Made two with my buddy for our high school physics project first semester of senior year, then a bow for the second semester. These things can be menacing. An atlatl is a very effective tool in the right hands. Learning how to use it was a challenge but it’s definitely a good time. Also, you do not throw it “like a baseball.” It’s a lot more of a refined movement than that. It’s thrown slightly to the side and at a bit of an angle. Throwing it directly over your head will result in a poor throw at best and a spear in the ground or the guy next to you at worst.
At all at all, and they are fun and can be very deadly even against armor (European armor of the time) the Azteca used large amounts of cotton padding for armor against them. But at 100 yards they can peirce plate armor.
“A _little bit more_ “?!? That third ‘arm’ segment increased your throwing ability _exponentially._ Consider how far can you throw using just your shoulder? … from your elbow? … from your wrist? …using your hand and fingers?? Now, step that up by the same factor… _Atlatl!_
It was developed across the world, regardless of cultural interaction. That means the Mayans, the Aboriginals, and the Europeans all developed it without ever meeting.
