I live in the town that Kobe went to High School … I was in my 20's when Kobe was in HS. The split was 50/50 around here about whether he should or shouldn't make the jump. Most if not all people knew he would make the NBA. Some thought he wasn't quite "ready" for it and college would better prepare him for that. Also, remember, back then most kids went to college for at least 3 years. There was little 1 and done as there is today so a lot of people were simply saying that he should go and get his education. I was one of the 50% that wanted him to go to the NBA - most of us close to that neighborhood knew he was playing with NBA guys and more than holding his own!

That is accurate, and was a real concern, but far less often mentioned, and probably a bigger concern, was the fact that KG, due to some academic struggles, was almost 20 coming to the NBA, while Kobe was only 17. That is a huge difference in development for a kid, both physically and mentally. Jerry West knew it would take a couple of years, but it was worth the wait.

Kobe was the greatest player I ever watched. Yes, I watched Kareem, Jordan, Magic, Bird, etc! I never seen any one player dominate the competition like Kobe Bean Bryant. If Kobe doesn't get hurt, he easily scores over 40,000 points. Easily! There is an argument about Jordan being the best but let's put Kobe on those bulls title teams and they still win 6. Now put Jordan on the teams without Shaq. Yes with Shaq Jordan wins 3. But Gasol and Odom do you really think Jordan leads those lakers to back to back titles coming out the west? Remember, the west has been the strongest conference for 20 years! Kobe had a tougher road to the finals every year. Jordan struggled for 7 seasons until Grant and Pippen came.
