What the Hell is Agnostus?!

Agnostus was an odd animal. From what we can tell it had a body similar to that of a small trilobite. But looking closer it also had some traits trilobites don't have. This means that Agnostus is kind of in an agnostic state where it both is and maybe isn't a trilobite.

Man, these agnostids were my Masters research--accidentally. Needed to find one to date the unit I was studying. Found a P. intermedius--and even that was just the pygidium--but it made my day. We also found echinoids, phosphatic brachiopods (which were already known), etc. But no group became so associated with my masters as the agnostidae.

I’m still unclear, did agnostids evolve into trilobites, or are they an early trilobite, or ?? Precambrian life and the geologic changes are fascinating.

@@thesjkexperience The schools of thought that I'm aware of are either that they're trilobites, or they're descended from a common ancestor with trilobites, but aren't trilobites.

One day a week we think about Agnostus, Raptor Jeebus, and we do this as a community, its important that everyone show up, or at least send one representative per family.

The thing about Agnostids we have basal forms that transitional from more traditional trilobites and the more derived agnostids, Even if they aren't trilobites they'd be their sister group so it'd be pedantic to distinguish them. I do hope to eventually do a video series on trilobites

Just looking at general appearances, there are quite a few other non-trilobite Artipods that more closely resemble the Agnostids, like Soomaspis and Tarricoia. I'm not a professional so this is mostly just a guess, but I'd just like to add it.

I have some 1 mm large Agnosti in a stone, so I have seen them! I have seen the Light, and that is the only thing that matters, trilobites or no trilobites!
