What To Carry On A Motorcycle - Over the years I tweak my carry kits for tools and supplies I take with me on my motorcycles. I always try and maximize the space available and cover the basics. First aid, tire repair and major damage control. Right now on my 2017 FZ-09 and 2014 FJR1300 both kits are identical with the FJR also including a compressor. My common parts are a cloth, zipties, paperwork, light, tire repair kit, multi-tool, bungee cord, medical first-aid kit and hand tools. Links below to my suggestions:
Bungee cords: amzn.to/2rm1yqt
Zip Ties: amzn.to/2rm0DGM
Light: amzn.to/2rlUwlF

Multitool: amzn.to/2suUECK
First Aid Kit: amzn.to/2tsIKqm
Compressor: amzn.to/2s6YVf5

I carry pretty much the same things on my bike. The one thing that I have actually used were zip ties. The last time I used them I was flying down U.S. 19 towards Clearwater and heard a loud bang. I didn't think anything of it until I went to downshift, touched nothing and saw the whole shifter scraping on the highway. I was able to zip tie it, put it in second gear, head to class and then to Home Depot afterwards to buy some bolts, nuts and washers which got me home.

I like a small, compact bicycle pump for my road kit. Might take 10 minutes to pump up a motorcycle tire with it, but it's one less electrical device to fail or need power I don't have if I find myself with a weak battery or whatever.

Hey, cool, i carry almost the same things. I have a honda cb300f so i can only carry so much. I have that air compressor, the tools, cig lighter, zip ties. I always ride with a backpack so i carry my flaslight there along with a 1/2in wide roll of 2 sided velcro. In my med kit i always carry some blood clot for when something serious happens.

Glad I saw this video. I had to plug my tire and blew a fuse on the bike with my air compressor. I wish I had known about the battery tender option.

I keep 2 Co2 canisters on my bikes. They have a kit that has a tire valve and a Co2 cylinder goes inside. Whole thing is smaller than multi-tool and 2 cartridges fill a motorcycle tire (except my Victory with 250 rear tire). Already saved a buddies ass.

I used the dynaplug on a ride and it held fine. I got home and let it sit for a few days to see how it held. Did fine. I then pulled it apart to replace the tire. I suspect how warn the tire is, and the hole size can affect how it lasts.

Around town I’ll have towing Out of town I carry the plug repair kit you said was to big and an micro air compressor. Rather ditch carrying other things and increase my chances of riding home. I’m in El Paso leaving your bike behind you might not have it when you come back. Speaking of bikes I just remembered I need to install my upshot exhaust

A thought on headlamps that you are going to put in a tool kit and not use in an ongoing basis. Avoid anything with a push button activation. Often these are controlled by a Microprocessor that continually monitors whether the button has been pressed or not. This will kill the batteries. If you really like the headlamp don't store the batteries in the unit. I like the energizer headlamps they use a mechanical switch so i don't have to worry about the batteries.

Fuses ! 2 of every kind needed for your bike and a fuse puller. Don't even bother going to the auto parts store, they charge WAY too much, Amazon sells kits with 150 fuses for about the cost of 2 fuses at the store. Most useful thing i carry so far has been the Li-Ion battery jumper, have used it to start a 6 cyl car and a Harley so far. For the FJR i installed a heavy gauge pigtail wire on the positive terminal so i could jump it without having to take apart the cowling, put a wire nut on the bare wire end so it can't short to the frame (very bad!). To jump it, put the black clamp on the frame, bare metal place. Some food bars and a "Space Blanket", ya never know.

I've had recommended to me to carry a CO2 tire inflation kit, that might be a suitably compact solution to carry in your new bike.

Suggestion: look into updated flashlight technology; Brands like Fenix, Olight have treated me very well and you get wayyyyyy more light and quality for your money. Related to lighting; I'd highly suggest using lithium batteries in lights that are sitting in heat/cold.

Ok I just watch your video, I bought an xsr900 a month ago and looked under the seat for tools and didn't see any so I ask the salesperson for it, he said he didn't know why they weren't there that he was going to order some for me etc etcetera, after I finished watching the video went to the garage and looked under the seat and the tools were attached to the seat just like yours that is funny.

I had a flat two weeks ago on my FJR. The Dynaplug only held up for 30 minutes and then it started leaking again. I had to stop at the next truck stop and purchase a regular car tire fix kit "RoadPro model RP017". The Dynaplug is garbage. It did not hold up after using it for the repair. I was so happy to have my FOBO Bike TPMS, which showed me the tire pressure going down after I got the nail in my tire and, then again, after 30 minutes after using the crappy Dynaplug.
@TwoWheelObsession
@TwoWheelObsession 7 лет назад
+Rick B as I said, it can take up to 4 of them in a hole. You obviously needed more than one. Works fine for me and many others :)
@rickb1444
@rickb1444 7 лет назад
I love your videos, but I have to disagree with your assessment. The hole was very small. I pulled out a small nail -- much smaller than the patch. I had to press hard to get the patch to go into the hole. The Dynaplug failed me when I needed it most. On the other hand, I used one single plug from the car kit and it worked perfectly. I believe that the difference is the glue that the car kit includes to use with the plug. I may sound a little angry, but that day was infuriating. I did everything correctly, including planning ahead and purchasing the Dynaplugs and storing them on on FJR. When I needed the Dynaplug to work, it let me down. I noticed that the package included a guarantee. I sent Dynaplug an email two weeks ago asking for my money back and they still have not responded. I will never buy Dynaplug again ever. The RoadPro RPO17 is less expensive and it worked with one application.

LOL you are right, you do sound angry ;) Sorry you had an issue, I hope you hear back from them. By all means carry whatever you like on your bike :)

I tried the CO2 inflaters and found they are just too small and don't have the volume needed to fill a tire. Each 16gram cartridge only raised the PSI by about 2 pounds and would need a pile of them to fill the tire.

TwoWheelObsession oh no. It's true. This guy was trying to make a u turn and then all of a sudden... bham! He's on the ground. Bike and all. He was so disappointed. You have to check out that video. I applaud him for not editing it out. But the take away from the incident is that he was prepared it, was physically unhurt.

I've been considering putting slime in my tires on my FZ just as a precaution. What's your opinion on this? Thought it would help in the even of catching a nail since I can't carry a compressor. But I don't want it to effect the weight of my tires or maybe it'll have no effect. Thoughts??

TwoWheelObsession yeah my 2017 fz09 has it stock next to the seat I had never seen it before on a bike from factory. Also just installed block off plates with my akrapovic exhaust and it sounds great. The high rpm LOUD popping is gone. But the low rpm gurgle is still there, which I like. Just letting you know in case you decide to.

Very educative video. Unfortunately I got no room under the seat so I always carry a backpack which sits on the seat. And in my opinion as a mechanic, the tools you carry are not really life saver like for example the gimmick spanner which is just more than a Lego toy. I bough a 16cm long adjustable wrench made in chrome vanadium (Ingco brand) and it was very cheap at $12. A standard 18cm chrome vanadium pliers, same brand and cheap. A 17cm long noose pliers same as above. A multi drive screw driver which is compact and professional, same as above. A 300gr hammer, I cut the handle to 17cm, quality as above. Obviously a repair kit, a cutter, rugs, a chain repair kit and a chain link, spark plug socket, brush etc. etc.

@@TwoWheelObsession BRILLIANT... I LOVE YOUR ANSWER AS I ALSO HAVE 3 BIKES WHICK ARE ALL SO DIFFERENT ; (1) = 2011 Harley CVO road glide ultra. (Great for the long hauls) I have this Harley from new and have put a lot of miles on it with different trips , just to mention a few like; Ukraine, Romania, Black sea, Muldova, Artic Circle up to the Nordkapp Etc....). (2) 2014 FJR1300es which I recently got, WOW this Great bike is really flawlessly and does what it says on the tin.). (3) Suzuki Sv650S.... well just grand for the back roads and keeps me alert. OHHHH. I am almost 64 years young and only 5'3" but I still manage, ok yea I did also drop a couple of bikes when parking or u-turning but my mates or other bikers were always there to help me out. if you worry too much about the bike , then you will spend your youth looking at youtube channels and perhaps never ride the dam bike. P.S. You Do not have to ride fast to be a good biker but dont let your "buddies" or let the pack force you to ride faster than what you are comfortable at. Thanks Tommy from Ireland.

nice video but for god's sake do not carry registration documents on the bike. they should never meet. if, god forbid, your bike gets stolen then the scum bags have your documents as well. Just leave them at home.
@jamescattanach1129

WebbyRides god, sounds like Hitler's Germany, asking for papers. surely that's wrong. OK photo copied documents have potential for fraud but only if used for fraud. I find it difficult to believe that anything bad would happen if you don't carry documents. In the UK you get a producer. which means you have 7 days to take your documents to your nearest police station. seriously though, never keep documents in your bike. it's a bike thief's dream come true, stolen bike and proof of ownership.
