My big issue with game streaming service is that if you have magical super fast internet required for streaming a game then downloading said game wouldn’t take more than five minutes. So they’re really gunning for complete impulse purchases from people who aren’t informed beyond a minute long trailer. Seems like a bad system where people are going to get taken advantage of to me. It also seems like crafty game developers will front load content and get away with making crap products.

The only benefit I see is that it completely eliminates the need to upgrade your PC, or even have a gaming PC at all. For example, I bought I super high end PC a couple years ago. The year after, Nvidia came out with their RTX series of gpu's. I'd want to wait a few years anyways for it to mature, but damn I really want to try those out. If Google could just let me play a game using one of those gpu's (I know the service doesn't work that way, this is just for the sake of argument), that would save me the effort of having to invest in it and do the upgrade. I could just buy a shitty laptop that doesn't have a dedicated GPU and use that for gaming forever. Or at least until I need a higher resolution screen.

Couldn’t care less about streaming games. The dude demoing it on stage had very noticeable lag, and people who have played it on the show floor said the same thing. Hearing them talk about the possibility of getting ads shoved in our faces while playing games makes me even more skeptical about this.

@@albertjohnston1026 Sure, you'll also never own your games or be able to play multiplayer games in any serious manner. Or have a 1:1 reaction in any game, ever, single player or otherwise. Even with the fastest streaming available, there's a lag instituted, and that's with the brunt of the data already on your console or hard drive. If you wanna play a potato that moves about a second or two after the input, be my guest. The idea of paying them to borrow said potato, kinda makes my dick soft. So.. to each their own I spose.

To be clear, I don't think that they can pull off the latency thing, I think it's a problem they won't be able to solve just yet. But in theory, I'm not opposed to services, especially this one. If they could address the latency issues and the video quality issues, then I'm happy. I don't need to own my games, I don't care. It's no different to me than if I was renting them or just paying an up front cost to indefinitely lease them. It's the same result. I get to play a game I like. And again, if the service can do it without the expected issues, then it's even better than having my own rig at home. Or at least simpler, maybe not better.

I'll always side with owning something over streaming. I even buy seasons of shows on Hulu and such though. But like I said, to each their own. I'm just fairly certain their 4k 60fps is blatent bullshit. Let alone 8k lololol

You'll get in game native ads. Dynamic in game and changing, with a way to register your interest in something you see in game to bring up at the end of the session. Plenty of opps. Hoardings in city maps. Around the court/field/pitch in sport. Sponsored timers. Etc.

Lawrence brought up a good point about game companies giving you easier enemies in multiplayer to make you play more. In a way, Overwatch has been doing that for years by only letting you play against people at your own skill level. Sometimes you need to get stomped to see how to improve but you never get to do that in any overwatch game because the internal MMR system only lets you play against scrubs at your level. As someone who used to be pretty damn good, if I do say so myself, at COD I have definitely noticed a difference switching from overwatch to something like Apex Legends.

DocFree59 of they're all scrubs on your rank you should be able to rank up easily and play better opponents. You're not really making sense right now. And don't put it on your teammates. If ur good, you rank up. Also Apex is easy but inconsistent. You can't win every game and it's too many variables that aren't always in ur control. But it's also easy to pop off.

Something I just realized when Bruce was talking about clicking ads. I grew up as the internet grew so it was indoctrinated into me not to click ads. “You can get viruses!” My eyes tend to look past ads. To block them out. But kids who are adults today, or kids today grew up with the internet fully formed and may be more susceptible to them.

The thing id argue is that the fact that you have to go through a store and then add it to your cart, put in your info, go through all of checkout kind of makes you think about what youre doing (at least for me) and can give you time to be less impulsive and realize you might be throwing away money like ive done so fucking many times goddammit. the show The Expanse has people that were born and lived their whole lives on asteroids or space stations, one way they were actually tortured was to put them on straps under their arms on Earth, and the higher gravity basically pulled their body apart like the Rack

Regarding the bandwidth needed for 4k@60: Your HDMI connection only needs such a huge bandwidth because the signal isn't compressed between frames. Even a lossless compression between frames would lower the necessary bandwidth by a lot. If they'd use a lossy per-frame & inter-frame compression that is in perfect balance with the used textures and graphical style (Google machine learning at your service!) the necessary bandwidth would shrink even further.

Lawrence is correct about compression. The first thing you learn about compression is it doesn't work on random data. If you know/can predict what comes next, or if you find redundancies in the data, then it can be compressed. Otherwise the data cannot be compressed and if you try to do it, the length of the resultant code might be even more than the original data. Compressing live games is tough.

The "impression demos" will be in a highly idealized situation with the said servers very very close if not at the same spot therefore minimalizing or even completely removing the problems of actual internet connections.

The biggest problem will probably be input lag, if I'm able to reliably hit a .1 second window if I have the timing down like max acting in dmc4 then it's fine but otherwise you can feel if a game isn't working. The best examples I can think of are play DmC collection on PSNow you can feel its not right. The other was Halo 4 ( whatever the multiplayer mode was) where data was server side, you would put the trigger wait a second then the gun would fire.

I don't think people really care about download time or what to pay(well kinda) but what we want is ONE plattform that hosts ALL games like steam kinda does. No UPlay, Origin, Twitch, Epic... Just one thing where you can buy and play games in with all your friends connected and game media share.

prolly late for this, but I heard that sex in space isnt just difficult position-wise, but that the lack of gravity affects blood pressure and makes maintaining an erection more difficult than on Earth. There's also the problem of fluids getting loose in zero-G, so basically all the bottoms have to be swallowers to keep the gear from getting damaged, or have a whole room in the ship dedicated to gettin' it on.

The 1st party studio and exclusive content is the same as the Netflix originals model, just because your not pushing hardware doesn't mean you don't need need exclusive content. Exclusivity locks people into your ecosystem because they can't get it elsewhere

I feel like the biggest takeaway here is learning how much out-sized influence any monopoly can have. Two weeks ago the discussions about the game industry were something completely else. All google had to do was look at it and it changed everything in a day. It won't benefit the existing gaming consumer or the games industry, not even half as fast as it will benefit Google. Certain people will make a lot of money. It'll probably go on that way until microtransactions get too much attention; governments could get directly involved with regulating games. Or the monetization bursts the bubble this industry has been building, and google can acquire any company around that goes under.

It's not about selling units. It's about selling Subscriptions. It'll never be about selling games - the money is in selling a subscription service. They've started a dev team, like Netflix has their own studios. But at the same time, they'll have games by other studios on their service, like Netflix has shows from other studios that aren't part of the Netflix stable. The model is identical. It's easier to sell a $10 sub than it is a $60 game that needs a $300 piece of hardware to play.

I think Google is saving their games for an actual exhibition. If they showed everything now, we'd be alot less curious when they announce their next showcase. i guarantee you more people will now watch their presentation at E3 (or whatever) than if they had blown their load at GDC.

I use GeForce now on my ultrabook and it works pretty well. The only issue is that it falls to pieces everytime the internet drops below like 10 mbps. I expect that stadia will work similarly.

Hey Lawrence, just to let you know about people who still play rhythm games. We just buy the arcade cabinets now and play that shit at home. Might not be the newest flashy version but I don't have to worry about garbage as lag either so. Beatmania iidx rules

I wonder If stadia doesn't fail then it could mean a better future for VR because people won't need a high end pc or a powerful console anymore which would be better for the average consumer and drive more VR sales

VR is the most sensitive to latency gaming system out there, to the point where the developers were contacting the manufactures of commonly used chips to get faster versions for the headset. VR just won't be streamable without risking some serious motion sickness.
