Very similar to me! My level 16 group is a few sessions away from facing the Demogorgon. The campaign is focused around an ancient portal all the major demon lord's are competing for control of. Demogorgon came out on top but the group is about to awaken A solar who sealed the Portal the first time.

Same here I've got a campaign based around the idea that pale night made a demiplane tethered to the abyss that before it could be fully corrupted by the abyss was populated by The Lady of pain and wanderers from the infinite staircase. At this point there is one continent populated by humanoids and creatures like any other material relm if that's really what it was. Now pale night with aide from baphomet and zuggotmoy are attempting to rein this run away demiplane back under demonic controle while the gods, brought here by there followers try and wretch away one of the last remaining havens in a multiverse that's seen every other material relm swallowed by the abyss.

the reason is because dragons don't have "materials" whatever you harvest from a dragon is depending on your DM. DND isn't monster hunter after all and there isn't a selection of things you can get from every creature. especially since fighting a creature usually destroys those materials
@Voldrim359

@@joedatius As far as it goes with DnD, has a ton of variety of adventures and stories, like dungeon exploring, to participate in wars and sieges, even quest for relics and forgotten spells, there is no reason for monster hunting not be there, as there is a lot of monster you can fight in an adventure, even if they are dangerous

TSR was far more forthcoming on this. And dragons DO have materials. Their whole body. You can harvest every shred of their body that you didn't slash/pierce to infinity and back. In fact, I know older editions even specified exactly how much damage you could do with slash/pierce weapons before ruining the dragon's scales too badly to make armor from it etc., Anything that you didn't destroy in combat is there for the taking... it's a corpse not a mystery treasure chest.

The abyss is likely the most written about outer plane. I chalk this up to human nature and scary things being like moths to a flame. There's even a tavern in sigil with many alu-fiend and cambion workers that specializes in selling abyssal "tours" where rich patrons can buy a taste (a very tiny sip) of the abyss. They leave with tales of the (manufactured) horror they saw. Occasionally one or two get dragged off but too many would be bad for business so most make it back relatively safely... all carrying a new seed of evil in their minds to where ever their home worlds are. There they produce things like squid games to try and recreate that abyssal feelings. Truly a beautiful and majestic plane 😍. If there's something in this universe that you wish would tear your head off, spit down your throat and use your corpse as an object... its there and your not thinking grand enough!

It's actually true. It is said in Mordekainen's Tome of Foes that abyssal influence corrupts material plane. It took a while, but we eventually got some stuff on them in both 3rd edition (in Fiendish Codex I: Hordes of the Abyss) and in 4th edition (in The Plane Below - Secrets of the Elemental Chaos), it wasn't much mind you, but that is what is required for the Obyriths to be believable ancient horrors that feel like they would be right at home in Lovecraft's Mythos. Of course, it helps that one of them is literally from the Mythos (that being Dagon). But what we got was quite enough for me to think that Pale Night was clearly the coolest of them. When you encounter her, she looks like a beautiful lady of indeterminable race, veiled only in semi-transparent cloth and mists. However, should you manage to catch a glimpse of her true form if the veils part, well, you'd better have a really good will save. If you succeed, you are rendered blind and your brain deletes what you saw from your memory. If you fail.... Well, time to roll up a new character, because your character is now incurably insane of the gibbering fool variety. And when I say incurable, I mean it. Not even godly intervention or the most powerful wish spell will restore the character, their mind is *gone*.

Great video. You really tied all these disparate elements together into a single cohesive timeline. That's a huge project and I'm so impressed. I'm still confused by one thing though: How can there be infinite demons if they come from humanoid souls which are not an infinite source? I was under the impression that Demons were spawned from the Abyss itself.
@MrRhexx
@MrRhexx 2 года назад
Technically there are demons that are not Tana'ri yeah, though d&d doesn't really delve too deep into them. The word infinite is also probably a bit deceiving. A billion demons would look like an infinite number of demons to anyone, and then there's also the fact that the abyss might get new souls faster than it takes for ppl to kill the demons; i guess you could also technically call that infinite.
@elegantoddity8609
@elegantoddity8609 2 года назад
I'm pretty sure it's not actually infinite but more effectively so. There's no way to count them all since the layers are so factitious that they can absorb each other and end up splitting apart, and new ones can show up, so the number is always in flux. Also only some demons come from humanoid souls.
@TheHighestNoon
@TheHighestNoon 2 года назад
@@elegantoddity8609 Yes but Tanari are the majority of demons and it's literally only Chaotic Evil souls that fail to go to the realm of their chosen Deity for whatever reason.... That's going to be hardly any. Maybe the Shard of Pure Evil is stealing souls from countless other planes? Because otherwise I can't see why there would be any more Demons than Angels or Devils.
@TheHighestNoon
@TheHighestNoon 2 года назад
@@MrRhexx That's something I never really understood clearly, either. When a humanoid dies, doesn't their soul go to their chosen Deity? Devils get souls via contracts and corruption, but how do Demons get them?
@elegantoddity8609
@elegantoddity8609 2 года назад
@@TheHighestNoon Well not everyone in the dnd multiverse goes to a deity. Forgotten Realms setting has that stupid Wall of the Faithless for non believers but that doesn't apply to every world. In others you die and you go to the plane of most like alignment. I think the tanar'ri are most numerous because souls are much more "fertile" than a plane of pure entropy. It has something to work with and there's a whole universe of them to work with. The obyriths also suffered from bad life choices which drastically reduced their numbers before they got genocides several times. As for why demons outnumber everyone else, it's partially because they don't play by any rules. They don't bargain for souls, they straight up take them, dragging them off to the Abyss. Devils invade, demons infect. And good beings have a concern for free will that fiends don't share.
@shaurmiath6719
@shaurmiath6719 2 года назад
Really spectacular storytelling, there. Fun fact about 16:05 - there was actually one single Demon Lord among the Obyrith who did not swear fealty to the Queen of Chaos and chose to ignore her call to war, and even she didn't choose to attempt to force him. Dagon, Prince of the Depths is actually venerated as a god among the Kraken, the hags, and kuo-toa and water naga. Not sure if you were familiar with that little tidbit.

I love the concept of the Abyss. All my characters in d&d worship a primordial "god" that to me strongly ties with chaos. One of it's avatars is off the coast of Waterdeep. Even though it is not called an avatar in the cannon source material it still feels like one so I treat it as one. I even have a list of Deities that are effectively just different names for this being. I mention this only because while you where talking about the shard it reminded me of the deep crimson shard born of this being and used to wake the avatar from it's slumber.

Been waiting for a while for this video on the abyss and i love it since the abyss and the obyriths are like my favorite part of dnd lore. However, i believe you missed a few very interesting and wild things about the obyriths and some of their characters that couldve been mentioned (not all but some of these). Pazuzu (my favorite character in dnd); -real name known only by Lamashtu, demon lord of monstrous births. not even other obyriths know. -was the one who made the shard of evil or in other lore headed the creation of it. Either way the Shard of pure evil is his doing. -Pazunia can lead to literally anywhere on the abyss and he is the only one who can navigate it perfectly -Actually physically changed his form into something beautiful and has the Awe effect-on evil flying creatures-which is absolutely wild when you consider the fact that an obyrith's appearance has power in itself thats greater than even a tanarii like demo. -was the one who incited the dawn war (probably in order to weaken Tharuzdin, but lore doesnt say why) -was the one who made Asmo's ruby rod and help his rise (probably to save his fellow Oby's from Tanarii) and Pazuzu has a favor to call in from asmo when needed. Making Pazuzu an ally of Asmo and the two actually work together to influence the blood war to their needs. -The most ancient demon lords, including demo, know he's an Oby and yet they dont mess with him, in fact, Pazuzu is on good terms with literally every type of fiend (including the Dukes of hell and the yugos) and only has 2 enemies being Lamashtu (cause he messed her up after she betrayed him) and Gratzz which is only because of Pazuzus princely claim of the abyssal skies (even then Gratzz isnt like a nemesis more like a guy who just doesnt really like him). -Pazuzu didnt submit to the Queen of Chaos like the others but lore doesnt say why, but Pazuzu aint no punk. -Pazuzu is the most demon, devil yugo angelic demon character since alot of his actions are not always chaotic in nature. a sort method to madness to of vibe, really cool. Dagon -Like Pazuzu, Dagon remained out of the QoC's shenanigans and this time the lore says why. Cause even with her armies and Miska she still feared Dagon...which is wild. -Dagon makes no effort to hide his Obyrith identity and in fact loudly proclaims it. -Demo came to Dagon not the other way around. Dagon is seen by Demo (who lives directly above Dagon's lair, 89th layer the Shadow Sea) as a mentor. Dagon doesn't seek protection -Detailed in the Demonomicon, Dagon knows everything about the Abyss (even if you make homebrew lore he still knows). -Dagon doesn't actually care about the grand scheme of everything thats going on and he more less just vibes in the 89th -The denizens of the Abyss actually have a tradition of pilgrimage to Dagon's layer to meet with him. super interesting bit of lore. Pale Night -The consort can be inferred but i dont believe anything is stated out right. -She captured an entire generation of Eladrin on her layer for the bs the eladrin pulled after the war of L v C. -She vibes on Bapho's layer and the two agree to a defensive pact for convenience rather than being on any friendly terms -She is the ugliest thing the multiverse has ever known cause reality ITSELF cant comprehend her form so it just throws a sheet over her and if she ever removed it and a being gazed upon her they die instantly. The original world -There's a ziggurat (cant remember the name super complex) where the Obyriths meet every thousand years to discuss things. -There are 13 lords left (all named but not all detailed as far as im aware) and they form the Queen's Concordat (the name of the alliance) -This Ziggurat is consider haunted even by other demons and they stay away from it. The Ziggurat is also said to house the only portal in the multiverse that is still linked back to their original home. Ya just some tidbits on some-i guess 3-of the obyriths that i believe were missed opportunities to mention. Still loved the video and if any of the tidbits i mentioned are wrong i would love to know and where to find the info cause its so hard to find their lore or even visuals (which im trying to make more modern art for them-especially Pazuzu.)

The closest ruling I liked by a DM was that a dragon we had killed could only provide enough scales for one medium creature's armor. The explanation was that due to the sheer amount of damage done, and our combined lack of knowledge about descaling a dragon, we ruined a *lot* of the materials.

I've been playing around with creating a race native to the Shadowfell the Scath. While creating them I decided that I need to create an origin story for them. So I used an idea I had for an entity that feeds on dead gods. I haven't settled on a name yet, thinking maybe Scathach or Ungoliant or something similar. But the idea behind her is that she is a combination with a Obyrith and a Nightshade on steroids. She's basically a living black hole just sucking energy out of everything and leaving it dark and lifeless. In my head canon she's actually the one who created the Plain of Shadows before it became the Shadowfell. Her back story is that she was created accidentally by Obox-ob and is one of the reasons why their world was falling apart. Wen the Obyriths came to the world she followed them. Though none of them realized that she had done so. All except Obox-ob, who found out after he was defeated and is happily keeping this information to himself. Personality wise she isn't evil she's chaotic neutral. Her primary goal is to finish what she she started by consuming the Obyriths. She also wants to drag the entirety of Abyss into the Negative Material Plain and reshape it into a realm for her children. For the most part she lives in the Negative Material Plain to mitigate her affect on the Prime Material Plain only poking small pieces of herself into various places that she wants to interact with and to feed. She appears as a woman made of Shadows with 4 large arms with long claws on her hands 3 fingers and 2 thumbs. She has a crazy mane of hair with 2 small horns on her forehead. She has 2 massive antlers just above her long pointed fury ears and she has 3 eyes. Her lower body is a massive tail that stretches out to nearly an infant length and has long finger like legs tipped with claws running along it. The back side of the tail is covered with fur and eyes can open on any part of it.

@@joedatius please explain because I will pull it or change it if you can help me see why it would be. Berserk was huge for me, and I have reading the Manga since the 90s. The subject matter is in regards to beasts that are superficially similar to the apostles. The last line was a reference to the opener of original anime, and the fact that Berserk will not be completed by him

I just have a really big interest in otyughs and neo otyughs, and I was wondering if you would be willing to make a video of "what they don't tell you about otyughs/neo otyughs"? Thanks for reading this and considering this idea!

Nice piece of lore! It makes sense... there is no such thing as a war of Law vs Chaos, it's just an infinite tavern brawl of chaos vs law, chaos vs good, chaos vs evil, chaos vs neutral & chaos vs chaos. And BEWARE of Chaos in this mess, cause it bites!

Immediately bought ny copy of this book. We can always count on you to give us stuff that DND wont. You should make this a series of books for yourself dude, Id definitely buy them. It coupd get risky with licensing and profiting but maybe you could figure something out? You deserve it for all your hard work. I miss The Dragon Fire Adept from 3rd Edition. Sigh. Easily my favorite class.

I also absolutely adore the genius idea in Rolling with Difficulty (MAJOR SPOILER FOR ROLLING WITH DIFFICULTY SEASON 5) where they're trying to fly out of the crystal sphere of the planescape, but they need to go at incredible speeds and for that, they essentially need a really long starting ramp. An infinitely long starting ramp. So for that they need a truly infinite plane with infinite layers. So they're gonna have to sail down the infinite layers of the abyss because nothing else in the planescape is long enough. Idk, I just think it's neat. Austin is an awesome DM.

0:10 I was under the impression that that was the Elemental Plane of Fire? A place which instantly obliterates anything without fire immunity - including every magic item less than an artifact. In fact, if you have fire immunity, you will still be incinerated - the immunity must be magical. It's the cosmic source of energy for the inner planes, and all matter therein. That's something I learnt on this channel

Demons are depicted, in my mind, as the Great Old Ones. Seeing as They’re extra-dimensional, that makes them eldritch and impossible. Absolutely awesome.
@joedatius
@joedatius 2 года назад
I can see where you're going but DND already has their great old ones and thats the Aberrations. like star spawn, aboleths, and mind flayers, all of which are based on Eldritch stories
@crim1188
@crim1188 8 месяцев назад
Its your game and you can run it however you want but thats not really it. Demons are extraplanar in the same way devils, modrems, elementals, angels and so on are. Unless you plan to extend that idea to others I would recommend against it. If you want cosmic horror, you have aberrations for that. If they're not enough for you, you can come up with some eldritch monstrosity. In a setting like this "alien" doesnt mean extraplanar like a demon. Those are beings with a clearly defined origin, reproduction and place in the cosmology. Aberrations are creatures from beyond the veil, things completely alien to the setting basically. Even in this video you have obiryths, which are horrifying eldrtich evil entities from another universe. They're classified as demons because they predate them as rulers of Abyss and its easier for them.

@@joedatius A second one after Fizban's? When was that announced? When was the last book dedicated to dragons? The only ones in 5e were the awful Hoard of the Dragon Queen, and Rise of Tiamat. Which had very little stuff about dragons in them. Oh sure, dragons were present. But you could probably change out all the dragons for another monster type without changing the story all that much. A demonic invasion for instance.
