Evil fey are a bigger pain than expected. Imagine if a lich found out about the value of those shoddy souls. The lich should definitely steal one or both of the hag's prized possessions, preferably using mortal adventurers. Haggy could have her own duped party going for his phylactery. Everyone's boss appears in the monster manual somewhere.

Will you be covering all hag types? I especially want to hear about Black Annis and Sea Hags, and what the books don't tell you about them!

Keep in mind that a powerful night hag can be a warlock patron. Also there seems to be a connection between a night hag and both succubi as well as erynies.

In 3.5e Unapproachable East they introduced the playable race called the Hagspawns. They are the male children of hags, half-human outcasts feared and hated by normal humans. They are big, strong and hardy, but sullen and ill-tempered. They carry much resentment inherent from their monstrous parent, which is often further made stronger by the distrust they receive from common people.

An interesting note about artificers. At level 14 they get magic item savant which allows an artificer to attune and use magic item with restrictions on race, class, spell or level. Since hags are a race artificers can use the heartstone.

I always figured that, while Devils are certainly a threat to the multiverse, Demons are the far bigger danger, because Demons, while they can claim souls and turn them into more Demons, Demons can just as frequently spawn from nothing but the Chaos of the Abyss. So, if the Abyss was somehow wiped out at some point, the Devils would certainly be dangerous, but the forces of the upper plains would no longer have a reason to tolerate their existence and, in a combined effort, be able to ultimately wipe out the Devils. So, in my campaign settings, it's always the case that Asmodeus is purposefully keeping the Blood War going on forever, while he schemes to conquer the multiverse behind the scenes.

currently using a night hag for my campaign as a mid-level BBEG. I'm exploring the magic, potion-brewing, cursing aspect of this monster but it's kinda hard to find really good and balanced options. Thanks for this video, it definitely gave me some inspiration

Actualy Hags can have sons in the Neverwinter realm, but they are ussualy used by them as mere servants and not cared about at all, because they're useless to them otherwise.

I love your long videow man! Especially this one! Hags are among my favorite D&D creature. Along with Dragons, particularly Chromatics, and Demons, Devils, especially the Lord, and Dukes. And also Undesd. The Liches and Death Knights are my favorites there! Trolls are pretty cool too! Basically, I love things that can cause TPKs, fairly easily!

Do we know what happens to lawful or chaotic soul larvae since they are so hard to evolve ? Do fiends have any use for them ? Can a lawful evil person be directly turned into a devil above imp level with a contract with a devil to do so for his services ?

Back in the late 90's and 2000's, I had a campaign where I used a very powerful Night Hag as traveling merchant who discovered a way to mold larva into magical items which she would sell to adventures, The stronger the magical item, the more larva she had to use to mold the item, It thought at the time it was a great way to allow the PC's every couple adventures to go through the Encyclopedia of Magicia and if they could afford the gold, they could acquire an item I didn't put into the campaign myself, of course, at the DM's discretion, She couldn't create one of a kind magical artifacts, items that would require intensive rituals, or something you wouldn't expect a group of that level to have found naturally while adventuring, I took in consideration of the creatures they defeated along the adventure and what magical items they might of found which was absent to try and balance it out somehow but everyone liked the idea of being able to have her mold them an item they could of gotten but didnt, as long as they had enough gold for the transformation, I could of done more with this NPC and was going to, but our adventuring group started breaking down because of real world stuff and never got to finish the campiegn,

When I watched this last year, you gave me an idea for a campaign that I just can't let go of, despite being a novice DM, and not writing my ideas down, aside by running it by my friends. Thank you.

The different manuals gave some nice points to get started when crafting your story/game. It definitely gives way for interpretation in order to borrow from for a story teller. I loved the story that MrRhrexx has crafted from the various stories and resources. I would consider this lore a must watch for budding Dungeon Masters who want to see how to incorporate material into stories while maintaining cohesion and interest. I can see how this could be easily made into several different stories which would be fun to read or play.

I absolutely love these videos. You should look into epic level spells, there is a handbook for them from 3rd edition, and they are crazy! Either way, I always love learning more about these creatures and the lore crafted over the years. I wish I knew how to look for all the info, there must be hundreds of books to pour over! I have a night hag villan called Greedta who want to take over the world

Alright this ducking app listens even if it’s off. Like way too many casualties, I’m playing BG3 I’m with the hag and I open the app to look for a guide and this shows up first, happened before with other words like paladin or warlock.

The best part of this video is pointing out that the Altraloth is a CR 20+, made a coven of hags... This feels so much better storywise than just being like, "Yeah. There's a God working against your plans. Go beat them down." Mostly because I feel like even if the party defeats the Altraloth; they might not know that it was made by a coven of hags; or which coven specifically; and that another one might come for them someday.

So since Night Hags and Succubi both start by showing up in people's dreams to corrupt them, what happens if they both start showing up in the dreams of the same person? Do they start fighting it out over who get the soul? Do they mess with each others dreams so that they don't work? Mr Rhexx its time for you to start writing adventures for WOTC. Hags are the evil grandmas of the dnd world

It's interesting for me that night hags used to be of the "feywild," which I'm assuming is elfdom, and they can straddle a mortal's body to create nightmares. The older German word for nightmare is Albtraum or "Elf Dream," where legend would have it a nightmare was made when an elf sat upon your head at night.

Hmm, Hag Daughters are candidates into becoming Sorcerers and will always have black hair... Wonder if they might weave that into Yennefers back story for later seasons of the Witcher. I know if I ever do any GMing, I had planned on a character loosely based on her to use as a quest giver/plot anchor. What could be a more interesting as a test for low level players then having you kill the local hag. then find out the sorceress and hag where sisters.

I'd love to see Esme Weatherwax, who's Lawful Good in spite of herself, go up against these guys - with help from Gytha Ogg of course, who's far more powerful in some ways...

If you're wondering how this makes sense in conjecture with other things that seem to directly contradict these things, that's not Mr. Rhexx's fault but the inconsistencies between editions or even within the same edition. F.e. taking just this video and his last, you may say that there's an inherent contradiction between 'All evil souls end up in hell as worms' and 'Souls go to the fugue plane to be judged, can be collected by their god (which includes the evil ones!) and those that aren't collected after 10 days are added to the blue mold wall.'. But wait, the fugue plane's system doesn't seem to feature any judgement based on alignment, as you're either accepted by your god or don't leave the plane ever, with devil bargains and demon raids as the exception. Even the most virtuous samaritan ends up in the wall if they were an an unfaithful samaritan, because if there's no worship required then surely some god short on souls would accept all the unwanted souls for themselves? Souls aren't judged nor punished for evil but for agnostic or atheistic behaviour, with assumption that the evil god punishing their followers for their evil acts. Which makes no sense, why would those evil gods want to be the destination no one wants to end up, just because the good gods want them to be this? If any evil god promises a cushy afterlife after a life of doing evil and whatever you will, they'd get all the worshippers. Welp, that's just the inconsistencies of the editions, both inter-editionally and internally. Especially in 5e, it's up to us DMs to decide what we like best and how we use it. Remember, Mr. Rhexx gives us the 1-4e lore on the topic as best as he can, but it's still up to us to choose the finest cuts and our own preferred takes from it. Because after 5 editions and a lot of inconsistencies, we simply cannot do D&D lore right because it will always contradict itself in some regards. My personal take on night hags would be to combine the two: The souls of powerful evil beings that have a god that would take them, is stolen by the night hags so it never goes through the fugue plane to be claimed. Never too beloved to earn them the god's ire, but if it would make for a good sale then they will do it. So especially evil people that recently rejected their evil god should worry, for if a night hag sniffs them out then they are quickly snatched up while they're still free picking. And for 5e's good souls, I'd homebrew lore that this is the devils now having made a deal with night hags that any good-aligned and faithful people that made a devil pact with their soul to be collected upon death, will see a night hag kill them and claim their soul to be sold to the devils without going through the fugue plane and create an issue if their good god would get there first or contest their claim.

Here's a fun origin you might not know about the word "Nightmare" In Swedish Nightmare is called "Mardröm", translated as "Hag Dream" "Mare" and "Night" are probably originally loanwords from ancient Norse. Mare comes from "Mara" meaning "Hag". "Night" is obvious, so we wont need to go on with that. Concluding all of this we get the old meaning of "Nightmare" being literally "Night Hag". Sleep tight

This got me thinking, the night hags in curse of strahd. Could they capture strahd's soul before it flies back to the dark powers? They could even help the PCs achieve victory over strahd and then Swipe his soul. They could then sell it to a devil and you really would have the devil Strahd! I see devil strahd coming back big, bad with red horns.. and a few scores to settle

Never had to fight a hag for a long while. Everyone had a groan of pain whenever it was just revealed that we were talking to one. Facing a coven with a level 3 party... I now know why. Just getting poisoned is a pain in the ass.

I have a Hag-spawn NPC that "somehow" stopped the process of becoming a Hag. Now I have an explanation of how she remained human... for the most part. Her main foil is her twin sister who became a Hag. Her partner is her older brother, and they are monster hunters. And yes, I based their story loosely on Handsel and Gretel. Only the ones lost were the twin girls and the "witch" did eat them both. The older brother "found" his younger siblings, somehow magically transformed into infants again. Now I want to really update that adventure (and characters) I created in the 80s. Thanx.
