What can you do on a Wednesday in Ajijic, Mexico? Check out this Tianguis and local restaurant specials!
►Get MORE from Tangerine Travels: / tangerinetravels
In today's Mexico travel vlog, we are in Ajijic, Jalisco checking out the Wednesday Tianguis that pops up every week. We also check out the drink prices at a local restaurant and have some great ribs at a discounted price. Plus, you can see Laska's crazy reaction to the treats we bring back for her. She is LOCA! ;)
ABOUT US (MADDIE & JORDAN)
In January 2018, we sold everything we owned in the US (except our husky Laska & what fit in our tiny, tangerine Prius C3) to travel the world-starting with Mexico. Since then, we've been making travel videos about our life in Mexico and the new experiences we encounter while traveling the world. If you'd like to join our shenanigans, subscribe to our RU-vid channel. You can also poke around our social media to find out what we’re up to each week.

Jordan- loved the Spanish while wearing your hat!🤠 Don’t let the mean comments get to you, you guys are doing a great job. It’s nobody’s business if you don’t disclose where you are staying. You can keep some aspects of your travel personal. Love that we get to see Laska too! I would like to share pics of my husky with you, but I don’t have any social media accounts! I’m always anxious for the next video❤️

Oh how I remember those tianguis, super interesting and always great food! You guys are so cool, I admire your sense for adventure. I get so nostalgic for Mexico watching your videos. Ya veo que hablan mucho más español. Que bueno para los dos. Les digo una cosa, antes de ir a México hablaba poquito español, pero después de estar allí tanto tiempo mi español se hizo más fluido. What really helps is being around people that only speak Spanish, listening to music (rock en español), and watching TV in Spanish. That really improved my vocabulary. Wish you guys all the best. Looking forward to seeing more updates. Hasta luego!!!!

❤️👍Do what it is you want to do, listen to suggestions, those that complain have a personal agenda that is not yours... don't worry about it. You've already proven you can hold an audience (they come, they go), you will never make everybody happy, stop worrying so much Maddie❤️❤️ 👍Do lo que quieres hacer, escuchar sugerencias, los que se quejan tienen una agenda personal que no es tuyo... no te preocupes. Ya has demostrado que puedes tener una audiencia (vienen, van), nunca harás feliz a todo el mundo, deja de preocuparte tanto Maddie ❤️ Buen Provecho 8^} ️

My favorite coffee vendor is on the caratera in Ajijic. Same price as the guy at the Wednesday market, $180 pesos per kilo, $90 for half-kilo. He has both regular and dark roast, fine or coarse ground. I prefer the finely ground, dark roast. Very good! Also, he's got to be one of friendliest guys you'll ever meet.

1st- I sat at that same table at Brew House. 2nd- You need to go hiking on Tuesday or Friday with Ajijic Hiking Club (say hi to Brett). 3rd- Chapala has a larger tianguis on Monday that is cheaper. 4th- Need to go to Isla Mezcala on Friday or Saturday so you can also eat at the restaurant.

I believe those of us...like myself who are actually planning to make this move are interested in finding "process" more than anything else with regard to seeking accommodations. It appears you use Airbnb mostly. There are so many groups on Facebook, that its a pleasure to find someone actually in real time experiencing things. Keep up the great work! You are greatly appreciated!

I also collect centavos, they are not only cute they are also magnetic, I guess I’m also weird. Usually Tianguis is cheaper to buy your product. In reference to prices in general in Ajijic - things cost more because there are so many Americans, & Canadians who have lots of $$$. So all costs more...that simple. We've been here in Zapopan for 5 yrs - we co-own a very nice large home - so have seen that locals believe us to be kinda rich - not the case, my wife, Luna our dog, and I live on my social security - which isn't much by US standards - which is why we moved here, could not afford to live in our native CA. We are now in early stange of sellng & moving to WA. In closing - where there are more money people, prices up...that simple. FYI. Also, there is a nice, the only, dog park in Ajicic couple blocks behind Walmart. Closes by noon or so...they also keep hroses. Owned by very nice American woman. We like you all - also recommend you buy weekly english newspaper called Guadalajara Reporter - is mostly about Lakeside events and area. Adios...

My soon to be wife, Rosa was pricing places to rent in that same area. Found a place for 3000 pesos a month. I could only imagine that is ballpark of what you are paying, maybe a little more. Just to give everyone an average guess as to what you might be spending. Usually everything is included.

3,000 pesos/mo is unheard of in Ajijic. We ran into one guy who was stoked about finding a 7,000-peso rental after looking for a long time in Ajijic. Someone else we know is paying about 18,000/month for a really nice 1 bedroom. If I had to take my best guess, I think this home could rent for 15-30,000 pesos per month in a longer-term lease.

What city was this in? There are other cities around Ajijic that are much cheaper.

We found our rental place on www.accesslakechapala.com/for-rent-listings/ a year ago. Because there is such a high demand, rental prices are increasing much faster than the local inflation rate. People are moving to San Juan and Jocotopec for lower rents. There are lots of other rental agencies on line for lakeside. Just google it. As they say Ajijic is Gringolandia. IMHO, 3000 pesos a month is unheard of here in Ajijic. That sounds like a short term house sit rate. If not, good for you!

Understood how this is getting increasingly popular and prices are going up. I'm guessing this would be in Jalisco close to where she lives now, not far from the airport. Understand she is native. She might have an edge over other potential buyers or renters. Looking forward to buying and renovating then selling . I have done much concrete and construction in my past.

Quick flipping of houses doesn't happen here in Mexico! If you sell within 3yrs of purchase, you pay a 16% VAT tax plus the normal fees.

COOL Tianguis but the prices are a bit high, when Jordan asked the guy how much for the coffee, coarse ground or fine ground, a kilo at 180 pesos is expensive! Y una gran FELICITACIÓN al buen Jordan, hay va el chato con su castellano! :)

Yes you are making public videos - but yes you have the absolute right to keep some of your details private - we don't need to know everything about you. Now knowing everything about Laska would be awesome. I just can't understand the fact that she loves being carried - she is adorable

Hey, I think I goofed up. I always wanted to give your site the credit for Airbnb since I've never booked ever before. So I finally dropped the hammer. Bit the bullet. Jumped in with both feet. You get the idea. It wasn't Ajijic like I thought originally, maybe later. It wasn't Oaxaca by the Ocean, it will be later. It was Puerto Vallarta!. I don't speak the language yet so I'm hesitant of going to native. I know it's tourist central but it's only the first month. Long story longer. The reason I'm writing you is, after booking I wrote airheads a message with your link, telling them I made the mistake of registering before using your link. So it might be something you want to mention, being clueless I didn't know. Let me know if they give it to you, it was a long message like this. Ya'll welcome to visit in November if you're still around

Mexicans got the term Tianggui from the filipino word "tiyangge" , which means a market. Way back to the Colonial Period of Spain in the Philippines, Mexico had often contacts with Filipinos through the Galleon trade, between Acapulco Mexico and Manila, Iloilo, and Zamboanga, Philippines. No wonder, we have so many things in common with the Mexican People today, the only thing is that, we only speak fewer spanish words. I am not really sure why the Philippines was not able to adapt the language fully, but one thing I know is that we spoke the language before and only those cities which were highly-concentrated with Creoles or Spanish Mestizos, had the most number of Spanish speakers in the country. Not until the world war 2 broke out, Manila, including other provinces like Iloilo, and others were severely damaged by the aforesaid war, and led to the declining population of the Spanish speakers.

A year ago we drove over 10,000 km throughout most of Mexico and only had one issue in Chiapas a few hours before San Cristobal de las Casas where they were collecting "donations" for the local politicians. But Chiapas is the wild west of Mexico and best for more seasoned travelers. See pattynoverlandtravels.blogspot.com/2017/06/palenque-to-san-cristobal.html for more details. The rest of the time we felt very safe and appreciated the military check points between states - they were just keeping things safe. I suspect the reason Maddie and Jordan were stopped so many times is they don't have a front license plate. We have Texas plates which includes a front plate and have only been pulled over once. Once (somewhere in southern Mexico) I was driving too fast and bounced over a tope which was witnessed by a local and a federal police officer. They signaled me to pull over and when they noticed the Texas plates they started making fun of Trump, we laughed along with them and then he said "OK go!" No ticket, no bribe and we went on our way promising to be more careful with the topes (speed bumps).
