My best tip for first year teachers: Create a Craiglist alert for retiring teacher garage sales during the summer. These are goldmines! You will find loads and loads of classroom supplies and books-all for very cheap!

Thank you everyone! I keep an alert on my craigslist account for 'teacher' under the garage sale section on craigslist. Every summer there are 2-5 garage sales for teachers who are retiring in my area. They have LOADS of classroom stuff-and always lots of books! The retiring teachers are always so gracious and deeply discount their things...I think because they know everything will be put to good use, and because teachers are the most giving people on the planet. :)

One tip for electric pencil sharpeners, don’t let anyone sharpen colored pencils. The waxy colored part gets stuck in the sharpener.

Hi Michelle! I am a primary school teacher in the UK. I teach Year 1 (5-6 year olds) I am always amazed and interested to learn what your US teachers have to purchase for the classroom. It is very different over here - we rarely have to buy anything for our rooms at all - everything is provided by the school. We might buy the occasional treat for the class to make it look great like an ikea tent or a nice rug. Love watching your videos and even though I don;t comment very much, thank you for all of the effort you put in!
@csalebra
@csalebra 6 лет назад
It definitely depends on the school district and resources available... In the U.S. the school budgets are made based on property taxes. Meaning if you live in an affluent area where you property taxes are $10,000+ the schools are always AMAZING and have everything they need. But, where my parents live most property taxes are sub $1500, which means there is less funding available for schools and teachers there end up spending a lot of their own money.

My advice to first year teachers is to hold off on all spending until you first talk to your principal and other teachers about how spending works at your school. You need to find out what the school already provides each teacher/classroom. Also, ask about requisitions and how much money each teacher is provided for the year. This differs from school to school. Obviously, some schools have more money and will be able to fulfill more of your needs (and sometimes those "wants" if you're lucky). My district's teachers submit a requisition "wish-list" in the Spring. Many of us use School Specialty, but we can requisition anything from anywhere (Walmart, Target, etc.). Our administration looks over each teacher's "wish list" and then either approves it entirely or modifies it (you might lose your daybed, for example ;). Since this requisition process happens at the end of each school year, new teachers missed that opportunity. However, and depending on the school, they might still get a chance to submit an order. They may or may not tell you this so ask! The nice about the school ordering items each year is that this stuff *should not* be leaving with the outgoing teacher. So our new teachers never start from scratch. Plus, if something's not there (a stapler, for example) all anyone needs to do is ask around. Our school secretary always places an order of back-up general supplies available to anyone. If your school doesn't have a general supply, turn to other teachers in the building--someone somewhere will have extra items they'll gladly hand over. During the school year, you might realize you need something. Here too, talk to your admin. At my school, we can fill out a requisition form and submit it to our principal and business manager. Our business manager will let us know if we can place the order or not. I know some teachers who buy stuff and *then* bring their receipts to the business manager to see if he/she can be reimbursed. Never hurts to ask! Bottom Line: Don't spend until you know what's been left over for you, if the school has a general supply for you to take from, what other teachers can hand over (seek out retired teachers, especially for decorations!!!), and how much (if any) money is granted each year to each teacher towards requisitions (this likely changes). And ask how that requisition process works.

I’m a substitute and our school does the 2 bins per room. Some teachers want to use their own bins because they match the room so they have a few extra bins in storage so if you are nice and ask them they’d probably just bring it one day when they are cleaning the room. Especially if your bins are normally on the fuller side. Some schools may only allow 2 bins to control plastic bags so they may not do it even if you have your own bins.

I think I spent close to $4,000 my first year in special education. We were not even provided curriculum so I had to buy levels for every student. My first year classroom budget was $180.00. We still have to use our classroom budget to buy ink for our school printers and for every copy we make at school it is 3 cents. Recently, my dad and made donations through his work. The last couple of years that supplemented my classroom budget by $1000.
@elisemoser
@elisemoser 6 лет назад
Wow, I've worked in some pretty stingy school districts (one where we had to log into the printer and had a quota each month) but this is beyond anything I've ever heard. Especially in special education, where in my area is coordinated by a separate entity and contracted out to school districts. Thank you for all that you do! Teachers should never have to spend that much of their own money on their classrooms but in the meantime while we all work to improve the system I'm thankful that teachers are willing to do what it takes to give kids the education they deserve.

The Xacto School Pro pencil sharpener is the best! A teacher on my team and I have had one for a few years and they quit sharpener this year. We called Xacto and found out it has a 10 year warranty! We didn't have our receipts but they still sent us a brand new sharpener! They told us to just throw away the old one, however for only $8.50 on Amazon we bought new blade assemblies. It was super easy to swap them out and now we each have two amazing pencil sharpeners to start the school year with! Also, instead of sending your trash can to the nurse use an empty Clorox wipe container. Line it with a Walmart bag and wrap over the top. Kids can hold it against their mouth so there's no splatter and when they are finished, just tie the bag closed and throw it out. We also send them home with kiddos when they are throwing up so no messes in the car. They work great!

Very helpful ideas. I am retired now, but I remember the early years very well. There were two things I found helpful in my classroom. One was I also used fabric to cover bulletin boards, but burlap was my favorite. It comes in several colors, and it can be bought by the yard. Love the texture. Check fabric prints, too. I had designated boards for my two subjects, math and science, and there are all kinds of fun designs to go with the subject in general or to switch out to match your unit. Everything from frogs to spiders to planets are so fun and colorful. Many times these can be found in the remnant bin if your store has one. My Walmart does. Math prints can simply be numbers or shapes and left up all year. My second suggestion is for inexpensive dry erase boards. These are more widely available these days, but when I started teaching they were hard to find and expensive. Go to a home improvement store like Lowe's or Home Depot and ask for white board or shower board. These come in very large sheets, but the store will cut it for you. Some stores have changed the cutting policy, so try another location or tell them you are a teacher. It usually works! I had them cut approximately 10x12 inches for individual use, 10x24 for partners, and table size for group work. You can decide on sizes based on what you need and make the best use of the whole sheet. Take your dimensions with you. Mine were smooth on the edges, but you can sand them if you need to or add duct tape to the edges. I used orphan tube socks as erasers. Easily machine washed, and the markers can be stored inside. These usually work better with good quality dry erase markers like Expo, but an occasional cleaning with dry erase board cleaner or a magic eraser might be needed. I used them for 5 years, then I passed them down to a new teacher when I retired.

Can you do a video on how you grade student work and keep a grade book? For example, how you use homework towards their overall grade, how much you weigh different types of assignments, what you choose to grade vs. what you have students do but don't take as a grade. How do you grade written response questions? Anything along those lines would be greatly appreciate. Love your videos!!!

Oh my gosh! I am entering year 12 and I just had a giant yard sale of junk I inherited from retirees and never used. New teachers should also be mindful that if you are a new hire you may inherit a bunch of things from the teacher whose position you are taking. I got so many things from that teacher that I did not need student supplies for about 2 years. Also, as a former department chairperson (high school) I did purchase orders for department and always used the extra money leftover to buy extra basics which really helped new hires (and the people who were constantly running out of supplies), so DEFINATELY ask around before you go on a school supply shopping spree.

Classroom decorations is one that really gets me lol I want it to be cute but I don't want to spend a crazy amount of money! Also, as a first year teacher I really appreciate this video and the advice of encouraging us not to worry about having the classroom be perfect on day 1, as thats the pressure I've been feeling lately! Also guilty of multiple purchases and wanting to shop some more lol the struggle!
@elisemoser
@elisemoser 6 лет назад
If you can resist, try not to go overboard with buying decorations, because as soon as your kids come and the year starts you'll have their work to display, and that's FREE and way more authentic! You'll also be hanging up anchor charts that you create with your class and reference charts that support your curriculum. All of those things are way more important to creating a positive classroom community and promoting learning than cutesy and ridiculously expensive teacher decorations. I'm a second-year teacher but this is my first year with my own classroom (I was an interventionist last year) and letting go of the urge to decorate with inauthentic, pre-created decorations really took a load off my back. I can work on planning instruction and less on planning my classroom. Good luck to you in your first year!

Hello! I’m studying to be a dance teacher in Mexico and you motivate me a lot. I even wish dance lessons were in that kind of classrooms and all the stuff you can use. But I’ve been watching your videos and figuring out how I can use all of your tips in my field of teaching. Thank you for your love to teaching and your students. ❤️

I love watching your videos! For a while I have wanted to be either a Forensic Pathologist or an English 2/ World History/ Biology teacher it maybe even a 5th grade teacher! I love being able to inform people about subjects that I am passionate about. Your videos make me excited to get into a good college ( hopefully Baylor ! ), lately I have been wanting to become a teacher because of people like my younger siblings who’s teachers aren’t the best and can’t teach them because of their dyslexia, I want to be able to improve kids lives and enrich their presence on this earth!

I still have a few years to go before I'm done with college, but I've saved this video for when I'm getting ready to start teaching! Some things may change by then, but I don't think quality supplies will ever change drastically.

I wanted to add emergency kits, like basic bandaids. Most schools only give you a couple or you need to send your kid to the office. But for your own use(paper cuts) it’s nice to have a bandaid for new shoe blisters etc. I would also add you don’t need to buy classroom decor because as a new teacher I focused so much in getting the room pretty and ready that I didn’t know what I was going to teach the first month! My advice is read the student cum files and/or IEP and 504 plans first. Read your curriculum, plan your reading, math groups and talk to previous teachers they will know the kids and offer great information. One last thing I enjoy your videos very much even though I’m a special education teacher (Moderate/Severe) high school level I still find them useful and a joy. Thank you for making teaching easier by taking the time to post these videos. One last thing new teachers!! Send a postcard to your new students introducing yourself and welcoming them to your class they will enjoy it. A phone call also helps cement a good relationship with parents and kind of feel out parents concerns and expectations. Sorry I have one more thing decide what your communication with parents will be. As a special education teacher I can write daily behavior logs for my students in a general ed classroom you probably can’t do that so you might want a log that students can put what color they or behavior level they ended up at at the end of the day. I think this is really important to have a daily folder that goes home it teaches responsibility as well as makes communication with parents a breeze.

I was waiting for this video. I will start starting in a year and I have slowly been getting things like books and organization things so I don't need to get it all at once. For the teacher friend/ mentor my best friend's older sister is a teacher and she has been a great help already as I often asked her questions whenever I am in practicums.

I'm starting in August, at a middle school, so this video was great. Yes, the worst is having to wait, and just make lists. Most schools in Switzerland do provide all furniture, bins etc but obviously not deco and organisational items.

I loved this video! I'm done with my first year of teaching (thank goodness!), but this is still really helpful as I start expanding my Teacher Collection o' Crap. My personal advice for first year teachers: ask around. Ask your parents, ask your fellow teachers, ask your actual parents, ask your friends' parents. And get creative. It's amazing how many tin cans, yogurt boxes, shoe boxes, and other recyclables came in handy!

I teach PreK so I don't utilize my kiddos for cutting, most have never held scissors before but a huge tip is at open house I ask parents to mark whether they are willing to wash dress up clothes at home, cut out projects, or come in and cook with the kids. I love having parents to cut out items at home. Saves me a ton of time! Scotch laminator are amazing. Mine was $25 when I got it and my local PA Walmart has in store on clearance for $17 or &19!! I use $1 tables cloths since we don't have butcher paper. It's easy to staple right and cut excess off and I got my border for $1 at dollar tree. It's super thin but I was able to laminate it! LOVE YOUR CHANNEL! ❤️

I am so lucky to have a mom who is a veteran teacher so she saves a lot of stuff for my sister and I who are going to be first year teachers. From my mum's experience I can honestly tell you that you do not need to go crazy at Walmart/Target buying things you see on social media. Buy the basics, and go on from there. What one teacher finds useful, may not be useful for you. Cater your purchases to your needs. Also be on the look out for retiring teachers, they usually love to donate some supplies to other teachers. My best tip for you: build friendship with the custodians in your school. They know EVERYTHING that goes on in that school. If they see a teacher throwing something away, they might let you know if they think you might need it.

This video was very helpful! I already had a few of those items on my list to purchase (or find the "good" items I have somewhere around my house...I know I've got a great stapler and tape dispenser somewhere!). I'm in a situation where I'm teaching from a cart 90% of the time, and have a classroom for just 2 periods once a week, so while I'm super tempted to do some great decorating, I don't want to spend a lot of money for just two hours a week of class time. I'm hoping I can get my students (they are in grades 6, 7 and 8) to help me put some cozy touches on our room together!

My first year of teaching I had just moved from NY to VA. I had no extra money or time. I used the dollar store and whatever I found in my room and others. Didn't look like Pinterest, but it worked. I used any extra money to buy things for my students like scissors and personal whiteboards for activities. This year, I knew what I wanted and stayed in the same room and my mom helped out. So far, I feel much more prepared than last year and my room feels more like mine.

I'm going into my 7th year. I found this helpful! I was lucky to get the laminator and sheets on prime day! I seriously want a 2nd one now! And a paper cutter. My class is the farthest from the office. Also, we have construction going on this year...I don't think we have an office anymore!! 😱

I'm student teaching in the fall-winter (and another in the spring) and I've already been collecting things....especially books, target dollar spot items, etc! I started mid-year this year and TPT saved me. For the upcoming year, I ended up using my bonus to buy curriculum for the 3 preps I will be teaching next year. I’m not using them as-is, but I am using it as a guide. Plus, there were some good activities included. For example, I made my own activity to introduce a topic then used the included notes to summarize and the examples so I don’t have to make ppts from scratch :)

fantastic video, one tip I would give is to make sure you buy things that you can live with for a few years. So just like when you have a neutral coloured sofa, you can give it a new lease of life every now and again with different coloured throw pillows and throws. It's good to have items in the classroom that you know you can give new life to in a couple of years just by changing some little part of the decor.
