All i know is , i watched it on cable back in the early 90s , lazy afternoon with nothing else to do , and i was mesmerized , didn't read any reviews , had no idea about the drama surrounding it , just watched it pure and without bias , and i had an immense amount of fun with it
@@TemperedMedia we probably would've gotten a more action and story based/character driven film with a higher focus on the directoral vision that had next to nothing to do with the games, but would've made for a unique sci-fi-punk film that would've probably flopped regardless, but would've been better remembered as a genuinely unique/odd take on the source material rather than being seen as a joke that's best enjoyment is watching it ironically. or smth like that idk.
Yeah, Mark has been through a lot, he's watched the garbage of the garbage, even the same movie 3times plus the researching, just to entertain us and keep the channel, salute!
@@joeberger3441 oh. Well, I'd still like to see a WMWM circa 2023 version. While still good, Mark then is not the new and improved Mark we have now. Unlike Neal Breen, Mark has learned from his past work, improved, and solidified his craft. Plus, that one probably didn't start with the patented (I assume) introduction with the emphatic "TO the show," and Super Mario really warrants such an introduction. (But also, thank you for letting me know. I will check it out! 👍🏻)
I definitely agree on the whole voice acting rant! As a fan of Japanese anime, YOU HAVE TO PICK THE RIGHT AND PERFECT VOICE TO SUIT THE CHARCTER! Don't pick a celerity just because they're "famous." It's all about vocal delivery. Not the person themselves.
If you want to be sad, look up the actor who played Lucas in The Wizard and see what he's known for today. He really should have kept that Power Glove to himself.
@@notavailable9919I’m no expert, but I think there’s still a huge chunk of viewers who place more value on quantity than quality. And that’s a shame. Not only has Mark been doing this since 2011 (if not longer), he’s mentioned several times that RU-vid is not his only job.
If you pay him enough canadian dollars and send him a picture of your bee whole he'll give you his perspective on that too. I can tell you're exactly the kind of fella that would pay any amount of money to see your own bee whole through mark's perspective.
Roland Joffe was one of the most acclaimed director with The killing field and The mission (Palme d’or at the Cannes festival). He must have been on drugs to proceed with such a doom project. His name was mud after that. It shows how fast you can go downhill-wood
His mom rights his scripps and he lives in his stepdad's bassment. U just a silly fan if you think this joker puts any effort into this!! Dude's a dud... aint got no job and still... STILL can't keep that bee whole clean. Okay it's loose fine but aint no reeson that bee whole should be so philthy son!! NO reeson at all boy!!
The new Mario Movie wasn’t a cinematic masterpiece by general movie standards. But one thing I believe every critic of the Mario Movie completely misses is, “Did the movie understand the assignment?” The Mario Movie was a full on celebration of Mario and some of Nintendo’s earliest IPs, as well as having just the plot needed to make a movie out of. It also helped that they kind of gamified the Easter eggs in the movie as well. So a videogame movie breaking out the mold of trying to just be some blockbuster movie to compare to Citizen Cain or something, they made a videogame movie that was completely not only afraid to BE the videogame, but also was a game in itself. Taking the wide genre, it’s inspired from, into the Theatre. The audience for Mario wanted to see Platforming. They wanted to see familiar block behavior when the characters interact with them. Laugh at the self-inflection about “why am I so familiar with what is going on there, and yeah, those floating bricks would seem weird?” It understood the assignment. It used the familiarity of the audience, for the Wild wacky and weird they’ve grown comfortable with, and shined a mirror on it to make the audience smile. Not only at the movie, but at themselves. I think it took advantage of timing, and that the majority of the audience now plays videogames, compared to the past. And the adults who waited like 30+ years for the movie they wanted, as a kid, to finally come out. Yeah. A movie can be great in itself and be successful, it can also be one that truly understands the assignment and be successful. I think we all need to answer the question, one which I would love people to try to discuss and come up with an answer. What do you think the people at large want from a videogame movie? Particularly from videogames that don’t try to be movie-like in the first place? Ones that, in their source material, simply go wacky for the pure sense of wonder and fun, building their world or universe off it?
I was kinda worried about your take on this movie because i genuinely enjoyed it for the same “better than my low expectations” reason that you did. But you actually broke this review down and nailed so many things I didn’t notice, like Seth Rogan’s phoned in performance compared to far more talented voice actors. This is why I religiously watch this channel.
At least Chris Pratt TRIED. Jack Black was absolutely excellent as Bowser. He’s got some voice work under his belt already and you could just tell he was having so much fun with the role. And you couldn’t tell it was him!
Ah, The Wizard. One of the cinema greats. Jenny Lewis screaming "He touched my breasts!" was just defining hilarity. Thanks, 80s/90s, and your weird outlook on everything always.
I was one of those Sega Kids back in the days and even I was hyped for that Movie. Just because it was based of a Video Game. It felt like my favourite hobby would go to the next level.
My step dad always told me the same thing!! Turned out to just be a bunch of sex crimes though. The "next level" for him turned out to be a prison. Now who knows what's happening to his bee whole in the showers on a regular basis... he's probably having the time of his life.
I grew up with cartoons with Arnold Stang as Top Cat, etc. And, while many actors do good voice acting, I miss the special touches only voice actors I feel have extra nuance
Thank you for recognizing voice actors! Also I want to know who was playing Street Fighter and saw Bison and thought, "This guy reminds me of Gomez Addams."
It is sad that star power did not save the 1993 film from failure. Dennis Hopper, Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo, Samantha Mathis and Fisher Stevens were all excellent and well known actors at the time. 🙃
There's probably someone out there who saw the old Mario Bros movie blind, without ever seeing the game somehow, and loved it. Then when they went to go play the game, they were pissed that it was nothing like the movie.
I saw the old mario movie once back in the day (as a young kid), and had no idea what was going on. Never bothered to sit and watch it again, but I recall being so lost and confused and wondering why mario wasn't in it.
I exactly have the same opinion of this movie as Mark: not groundbreaking, but delivered on expectations, no matter as a NES era fan or modern one. The biggest repproach I'd have is how Illumination mostly used Magikoopa as comic relief and then kind of forgot about him along the way and how they got Luigi jailed in Bowser's fortress early on, not really giving him time to develop his character from pushover to badass. But it was an engaging watch in the action department, for sure.
I love the original SMB movie, just how notorious it has become over the years. The stories behind it's production are absolutely legendary in the annals of modern media. Honestly, if i could make any movie, I'd make a mockumentary about the making of the original Super Mario Bros movie. Cast stand-ins for all the players involved, and interlace interviews with actual stars and staff, esp. John Leguizamo, since both Hopkins and Hopper are no longer with us.
I saw the original SMB movie when it hit theaters and holy cow did that movie spoil any chances for enjoyment, it was constant annoyance about how almost any of it could possibly relate to the game characters. There were little bits here and there, but it really showed how confused everything was, just baffling. It's also one of the reasons I haven't seen the 2023 version, the 1993 version was really that bad that it spoiled any future movies, regardless of whether they're any good.
I remember this movie well from back in the day and just being confused that Dennis Hopper was Bowser and not looking like a turtle and being terrified of the koopa de-evolution scene.
If I was only aloud to give one problem with the 1993 film, even as difficult as that may sound, I could do it. The one biggest problem with it is that it does not know or show where it goes. It looks like an adult film but does not go there. It is expected to be a kids’ film but does not go there. It is advertised as a video game film but goes way far away from that. It is introduced as a dinosaur story but is humanoid. Many think that Nintendo endorsed it. Well, they kinda just said, “Whatever. We won’t help or even care.” There you have it. The 1993 film was unique because it was built to be entertaining with no destination whatsoever. 😉
I worked in the gaming industry and one of the hardest parts is trying to secure an IP to develop a game. It is interesting to see the reverse; when the gaming giant is the owner of the IP and another industry wants to work with it. On a completely different note, I think I saw the Mario movie back in the 90s but I cannot remember well. I do remember Street Fighter and that was such a mess. It made me so annoyed 😂 that I remember.
The Double Dragon movie was a laughable failure too, which is sad. At one point this franchise was the invincible n°1 of its genre, before being dethroned by Streets of Rage and Final Fight. The flick didn't help DD's relevancy
"I don't do voices. If you want me to be in this movie than it's going to sound like me and that's it." Why would anyone fight so hard to have Seth Rogan in their movie? Why can't everyone be like Robin Williams and genuinely care about doing a good job for the characters instead of relying on star power?
Mark, this was an unprecedented surprise. Thank you for your thoughts on this, and look forward to your videos in the future. Also, I’d totally watch a movie with Mark, Kung Pow style lol
Over the past few years Mark's been mixing in more traditional reviews of long-running franchises when a new installment comes out (Halloween, Matrix, Star Wars, Jurassic World, etc.). He also did a Super Mario Bros review a long time ago; I think it's one of his first videos
Hey Mark, love your channel, and all the work you do to make your vids great! Especially the bits where are you? Green screen yourself into the movies 😂 keep up the great work, and know you are appreciated by many!
It’s insane to think that Nintendo, a company thats known to jealously guard its most important IP, would be so hands off and lackadaisical about its first film. Just mind blowing.
Well there apparently were 2 other life-action Super Mario Brothers movies in the 1990s which often get ignored as Nintendo did get involved with them and even bought up the distribution rights.
Both films are awful but at least the earlier one tried to be different and creative; the latest film is ball-achingly soulless, corporate and creatively bankrupt.
I’m proud to say that I am an O.G. “Original Gamer” I started with Atari as a kid and moved through just about every system as I grew up. Nintendo, Super Nintendo, sega genesis, sega CD, Atari jaguar, Dreamcast, PlayStation, Xbox, back to PlayStation, and prolly one or two more systems I forgot. Now I’m sitting here waiting for AC mirage to come out.
Bro? BROOO!! Did you completely miss the fact Lance Henrickson is the King? Thats weird considering he's a staple of your favorite films. Also my favorite story is that Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo realized they were making shit and just started drinking on set. But I think thats common knowledge now.
About the casting of movie stars vs voice actors, two simple solutions: - Cynical for cynical, if movie studios want to have famous movie stars do the promotion, just pay them to do the promotion and keep them out of the movie (OK, maybe just give them small roles). - Valorise the voice actors. Put something like "with legendary voice actor Nancy Cartwright", make them do the promotion of the movie (and don't tell me that an interview with a voice actor who can make the voices of multiple famous characters on camera is less interesting than having Chris Pratt regurgitating promotional talking points.
Funny enough, they were in talks for magnum don himself Danny DeVito to play Mario and Arnold Schwarzenegger to play Bowser aka King Koopa in the film originally. That would’ve knocked my socks and I would’ve died laughing if that became reality. I would’ve given 4 stars hands down just for that casting.
I didn't love the new Mario flick but I thought Keegan key was great. I would have never guessed it was him. I didn't think anyone did a bad job with voice acting but the story itself was just kinda boring. The animation was great though.
3:48 Yea I don't think this is correct - that, or it's a USA specific thing. I don't know anyone who watched the movie because hey, Chris Pratt voiced the main character in it. It's a Super Mario movie - people watch it because it's Super Mario. These movies are literally all dubs. The english dub is likely the worst because it's the one that didn't use voice actors for it. I don't think it has been less successful in non-english countries because of a lack of starpower in the voice acting either. The whole "it's about starpower" thing is pretty much baseless for animated movies. It's like saying Dragonball Super would have more views if Robert Downey Jr. voices Son Goku... let's say I'd disagree with that :v Bottom line: most people only care about the voice being good. Not whose voice it is. If a well-received character has always been linked to the same voice actor, naturally people would prefer that same voice actor always do the voice - another example: David Hayter vs Kiefer Sutherland as Solid Snake. People wanted David Hayter cause he was Snake the whole time.
Can’t they just insert big stars to do cameos and use voice actors to star? I could see Tom Hanks appearing on late night talk shows with the gimmick, “I had a brief time to play an incredible character. Dolly Parton, too.” Etc. I know, they made their billions so their formula works.(Not necessarily artistically)
When they said a kids movie (the new one) they meant 4 year old kids.. Holy crap it's barely a film. Just a collection of beautifully animated vignettes of recognizable things. I hate it but that's just imo and clearly not the popular one.
Of course Seth Rogen says he's not going to put any effort into a project he's lucky enough to be approached about. He hasn't put any effort into anything but arguing with smarter people on Twitter since slightly after Pineapple Express.
Excellent video! Personally, I was an Atari 64 abuser, who never played Mario Bro's, never watched the original Mario's movie, and has no intention of seeing the latest, and I can only say thanks for the really interesting look into the intersection of movies and gaming back in the lost innocence of the '80's and 90's!
"TECHNICALLY the first Mario Brothers movie was the highest-grossing Mario Brothers movie"... Mark, Marek, Markoschek... that's like saying the Titanic was the most technically advanced submarine of its day LOL Awesome video, brother. Keep them coming!!!
Thr biggest problem with the '93 movie was the goombas with the tiny heads, and The Deacon as Koopa, not because he wasnt a fantastic actor, but because he does NOT look like a big spikey toitle.
Billy West _did_ do the voice of Invader Zim, but only for the pilot episode. There used to be a copy of it on youtube (now there's just "Invader ZIM Official Pilot with Audio Commentary" where they mention him). As much as I love Billy, they made the right choice giving the role to Horvitz.
I must be the only being on Earth that loves the ‘93 Super Mario Bros. movie since it’s release. I completely understood that the source material back then was just not enough so they had to make its own version of SMB story, atmosphere, etc. and I accepted it and enjoyed it all the way…even though it was a nightmare for everyone that were involved.
I have to recommend 2012 Ice Age. I just watched this and thought of you during the whole film.I read the comments and hahahahaha.I even posted I was recommending it to you!
One of the biggest issues i see nowadays with the "93 film, is that it doesnt look like Mario and Luigi are brothers, like, at fkn all. Looks more like "the super mario step father and step son" what with their significant age gap and vastly different physical traits. Ah well. As a youngster, i liked it. Id like to watch it again now that im 36 and its been probably 30 years since ive seen it.
The Donkey Kong sounds like a Wreck it Ralph rip off. I haven’t seen this movie yet, but yeah Chris Pratt seems like a terrible choice. I really like him as an actor, but plain vanilla dude bro is kind of his thing… And I don’t think Mario would sound like a plain vanilla dude bro.
IS King Koopa supposed to huff Nitros Oxide and close his eyes and let go of the wheel going 90 miles an hour and yell " Don't you F****ing look at me!" Oh wait that was Blue Velvet ...... come to think of it what is he doing in a kids movie. I didn't know Blade runner was a kid's movie..... it's like they never even saw the video game. Its more like how the majority of the episodes of star Trek were written to reuse props costumes and sets from other tv shows and movies. today it's going to be gangsters from the 30's tomorrow they are in the wild west, next week its sherlock homes and robin hood.
I want a 3D-CG version of Legend of Zelda. I can see that working really well. It could be a much darker vision than Sonic or Mario, and marketed more towards adults who played the original games.
In Japan, it's the reverse for voice actors: they're considered as stars in their own right, even having side careers as pop idols. It's so strange to me why the same profession is so dismissed in the west. Their delivery is the heart and soul of an animated project, yet the industry sees it as a second fiddle function forever. You can perfectly see how it matters in the later seasons of the Real GhostBusters, as Lorenzo Music no longer voices Venkman. It was one of the many reasons for this cartoon's downfall...
You would have literally had people stabbing their eardrums in the first 5 minutes of the movie if they had to hear Charles Martinet speak continuously for 90 minutes.
@@lutherheggs451 Not to forget Charles Martinet isn't exactly a youth anymore (almost 70 as of now), so asking a peppy performance out of him for the length of a feature movie would be quite unrealistic, anyway. Imagine all the missed takes the poor man would also have to endure...
Voice Actors aren't abused animals in the West, that's purely a falsity put into place by said voice actors to try and get everyone to feel bad for them. Just because they aren't as widely recognized as live-action Movie/TV stars, does NOT mean they are not treated well or are played off. In fact, in recent years, some big Voice Actors have been showing just how greedy they are. Bayonetta's original VA is a great example, or how about Bender's VA? Literally rallying the anger in fans to try and get more of a paycheck. It's insanity when voice actors get to sit inside an air conditioned studio for usually 1-2 weeks TOPS for an ENTIRE SPEAKING ROLE in a movie/tv show/video game, and somehow they're mistreated and deserve everyone jumping through hoops for them?
@@JeanneFeisont My point mostly pertains to the ones Mark talked about in the video. Some Voice Actors have trademark voices and should be perceived as stars in their own right. Mark Hamill, for example, deserves all the props for his performances whereas it's not his initial business. The voice actors you refer to are entitled divas with not much of a talent for role composition, or a memorable prosody. I watch most of my animation subbed, as I can't stand half hearted and deja entendu English dubbing performances. After a while, it's a grind to listen to the same guys, talking like they're themselves in front of the vending machine. The Japanese just know how to make voice acting stay fresh...
And yeah, Chris Pratt is just... so generic. I don't get why the guy is in everything these days. He must know a lot of producers. Jack Black was funny as Bowser but the movie just never knew whether to have him as a comedic or genuine villain. Luigi was so barely in the movie, he is forgettable, and Peach is just generic action girl as most modern females. Toad was annoying, but well, that's par for course. Toad IS annoying. Always.
I've heard a lot of people mention that they didn't like Rogan's Donkey Kong but I thought he was great. The only voice that didn't work for me was Anya Taylor Joy as Peach. I agree that the movie was mostly just checking the boxes for game references but it was done in a way that made it very entertaining.
New movie = Horrific casting. Seth Rogan has no star power. Movie would have made money no matter who they put in it. Seth Rogan represents everything wrong with society. May God have mercy on us all.
8:02 Let's face it, in the case of Mortal Kombat, the the soundtrack made up for the bad plot..... And acting..... And special effects. It took a movie that would be a 2/10, and made it into a heart pumping, head banging, adrenaline rushing 6/10.
The whole deal with the 90's movie is funny and sad. The 90's movie had potential, it had a theme that could actually work for a "serious" movie, with some dark humor here and there to lighten the mood (a full-on edgy movie would be cringe tbh). The themes about genetic experimentation and futuristic technology to explain the crazy things that happen in the game is a cool take on the iP, imo. The whole concept of reptiles dominating the world (explaining on why Bowser is the leader) makes me think on Chrono Trigger, like alternate dimensions/realities/timelines explaining why the Mario Brothers end up there. Damn, i hate having all these stupid ideas at 4 am...
Very sad how the actor who played Lucas in The Wizard Jacky Vinson turned out. In 2004, Vinson was sentenced to 10 years probation for child molestation and had to register as a sex offender. Now it should be easier to make a TV Show or Movie from a game as you could almost copy and paste from the game.
Movie was 8/10. Lost two point because jack black had to sing a stupid song that was pointless and they had to insert a woke moment... At the time Super Mario movie, double dragon and even The Wizard were amazing compared to what we were allowed to watch as kids. I think it has a lot to what we had access to and what we had we watched over and over again. Your numbers are also off on the 1993 movie. One thing that didn't help was Bob Hoskins had zero idea what Super Mario even was...
