Yeah, the first Parasite Eve was a gem. Same for Xenogears, this one is my favourite. Vagrant story is excellent also, Valkyrie profile 2 fights were really fun, with some kind of rage bar that you had to fulfill when you made combos with your characters, I loved how they screamed when they attacked. Chrono cross is coming back on PS4 and Switch, it was amazing too (in my opinion Time’s scar is the best song on a game I’ve ever heard). Shadow hearts from another company was one of the best PS2 rpgs.
yeah, back then you got a huge 3 disc game like ff7 every year, now they split the game into 3 or 4 parts and you have to wait 5-10 years between parts, and most people actually praise this... so of course after ff7 remake is such a huge success, they'll milk every popular game they have in a multi part remake. most people may get to play 3 of these remakes in their lifetime, if that. the way games take longer and longer to release as time goes on, it may take 20 years to get part 3 of ff9 remake, or whatever they're making 20 or 30 years from now.
Valkyrie Profile is a story close to my heart. It saddens me so much that the series will just fade away into brainless phone games with zero plot. VP 2 should have ended better so that we weren't left with so many unanswered questions. I hate that Lenneth wasn't able to return to Lucian in her own timeline. Why destroy such a beautiful romantic story with some stupid reset button ending :(
The game does have a plot, and more so, spending money in it increases the chances of a new Valkyrie Profile game being made, please do not post on an any forum without having first hand or reliable knowledge of what you are talking about.
You're forgetting one small point, Yamagishi abandoned both the Star Ocean and Valkyrie Profile series after Star Ocean 4. This forced tri-Ace to work on new IP's with different publishers such as Resonance Of Fate, Beyond The Labyrinth and Fronteir Gate. Resonance of Fate being the last game tri-Ace would ever release overseas for 6 years. Seems all the games flopped in sales, tri-Ace were in a downward spiral with their games which led them to become liquidated into nepro japan, possibly due to the fact that they were broke. If you ask me, the biggest mistake tri-Ace made was working with Konami as Konami didn't want to localize any of them which meant that tri-Ace weren't going to generate as many sales. It came to the point of desperation when they started working for Square-Enix on their Final Fantasy games, with no Producer willing to stand in on tri-Ace's behalf, tri-Ace had nothing left, they put all of their chips on Yamagishi and with him gone, tri-Ace could no longer operate in the same way and the other publishers didn't really do them many favors either. Then Kobayashi came in, recognizing the state tri-Ace was in, he decided to take on the reigns as producer in order to bring back Star Ocean, hence Star Ocean 5's existence. He also intended on bringing back Valkyrie Profile as well... but since Star Ocean 5 was poorly received by the masses (even though I enjoyed it a lot), the chances of that happening now are -1%. So the reason Valkyrie Profile died? Yamagishi... that is all. Yamagishi killed Valkyrie Profile by abandoning tri-Ace... it's funny how he came back for Anatomia but didn't let tri-Ace play any part in it. He eventually left, mocking Kobayashi for his futile attempts to bring back the series. But Yamagishi isn't the only thing to blame, tri-Ace's liquidation definitely didn't help things, they lost a lot of money, even after Yamagishi was gone, one of their projects, Judas Code was a colossal failure which was a massive money loss. And the final reason is that Valkyrie Profile has always been a niché franchise. While the first game has a sizable cult following, the sequal and spin off are pretty obscure by comparison. As such, Square-Enix don't want to risk it. As for Star Ocean 5's flop? That's simple, tri-Ace were already in a bad shape financially beforehand and now that they are owned by a mobile company, it's not very likely that they will be adequately funded as Nepro wouldn't want to invest their own money into projects that have barely anything to do with mobile gaming and Square-Enix definitely wouldn't offer enough money to fund it. As such what we were left with was an under-budget game that was clearly trying to be a big budget game... I personally believe that tri-Ace were personally funding the development of their games, especially Valkyrie Profile 2 which was so well funded that Square-Enix decided to pump extra money into marketing giving it a live action trailer. Despite this, the sales numbers didn't bring a return on that investment, hence the fact why many tri-Ace games after Valkyrie Profile 2 were poorly received by the masses.
I forget the old source but it mentions it on the Wikipedia page for Star Ocean 4: starocean.wikia.com/wiki/Star_Ocean:_The_Last_Hope It says that "he did what he set out to do with the series". As for Konami, the only accusation I gave them was that they didn't localize any of the tri-Ace games they published (fronteir gate and beyond the labyrinth) which meant that there wasn't any opportunity for western sales which could have been done had they localized it.
Resonance of Fate, which has a lot of mixed reviews, is still an interesting concept at heart. Gun-Fu, armed with ordinance with enough scopes, barrels and magazines to create scary Frankensteins of death, while performing Matrix-level acrobatics, is a fun design choice. Too bad you have to grind yourself stupid to get anywhere..
That's all about having great titles/series but awful internal relationship management. A lot of great publishers have this same problem. - Capcom = Resident Evil, Mega Man, Onimusha, Dino Crisis; - Konami = Metal Gear, Castlevania, Silent Hill; - Square-Enix = Valkyrie Profile, "Ivalice world" games (such as FF12, FFTactics and Vagrant Story).
Valkyrie Profile had some of the most beautiful sprite artwork in terms of FLUIDITY IN MOTION. When they leap in to do their attacks, and leap back out into position, the way their hair and clothes moves are some of the most delicately drawn spritework I've ever seen.
same here, I truly, truly loved the PS1 game. That's the reason why I cosplayed Rezard Valeth and loved the story. Some games can be superior to VP but this game lives in my heart and my soul.
The first Valkyrie Profile is my personal favorite RPG of all-time. The music, the characters and each of their tragic story... Damn, I want to replay it again...

If you like the series spend some money on The Mobile version, its mostly story and combat, no town sections, but the combat is like the first game and Ironically its why the game gets such low reviews, you cant use the autobattle function to beat the game even if you are a whale.
I still remember when they made a teaser of a new Valkyrie game...little did we know, it was a god damn Phone game. My rage is still at full blast to this day.
Valkyrie Elysium releases later this year for PS4/PS5.., I look forward to your review. The game looks pretty good from the trailers so I am optimistic lets just hope Square Enix doesn't mess it up I loved Valkyrie Profile Lenneth for the PSP

Shame this franchise doesn't get as much attention as Star Ocean, for me it's far superior to the Star Ocean franchise (except Star Ocean 2 this one is really awesome) I really wish for a VP3 and/or a Valkyrie Profile 2 Remaster. The difficulty of VP2 wasn't actually coming from grinding it was coming from the fact that the most efficient strat were risky in that had you running with a single character at low health with some statut effect on it and knowing the type of your ennemies to equip the good ability to increase the damage against them so no room for error sure you could play normally but then the fights were far longer, the 50 Crystals difficulty add to that by making the ennemies very durable so you have no room and you're facing ennemies that can tank you for a long time and so you have not only to deal damage but also know how to attack, when to attack and for some have to break some specific part of them for an early kill and/or to skip some phases where they gain access to some troublesome ability plus the ennemy are so strong that there is no other that using these risky strat.
I respect your opinion, but I somewhat disagree. I love VP more than SO myself, but SO is far deeper in story in my opinion which probably makes SO much easier to continue than VP.
Never say VP was easier to continue than SO, in fact yeah SO is much easier to continue due to happening in the entire Universe so there's a lot more freedom and possibilties on what they can do and yeah happening during a huge period of time helps to ^^
Valkyrie anatomia global is out. Guees what? Gacha games. You get characters from gacha. You get weapon from gacha. But it has decent stories and not as hard as the other valkyrie profiles games.
Yeah its story is pretty good, and since its easy you dont really need to pay for the gacha stuff to get by. In fact you can be pretty strong without doing any gacha at all, just getting the welfare weapons and stuff from events
when I see this (valkery profile series), I want to cry ... one of the best jrpg of all time and I rank it in my top 3 games ever created ... it hurts me to not hope for a new sequel to this game
I have been collecting DS/3DS JRPGS (currently not collecting any console games), and Valkyrie Profile is on my list, I think this video convinced me to pick it up. I trust each and every one of your opinions. Your videos are so well researched, it's incredible that you put out multiple high quality videos a week! Your passion is awesome. I'm also considering getting a PSP because it looks like there's so many great JRPG titles on it.
Great video as always! My only complaint (small and not a big deal) is that you spoiled a major plot point for the ds game which I haven't played yet, but I don't think it will hurt my enjoyment of it too much. You also forget to mention the PSP game, or is that a port?
I like this game alot . Am playing it on android now .. i played it before on ps1 . Still fun great game . Iwould love to see and play silmeria remake on ps4 or Android i dont mind . Also if they make new game that will also be lovely .
I love your "what happened to" series. You hit the nail on the head with this one. I love the Valkeyrie Profile series. The original on ps1 is my favorite because it's a turn based/timing based rpg similar to the super robot taisen og saga on the ds and project x zone 1 & 2 on the 3ds. That's capitalism for you. Same thing happened to fallout when bethesda bought the rights and made those shitty the elder scrolls re-skins that were bastardized attempts to milk a beloved franchise. Anyways, i would say a big factor is that in this day and age most companies such as squareenix plays safe. It is way easier to make a final fantasy or kingdom hearts game that will sell like pancakes regardless of quality than it is to make a valkyrie profile game as fans expects certain standards on them and can and will boycott them if they are cheap products trying to cater to a broader audience AKA the lowest common denominator
I, too, think the (maybe temporary) demise of Valkyrie Profile lies within Square-Enix's doors. Their only concern is to please millennials and keep them in total monetary control with their phones, which is why I believe we see so many franchises returning on them instead of on consoles. I understand capitalism, and I understand their decisions, but they're clearly not seeing the big picture on how social media is manipulating them into listening to a bunch of Twitter requests instead of a bunch of rational gamers. Nevertheless, this industry is a business and regardless of the fact that it's heavily breaking fanbases apart, they are convinced the end justifies the means.
Erick Landon RPG it is the sad state of this modern society mass consumierism. Producers don't sell what the market wants, they sell what the consumers THINK they want after being manipulated by mass media and trends. You know, gotta have the jewels and play the games all the cool people on youtube and the tv plays. It is the sacrifice of creative integrity for the sake of selling something that fills the most basic and common needs of the average consumer to then produce an effect of dependence and comfort as people gets used to them and then the very consumers are the ones who later DONT want things to change. Take persona for example. Since P3 it began targetting to a much broader gamer base than previous games did by filling it with anime archetypes and stereotypes and become a major name due that, all while watering down or outright removing elements of older titles for a more mainstream appeal that alienated the faithful fans who followed it since its beginnings. Even themes wise lost its edge as it went from dabbling into jungiang themes with varying degrees of subtlery to be straight and in your face with cheap superficial takes on the analysis of the psyche. So yeah. What we need is to revitalize the gamer culture. Videogames are going the same path hollywood movies did with popcorn selling blockbusters that are all flashiness and little substance yet earns billions of dollars. A sad state of the industry but not too late to change it
I love VP1 voice acting. Some lines are cheasy but they're appropriate for the time. My favorite is Maddie Blaustein, who played Arngrim, Lezard Valeth, and a few others. RIP Maddie Blaustein.
VP is probably my second favorite RPG ever but honestly, even when i heard of the sequel I wasn't interested. The first game is such an epic scale Ragnarok scenario that felt so final that I do not see a point for any sequels. I would love a remake though.
Valkyrie Profile, Star Ocean, Radiata Stories, Rogue Galaxy.... Most of the series came from Tri-Ace... Those games were my childhood.. Ahhh.. what a time to be alive...
I absolutely loved both games and I really want a third one, and 2d sidescrolling wont be a bad thing either if you look at modern games like Octopath traveler, I would suggest some godly looking backdrops like they had in 2, then it would be an amazing game not to mention making mages useful endgame would be nice and more classes, pretty much everything they had in 2 and what they had in 1 with a dam good story to go behind it
We really need a sequel to the first game since all three, including Anatomia: The Origins, are prequels of sorts, not sure about Convenant of the Plume. Considering because of the state of Tri-Ace, it seems highly unlikely.

Yup, its pretty good, however there are no town sections, its mostly combat and story, The game is not pay to win which where some of the complaints come from,you need to be good at the combat to proceed. regardless of money spent.
You know, it's funny that you mention that people didn't like VP2 because of the story, even though it answers quite a few questions from the 1st one. Like what happened to Brhams and Silmeria after Lenneth recreated the world, and what happened to the Gods after Loki's defeat, the importance of the Dragon Orb, etc. It also allowed us to see how the Valkyrie's souls work when they are "sleeping" inside Midgardians, which I always found interesting.

That explains why I never saw third Valkyrie Profile and I was so in love with this game there were still some a lot of empty caps well that's what happens when you don't work for a company that doesn't do what you're looking for have a game designer I wish I had a good contract I will bring back the old games nowadays is just bull crap too many good dreams are dying being lost
I just recently started playing the PSP version of Valkyrie Profile and god damn what a great game. I'm hoping to see something more from the series in the future, but i guess chances are low ):
Theres a Valkyrie Profile collab that happened for a game called Final Fantasy Brave Exvius in japan which is coming to the global server soon so its possible that if it gets the same popularity as the NiEr banner it will make Square consider. Even a Valkyie Profile 1 remake with modern graphics would be massive doesnt have to be VP3 Hrist and they can also add more to the unsolved mysteries within the game such as Lady Beliza, who prove useful for a future villain/side villain for Hrist if she ever gets her game
Also Hrist fighting Genevieve again would prove well to explaining more of the lore bits that havent been covered, this game has serious world building potential
Tri-Ace was only a tiny independent company with only a team of less than a hundred (last I checked). I cant blame them for only bringing out a handful of games where the other competitions were bigger comapnies. They are just a unique company that makes unique games.
If I was a youtuber, this would have been my first video. Thank you for making this! I hope SE sees this. I want a VP3 more than any other game. VP is my all time favorite. VP2 was good, but not near as good as 1. It sucks that most returning chars had different voice actors, which I know some cant be helped. Plus Jeremy Blaustein didn't translate VP2. We need a VP3!!!!!

Not even close. They want to maximize on money, sure, but they're not evil. Or stupid. Or both. And they treat their studios with respect. Their JRPGs might not be so good anymore, but look at Eidos and the revival of Deus Ex. It might not mean much to you, but I was ecstatic. They're more like Bethesda. Sure, I hate The Elder Shit and every new Fallout is more like a glorified FPS, but again, look how they treat Id Software, the studio that made my childhood. Look as Dishonored, look and the new Wolfenstein games. Look at Doom! I haven't enjoyed a shooter like that in over a decade!
It's interesting now to consider that Tri-Ace is self-publishing the remaster of Resonance of Fate (one of their best games imo) as it indicates a desire to get out from under the thumb of Square Enix, and resurrect some of their old franchises. They probably chose Resonance as its likely the easiest and cheapest to port, but if that release does well for them, i really fucking hope it does, then maybe, just maybe, there is hope for them resurrecting Valkyrie Profile too. I would suspect after Star Ocean 5 bombed the studio is having a hard time. I would implore all JRPG fans to pick up the resonance of fate re-master. Not only is a great, unique game, but its success could mean SO much more
What happens to great things , great artists and great games is when money is involved they could buy TriAce and make them work for them on mobile games for instance (well its what they did) its all about money at the end of the day, wasted talent on mobile gaming, it is a tragedy man.
I know it's not a 'third installment', but the Star Ocean: Anamnesis app had a collab with Valkyrie Profile called 'Valkyrie Profile: The Purged Wizard' and Hrist is on the cover. Don't know Japanese, however she seems to be the protagonist.
There's been a strong opinion that Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII (the third FFXIII game) was a re-purposed Valkyrie Profile 3. Everything from the story, the world-building, the actual gameplay and the overall feel are very very similar to how Valkyrie Profile 1 and 2 are. Possibly the developers didn't think it would be a hit and changed the main character (Hrist) to Lightning and added on some Final Fantasy paint and cut scenes. It sounds far fetched but the game was developed directed by the Enix side of SE and a large portion of the development team are the same people who worked on VP 1 and 2.
Nevertheless, Lightning Returns is considered by many as one of the worst JRPGs for the past generation. So I am SO HAPPY it wasn't called Valkyrie Profile 3.
i currently playing VP lenneth on mobile, just a pure port from the psp title. despite the horrible field control now with swipe, i still love the game. if only we can get a few extra characters by paying money, i would GLADLY do it. characters like celia and frey could easily made the cut. also adding some stuff in seraphic gate like the strongest spear and katana.. (ethereal divide and masamune i think? just don't cut it)
Sadly it isn't, problem is it's already extremely easy to generate energy in this game (heck without a full team you generate 100 Energy) so there is no need for an Archer for that so at the end of the day it all comes down to Damage and here the game is weird ^^ comparing Archer Lenneth with Ultimate Bow with Sword Lenneth with Ultimate Sword (not Angel Slayer) the damage of normal attacks are pretty much even (a very slight advantage to sword) despite the ultimate sword having 5000 more attack power than the ultimate bow BUT the difference lie in Purify Weird Soul which are your main source of damage and for whatever reasonthe Nibelung Valesti with Sword is 2 times more powerfull (testing with the same ennemy and with Might Reinforce and Sap Guard apply) than the bow one and sadly that alone makes Sword Lenneth better than Archer Lenneth in Seraphic Gate.
The ally will indeed deals a little more damage with their PWS but far from enough to make up for the difference in damage between Sword Nibelung Valesti and Archer Nibelung Valesti.
I have to agree. I remember playing the first one as soon as it came out. And just recently they re-released the first Valkyrie Profile on iPhone/IPad.

I still dream with the day I will see a Kickstarter project of Valkyrie profile 3. It had such unique gameplay and history is good too. A shame to see such a good series forgotten.
I did not know Exist Archive was a spiritual successor I'm looking forward to Indivisible though that game looks cool and will be another in it's style
I think after PS2 era many video games became much easier in difficulty rpg to action were toned down and Valkyrie Profile was known for being on the challenging difficulty and Square Enix not your typical rpg company to produce hard rpg games. This is just my observation to the series.

Im JRPG fan and this one (valkyrie profile) is my best favorite series, i dont understand why there is no other game in consoles ..at leat we have the one is mobile phones even though have not been released in english.. i know it will eventually.. but seriously this game rocks!!
Square-Enix is weird like that, fans of Chrono Trigger have been asking for a proper continuation for years, but all we get are ports to other consoles. Likewise one of Square's finest works Seiken Densetsu 3 (aka Secret of Mana 2) was never released outside of Japan, and when they actually decided to port that game to a next gen console, as before it wasn't released overseas. They did however create an entire HD remake of the original Secret of Mana though, which did get released outside of Japan, but honestly the first game was not half of what SD3 was, and I don't recall hearing many people ask for a remake of that one.
Wait shit, I remember playing multiplayer on Seiken Densetsu 3 using ZSNES online way back when. You mean they re-released it and STILL haven't brought it westwards? Nowadays? I sometimes wonder just how out of touch some Japanese executives are with the rest of the world. They continually seem surprised by things that shouldn't be a surprise.
Hope dies last. Tri-Ace's parent company says Tri-Ace will continue to make console RPGs, and the VP mobile game did well, so Square Enix knows there is an audience for a new entry. Personally I think whenever TA pitches some games to SE, SE chooses a new Star Ocean since that seems to be the more popular franchise.

With rpg’s you know your heart will likely get stomped on, but the amazing stuff makes up for it. Like Shadow Hearts, I knew it was going to die, but loved every second of the series while it existed. I am still sad it is gone, but there is a whole slew of new games to try. : )
Yeah man, Shadow Hearts was fucking amazing. I haven't played another series like it. It's proof enough that even though the genre may be formulaic in some ways, you can still do interesting things with it. I loved seeing Yuri and Alice's relationship develop, and well... how it turned out. Not to mention the concept of being a Harmonixer in a "real world fantasy" world filled with mages and demons was pretty badass.
"Fuck tri-Ace"?! More like fuck Square Enix! tri-Ace was faced with 2 choices: sell the company to Nepro Japan, or go out of business. Im really salty over the lack of tri-Ace support from SE. And that Working Designs went under. So much salt.
