curious. I presume these methodologies are related to project management. What are they called, please?
@PhrontDoor
@PhrontDoor Год назад
@@fredericapanon207 Oh, there are SURGICAL versions of the "COCO models" (for procedural software design estimation models) as "The process of estimating the cost of surgery: Providing a practical framework for surgeons" or "Estimation of Surgical Costs Using a Prediction Scoring System" But I haven't seen a 'named' scoring system. Most are named after the 'first' author in a study.

Is it true that doctors become so used to being broke for a long time from med school to residency that when they finally get paid as a specialist they splurge the money? Lol

A Urogynecologist - A doctor who couldn't match into Urology but who still wanted to be a surgeon so went into OBGYN to never practice actual obstetrics or gynecology - instead only performing elective urologic procedures that only wealthy women (or those with great insurance) can afford... while also never working on weekends.

so sad you're not using neutral pronouns or both like surgeon + he or she/ his or her. Or at least alternate- it's not all boys club here-

He was referring to the male actor (Flannery) playing a male surgeon. Was he supposed to refer to the clearly male-identifying person as she/her and he/him?

I gave your video a like whenever I first started watching although I'm going to have to remove it because of your innate sexism by saying his when referring to the surgeon I know that the individual doing the sketches is a guy however you're talking about surgeons in general and not just the individual known on social media as Dr Gokenflickum. Therefore the innate sexism behind that comment is resulting in me leaving this hopefully so that you will try and avoid such mistakes in the future I know this comment will technically add to your engagement but at least me taking away the like on the video will counterbalance that.

Dalton: thanks for your comments. Dr. Rich is a practitioner in the only surgical speciality that has more females than males. The majority of his mentors have been women. Dr. Rich and our channel are unequivocally not innately sexist. As you mentioned, Dr. glaucomfleken is a male who identifies as a male, and uses he/him pronouns. It would be sexist and inappropriate for us to refer to him as a her/she against his preference. As you can see in our videos with female Surgeon Dr. Erinn Myers we also appropriately refer to her as she/her. When people are maniacally obsessed with finding sexism in the world, they can project their biases onto others even when it doesn't exist.

@@DoctorRich changing the language about it and just removing the gender from the conversation is key to changing that. When you talk about it being a boys club or something like that, it creates a mental barrier for those who are younger and still deciding what to do with their life. Yes do go out and encourage young women to join the field, and do mention that currently is is more dominated by males although mention that yall are trying to change that.

@@dalton6173 thanks for the clarification. Hopefully you can do a better job supporting those channels that support women's health.
