For me, You're Losing Me is so significant. It's not just the missing pieces of the Midnights eras. I think it's the exact end of the "saga" she started since Red (I called it the pop saga), which is why this song recalls many of her older songs, even the ones she made before the recently-ended relationship. In my opinion, Midnights could still be interpreted as a breakup and/or a self-awareness & self-criticism album. From my perspective, the narrator saw the relationship slowly end, which reminded her of her past relationships. She started to analyze them, which led to self-awareness & self-criticism.

I don't feel Midnights is so much a "Break Up" album as a "End of the Relationship" type of album. I think Taylor was still holding on, in denial about what was truly happening when she wrote most of it. But regardless either way, it does hit different listening to it now. Even Lavendar Haze sounds like someone who is desperate to hold onto that love bubble, even though its about over. You're Losing Me sounds like her starting to fathom that they might break up. She's still praying and hoping, but starting to accept it.

Midnights is growing on me, the first time I felt VERY experimental, but now it makes a lot of sense in her musical evolution

I think her and Joe broke up and that started midnights, they got back together so the album had to be reconfigured, and that’s why ending a 6 year relationship a random day in March was actually so permanent

Im a bit scared of TS11! I love this era, but the fact that Taylor's doing so much (breaking so many records) means that TS11 may be closer than we think (like she has released 6 albums since 2019 and i think she has already recorded the Taylor's versions). With this Till Dawn edition, however i feel like the end of the Midnights era is really close. Or maybe shes "ending" this era so that Speak Now finally gets the attention it deserves (still underrated in my opinion, but the re-release may change that) so maybe thats why shes ending this era and not because of TS11. ❤btw great video, I love your lana series so much. ( i dont know if this makes any sense, i just wanted to write it down😅)

I do think this song is clearly about Joe, and some of the other songs on the album are, as well, but I do not think this proves every song on Midnights should be interpreted about Joe as a breakup album. I think it is still clear the songs are about sleepless moments throughout her life just like she said. But clearly, a Joe breakup would be one of those things.

I think that "you're losing me" kinda grabs the attention towards her growing anxiety like "the archer" did. The beats in "the archer" just don't simply drop drown till the end raising up the anixety and kinda points out towards her overthinking and sleepless nights just like "you're losing me". (idk if that made sense or not 😭)

Your last Midnights video totally swung the gates open for me and made me realize that Midnights was a breakup album all along. It made me like the album so much more, and gave it more depth. The way she has planned this album cycle and kept us interested in the story of it (and spending money) for seven whole months is amazing - absolutely an imperial era. I have enjoyed your videos on this so much! I am also ~really~ hoping for more rock inspiration from Taylor.

You're Losing Me was definitely an amazing add on but it overall gave me the same vibes as Midnight Rain but in a more direct manner about Taylor's frustrations with Joe. I agree that Hits Different is by far the stand-out of the album and serves as the perfect closer in confirming the relationship is dead and over. Since your last review I have honestly grown to near obsession with the album and despite initially hating it, Midnights just sounds so mature and yet still captivating lyrics-wise when compared to 1989 which is personal but more focused on creating fun bops.

You needed to do it and we THANK YOU for your service. We did it Eljohn, we just knew we already got the album we were waiting for. I knew you don't for from "go pick out a white dress" to " I'd marry you with paper rings" to sharp turn into "that 1950s ish they want from me" in on album cycle/ phase of life. Sure your goals and timing change but the fire was coming from inside the house. And honestly when she first described/ pitched the album and said she drew inspo from fraught 70s romantic drama like kramer vs kramer and the like (if I got that right) and the aesthetic was so forlorn I was like "oh this is gonna be another sad one," and was soooo surprised by the upbeat nature of it. Until the 3am tracks and then I was like... "I think this sadder, more complex sound is what it was supposed to sound like but something got patched up to make it a bit less overt that something was amiss. And now we know.

Yay!!! I’m so glad you posted your take on this as well. I’m also so happy to have Hits Different on streaming finally. If that doesn’t show up as my #1 streamed song I’ll be surprised. You’re Losing Me is heartbreaking and so familiar. It definitely completes the story of this being a breakup album. I can see why they held it back given she had a tour coming right on the heels of the album and there’s always so much criticism and speculation about her life. Midnights itself was already very telling, but this would have been quite the nail in the coffin if included with the initial release. My guess is that she and Joe had problems for a long time possibly called it quits much earlier than we know and was released to the public. Either that, or they were sort of beating a dead horse and dragging things on past when it was clearly over. Hard to say given their complicated lifestyles with their careers and goals. But the hints in past albums showed that things weren’t always roses and I just wonder if the pandemic kind of changed the trajectory of what their relationship would have been. It affected so many relationships. Also, there’s been a lot of discussion about who is at the piano at the end of the video. I wonder who you think it’s meant to be? My initial thought was that it was meant to be Joe (as he played some piano in the Folkmore duo) and the clock hitting midnight in the coffee (a literal cup of joe-h/t to amagicalmess on Reddit for that) meant their time was up / new day begins. I’ve seen discussions it could be Jack or Matty, so it’s up to interpretation for sure. As for the Ice Spice remix of Karma, I love them both and thought the video was so cool-so many references to the eras throughout. The part with them lassoing the moon and Saturn is such an iconic moment. That said, I’m not a big fan of the remix, itself, sadly. IMO, Ice Spices’s vocals sound weirdly tacked in and it didn’t feel like her energy matched the track very well so it’s kind of jarring. I just think it wasn’t the best song for their collab, but that’s my personal opinion and I’m glad that it hits for so many others. Maybe it will grow on me, but for now the original is still tops for me.

I love your description of Hits Different. It’s one of my favorite TS songs but I never felt like it fit with the rest of the album. Morning after song is the perfect way to describe it

My two predictions: 1) Eras Tour International runs from March '24 to July '24, TS11 is announced at the final show in London, Oct release. Either Rep or 1989 get a TV in the spring. 2) TS11 is an expansive double album and has no shortage of genres represented. Healy has mentioned in the past he'd love to see her go back to her roots a bit more, he floated the idea of working with her on a country western album 3 or 4 years ago. But I expect rock, funk, and folk in the mix as well. 21 songs, 90 minutes minimum.

After seeing the concert, I really think that the next album is going to include a bunch of fire visuals. When Midnights was first announced, the 60s glam aesthetic made me think/hope Taylor would go a pop rock route, like a California easy listening soft rock kind of thing a la Mandy Moore's newest albums. I think it would suit her (and the aesthetic, but obviously that didn't happen)

I loved the till dawn version with this new song "You're losing me" and the New lana version.... not gonna lie though Ice Spice on Karma just doesn't do it for me. Taylor is hype and Ice for me personally brings it down, Spice sounds Melo and just her ad libs don't click well. I'm so happy we ended up with Karma as the last single and a MV...I wish we would have the solo track as the MV... but not mad at any of her work on this record.

And Matty heal thing is just setting a platform for a massive shots being aimed at her.. HARD disagree in terms of the Ice Spice part. It is honestly extremely BAD. It makes the song sound trashy and takes away all the sincerity of the songs. It really sounds like a school project that was thrown together last minute and wasn’t rehearsed when the two were together. It is the worst thing I have ever heard from Taylor.

Her breakups do make her a fortune, but I do wish she'd just stay single. There isn't anything she needs a man for and they just hold her back and slow her down. Sure, she gets great songs out of it, but why put yourself through all that? Hook up from time to time if you want to, but a relationship, for her, is just not likely something that's going to last because what man can be 2nd to that? And she sure doesn't deserve to be 2nd to any man. So how is it likely it'll ever work out to a forever thing? She's too huge at this point, deservedly so, and that should be enough. No man required. She's just a romantic sentimentalist though so she just keeps hoping and trying. Not all women are meant to be moms and wives and little more. Some have another purpose in life. Unicorns are rare and a man that can be what Taylor needs and still be happy is a unicorn.
