I don't expect to get any support for this, but to me Fearless TV is the one re-record that didn't work. Why? Because Taylor's teenage vocals are part of what makes these songs iconic. Listen how she's "begging you please don't go..." in the original. Now listen to the re-record. Sorry, just no. "Can't breathe without you, but I have to..." - same thing. This isn't a knock on the TV project as a whole - most of the new performances are better than the originals, and I'm a sucker for the vault songs (btw, another Bye Bye Baby fan here!). I didn't even have this issue with Speak Now TV, except in the powerhouse line "over your sad empty town" in Dear John, which got nerfed so hard it's, well, sad and empty. I'm dying to know what the re-recorded debut will sound like. I suspect it'll have the same issue, but then those aren't songs we grew up listening to, so maybe it'll work.
I just wanna say I got h*gh watching this video and decided to listen to the album in between your takes on the record and it was an awesome experience your analysis and descriptions are spot on cheers
I dunno, I loved 2018 and 2019 pop I loved that trap-influenced and a little more ambient/darker sound, but without being totally sullen or hazy like we've had in the last couple of years (MILEY).
She has a pretty distinct register tbh! It doesn’t really show as well on Espresso but Please Please Please feels sorta unique, I will say some of the early early work blended in too well
Hailee Steinfeld could never carry her own music. Her most popular music are her feautured on it, but not the main artist. She can't sing well and lacks writing talent
She just had a bad record label. Hollywood Records is notorious for stilflimg talent. Selena Gomez didn't start getting very famous for her music until she left too.
I like her music now but I dislike this narrative. Her music wasnt even that good before eics, Im happy shes getting recognized with good music under her arm. Some may say overdue, I say just in time
Espresso reminded me of teenage dream (Katy Perry) . Just the way the video looks and the sorta vibe. I think she would be really similar to Katy. Fun, versatile, and capable of having depth when wanted
That last part is why I think she’ll have longevity, like when she goes deep, she really does have substance. Sure everyone is “me espresso” now but when she comes for us with a newer ballad or a darker track, she’s already had years of experience!
From what I’ve gathered, radical optimism has not pulled the numbers that FN did early on, but my god every concert clip I’ve seen from her current tour is so good. She’s at her prime with live performing and I am so envious of those who got tickets! 🥲❤️
i've been a fan for quite a while, loved her on girl meets world & evolution was the first album i bought on apple music (lmao i never really bought anything before but i wanted to support her), and the de-tour in orlando was the first concert i ever went to by myself! i really appreciate all the research you did on this video, it's so crazy to see how much she's grown and how much she's going to grow from here on now. still sad she never got a true broadway run bc i know that's always been one of her dreams, but at least she technically did it for like 2 shows 😭 i remember 2 years ago when emails i can't send was released, i bought a signed cd and those didn't sell out for at least a week or more... she just released signed vinyls of short n sweet yesterday and it sold out in 8 minutes 😭 so happy for her as a long time fan but dang now it's ruining my chances to get her merch and her tour tickets are going to be a blood bath asdfja;lks
true romance OG represent! i heard "grins" by blood diamonds (now bloodpop) and "you" by gold panda before true romance, and hearing those sampled on her debut surprised me because i was like how the fuck do you know these obscure songs. charli remained on my radar ever since. similar experience happened when i heard "next level charli", because i knew that from A G's "big bratt" mix (wait a minute... bratttttt?), although not as unexpected since she's been working with A G for a few years now.
For a long time I think Sabrina just wasn't the "look" the music industry wanted to push. I think it was more so Doja Cat and Ice Spice. But Ice Spice failed to make an impression and then T-Swift took Sabrina under her wing instead. Like clockwork. That seemed to stick more. (Tyla is also the look / genre they're trying to push but she's promising so she is likely here to stay.) Granted some people were still walking past Sabrina during her opening sets, but I think her current label is actually doing their job and pushing her, and that helped make Espresso go viral. Utilizing TikTok also helped because that's how everything goes viral. just lots of viral tracks with short lifespans.
The only thing is I think the Barry Keoghan thing will bite her in the butt one day. She might get roped into cancel culture. But she seems to be doing everything else right.
I’m shocked she didn’t get dragged the same way Ariana did earlier this year, granted she’s younger and less high profile but Barry’s whole baby business was… messy
@@EljohnMacaranas Plus in her song when she says "I said it's just your culture, they roll their eyes" I'm CONVINCED she's talking about his heavy drinking.
@@EljohnMacaranas Singers rarely get dragged when they first go mainstream, it's usually years down the line. Step 1: Celebrity gets overexposed. Step 2: People get tired of hearing about them. Step 3: People dig up old skeletons. This will be one of them. I'm pretty sure they'll use Barry against her. (Plus any future ammunition they find.) There's some good in being mainstream, there's also some good in being a "hidden gem" that only a few people know and keeping your love life private. She's lost that privacy for now.
As a guy who has been following Charli since True Romance and who has liked all her projects, I can say this is hands down her best work. I think "Girl, so confusing" is the best song Charli has made. The album is challenging AND accessible, thought provoking AND fun, and it's idiosyncratic-- no one else could have made this record. She's earned all the praise.
You're losing me became so personal for me bc it helped me get out of a relationship that was draining me mentally and physically, so I will defend midnights album and especially that song till my last breath!!
POP HAS ITS SAVIORS (on top of the girls that are already there but it's so nice to have two distinctly different pop girls coming up at the same time)
@@EljohnMacaranas absolutely. I lost my pop lust after artpop fizzled out and didn't get the love it deserves. The fact that Chappell is lesbian makes me happy for mainstream pop representation. I can't remember if there was ever another openly lesbian mainstream pop girly?
Mark my words: Brat's sound will be the sound of the mainstream music towards the end of the 2020s decade. I'm telling you! Edit: it will coincide with the revival of the late 2000s/early 2010s electropop and will be the reaction to the ubiquity of country music and guitar driven music in the mid-2020s.
I had an adhd moment and know I'm like....do straights actually listen to ed sheeran, I feel like nobody listens to him. Ok like I get that people do listen to him but likei guess those people are just like not living in my existence you know.🙃
I’m so excited to see the short and sweet stage set because eics looked GORGEOUS and her coachella set was so cool (I’m gonna implode if I don’t get a ticket)
Also as someone that’s been here since the movie days but probably wasn’t commenting I can assure you it’s been a ride, but I like to see yall reviewing movies again even if it’s on the podcast. It may not be for everyone but you were one of the very few channels that didn’t make me feel stupid for liking a certain movie or show and also gave quiet good insights and thoughts behind the movie, you’ve been able to do the same with music. Also I’m saying probably not commented because I know my first comment was probably on a Taylor or Ariana video because I like my first comment to seem well intentioned and well thought out and i could probably map out both Ariana’s and Taylor’s entire career off the top of my head if asked
Thank you so much 💙 it means a bunch to me, I genuinely just felt like movies were over saturated at the time and my passion for pop needed like an outlet but I’m ready to branch out and use the podcast as a way to do that again!
@@EljohnMacaranas your welcome also this isn’t tea or shade to other creators in the music, show, and movie critic spaces but a lot of them use there platform to spreed negativity. Even in the wake of Brat I’ve noticed people are only giving it positive reviews are just putting Charli as the anti Taylor, Ariana,Dua lipa, Billie, Olivia, and most other female artist you can name. So I would watch anything you review critically because I hate the genuine Bullsh*t most other creators and critics have become.
@@EljohnMacaranas ngl I feel like that would be karmic justice for interscope to lose out on this album as justice for how they treated other artists but hoping this doesn’t mean that they don’t give Camila proper promotions and as many opportunities to exceed as an artist
