For a long time, I didn't approach my voice in the right way. My range was trapped, I strained a lot and got tired quickly... And my voice coaches didn't help me. In fact, their methods and advice only discouraged me.
It wasn't until I channeled that discouragement and started listening to the greatest Rock vocalist of all time in an entirely different light and in a new way that I was able to have incredible breakthroughs in both range and power. Let my journey light your way!

Awesome!!! Awesome!!! Awesome!! That's an amazing story!!!! I know from experiencing breakthroughs in my own voice because of your amazing courses. I love your voice, and when I heard you sing songs from the greatest singers, yet I was loving your versions even more, still do, and then sharing how you got there, and how to bring out my own vocal discoveries through tonal dynamic resonance , and character. Wow! It changed everything!!! You're amazing Chris!! You are the greatest in my eyes vocally and as a vocal coach/teacher/instructor. I say that honestly from experiencing it myself. Thank you!!!!

Hey Chris, I’ve had plenty of people in the past tell me to stick with my comfortable, “natural” range(E2-E4). But I didn’t want that. I wanted to be able to sing my rock songs. Now with a lot of experimentation and your videos I can now sing up to F5 with tons of different characters all through out my voice.

When I was 16 I played the part of Danny Zuko in a high school production of Grease. The Musical Director for that production was the music teacher, Amanda Bowater. She was all about getting us cast members to expand our range, and sing through our limitations. She was the person who first taught me about "chest" voice, and "head" voice, and she also taught me about mixed voice, although she used to informally call it "throat" voice, which IMO is actually a better way to think of it for a number of reasons. Although that musical was only a few months out of my life, her advice was always in the back of my mind from then on, so I always believed it was possible to achieve the "rocky" falsetto, and mixed sounds of Axl Rose, Robert Plant, and Chris Cornell, to name but a few. Also, she made it clear that very few people have a natural tendency to sing that way, and most people have to learn how to make it sound good, and then work at it from then on, because it takes practice, BUT anybody can get better at it WITH practice. So I want to say two things to the world at large: 1: ANYONE can learn to do this, it just takes PRACTICE. 2: God bless Mandy Bowater.

You have the best approach to teaching and singing rock music. In my early 20's (20 years ago) my first vocal coach came at me with the same approach as you deliver. It started with him testing me to see what kind of silly and weird sounds I could make with my voice without it hurting my throat. I learned very quickly that a lot of what people hear on recordings is an illusion because of reverb, delay, gain and compressors. He was able to "imitate" a lot of good vocalists like Robert Plant and all the way down to Louie Armstrong. I'd go see his band perform every Tuesday night for what I took as "free" lessons. I learned a lot over a two year period with him. He drove it home that baritones are great rock vocalists and most of the best of em are. Hearing him sing rocks song without a mic right in front of me in his studio really opened up to me what it sounds like without smoke n mirrors. I couldn't grasp conservatory methods of trying to teach me to sing properly. They were limiting to say the least. Thank you for delivering these videos to us. Keep em coming!!

I relate so much to this story. But my breakthrough was you, I watched one of your videos on mixed voice and my jaw dropped (and the same happened to every musician I showed your videos to). I always heard the same "he is a tenor, you are a baritone" or "that require years and YEARS of practice to slowly get to those notes". After watching a few MINUTES of your video I could reach notes one octave higher than I thought possible to me. It was mind-blowing, a revelation. It felt like finding a musical instrument hidden in a cupboard that had been in front of me my whole life but I didn't know I could open. You are amazing. Thank you for your videos!

The one vocal coach I had immediately classified me as a Bass. Admittedly, in the prior year, I had discovered Home Free and was working to match Tim Foust. I extended my low end from a D2 to Bb1. But I still love to sing Hard Rock, Grunge, etc. The day she told me I was "being greedy" for attempting a G4, I was done with her. Not to mention my distain for singing scales. Using distorted Head and/or Falsetto, I could always imitate the SOUND of Cornell, Halford, Brian Johnson, etc, but I didn't have the power they had. Like your discovery of Cornell, my muse has been Myles Kennedy and Alter Bridge. In the last year, I've discovered my Mix and am regularly (with little to no tension) getting up to B4 and even C5 before switching to Head and Reinforced Falsetto, which gets me to A5. Not too bad for "a Bass". 😉 I think part of my success has been switching to clean vocals, but more so by imitating Myles' tone. 👍🏽😎

Chris, may I say for me, so much of high notes or singing high tessitura songs is training with lack of fear and a relentless, unwavering attitude. You must believe those notes are available or will one day be available. Some vocals I have realized are just better sounding in my voice when I drop them a half step. That friggin' half step can make such a difference (up or down). Sometimes the half step down is just temporary, but you don't realize it. I'm always playing with half steps....lol!!

For some reason, I've always been able to sing. I started playing piano by ear at four years old. I just sat down at the family piano one day and started banging out Beatles melodies. My parents were quite shocked to say the least. Then, when I started playing keyboards in a rock band in my late teens, I was asked to sing. So I sang. No problem. It's weird. Once I started my career as a software engineer I gave up keyboards and music altogether. Since retiring, I've started singing again. Singing to backing tracks. I love it. We go to karaoke clubs. That's how I'm re-living my band days. But yeah, you're spot on with the vocal strategies. I liken it to people who do voice impersonations. Rich Little. Dana Carvey. You experiment with sounds using your voice. You use your voice in fun ways outside of your normal speaking range. Exactly what you teach. Cheers!

Yes Chris! I have recently been singing Disney villain cover songs and I am able to hit higher notes and even achieve curtain vocal distortion! By embodying some OTHER character voice, I am not afraid to go to wired or silly places that actually allow me to sing higher and with more power. This is because it's only a "character" voice and not my "real" voice.

All my favorite singers don't mess up live, so I'm a perfectionist lol. But surprisingly, it's grunge and nu metal that helped me improve my voice, and later on progressive metal and symphonic metal. And now, belive it or not, kpop and jpop are helping me with higher notes and lighter tones for softer songs. So far I have a 2 octaves range (D3-G5) but I'll try to reach a C6 and a C3, just for the fun of it.

It's funny because it happened to me recently. I'm an average baritone that couldn't push beyond A4 in full voice on a very good day then I participated into an amateur choir that really triggered in me what I've always suspected about Chris Cornell's singing hitting high notes on a whim as a baritone. When I started to think my body as an air conductor going right from my diaphragm pushing the air out of my mouth rather than forcing my throat to emit sounds, something clicks to reach C5 to F5 without straining much. I was like "Wow so that is how Cornell was doing it with such absolute control!". It's like I unlock an upper range above my natural baritone voice that sounded like a tenor's natural range. It's not painful like when you're forcing your throat because you're relaxed and the air is just merely circulating through you. You think yourself like an air control button that controls the amount of air necessary to produce whateve note then modulates to attain a certain pitch that you interiorize priorhands in anticipation, now I work trying to nab that sensation and blend that mixed voice naturally so I can be able to switch with ease between my chest and mixed voices. Adding some grit too. It's like trying to tame an elusive unicorn that you witnessed one day. OMG it exists and it was within me all this time!

My vocal coach that I went to a couple of times restrained me to the point of blocking my voice from expanding. You showed me the approach of "letting voice do stuff, not making voice do stuff" and it was just groundbreaking. From the point of forcing my voice through countless hours of intervals and being frustrated to the point of just going with the flow and feel. For example your warm up video that I "sing" along with probably 4 or 5 times a week.. it's just great. Got to work with some amazing singers, including some you would know of. They might say something helpful here and there, but I never approached it like learning guitar, bass, keys, drums... all of which I learned to play. by experimenting, listening, approaching with confidence. I’ve watched your vids but still don’t really have a grasp on whether my technique is correct or not. A very inspirational story, Chris. I think though your approach isn’t a one all be all one too do. Having those foundational warmups or exercises that may seem limiting or boring in conjunction with what you are saying would be more ideal given my own background to a degree. Obviously everyone will have a different approach and may not have hit any walls for any of this to apply. In general though I do believe that experimenting with your voice or any instrument for that matter is one of the best ways to see what you are capable of and maybe finding new techniques and approaches to what you already know.

I remember hearing 2 guy's shouting at each other in a traffic situation, it was 'f'you' and the other guy replied, 'no..f'YOU!' I never forgot it because they were so stressed their voices were really high way beyond mixed voice but certainly loud. Don't suppose either of them were singers but I aways default back to mimicking their exchange when I feel myself straining a bit, the placement then alters slightly and the strain disappears.

I've had a theory there is a direct correlation between a singer's range and how many annoying sounds they have made in their lifetime. Someone like Mike Patton being a prime example of someone that obviously makes endless noises and has a huge range probably as a result. Your channel really reinforced the theory more so than anything else so far with all of your videos of dying cats and whatnot.

You have talked about these issues already I think, and it's true that if you don't try you will never know where can you get, maybe even somewhere else you had not thought before... Btw... I think now, maybe I change my mind later on, I don't know, that there is a compromise between technique and emotion and rawness, and that sometimes you have to accept a little bit of soreness, dryness, not exactly pain, but to have some discomfort in order to achieve the raw emotion... Maybe, I don't know...

Skele, also check out Geoff Tate's range in Queensryche during the 1980s. The albums would be "Warning", "Rage for Order" and "Operation Mindcrime" (I think their first album from '82 is referred to as "the EP" and is titled "Queensryche", but it is some seriously screamy weird 80's metal stuff). I'd probably go right to the song "Take Hold of the Flame" and then check out the vocal weirdness that is all over "Rage for Order" (which is a WEIRD album!), and then of course, "Operation Mindcrime"... which is probably where you should start since it is slightly less weird than the earlier stuff! :P

@@StratMatt777 I listened the hell out of Queensryche in the 80's and even occasionally now. They're more prog than rock and his vocals were gorgeous prog rock.

Don't be aftaid of E5, Jackie Wilson in the 60's hits one in his classic (Your Love Keeps Lifting me) Higher and Higher. Luckily for us it's on an 'Ee' vowel, but it's not that hard if you really relax and super-focus on directing it to your nasal resonance with a light air stream.

Hey Chris, I needed to hear this today. This is inspiring! Hearing about how you were told what you were told and how you found a way to do what you wanted anyway...that's great. I want to expand my chest voice range considerably - I have that same G4 ceiling! Mixed voice is useful but there's no substitute for the fullness of chest voice. I hear guys hitting A sharp 4s and B4s with chest. Where there's a will there's a way! Do you have a video that specifically covers expanding chest voice?

Sang Like a Stone in Am with a new buddy of mine last week… and later on he said, “Well, you’re a Tenor so I can’t hit the same notes.” But.. I had the deeper, fuller voice. Played him your video on baritones and it blew his mind. Cause let’s face it… belting out the Black Hole Sun refrain is far more fun than meandering through Folsom Prison Blues on the acoustic all night.

If you are stuck at a note, try overshooting the note. My passaggio is around G4-A4, and I went for power metal out of the bat. I can sing pretty high, but my voice still struggles around G4-A4. However, if I climbed higher and higher instead of trying out crazy power metal singers, I may have been stuck at G4-A4.

Yep, this works well! That's essentially what you hear Cornell doing in Incessant Mace or some of those other earlier songs. It's an amazing tool!

Good stuff Chris. I have always mimicked singers, styles and for me if your covering a song it sounds odd to do it with your own voice. That has helped me be able to use the vocal techniques from different genres and playing covers of all kinds for over 22 years, im getting to use the flavors in my own music. Question can you do a pdf of the warm up techniques spencer used on your video course? Id glady donate for that. That helped my voice a ton but i cant afford the course lol. Love your content and approach to teaching😎

College really is just a massive waste of time and money, run by embittered and limited ideologues. With the internet - and generous, enthusiastic people like you Chris - we really don't need them anymore.

I think everyone should pick a super cartoony character voice and sing the song they are having turbel with. Let the character make the mistake, rather then you.
