So Chris Paddack was all over #PadresTwitter, and MLB news in general, last week. He gave an interview talking about how he got into analytics over the offseason and figured out there were things going wrong with his fastball. If you want an analysis of his fastball, anyone with even a little bit of knowledge could tell you his fastball was trash in 2020.
Paddack said the reason for this was a change in the way it moved. That's why he wasn't able to put up a performance like he did his rookie year in 2019 for the San Diego Padres. The thing is, I think there's more going on than just a difference in fastball movement. Is it his arm action? Is it his changeup? Is it...? Guess you'll just have to watch and find out.

The good news is that Chris Paddack will be the #5 starter this season. So the pressure of being the #1 won't be there. He's healthy and looks like he has even put on some weight! I'm pulling for 'the Sheriff' to recapture his 2019 form, but if he can't the Padres have DEPTH. His deputies will pick him up....

FYI, Chris Paddack started today against the Cubs in Peoria AZ. He went two innings and didn't allow a hit. He did issue a walk, but stuck-out three. Pretty good for his first outing of Spring Training!

@@yankeesam11 Sure, it's way too early to write that the Sheriff is back, still today was a positive beginning. Paddack only threw 22 pitches, so he got ahead in counts. The Cubs’ only baserunner came on a two-out walk in the first inning. Paddack started that frame by getting Anthony Rizzo to chase a two-strike change-up for the first out and ended it by getting Javier Báez to swing through an elevated fastball. His other strikeout came in the second inning when David Bote missed a change-up.

@@jasona9 I personally believe that pitchers are always ahead of position players to begin the season, especially in spring training. Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

If he can get some consistency (and confidence) with the curve and get his fastball back, he could make a nice comeback. The curve occasionally plays as a plus pitch, but he doesn't have the consistency with it yet. He didn't have a curve at all until he hit the bigs.

I think he’s at least a #3 starter. The k rate was still pretty good last year and the walk rate is elite. Last year he had an unsustainably high hr rate and hr/fb rate inflating his numbers in a small sample size.

I've seen this dude pitch since he got to SD. The huge difference in the two years he's been in SD are two things. His reluctance to pitch inside and location. That's it. He does need a third pitch, but he can be successful with two pitches when his change up is so good. Problem is.... He had no inside pitch all last year and batters just laid off the change. His location was dreadful and he got lit up. His pitching coach never did a damn thing to help him With the additions of Snell, darvish he'll learn from watching these guys. He has to throw INSIDE and then expand the zone to keep the hitters at bay.

The thing is Snell and Darvish have way bigger arsenals than Paddack does, so I'm hesitant to say pitching with better accuracy will fix him completely. I understand what you're saying though, hope you stay part of the community!

Problem is, for him to dominate with 2 pitches he needs to have his best stuff, and no pitcher has his best stuff every time out. Aces have a repertoire which allows them to still have success even when their dominant stuff isn't working.

excited to see more from weathers. the fact he made his debut in that big playoff game against the elite dodgers and handled himself i think he will be a solid arm for us.

If he continues to struggle I don’t see him as a starter he can be a relief pitcher he only has two pitches mainly anyways

Agreed. We have other arms (Morejon, Weathers, Gore) that would love to take his spot. Having said that, if he can turn it around, we'd have a good 4/5 combo with Musgrove.

appreciate the breakdown bro, he's one of my top keepers in my fantasy league (17th round cost), and i'm debating whether or not to drop him! This video helped better explain what might be happening behind the scenes with him, what to keep an eye out for, outside of just the box score numbers. Not that it's a big deal, as you've got over a K, but def gained another sub. Keep up the great work bro. Dope overlay btw

Do you know if he throws the change 4 seam or 2 seam (i don't)? You made a good point that the 2-seam fastball might be easier to hit for whatever reason. If the fastball and change used to both be 4 seam the ball would have looked the same to the hitter, but the change-up would have been slower and deceiving. If the fastball has the big seams spinning (2-seam) a hitter could recognize it early and anticipate the velocity difference. Either way, cool video. Thanks.

I wonder if max Meyer will struggle for the same reasons. Although now that I think about it his fastball and slider were given an elite rating and he does have an above average changeup

Hopefully Paddack also realized what you did about the change, and laid out the other explanation as a decoy. Why give the opposition the secret to your success. make them figure it out themselves.

Personally I think he’s overrated....hyped way too much two years ago with the cowboy hat and boots. Padre fan here that feels he ll b in the bullpen by mid july

It looks like the numbers you show have his BA vs. his change up lower in 2020. The problem was the fastball. Yankee fans commenting on Padres players? When did this become a thing? Not a welcome sign.
