What the Trump rally gunman did before the attack 

That an untrained 20 year-old was able to climb on a roof, crawl on it in clear view of yelling witnesses in an area supposedly surrounded by secret services and municipal police, get into position with his weapon and fire at a presidential candidate before being taken down is extraordinary. It's not like Trump was speaking on a city street surrounded by dozens of tall buildings and multiple balconies. No, it was in an isolated area, with just a couple of roofs close to the rally and in plain view of security services. I find myself dumbfounded.

PEOPLE WERE LITERALLY ALERTING THE LOCAL AUTHORITIES.

They took a damn video of the guy crawling around like a snake on the roof. Some Secret Service we have...

They had a picture of the guy on the ladder 15 minutes before.Come on CNN don't minimize.

CNN makes the point that he was noticed acting suspiciously by the local police, but CNN does not tell their viewers that he was noticed acting suspiciously a full 26 minutes before the shooting. 26 minutes is a lot longer than this bs 1 minute and 57 second time frame. It was 26 minutes when the local police notified the Secret Service of his odd behavior. What isn't clear yet is if the Secret Service made any attempts to monitor him after they were notified. Also, an eyewitness said he alerted police about him at least 4 minutes before the shooting and that's why a policeman climbed the outside building and saw the gunman before he shot. CNN's 1 minute 57 timeline is not accurate and really provides some cover for the Secret Service's failure by making it sound like they had no time to prevent this. They were tipped off about him 26 minutes before the shooting

Letting the F.B.I. investigate this is like letting the fox guard the hen house

The dudes dad called police, RIGHT AFTER HE HEARD ABOUT THE SHOOTING, because he knew his son had an AR-15, and he couldn't get a hold of him immediately! Like, what the actual??? WHY would his dad IMMEDIATELY think his own son did it, when he was supposed to be at a shooting range and feasibly wouldn't be able to hear his phone ringing, or even have it on him? The kid could have feasibly left his phone in the car if he knew he was going to be shooting for a while, for all his dad knew! But, nope! His dad called police because HE THOUGHT HIS SON MAY HAVE BEEN THE SHOOTER! I'd be looking a hell of a lot harder at that whole thing! His dad obviously had REASON to think his son was the shooter!

Can we talk about how hate speech affects the mentally ill?

Both parents are licensed mental health professionals -- and didn't noticed any red flags with their son who lived with them?

So he purchased a ladder? So why are some saying the ladder was part of that building he climbed up on? So did he drag that ladder there? What is the actual truth to this story? No one noticed him carrying a firearm and ladder?

So in America a 20-yr old can buy bullets but not beer.

CNN needs to focus on why agents even allowed that roof to be unsecured. The very fact the building was FULL of police officers standing around doing NOTHING while an assian climbed on the very roof top of the building they were in. Talk about incompetence!

Who told him that roof top was clear? One would think that rooftop would have been covered by an agency.

The only question I have is why is the Secret Service chief still in their job.

Ask yourself, how did he know to buy a ladder. In order to know he needed a ladder, he would have to have known that the building roof would be clear for him to use. No one would have ever assumed that the roof of that building would have been safe from secret service occupation or surveillance without inside information. How obvious do things have to be???

How did he know that the roof would not be protected?

Everyone is putting this all on the secret service while overlooking the epic failure of the local and possibly the state police. As a retired police officer, I have worked several presidential and highly valued persons like the Pope and Nelson Mandala security details. I'm here to say the secret service works on a three tear system in alliance with those other law enforcement officials. Especially now after learning the local police who were responsible for securing the outer perimiter and had a police detail stationed in the exact building, to me the focus should be on the local police department...

One interesting thing is that he bought a ladder on his way? Does that not imply he believed he was going to be able to get roof access? Given it is a rural area and there the best building in the area for a sniper was left on guarded and unoccupied? There is simply no way to over look that building and not have someone on top. That level of incompetence isn't really possible. Other reports are that he was spotted as suspicious 26 minutes before. police took pictures of him even. They were not sure if he was carrying a scope or binoculars.

If they had some type of communications like walkie talkies, The police near the building could have immediately notified the secret service officers located at the podium to take Trump to a secure place or take him down behind the metal shield in front of the podium until the threat had been investigated.
