The problem is the market (supply and demand), there are just too many English tutors on Italki. The same goes for Spanish, a lot of Spanish tutors made exactly the experience you had as an English tutor. I think that's why Italki is accepting fewer tutors and teachers at the moment.
What equipment do you need to have in order to teach? And what's the mode of teaching? Is it like uploading documents on screen for the students to view or you just hold your teacher's notes and then explain therefrom?
Honestly I found it a little difficult at first. It is not something that you get used to at a go. So I would say when accepted take time to learn about the system.
