I didn't know about the Sawyer, good idea, I have used a personal filter with it's own bottle but the Sawyer looks great, I used my filter religiously in Thailand one time and it was the one and only time I didn't get the trots there!!! Thanks
I do that for everyday I live in Los Angeles when I didn't have my zippers locked my lifelong anxiety started kicking into overdrive and I would constantly check my backpack every 5 mintues but now that I have travel locks on them I feel my better and my anxiety has lessened when I'm out and about with my backpack.
I have been watching your videos for sometime, starting with the India part and i really like the real nature of your videos. I have been showing the videos of India to my boyfriend who I take around there soon. Especially Hampi, I am so excited to go there. And your travel pack list is quite a sound one give or take. The locks I find quite practical for India but what made me write to you is the green ointment cream thing you showed in the video. if I am not wrong, it is "Boroline" and I swear by that thing and it was cool to see that. And I just read that you got robbed in Colombia and it made me wonder that travellers like "us" if I may take the liberty to say so, just happen to have such an experience at some point in their lives. I still don't believe that I was so stupid and not conscious for 1 min and my wallet was gone but it makes me realise that life goes on and the things you love, you keep doing, gain some more insight but you go on. That was very uplifting for me to realise. Thanks and keep the good work going! :) P.S. If you happen to travel in the east of Germany, would like to have a talk with you! And see your view of Dresden :)
Id probably recommend to sleep with your bag & have it under the blanket you, Always felt a little uneasy with it under the bed whilst on the top bunk sleeping. Even if locked to the bed post or whatever with a bike lock. That’s just me
If there aren't lockers where I could lock my valuables, then I'll put my wallet, passport, phone, camera and other important things in my smaller day pack and have that on the bunk with me. But I wouldn't want to have my big backpack on the bed while sleeping, takes up too much space.
The beauty of traveling is that you will meet new friends, learn / experience ew things. So you will be busy all the time . E. G. You plan your day trip, talking to locals , you randomly joint others trips or adk them to share a taxi etc
You are always in contact with people traveling 'alone'. Actually, you are NEVER alone as soon as you are leaving your room🤣🤣🤣👍. They'll notice you. And want to talk to you🤛👍
I kind of like how light he packs. I got rid of packing cubes because I started to realize that they make me pack more clothes instead of less. I should consider doing without makeup and only pack eyeshadow, eyeliner and chapstick. Nothing else.
Hey Gabriel, thanks so much for all the amazing content. Hey when you do your videos, could you mention how the weather has been and the time of year you are there? It would be super helpful I think!
Thanks. My videos are always uploaded soon after they were filmed, so for the time of year you can just check the date the video was uploaded in the info section below the video and it was probably filmed within a few days before that, including this one. There are some exceptions, but most were posted around the same time they were filmed.
I am planning to travel to Goa in early December. I don't need anything fancy, but am concerned about finding a place to stay. Your thoughts? Thank you.
Kevin Belden There are a lot of different places in Goa, dozens of different towns all up and down the coast, so it depends on where you're going. I've been to Benaulim and Arambol which were both really nice, but opposite parts of the state. Arambol is in the north, Benaulim is in the south and there's a lot in between. You'll have no problem finding accommodation. Either you could try online using hostelworld or booking.com, and see if you have any luck there, or else just show up and look around. I basically never book in advance in India and I always find somewhere that works and is super cheap.
Good idea having different bags for sets of belongings. I always use plastic bags but the bags you are using are much better (made of a material, easily close them etc), Where did you them from (eg yellow one) ?
True Mexico The light brownish cloth one I actually made myself, almost 20 years ago. I made some pants from the same material (hand sewed them) but the pants are long gone. Oh I guess you mean the little bright yellow one. I'm not sure actually. I got them all at different places. I think that one is a rock climbing bag for putting chalk in.
This is excellent sharing! I've been wondering what are the essential things in travelers bags. What about laundry Gab? Do it at the laundromat? Hand wash? So you just use an ATM when you need cash? Or traveler's checks?
Yes I just use an ATM. Nobody uses traveler's checks anymore. I recommend taking a few hundred dollars (or euros or pounds, etc.) in cash for emergencies, but otherwise use an ATM and you'll get the local currency at a fair exchange rate. Be sure to inform your bank where you're going. As for laundry, it depends, I hand wash a few things but otherwise use the washing machines available at a hotel or hostel or else ask around for where there's a laundry service nearby.
hey,Gabriel. just for an example how much were you paying for the room you were staying in? I'm planning to travel and after studying i found your channel is very helpful and down to earth. thanks
what are you favorite books about traveling and hitchhiking? I love Kerouac, but dont know much else... any recommendations? Also, what did you like the best? India? Nepal? Mexico?
Here's a list of some of my favorite travel books: One For the Road; by Tony Horwitz (about a guy who hitchhikes across the Australian outback) Neither Here Nor There; by Bill Bryson (about traveling around Europe, hilarious) On the Road; by Jack Kerouac (great travel reading, despite all the hype) Tracks; by Robyn Davidson (a woman camel treks across Australia) Never Cry Wolf; by Farley Mowat (a man lives in the Canadian wilderness and studies the behavior of wolves) Into the Wild; by Jon Krakaeur (about the life of Chris McCandless, who hitchhikes and wanders across North America for two years, before tragically dying of starvation in the Alaskan wilderness) Hucleberry Finn; by Mark Twain (a major influence on my interest in travel) The Secret Hunters; by Ranulph Fiennes (one of the most gripping reads ever) Shantaram; by Gregory David Roberts (amazing fictionalized story of an escaped Australian convict's life in underworld Bombay) Dove; by Robin L. Graham (true story of a 16-year-old boy who sails around the world solo) The Lord of the Rings; by J.R.R. Tolkien (well, duh! the ultimate adventure story)
Gabriel Traveler awesome, thanks man! gonna check them out... btw I think I've now watched almost every video on your channel haha.. Thanks and stay safe
Here's a video in which I show the backpack I just bought, it's 75 liters: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--OQK95Tqz1k.html It depends on where you're going, if it's to warm places you don't need as much clothes and so a smaller backpack could be just fine. Basically something medium-sized such as the one I got is good, because then you have extra room for versatility in case you do need more stuff, but it isn't so big that it's a pain.
Why would you not want to take tent, sleeping bag, matress on your budget trip as this equipment is the most useful to make your travel low cost as you dont need to pay each night for accommodation and so on...
I recently camped and biked on the Greek islands, and I also brought a tent my first trip to Europe. It depends on where I'm going but many places such as Mexico then I wouldn't want to camp that much and carrying a tent and sleeping mattress is a bit of a hassle, especially if you don't use it a lot. Somewhere like this place I'd rather be in an enclosed room then camping with the wind, rain and sand, etc.
in my opinion the lock in hostels is way to overrated. ive stayed in over 50 hostels and never lock up my stuff. its not worth worrying about it all the time, cuz travelers arent thievs.
+Crosssover92 Yeah, it's up to each person, but stuff does still happen, I've talked to people who had things stolen at hostels, and I've had a lot of stuff ripped off in my life. So it's just for piece of mind, some added security. Chances are nothing will happen, you just never know. It's always a surprise when you do get robbed.
+Gabriel Traveler wow, men thx4 the allmost instant answer:) ...well i guess all2gether would be at least 40pound up. im just curious, im planing my own trip right now. and i needed a ruf guess. thx. have a awesome journy ! :D do you use solarpanels on your trip?
Mawas Esned I've never used solar panels but certainly thought about it for charging my laptop and camera. One of those things you could throw over the top of your pack while out and about during the day would be pretty handy.
+Gabriel Traveler for that use i can really recommend the goalzero solarpanel 7" or the 10", i got the package with the battery charger and storage. really great! light, tough and kind of waterproof. i iused it on a boat trip and charged my phone/tablet/gopro and headlight. u can even charge AAs&AAAs Batteries. how do u manage to upload your movies? I guess the movies are around 200-400mb big. (?) more or less. do u use mobil networks or mostly wifi?
Mawas Esned Nice, that sounds pretty convenient for charging. Yeah my video files are around that big usually. I don't have a smartphone so I upload from my laptop using wi-fi in hotels, hostels and restaurants. It can be tough in some places but things are improving quickly even compared to a couple years ago. So most places I'm able to upload no problem, at worst it might take a couple of hours but usually quicker than that. On the trek in the Himalayas though it was mostly impossible, way too slow of connection speeds.
luka_____ Not specifically but you never know. I would definitely like to explore eastern Europe and the Balkans someday as I've never been to that area.
Here is a weird public comment, I hate taking a lot of cloths with me. To reduce the need for clothes changes, I will pack two travel size spray bottles. One has alcohol and the other has my favorite lotion smell. I will not do a wash, I simply spray my shirts , pants. The alcohol kills everything. I don't have to haul a heavy, stuffed case. Using this system, I guarantee, u will look and smell better than anyone else u will meet on the road. Think it through. The people u meet r in transit. The people helping u for their job, r looking at people that r in transit. No one will focus on u . No one cares. When home I will then wash. The use of these chemicals have served me well.
Hey Gabe, have you ever had a life threatening situation in one of your travels? I am trying to decide if i should bring a gun with me or not on my travel across the US.
Do not do this. Every state has a different law and you will eventually wind up in a state that does not allow you to carry without a permit. Im a US citizen, spent 23 years in the military and have traveled the world many times over and to places that are far more dangerous than any place in the US. You do not need to carry a gun anywhere, just common sense. Safe travels!
